They were promised to have size, speed and, for a change, goaltending, and what do you know – they seemed to have all of that last night. But it really wasn’t an overwhelming effort. Bryz’s goaltending and the defensive play of the Flyers covered up a lackluster output of offense. Maybe in time they’ll gel on the offensive side, too, but what I like most about this team is that they look like a TEAM. They look like any one player can contribute on a given night, rather than having to depend on a designated goal scorer or designated penalty killer. Everyone is expected to contribute in all three zones of the ice.

Not looking to shoot you down – I agree in general with what you say about how they performed last night – but I’d say we looked like a team last year as well. And we also looked like a team the season we had 6 20+ goal scorers. We’ve never relied on one or two guys (although the effect of having no Pronger seems to hurt us).

As for everyone contributing in all three zones of the ice – probably should avoid commenting on things like that, Geoff has OZ% numbers ready and waiting.

Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

I'm not Geoff, but...

Let’s not pretend that Briere’s line (which took 7 of its 9 faceoffs in the offensive zone) was asked to play defense — or that they did it very well, either, as they got pinned in their own end a couple of times.

I hope every time Simmonds’ name is mentioned all season, so one points out that he’s black.

That’s not was I referring to at all. Just that he stood out as playing well amongst everyone he was with being nearly invisible all night. He skates better then I thought originally. He got back on a couple plays.

Simmonds definitely can skate. He is a huge improvement over Hartnell on that line. The fact that he likes to hit should be enough to open up the ice for Briere the way Hartnell did by annoying the hell out of everyone.

That being said, I wanted Simmonds on the 3rd line because he is better in his own end and could help cover up for any rookie mistakes. Then again, rookies (and possibly bantams/pee-wee) are probably better on D than Briere is.

Bryz’s goaltending and the defensive play of the Flyers covered up a lackluster output of offense.

Off-season roster moves would indicate that’s the plan. I also agree with PoL below that last year’s group looked very much like a team for most of the season.

Penguins, 6 games
When healthy, the Penguins are just too strong. I mean, where are the weaknesses? Even their arena is state of the art. In a thrilling final series, I feel they’ll wear down the Sharks, who likely will be a little battered from a tough playoff run in the West. I see Marc-Andre Fleury making a big save late to secure the franchise’s fourth Cup.

Oh shut up NHL.com your Penguin love makes me puke

From the wildly disparate predictions this year, I think most analysts don’t know what to expect from the Flyers this year.

Still trying to find out what happened to Hartnell and Briere last night. Did they miss the team bus from the hotel? Figured it would be in the recap.

Biggest Question of the early season: Can an aging Pronger play himself into game shape or will playing too many minutes just beat his body up more on the way to getting in shape?

He may also be pressing Lavvy for minutes. He’s a competitive guy who is used to getting those minutes and the team captain. Maybe they feel he needs to be out there to help the new team gel?

Personally, I agree that he should get fewer minutes and ease back into things.

I’ll say this, I thought he did better than Couturier. I’d like to see him not fumble the puck as much, but he had himself in a few really good positions as well as get out of some tough ones. A couple of puck fumbles and a giveaway or two stuck out to me though.

I disagree. I think Read played hard and with serious energy – but at times was chasing his own tail and fumbled the puck badly. He did have one very nice chance and few nice passes.
Coots was out for some serious minutes, including the final minute of play. He also made some positioning gaffes, and was obviously stunned at the speed of the play at times, but overall was solid in a much more difficult role. AND he’s several years younger, so my expectations on maturity (not potential) are far less.

by mtitanic on Oct 7, 2011 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

MSG and the Rangers have a common owner. MSG won’t sell their games in HD except to Cablevision, which also is owned by the same owner. So I have Fios, but I can’t get MSG HD because they are conspiring to extort viewers into buying (shitty, shitty, shitty) Cablevision so they can get HD. Until just a couple years ago, they wouldn’t even let Fios carry MSG SD, but the FCC stepped in and forced them to give up the SD feed. It’s a classic tying arrangement (to by product A, that you want, you must also buy product B, which blows goats and you don’t want). It’s just being hung up in the FCC by adversarial bullshit, all the while buying time for MSG/Cablevision to continue their collusive behavior, fucking the consumer.

Instead of paying all this money on legal fees and obstructionist lobbying, Cablevision could, you know, just upgrade their services and not suck balls. But they don’t want to, and they know they can’t compete otherwise. If the entire Dolan family and Cablevision C-suite were to be lit on fire, I’d be fine with it.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

I haven’t gone looking for a video, but regarding Marchand’s goal I’m seeing some critical commentary (on another site) towards Kimmo. As I recall Marchand got behind Pronger and got a nice stretch pass. Kimmo got back as fast as he could to try and mop up, but was he out of position to begin with? I don’t think so, but I’m not exactly sure of the PK positioning.
Marchand was also having a great game; I wanted Coburn to freighttrain him all night.

Just for the record I thought KImmo had an excellent game, and has an argument for the best player on the ice last night. /sticktap for Kimmo (I guess I’m just copying Bryz there)

I completely agree. Unless I am wrong on the planned coverage scheme also. Pronger was not sharp on a lot of plays last night. And in his defense that pass through 3 zones was lucky as shit and could have ended up being an odd man rush back into the Bruins zone.

I think it looked like Pronger motioned something to Kimmo. I’m just guessing, but maybe Pronger was letting Kimmo know that he was moving forward for some reason and that Kimmo should stay back. Kimmo stays put, Pronger moves forward and a gap opens for the stretch pass. Definitely a breakdown, but not sure who to blame without knowing what Pronger said.

Not sure about the communication. But it was a little to little to late at that point. I originally thought Pronger anticipated the pass and was looking for the interception.

We’ve had a lot of roster turnover, so maybe it can be salvaged. Have you tried any of the superstitious things some people do to try to reverse the karma, like wearing it inside out for a game? I have the opposite problem, I have a jersey (albeit a crappy one) that served me well in the 2010 playoffs, but hasn’t been good since.

When I played in various leagues years back, I had certian things I would do that worked for me to keep away bad juju. If we won and I played well the jersey would not get washed. I know thats disgusting but you gotta do what you gotta do. I won’t go into other things I didn’t wash I will just stick to jersey’s. If we lost and I had a bad game I would turn the jersey inside out like DG said and wash. If I had a bad game but we one I would just wash. I played on some bad teams so I was pretty stinky for a couple years.

The whole inside out this was recommended to me by someone else. I managed to reset my old black jersey (from the first year they were issued, not the more recent one) after the season that shall not be named by washing it inside out and then wearing it inside out for a game or two. I know some people don’t ever actually wash their jerseys, and that’s a personal thing that I won’t comment one way or the other on, so feel free to skip right to the wearing it inside out part. The wearing it inside out part is the only thing recommended by the friend initially, I just went the extra step because it absolutely needed to be washed by that point.

I’m right there with you and normally wouldn’t wash mine til year’s end (I don’t wear them very often, anyway), but I also include an exemption for if the guy next to you spills a large quantity of beer on your jersey during a game. I thought both Kimmo & Pronger looked rusty as hell to start the game. They got better as time went on, and Kimmo did a complete 180 by the end. Pronger still looked out of sync at the end, but not nearly as bad as at the start of the game.

Couturier, Read & Talbot put a lot of my worries to rest on the PK. Granted, it was only one game, but the kids certainly didn’t look like it was their first game, and Talbot looked more than capable as well.

by EC.Comedy on Oct 7, 2011 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Liked Read and a bit of Talbot. Bostons PP sucked. I’m still worried about our PK. I hope Schenn gets called up and gets some PK legs next game.

They scored a goal and had some sustained pressure. I’m not saying there’s no longer any reason to question the kids, but don’t be such a nattering nabob of negativity. And honestly, from every thing I’ve seen, Couturier is probably better on the PK than Schenn is. Schenn has more offensive upside. Couturier will be the better of the two on D.

Granted, it’s highly unlikely, and Lavy was probably just saying that to give the kid a confidence boost, but what if he actually is?

If his rookie year is to defense what AO’s was to offense, will every one here then admit they were wrong? Not a chance. Small samples work both ways. One game isn’t enough to say the kid is anything more than a rookie in his first game, but it’s also not enough to say he isn’t.

Also, I’m guessing that your comment was just for the sake of the joke (which I liked) I’m speaking to a broad audience, not you.

by EC.Comedy on Oct 7, 2011 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

If his rookie year is to defense what AO’s was to offense, will every one here then admit they were wrong?

I don’t think that’s a fair comparison because offense is so much harder to find than D. You can find stud defensive players for cheap, while still allowing Couturier to develop. Plus, he wasn’t just supposed to be D stud, he was supposed to be a two-way guy that would score a lot. It seems clear he won’t be that guy this year, and I think he may be better served continuing to develop that part of his game at a lower level.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Oct 7, 2011 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

If his rookie year is to defense what AO’s was to offense, will every one here then admit they were wrong?

Wrong about what?

I’d admit that relying on an 18 year old being able to handle top defensive minutes worked out better than I expected, and that it didn’t hurt the team any, and maybe even helped it.

But it wouldn’t prove that the team was right to keep him in the NHL. Like F&B says, you can find defense in a lot of places, and the value of having a contract slide is significant — it’s an extra year of having him cost only $1.3M.

Also, before we start calling him the Ovechkin of defense, let’s keep in mind that while he had a generally sound game in the defensive end, he did have one play where he lost his man and floated until the pass went to his man and his man put a shot off the post. If that shot is an inch to the right, the conversation would be very different today.

by Eric T. on Oct 7, 2011 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

the value of having a contract slide is significant — it’s an extra year of having him cost only $1.3M.

I’ll just point out that there are two sides of this coin. When Couturier is up for his second contract, he’ll have one fewer year of putting up good numbers, so theoretically that should keep him cheaper. If the negotiations don’t reflect that, though, and the Flyers end up paying top dollar on that second contract anyway, then you’re back to the position Eric just stated.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Eric T. on Oct 7, 2011 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Heh. Maybe his K could have been even higher!

That has been something I’ve been meaning to look at, whether those second Ks do come down. The guys that come to mind are studs (Doughty, Stamkos) so I don’t think they’re the best example. Hadn’t thought about JVR.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Oct 7, 2011 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Like they did with JVR? I think they will look at him the same way in 3 years, unless we get a change in the FO.

by hebrew hammer on Oct 7, 2011 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think it was the same play, but there was a moment or two on the PK where I was yelling at the TV for him to get higher up to the point, he dropped too low in the zone, but wasn’t serving any purpose there. Seemed like he was drifting towards the puck for no good reason.

by hebrew hammer on Oct 7, 2011 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Nope, not the same. I really only focused on him at even strength, because I think (emphasis on think — I haven’t researched it yet) it’s a lot more common for kidsters to be fine on the PK.

by Eric T. on Oct 7, 2011 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I was pretty surprised to see him on the 1st PK unit, so then I was just looking for something to criticize.

by hebrew hammer on Oct 7, 2011 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Also he does hve offensive talent and I would like to see him develop that as well, so the idea of him staying but as a third line checker is not ideal. Sure he looked good but he is 18 and this is the NHL so I say they send him back after his 9 games and dominate the Q..

Giroux & Schenn (once Briere’s contract is up) are your 1 & 2 centers for the next decade or so (in theory) I’m pretty sure his role on this team is 3rd line checker even if he spent another few years in the Q.

Yes, he is supposed to be a two-way player, but Schenn has more O upside and Couturier has more D upside. Unless you want them to shift him to the wing, which I definitely don’t want to see happen, he’s your 3rd line guy of the future.

Nice start

I for some reason watched the pre-game hooplah. Maybe to further enhance my distain of the Bruins. For whatever reason, I thought it was a good event. Nice to see Recchi get his last moment in the spotlight. For the game, I almost had a freak attack watching the first ten minutes with the glaring mistakes and how old our defense looked. Slowly, with the aide of a few Mooseheads, I calmed down, as did the play of the team, and they made a game of it. It was nice to actually watch a one goal game, that didn’t turn into a loss, or overtime over crappy goaltending. That actually has me somewhat relieved. Yeah yeah yeah, its one game. But u can see the potential of a solid hardnosed team fighting for each other and putting up a united front. Not to say that past rosters haven’t, but I think we have a team, all on the Lavi’s bandwagon. That VJG line is going to be stupid scary. Our rookies didn’t hurt us and they played important minutes. And best of all, not once did I think to myself, wish we had so in so back. This team is only going to get better, and we hung tough with the defending champs in their own building on their pat themselves on the back night. Good friggin times. Now 81 more, and then we’ll see how all these changes pan out. Nice job boys.

Rinaldo is typical of the breed. he skates his ass off, throws some good checks and works hard. Then something misfires in his brain for a second and stupidity sets in. It’s the same for all these guys.

Maybe so, but the rest of his line was driving play forward without him, he took a stupid early penalty, and he didn’t even drop the gloves with anyone. (In a game where our star player got boarded pretty hard.)

If this is his real game situation audition, I am not giving him a passing grade.

My verdict is waiting on the whole Walker issue, as well as the Hartnell rumors. If Walker and Betts were waiver bait to open a contract its either 1) a trade with Nashville 2) keeping Couturier up all year or 3) no fucking idea I am not a hockey insider.

I think theres at least a 50% chance we dumped a contract on a waiver pickup to keep Couturier all year.

I thought the major argument against JVR was the NCAA is the CHL and making the jump was too difficult. Couturier played in the CHL 18 year old players can be impactful with limited ice time and he is not AHL eligible he has to go back to QMJHL which might be a bigger step back.

There’s two different argument: (a) whether they are good to sustain high-level play, and (b) whether they will have their legs. JVR arguably had the former, but not the latter. Read probably has the former, but not the latter. Couturier would most likely have the latter, but I don’t know if we can judge the former off one game.

Chara hit?

Anyone else think the Chara hit on G deserves a look at from Shanhan? I was watching the game on a poor link in class (with ads popping up) so I didn’t get that great of a look… But from what I did see, looked awfully close to some of those 2 gamers from last year with a player attacking to a corner, and receives a defenseless check to the back.
Could be completely off, haven’t been able to watch the dvr version yet.

Nah, he backed up into him to get space on the puck and Chara is just to big for him to do that to. He needs to use his speed there and swoop the puck off the boards and if Chara wants to trip or hold him then he gets the penalty.

all my Boston friends think Shannahan will come down on Chara for the boarding because of the shove after initial contact. I think it will be reviewed but no suspension.

by 02h32m01s on Oct 7, 2011 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions

It will definitely be reviewed, but I’m not so sure on the suspension. That secondary contact might have been incidental. And with all of Chara’s mass moving at that speed I think a simple collision would have had the same effect.

"I repeat we have normality." She turned her microphone off — then turned it back on, with a slight smile and continued: "Anything you still can’t cope with is therefore your own problem."

The initial contact was fine, but Chara gave an extra shove with his hand in the middle of Giroux’s back that, to me anyway, seemed to be what put Giroux head-first into the boards. The boarding call was definitely correct. I’m not sure about suspension though, I guess we’ll see.

I think the boarding call was right, but I don’t think a suspension should happen because of G’s move to backwards check Chara.

Still, if there’s a video review it would be hilarious if at the end there was a close up of Shanny saying, “No suspension is warranted, but don’t do it again Chara.”

Often wrong, but never in doubt.

And frankly, both Read and Courturier did better than I expected. Once Rinaldo got his whopping 6:27 of ice time, and his night was over, the fourth line did rather well cycling people around on that wing for the other 4+ minutes they got at even-strength without BatShit.

Absolutely agreed. I mean, if someone was to argue that (in essence) Shelley was better than Betts they’d be roundly shouted down.

And, frankly, I agree that Talbot is a fair-to-middling third line winger, a moderate fourth-line center, and an above-average fourth line winger. My narrative isn’t ‘false’ as much as pointing out the extremism in your previous commentary, where you insisted he was pretty much worthless. Repeatedly.

BUT – that is all in the past. Our personal impressions from it are different; so be it. We can agree that Talbot is best suited on the fourth line (especially on the Flyers … he could easily be third line on some teams), and that we’d rather see him as a winger where his particular brand of agitation is helpful and not hurtful. But given (as Eric notes) that their Corsi is off the charts so far – even with Batshit on one wing – I think we may all start liking Talbot a bit more around here.

Maxime Talbot - in the Orange and Black ... better than chocolate and peanut butter!

Their Corsi was great in the first game. In the second, they got outshot 5-3, in a game where the rest of the team outshot the Devils 28-16. Just for the record.

Anyway, I agree that he’s adequate as a third line winger or fourth line center and good as a fourth line winger. I think his contract is too pricey and too long (risky) for that level of skill, but thinking he won’t provide good value doesn’t mean he’s valueless.

I show up before anybody else got there, had a nice cold brew, and then the gf walks in with 2 of her girlfriends. Previously mentioned guy friend fails to show up until about the 2nd period and by that point, I was in what I could only think would be hockey’s purgatory but leaning mostly towards hell.

Well first don’t ever say lady friend. That is reserved for single women over 60 like what my single dad has. And it started harmless enough so although you take a punch in the man card for poor planning you did get to watch the game and if they are all hot well it can be considered a push. The guy friend takes takes a double tap to the card for leaving you hanging. Bros before Hos and all. But lastly we need to come away from the term guy friend. it’s some other dude or my boy. There is no in between.

Call it a push because they are all not terrible to look at. They aren’t in my usual group of friends that I watch with but those people were unable to watch. So this is in no way going to be the norm.

Well you definitely earned some points I am sure, which could pay dividends down the road. But the tone must be set that this is the exception on hockey nights not the norm. I can’t tell you enough how the establishment of the rules is imperative. I know this because I didn’t set firm enough rules myself and it has become a life long battle. And now I have way to much to lose.

by mtitanic on Oct 7, 2011 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Would you feel the same if it wasn’t Lindros in the centerpiece? I know Flyers fans think that his is abominable, and I think that’s funny because you’d almost certainly have that hit in Flyers’ lore if it was the other way around. That’s a hit I think should be in the game. I’m not going to say Cherry is always right, but I do think Lindros should be fair game right there, and I don’t think it’s an accurate comparison to what happened to Savard. If Lindros is looking where he’s going, at all, then he doesn’t take that shot. Savard was blindsided and had no real idea that he was in that danger. Do you really want a game where players can stare at their feet through the neutral zone? To me part of the entertainment in the game is that these guys have the skill to do what they do without looking down, under the threat of a huge hit like that. Removing that threat and adding an element of men’s league hockey is less skillful, and less entertaining.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Oct 7, 2011 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I actually thought the Lindros hit was awesome when it happened. Despite the fact that it was Lindros, obviously.

Today, I’d only find it acceptable if Stevens didn’t make contact with the head. That’s the scary part we need to get out of the game, in my opinion.

Broad Street Hockey - Covering the Philadelphia Flyers. Have you accepted Ilya Bryzgalov as your savior?

by Travis Hughes on Oct 7, 2011 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s fair. I just think that Lindros was carrying his head in a way that made it real hard for there to be no contact with the head. He was hunched over looking down, so his chin was basically on his sternum, which is the target for ideal point of contact. I’m not sure an absolute ban on head-contact is the way to go, and if there is an allowance for incidental head-contact, I’d think the Lindros hit would be within that carve out.

I thought there were other hits in that highlight reel that did bother me, though.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Oct 7, 2011 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

We were always taught to keep our head up while we were playing. When you watched your shot/pass instead of where you’re going, you got your head taken off. People are crying about these guys having life threatening injuries, but that’s what we pay them millions of dollars for. When you do a job that has high risk of injury or death, you get hazard pay. That hazard pay is nothing compared to what these players make. If they don’t want to take that risk, they are welcome to dig ditches. Option number two is to just keep your head up & be aware of your surroundings.

Since the lock out, every year I have enjoyed hockey a little less. It’s to the point where I barely even watch any more. They are killing the game. Get rid of the instigator rule so guys who play dirty can get reminders not to do so, and all will be fine.

You are absolutely right in your response to Cherry’s rant. The gladiator analogy was spot on.

Hockey will be a much better place once Don Cherry is no longer one of it’s representatives. He is a disgrace.

I don’t want to generalize here, but Don Cherry is old. And for the most part, old men set in their opinions and their ways are averse to any change, even when that change is clearly in favor of the greater good.

Careful there, Travis. :)
But yes, Cherry certainly is a dinosaur who is no doubt nostalgic about these things. Probably prefers goalies without masks, too. Just because these hits were for the most part “permissible” then doesn’t mean they should be. There’s no room for this, not in any era. When Cherry and those of his ilk are declared extinct I shall not mourn.

This is the second instance I’ve seen since I ran a survey that didn’t see any impact of age on hockey views that someone suggested an impact of age on hockey views.

Not to say there isn’t one (my survey was pretty primitive), but it’s interesting that it keeps coming up lately.

Wouldn’t using an online survey tend to self-select older people that are more mentally flexible, since they’re the ones a) using the Internet and b) going to sites where they find surveys from bloggers? Those aren’t exactly attributes one would associate with the “get off my lawn” older folks.

Apparently Vokoun told this to the media that he’s not starting, and this caused Boudreau to get pissed since roster decisions are kept close to the vest.

The Vokoun decision is pretty strange. He’s been touted by Caps management as the missing piece to the puzzle, is healthy as far as everyone knows, and even had his entire family fly in for the opening game, and now he’s not playing.

Can somebody tell me why Charas showing of Giroux into the boards wasnt a boarding penalty? I understand that players have to be aware of there surronding and not put them self into dangerous position, but I still didnt thought that showing a player into the boards was legal. Chara could easily ride him hard into the boards instead.

by Anders Jensen on Oct 7, 2011 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

I thought it was called as a boarding penalty, but looking back at the box score, you’re right, it wasn’t. Weird. That’s what I get for watching at a bar with no sound.
