Hey do you think if a number of people think it is a good idea could we get game threads for the phillies? I know very little then the basics about baseball so it would be cool to chat during the Phils games with familiar people rather then a community that is head and shoulders above myself. Just a suggestion.

I’m not jovial, but the Phils didn’t play all that poorly and lost by 1 run. The Cards BP has been horrible all year. They had a BABIP of over .500 last night. I’m hoping Baseba’al will smile down upon the Phils and not allow this travesty to continue.

Yep. Bottalico on PGL last night was saying Carpenter pitched well but wasn’t getting calls but that Lee didn’t “have his best stuff.” He is so awful. Meanwhile, Coste makes good points and is rational. I want him to unseat RickyBo.

Batting Average with Balls in Play. Weak contact producted some dick dribblers and bloopers last night that found holes. It’s how good pitchers like Lee and Halladay often get killed. Lee left a few pitches up, but he wasn’t bad. His advanced metrics showed he really should have only given up 1-2 runs.

Bottom line: you can pitch well and still lose the game. It’s like a goaltender who stands on his head, but a few lucky bounces off the post and he/team loses 3-0.

My favorite response to BABIP hate from last night:

Line drives obviously are going to fall for hits at a higher rate than fly balls and ground balls are going to do even less damage than fly balls.

There is certainly skill in being able to induce ground balls. The best pitchers K a ton of batters and follow that up with lots of ground ball outs. Lee is capable of that.

When watching last night there were a few times the Cards hit Lee hard. But for the most part it seemed like they kept getting ground balls in the hole or soft looping singles just into the outfield.

I cannot fault a pitcher for inducing a grounder that just happens to hit the hole. That is beyond his skill level to place exactly where a hitter will put the ball in play.

He can make it likely the hitter goes to the left side or the right side of the infield… but is it really the pitcher’s fault that the ball wasn’t a few feet further over where a fielder would have gotten it?

The BABIP question: On the at-bats where you don’t strike out or hit a home run, what was your batting average?

When batters who don’t strike out or hit home runs hit .600 against Cliff Lee, there’s probably a lot of randomly lucky dribblers and bloopers involved.

by Eric T. on Oct 3, 2011 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

So its putting the ball in play but not hitting a home run? It’s batting average not including home runs.

Yes, not counting strikeouts either. Average BABIP is .290-.300. If a pitcher has a higher BABIP, like Cliff Lee did last night, they have been unlucky on balls in play. Usually, that means they were either pitching badly and giving up a ton of line drives (Lee wasn’t doing that) or pitching well and giving up unlucky hits that were just not getting reached by the fielders.

Better to say a player hit a home run, rather than he "walloped"‘ or "‘blasted"‘ or "cracked" it. Home runs are also homers, but avoid calling them "dingers," "‘jacks," "bombs," "taters" and "four-baggers." Pitchers can pitch two-hitters, but avoid "twirling" or "chucking" or "fireballing." And teams try to reach the World Series instead of the "Fall Classic." In short, avoid hackneyed words and phrases.

I’m a big proponent of line drive consideration. I’m not convinced that’s luck-based, but either way, Lee wasn’t giving up many of those last night.

Is there any statistical consideration of how men on base effects BABIP? Would Howard have been further off first on the fourth inning singles if Lee hadn’t walked Berkman?

Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."

by Snevik on Oct 3, 2011 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but when a pitcher’s BABIP is unreasonably high, it means a lot of balls in play turn into safe hits, but were probably hit crappily enough that they should’ve been caught by a fielder for an out.

I was surprised to hear it but someone else will pick him up and he’ll be allowed to resume being a douche in the NHL.

When Coots is gone, does Schenn get called up, or does Shelley/Rinaldo shift into the lineup? If the latter, any problem with riding Read for a while and giving Schenn some AHL seasoning, then flopping them when Read’s college legs give out?

Not sure, but why give a “mid-twenties prospect who has yet to play a regular season game” almost 22 minutes of ice time in the final preseason game. They like what they see or someone else likes what they see.

Commenter formerly known as M from Pdaddy, but still just Call Me "M"!

by MJDII on Oct 3, 2011 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

They want to see him as much as possible to know if he’s actually an NHL player? They like what they see insofar as he could be a viable roster player. This is little incentive for any team in the league to give up assets for that coming up of preseason.

So, you’re right that he’s getting a look, but my argument was based on Read already making the team. And if Read is in a trade, he’s not the centerpiece, and giving 22 preseason minutes to prospect ancillary to the trade purpose is unlikely to increase your bargaining position.

Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."

by Snevik on Oct 3, 2011 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Okay I’m rolling with ya. I am only thinking that if Read is in play for a bigger deal they might have given him more minutes to show what he can do because of his small experience history. Just throwing it out there. I actually think he has handled the minutes he has been given pretty well so far. Not opposed to him getting Shelley’s spot for a couple of games. But after suspension Shelley is on this team and getting his spot for the season.

You can still do that, in certain situations. I’m just not sure if Betts can handle the added time/O zone work that comes with centering Simmonds and Nodl. I think he’s more of a bail out guy than a guy that you have play top competition all night hoping for a draw or better.

In response to Friday’s question, I got JVR in the 17th round (198th overall) in my draft last night. ESPN buried him really low in their rankings (below Schenn and Voracek), and only two people in my league are Flyers fans, so he was under the radar and I was able to wait until late to get him.

I also used a late pick to get Schenn. Couturier went undrafted. So if Couturier makes the roster and Schenn doesn’t, I’ll just swap them. Easy.

I have a history of randomly grabbing some prospect late in the draft who ends up being one of my best players. So I went for Schenn. If it works out, great. If not, he was one of my last picks, so I’m not worried about it being wasted. Anybody I “passed up” to get him is in the FA pool now.

I am a little concerned about my goaltending situation though. I didn’t do my due diligence on scouting, and there are injuries I didn’t know about.

The issue I take with the line of reasoning is the projection of contracts 7 years from now.

For instance, sure it seems like a mistake to start the clock on someone like Tavares, but then the Isles bought out two of his UFA years already, and have him fairly cost controlled at $5.5m. Had they started the clock 1-2 years later, I’m not sure they really save all that much money in the long run. There are a lot of ‘what ifs’ involved, but with an extra year of development, what’s to say he wouldn’t already be a 80 point guy, thus commanding more than $5.5m with his deal.

I get it with a guy who might take longer to develop, but if a kid can be a strong player at a young age, I don’t think having to pay him an extra million or two down the line as creating a significant deterrent.

So then…

1) Team plays him at 18

4) Sign him to long, cheap extension
5) Profit

by Eric T. on Oct 3, 2011 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, that’s also a possibility. Chances are if 1-2-3 happen, then 4 is actually ‘send him back to his junior team and let his ELC slide anyway.’

On your actual 4 though, it’s just really, really hard to predict both what a player will sign for, i.e. will he be like Turris and holdout irrationally, or will he be a guy who takes a ‘hometown discount’ to help build a young team. The general argument about sliding ELCs is “he’ll definitely sign for alot more money later on,” which I think assumes too much.

I used to argue this point as a matter of our backlog of centers. And it was always my reason for trading Carter that Richards was the best third line center since Poulin. And Briere and Giroux were 1 and 2 respectively. But now the the order goes:
Briere
Giroux
???
Betts
I always work from center out when creating lines. Does Talbot need to be the 3rd line center? I believe he played that roll for the Pens????

Cooter and Schenn shouldn’t even sniff this line up this year. Which I was hoping would not have been the case for Schenn.

Oh. Now the draft is tomorrow at 7. I arranged my schedule to be here tonight at 8. I’ll be missing it now. Great.

Make a looong list of players. Make it longer. Longer. Twenty teams and sixteen rounds is a LOT of players.

And then when you pick 17/18/19/20 throw the entire list out because all your players will be drafted in the ~40 selections before you pick twice.

thats what will separate the men from the boys, doin well in this league is not gonna be any fluke. You gotta really know some damn hockey. Personally I can’t wait for this draft, I was disappointed we didn’t get to do it today.

This team will be the death of me.

Just hoping he gets some ice time! He needs to eat some rich Latvian foods and bulk up a bit. He’s really lean for a D-man.

I am just hoping he stays healthy. Seems like he has to deal with some freak injury every year.

Couturier gets 5 games while Shelley is suspended or Schenn is hurt. Schenn should start in the AHL during that time. Then send Couturier back to the Q and only bring him back if Schenn gets hurt again. Couturier should not spend the full year in the NHL under any circumstances.

Let Couturier beat up on kids younger than him for as long as possible so he turns into a stud like Matt Read.

Agreed! I still think JVR would be better if he spent that first year in the AHL. Especially coming from College.

The only thing I disagree with is the college part. Not that college is not a good training ground it still is not hockey as a lifestyle the way juniors and AHL are.

I think keeping him up at all is a mistake. I think he needs another year dominating, and honestly I think Schenn is getting a bad pre-season rap for playing the role he’s going to be asked to play during the season, he’s obviously spend the pre-season trying to play a tough D assignment as much as possible.

People are going to call Schenn a bust all year for not putting up big numbers.

They will call for Couturier even though we are over on Contracts and I would rather see him flex what he can at World Juniors.

Between camp and WJC, if we gave him a 9 game stint, he might not even hit Juniors till January and thats just as bad for development, basically trying to gel with a teams a good 1/3rd of the way into the season. His production and confidence could suffer if he doesn’t gel immediatly.

Not sure about that logic. Didn’t Schenn rip up the WHL after staying with LA and going to World Juniors?

Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

Schenn in the last 3 years in the WHL:

1.25 PPG, 1.68 PPG, 1.77 PPG

Big Jump after his first Kings Camp and WJC, leveled off the next year. Also played for the Kings, World Juniors, and 3 different WHL teams last year, and yeah I think that probably hurt his development arc.

Are you sure? I’ve got his 2010-11 WHL regular season stats as 57 points in 29 games or 1.97 PPG which is a fairly strong jump from 1.68 PPG…

Used a different source, I used his bio on the Flyers site and did the math over his 3 seperate teams based off that. Yours is probably more accurate.

The comment from Holmgren that jumped out at me was the one he made about wanting to keep Couturier with the club for as long as possible because practices and everything are at a different pace and he’ll take those work habits back with him.

It had me wondering if they want to spread his 9 game tryout over the first 1/3 of the season or something so he can practice with the big boys a lot. Maybe they think that’s worth more to his development than dominating 17 year old Canadian kids. Maybe they even worry he’ll pick up bad habits coasting through those games. Maybe (warning: irresponsible speculation coming) that’s something they’ve been concerned with from Schenn so far.

by Eric T. on Oct 3, 2011 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I remember reading the same thing, and that does seem like their plan. I don’t see how they keep him on the roster with that cap hit, as a healthy scratch if Schenn is there too, unless Shelley is waived.

by hebrew hammer on Oct 3, 2011 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Are there any long gaps in the first 1/3 of the season, where he could play 2 games but be on the team for six or seven days? That would let him get in good practice time without burning his slide.

Bob.

by The Dark on Oct 3, 2011 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely and completely 100% agree with this.

While Couturier has overachieved in regards to my expectations this preseason, I firmly believe that Couturier is not ready to play in the NHL. He still has a few things to work on and, as that quote says, he would benefit from another year (as least) in Juniors working on the technicals aspects of his game (i.e. his skating) and focusing on bulking up. He is 18 years old! There is no need to rush him into the NHL and potentially stall his development.
