Buffalo Sabres: Ville Leino and Christian Ehrhoff should provide the Sabres with production at a fraction of the cost of similar players, in the sense that 3/2 is technically a fraction.
Ahh DGB you never fail to amuse.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.
One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

On the topic of rookies
I’ve been fairly impressed by Adam Larsson. Hope he hates playing in Newark and demands a trade out of the division soon.

Philadelphia Flyers: Finally solved their goaltending problem once and for all, in the sense that their problem was that fans weren’t sure which goaltender to blame for destroying their salary cap.
For possibly the first time in Flyers history, I think the Flyers fans actually felt fine with Bobs, it was the coaches and Snider that were up in arms and demanded changes be made.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
The same coaches and GM that burnt Bob out by overplaying him.
Commenter formerly known as M from Pdaddy, but still just Call Me "M"!
Right. But like I said, it wasn’t the fans that were calling for a new goalie. Most fans seemed good with Bob. Even when he struggled a bit down the stretch because those of us who were paying attention knew it was because Bob was tired. Which is natural making the transition that he did.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

though technically, he overplayed himself. He wanted to do it, they let him do it

well they screwed it up that time. I kinda feel like it was the little kid that everyone thinks is cute that wants candy, so they gave in and gave him the candy because the onlookers said they should
Following Dan Carcillo where ever he may go
Giving up isn't an option
I’m not sure what the rationale was for overworking him. The Flyers were going to finish in the top 4, they had a capable backup, so it’s not like there was a huge drop off in talent between Bobs and Boosh. They could have given him a rest and it may have helped.
Now, how the goalie situation was handled in the playoffs is something that honestly, I think Lavy should have been fired for. But whatever, that’s another discussion entirely.
At the end of the day I would have been happy with Bob as the starting goalie and Richie and Carter still here. Or, if they really had to go since it was supposedly not about cap space then I would still have been fine with Bob and the haul that Richie and Carter brought back.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
We could have traded Richie and Carter and still signed a stud 3rd winger like Gagne. That $7M on goaltending is such poor cap management it’s a wonder how they think it’s a good idea.

He’s saying we could have, not that we should have. Gagne at 7 mil is an over payment. Like drafting him 13th overall…but no one would ever do that.

It started well, then meh. I didn’t give people enough credit in what they would pick. I knew Geoff would take players I was sitting on, and planned for it, but didn’t think there would be 2 others doing the same. My last 3 picks were horrendous, but they are all going to be weekly waiver move type of players anyway.

Taking Perry with your 1st pick was bad and gave me a false sense of security, but sure, what was your strategy.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
put all my ranking up by position, making sure I took logical top 6 for each team into consideration.
Then made RW and G a priority.
Took Perry at 4 because the dropoff from Perry/St. Louis/Ignilia seemed way more drastic than any other position (and no way any of those 3 were dropping down to ~40th pick in my opinion.)
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
made drafting easier too, because if I had a position I was shooting for I could just scroll down to that section… if a pick got grabbed from under me, I knew what positions were taking priority. The only thing that really F’d me was when they changed so many wings to LW,RW. it F’d up my wings ranking pretty bad if i wasn’t paying attention.
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
I thought you picked 3rd. But regardless, I kind of figured if you picked him you were picking RW’s.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
your right I did pick at 3…
Yeah, we will see how it works out… Sedin available at 5 was just silly. But I don’t value Ovechkin as high as some. With this league set up it might be a good idea though. LW talent pool is excellent. I was pretty upset when Kane went as high as he did, he was my “I am taking him way higher than I should” pick. Him and Hiller.

I try to find players other people don’t value. You took players I wanted really high. I really didn’t think they would go that quickly, specifically Hiller.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
I don’t trust my ability at valueing backup goalies so I wanted to steal 2 starters before they all dissapeared.
I was afraid I wasn’t the only one that remembered Hiller was having a monster season before he passed out. I def. think he’s probably the most overlooked goalie. Getting Quick too was just butter.

I figured most people would not have Hiller as high up on the radar as he probably should be. And thought he may slip to me the next round. The round he took Myers is the round I had targeted him in, but oh well.
It worked out for some players, others, meh.

being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
Yeah I obviously draft oddly. I have a good feeling about Myers. Would have grabbed Kane too early too if I hadn’t been beat to it. I have way too many Ducks on my team for not following them AT ALL.
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
I had one horrible pick, that I clicked draft on the wrong player (player I wanted was taken shortly after), I corrected it the next round, but I was pretty pissed at myself. I’ll see if you can guess who it was.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
I never got to edit my team last year because Yahoo wouldn’t let me log into it; but the 3 goalies it drafted for me played less than 50 games combined in the NHL last year. It was pretty messed up.

Normally, I read the comments on CSNPhilly to see what other people are saying and generally laugh, but the one had a good point about ELCs and how they can break careers. If Schenn’s cap hit was half of what it is, like Couturier’s, I don’t think there would be any discussion about him being in the AHL to start the season.

Your RW’s are very solid, and you have Hank like Snevik said. Most teams are eh in a 20 team league anyway, so yeah, you have a chance. And head to head helps because you never know what will happen in one week.

But apparently Schenn is the odds-on favorite to win the Calder
Just so everyone is clear:
Schenn was given 3:1 odds against winning the Calder. This made him the favorite, but not the odds-on favorite — “odds-on” means worse than 1:1 odds, and distinguishes the unusual super-favorites from run-of-the-mill favorites. Using “odds-on favorite” the way Puck Daddy — and then Geoff — did renders it tautological.

It is very important in head to head leagues, and in ours they count for 5 out of the 12 categories. In fact, they’re so important in leagues this size that I was quite tempted on drafting 3 starters (more so to f over someone else).

Because the Stars are still paying for some of his salary?

Exactly. 1.9M of his cap hit is carried by the Stars. Does that money stay on the Stars cap if he’s waived and sent to Europe? You might think it would stay on their cap, but I’m not completely sure (I’m working on it). But the Stars have to keep an eye out, because with their current roster via CapGeek, they’ll drop below the floor if Avery comes off. That isn’t the final roster they’ve submitted yet, but it could be interesting.

And imagine what happens if he gets called back up and claimed on re-entry waivers. Does the claiming team get the Stars’ fraction of his salary, or the Rangers’ half, or half of each, or half of the Rangers’ half, or what?

Whether he is correct or not I don’t know, but the ‘half of the Rangers half’ is what Larry Brooks is speculating. Take that with however many grains of salt you want to

My understanding:
If he’s claimed on these waivers, the Stars and the new team are responsible for 1/2 and 1/2.
If he is claimed by re-entry waivers, the Stars are off the hook, and the Rangers and the new team are then responsible for the 1/2 and 1/2.
I have no idea what happens if he goes to Europe.

Awww. I prefer to think on re-entry waivers, the Stars would get half, the Rangers would get 1/4, and the new team would get 1/4. And then he could get waived and re-entry waived again and someone could pay 1/8 of his salary.
Do it a few more times and you’d finally get to a cap hit that I’d be willing to pay.

I think it’d be awesome if every team did it, and someone has to pay 1/536870912th of his salary, or $0.007

“I dunno Ed, do you really think he’s worth it? Let’s see if someone else will give him a second shot this time, maybe we can get him for $0.0035 next time around.”
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
I’m like 80% sure this is what happens.
Here’s my question: does Avery still get full money? E.G. Is his new team paying 1/4 of his original SPC and the Stars are off the hook because the new team and NYR are splitting the 1.9 mil price tag? Or is he getting full SPC amount, of which NYR is paying 1.9mil regardless, and the new team would pay the 1.9mil as well?
In which case, why would anyone claim him on re-entry? If you want Avery, get him on the way down.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
He gets 100% of his Paragraph 1 salary, no matter how it’s divided up between teams actually paying it. S whether it’s paid 1.9 by the stars, 1M by NYR and 1M by team C, or two teams split the 1.9 each, he still gets the money.

So if we’re operating under the assumption NYR is splitting with only one other team, waiving him makes sense, since he’s effectively immune to re-entry.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
I didn’t even think of it that way, but that’s a pretty good point.

We can waive Shelley even if he’s on suspension right? Just if someone claims him he’d have to serve the suspension with him and if not then if we ever wanted to call him back up he’d serve it before being able to play?
Such an albatross of a contract/useless player.
Is the extra 400K really an albatross? You would need to pay a fighter regardless. You paid a little money for an experienced one is all. Paying an unknown quantity in JVR could be the worst contract in the history of the team behind Chris Gratton.

Im guessing Nodl-Talbot-Rinaldo as the 4th line? Not too bad really. Nodl is kinda like a younger Betts, Talbot is like a younger Lappy, and Rinaldo is just a much better Shelley
I love Betts, but I’m not going to say losing him is going to be a key difference in our success this season.
He has been injury prone, for sure. But other people are going to need to step up in the faceoff and PK department. Faceoffs and PK are not good weaknesses to have.
Simmonds has had his PK time decreased dramatically each year, with a grand total of 6:40 played shorthanded in 2010-11. His combined SH ice time for the past 3 seasons is just over half of what Betts played last year alone, so that doesn’t scream PK specialist to me. Sure he’ll be fine if he’s in a supporting role, but I wouldn’t consider him ready to be an anchor of it.

No other forward provided as much value for the dollar defensively as Betts, I think relying on a lot of rookies to run our PK is going to bite us in the ass.

This makes the Powe move even more perplexing. It looked like they were grooming him to be Betts’ replacement.
"I repeat we have normality." She turned her microphone off — then turned it back on, with a slight smile and continued: "Anything you still can’t cope with is therefore your own problem."
Interesting spin on Schenn.
Schenn can only get $1.4 of his bonus if he plays all 82 games. By starting with the Phantoms, he can’t get that bonus. Shouldn’t that change his cap hit from day one, or does it not matter?
I know there’s no bonus cushion this year, but I would have guessed the fact that it was impossible to make that bonus before he even plays with the team would alter his cap hit.
That’s rather silly.
Yeah, I might be wrong here. See the newer thread. I’m just going to let DragonGirl respond to these things from now on.
