There is really nothing to take away or evaluate from that game last night. It’s a total throw away and move on, at least they didn’t quit when they were down 6-2. Lavy would be wise to,just give them the day off and self evaluate. Bag skating them would be frivolous and counterproductive. IMO

You’re right – if the players have any pride at all in their game or themselves, they’ll right the ship on their own. The horrendous effort they gave last night isn’t going to change by being punished, they have to dig deep in themselves and improve on their own. I think Kimmo will take the lead on pushing the team harder now, with Pronger out indefinitely.
Lifelong Tennessean, Flyers' fan for life
Kimmo really needs to coral the d corps and be the leader that getting an A earns. He looks as lost as the rest of them. And this is not about pronger, he looked like shit before he got hurt.

I agree on that. If they did quit, lots of skating and practice and yelling. But they did stage a very impressive comeback. Sure they didn’t WIN, but they did work back. It was still an awful game in nearly every category, but still, practicing won’t help at this point.

Yeah, we are pretty much saying the same thing. The only this that’s helping is the fact that the ground and road temps are still high enough that it won’t stick to the roads, but if we get 2-3 inches per hour there is no stopping it.
Plus we may get some Thunder snow as well, which is kinda cool.

Indeed. But Illinois strength is their running game and snow on the ground will just force their hand. PSU’s D better come to play.

The D has been spectacular. Top 5 in the nation based on the numbers but it’s looked pretty pedestrian the last two weeks.
For the most part I agree, but McGloin has shown the ability to actually move the offense down the field unlike Bolden.
That said, I have no problem with them running Redd, Dukes and Green all game long.

Hats off to Bryz.....
For a player to stand up in front of the media and speak about himself that way and take responsibility tells me that he really does care about this team. He gave not one excuse, he owned up to his mistakes and promised to fix it. You cannot ask much more from a player than that.
Like he said, bottom line. He’s the goalie, he has to stop the puck. Period.
My teams are the Flyers, Phillies and the Steelers. Deal with it.
Agreed. Now if we could get him to give back a million or two, out of guilt, we would be in business.

Bryz was candid for sure last night. Like you said, it is good that he didn’t make an excuse, he seemed at a loss for words at some times but that’s what you would expect. At the same time, you would hope your “#1” goalie wouldn’t give up 4 goals on 10 shots.

I think the #1 goalie thing is a bit of a myth. There’s volatility in the position, plain and simple.
What kind of plane is it? Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big ol' Tylenol.
And further, is it OK for the backup to let in 4 of 10? Basically, if you are in the NHL you should be expected to have at least a .880. But that’s also over a large sample. Bryz is in a cold streak. He’ll snap out of it. Long term, this isn’t a big deal. The bigger deal, IMO, is regarding the team in front of him. Bryz manned up and took the blame (plenty of which was actually his) but the D in front of him wasn’t a whole lot of help for a bunch of those goals (definitely the game winner).
Please, call me F&B.
Agreed.

With Pronger this is a talented but flawed team that nonetheless has the potential to beat anyone
Without Pronger this is a listless team that has the spine of an octopus
Say what you want about his contract or his declining skills, but Pronger is without a doubt the most valuable player on this team. Its very easy to see how important he is when hes confined to the press box

So now that we're keeping Couturier
Let’s comment on how good he’s been. One of the top Corsis on the team with one of the lowest O-zone start % and combining that with the highest P/60 on the team. He’s still not facing top quality competition but excelling in the jobs he’s been given thus far.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.
One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.
by PursuitOfLappyness on Oct 28, 2011 8:36 AM EDT reply actions
I expect that to drop off quite a bit, but that’s just me (he is right up there with Talbot and Shelley in Corsi, and do you expect Hartnell to come close to ending the year at 3.43 Points per 60 at 5 on 5). Also Harry Z has the highest P/60, followed by Hartnell, Read, and Talbot; then it’s Couturier. And all their rates are completely unsustainable, unless you expect them all to have D. Sedin like seasons this year. My eyes and numbers aren’t meshing well right now, but that’s to be expected in small samples. Those rated stats take a little while to be not be skewed.

Unless you aren’t counting A2/60, which I’m on board with in general, but my main point remains the same.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
I checked beforet he game last night. Prior to then I think it was just Harry Z then Couturier.

On a related note
I commented on this in the game recap thread. Mike Richards is largely being started in the offensive zone in LA…third highest O-zone start out of all forwards on that team. Weird eh

I thought they’d give him those tough minutes and let Anze loose in the O Zone. Is Anze getting the tough starts or are they sending Stoll to the wolves?
Please, call me F&B.
The only players not at 50% are Stoll, Richardson, and Moreau (and Westgarth who isn’t a regular). Penner, Brown, Richards, for whatever reason are getting a ton of ozone (68, 59.4, and 57.6% respectively) starts. Kopitar is at 53.9%. Last year brown and Penner were getting the tougher starts (4th and 6th toughest out of 13 players) on the team as far as Ozone goes. So either it’s a new strategy or we need to give it some more time since the team as a whole is starting more in the Ozone, as they did last year. I can’t imagine having Richards on that line pushes them in to the ozone more.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
Yes, so far they have more draws in the offensive zone than last year as a whole. And they need Richards’ playmaking.
In terms of competition, they have given Richards the toughest matchups by far. But in the early going he sent Stoll, the best faceoff man, out for a lot of draws. Just going over the faceoff charts for the last couple of games Richards and Kopi have gotten more of the crucial ones in the d-zone lately.
In other words, zone start isn’t the whole story.

Is anyone else starting to worry about what’s going to happen when Pronger inevitably declines/retires?
This team is really not very good without him.
Starting? No.
I’ve been worried about the decline/injury/retiring of the elder defensemen — and in particular how Pronger will stay on the cap after that happens — since last spring.
The bad news is that with the team up against the cap and Carle/Coburn both hitting UFA, it looks more likely to get weaker than stronger.

Last spring? For me it started the spring before that, when we looked burned out against Chicago. But I didn’t understand cap implications back then, only that our best guys were getting older.

Yeah, against Chicago I was too anti-Parent to worry about Pronger.
It was around last March or so that it struck me how tight the cap would be when Coburn/Carle hit UFA, and how little they had in the pipeline behind them, and how disastrous it would be if Pronger declined or retired or if Timonen declined.

Well yeah, it started when we completely shit ourselves in the regular season last year when he got hurt.

Conspiracy theory
So who thinks that the defense has been playing like mighty-mites just to prove to Ed Snider that goaltending isn’t the whole answer, and that when Cobie and Carle look for their raises next off-season and can’t get them because of the albatross of Bryzgalov’s contract they can say, “TOLD YOU SO!” and take raises from other teams who will appreciate them?
It’s a stretch – but if I was a defenseman, reading constantly in the McMedia™ about how Bryzgalov was a true #1 and the sole saviour of Flyers hockey, I’d be tempted to say, “Alright – fuck ‘em. Solid defensemen make shit. Point-scoring d-men get paid. I’m heading up ice!!!”
Maxime Talbot - in the Orange and Black ... better than chocolate and peanut butter!
Here’s another one while we’re having fun. Laviolette has been telling everyone that Couturier is his best defensive forward as a way to inform the GM that there are no grown-ups left who can win two key faceoffs in a row. Are we really happy that our best offering for the Selke is a teenager?

Since when is it ok for a Flyers goalie to say he sucks? That’s our job.

Such a better headline than mine.

Hah! I liked the irony in yours. Headlines are the toughest – there’s always a better one and it often comes to mind just as you’ve published.

So, to calm everyone down:
We’ve outchanced our opponents at ES in every game but one. We’ve outshot our opponents in every game but two. Shooting percentage hovers around 11%, which is probably a little high, but save percentage is at 86.74%, which is unsustainably low. Those two numbers should equal 100% when added together.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
You and your advanced stats can get out of here!

A look at the Flyers goals-against so far this year should be able to convince anyone about the luck component of goal scoring.
A look at the players PDO is also telling (small sample sizes!). Couturier, Read, Briere, Talbot and Simmonds are overachieving at ES, but Hartnell, Timonen, Voracek, Jagr, Carle, JVR, Giroux and Shelley are all well below having an average save% or shooting%. I’d be more than happy for the first group to regress if it means the latter group starts making their shots and getting average goaltending.

I realise Snevik gave the team PDO, I thought people might be interested in knowing who we should expect to see improvements from.

OT: If the baseball lead holds, that means that between the Flyers and Phillies for the last three years the teams they’ve lost to in the playoffs have won the championship.
