Wednesday Morning Fly By: Finally Some Actual Hockey to Talk About

Today's open discussion thread, complete with your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes...

  • Jim Jackson is back with his five thoughts, talking about Giroux, Pronger, and Bryzgalov. Just to counter his point about the Flyers playing well without Pronger, Eric's Corsi graph: [CSNPhilly]
  • A translated interview with Jaromir Jagr on how he doesn't care about points: [Flyers Faithful]
  • Wondering when Jakub Voracek is going to breakout: [Orange and Black Pack]
  • Niko Hovinen stopped 24 of 25 shots in a 4-1 win: [euroflyers]

  • After ten games, do we really know anything about NHL teams? [Backhand Shelf]
  • Looking at previous realignments to see if we can learn anything: [SBNation.com]
  • Courtesy of Ben, the video for the official song of the 2011 IIHF World Championships: 1) was by a former Slovak Eurovision entrant; 2) features clips of the Latvian team and the word "wolves"; 3) was filmed in Andrej Meszaros' home town and includes a clearly visible Flyers logo around the 2:35 mark: [YouTube]
  • Point/counterpoint on Brendan Shanahan and the new rule of law in the NHL: [Flyers Faithful]
  • The beginning of an app where you can search any player or team's shots and goals by location from the last 3 seasons: [Pension Plan Puppets]

I particularly enjoyed the reactions of the suited spectators to whatever it was they saw. Plus the girl is cute and at least appears to be into hockey. I’m imagining her in a similar, Flyers-themed outfit performing this at the WC.

Geez no!

She is not into hockey, but she would be into anything which would net her some publicity. She might be cute, but she CAN NOT sing, trust me. As far as video goes, it is decent when it comes to local standards. This was accepted with HUGE disappointment here in Slovakia, that we hadn´t been able to deliver something of a higher standard.

But if you like her, you might like this:

So err

If Lindros plays really well in the alumni game, could we sign him as our fourth line center? He’s only 38…

In fact forget fourth line center, imagine Jagr-Lindros-Giroux.

Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

We could also hire Lindros as a specialist ‘power forward coach’ whose job is to hang around JVR all day and teach him how to become an elite power forward.

Lindros could start by getting JVR to gain another 20 lbs. We forget just how big Lindros is, 245lbs at 6ft 4in. He is 5 inches shorter than Chara but only 10lbs lighter in playing weight. 15lbs heavier than Ovie. Nobody in todays game could come close to stopping him.

I still have a ton of games from the early to mid 90’s on VHS from when he was exerting his will over the rest of the league. One of my most favorites was when he scored on a breakaway vs NJ after stealing the puck and Gary Thorne yelled out “take the roof off baby!” The Spectrum went bananas. I need to get those over to DVD at some point so I can preserve them. I like to watch those old games from time to time.

Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

Not sure if your serious about JVR gaining 20 lbs.

To gain 24-26 lbs of skeletal muscle one needs about a year of uninterrupted weight training. Or 10 months in the case of 20 lbs. To play of an 82 game season of hockey, weight train to gain muscle mass and counter for the losses from the cardio component of the sport requires the creative chemistry of some unregulated Romanian tin shack lab on the outskirts of Bucharest that the Russian mafia runs. Even in the off season, given the cardio preparatory demands of hockey, a weight training program dedicated to building muscle mass might yield some small gains but at the possible expense of developing sports specific power thru a strength training program tailored for hockey players. Futhermore, doubling one’s efforts to offset these losses, as many athletes are prone to do, is overtraining and this only invites risk of overuse and fatigue related injuries, unnecessary wear, deterioration of skills and the loss of the very gains sought out in the first place . It’s easy to put on weight but that doesn’t translate into skeletal muscle mass which is what does the work. You see this with fighters who make a sudden leaps to the next weight class. If the bulk isn’t converted into functional strength, either it ’s just extra weight to carry around and drag them down, or the training to make and maintain the gains compromised their endurance work significantly enough to effect their stamina.

by j reed on Nov 2, 2011 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought JVR said he gained some weight/muscle in the past offseason?

Sure – 20 lbs may be asking a bit much, but I went from my boxing weight of 165 lbs to my rugby weight of 220 lbs (and both very fit) in only two years. NO chemicals involved either. Some people can, and some people can’t – if your frame is meant to be muscular you will be, and if your frame is meant to be skinny you likely will be also.

Did you work in an 82 game NHL season in those 2 years?

by Phalange on Nov 2, 2011 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

No – I played 2 10-game rugby seasons per year. Which honestly include quite a bit of physical exertion (two 40 minute halves per game, with very little stoppages, sometimes a few games a day). And it wasn’t my full-time job either.

From a fellow skinny person hintzy:

4,000 calorie a day diet.
1 – 2 hours weight training a day (variation groups per day to avoid overuse) w/ Sundays off.
consistent for almost 2 years.
starting weight 144, ending weight 183.
after a few big jumps in the beginning the avg. gain per week was .5 lb to 1 lb a week.

(and for sake of narrative I’ve lost almost all of it over the last couple years due to reduction in diet and sitting around on my butt)

My initial response was, "I hate you so much right now" but I changed it.

Oh, don’t get me started. I absolutely love it. I’ve recently started looking into outdoor climbing too, since there are apparently some good areas for it near me. It’s challenging both mentally and physically, and I find it very satisfying. Hope you enjoy it!

What’s hilarious is that my wife and I spent a long weekend down on the Blue Ridge Parkway doing some hiking a couple weeks ago. We found that anytime we came to a rock face or some boulders we’d start running our hands over them looking for holds. We’ll never look at a rock the same way again.

Those gains I got working mostly body weight. I was working out at home and quickly got past what weight I had in the house.

One advantage of using your own body’s weight is its free. The other is as you get heavier you also are lifting higher amounts of weight. :)

Just make sure he doesn’t teach JVR how to skate with his head down, but yeah. It sure would be a lot of fun to see another player like #88 in the NHL today. I used to love when he opted to just destroy guys, then skate away from the faceoff dot with the puck rather than actually try to win the faceoff clean. (which he was more than capable of doing)

by EC.Comedy on Nov 2, 2011 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Funny thing, on all the NHL games I own where Lindros was still an active player I would always sign/trade for him and keept him around as a 3rd or 4th line center on the Flyers until he would retire.

I keep reading a lot of things about the residents not being very happy about it being there. Makes me wonder if they should even bother. I still don’t understand why they wanted to move the Phantoms out of Philly. There are other locations besides the spectrum that are much closer than Allentown. Something at the Navy Yard, or along Columbus Blvd on the river (where it bends around to Pattison Ave) would have been nice, and could have been something to really jump start a new section of the city. Most of theat area is empty. Putting in an arena for the Phantoms would have kept them local where they would get much more fan support, and the space between there and the other stadiums could have been developed with hotels, sports bars, and maybe even casinos along the river.

This city is getting more & more run down and shitty every year. They really need to do something to make it worth coming to for tourists/transients/people relocating.

by EC.Comedy on Nov 2, 2011 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Most of theat area is empty.

Only on the surface. There’s a whole helluva lot of underground infrastructure there, between gasoline pumping lines and sewer interceptors and rail switching power lines and controllers. And who wants to watch hockey next door to a sewage treatment plant anyway???

I would suggest a smaller rink up at the City-owned lots above Spring Garden before down at the bottom of Columbus. Better traffic patterns there too.

if the cost is $100 Mil in Allentown, it would probably be twice that in Philly.

I’d love to see them comd home though. I thought they should go with a smaller stadium somewhere more central to Philly, that could also be a modern concert venue. It could go somewhere like the Cirque de Soleil lot at Broad and Washington or maybe the Disneyhole at 8th and MArket

Flyers, Phillies, Union, Eagles, Phantoms, Wings.

by Pelti on Nov 2, 2011 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

If the cost is $100 million in Allentown, it’d probably be several BILLION in Philly. :)

But seriously, the lot at Broad and Washington is a little too residential to support a stadium/concert venue (at least in the currently reigning paradigm in Philly). 8th and Market doesn’t have adequate traffic access (El and buses, but the trip up 7th to the Vine Expwy is already a bitch).

You need to look for larger parcels, with decent access to highways and transit, and preferably some buffer between it and residential neighborhoods. So areas like Upper Brewerytown/Strawberry Mansion, Fishtown or Port Richmond (especially along the river), or even the old TastyKake site at 34th and Grays Ferry (ideal – on the river, good transportation, isolated but not too far from neighborhood, good transit options, etc).

Obviously, I have given this some thought.

My wife gets full credit for that. She bought a Magnavox DVR for me several years ago and I love it. It’s basically a glorified VCR that records to a hard drive or DVD-R instead of tape, so it doesn’t know the TV schedule and record automatically or anything like that, I have to set it myself. But I don’t mind that at all. And I don’t have to pay extra monthly fees for the fancy DVR-capable set-top box or another service like TiVO. So for me, it’s absolutely perfect.

That sounds amazing and exactly what I need since I don’t want to pay more for DVR but still be able to watch the games after the fact. It is weird to me though to watch a game knowing that it’s not live… but I guess you get used to that.

Yeah, after a few minutes of action, I get just as into the game as if it were live. Excited over goals, nervous when holding a small lead, the whole deal. And I can skip the commercials!

This is basically what I have:http://www.magnavox.com/p/index_player.php?id=58
Mine is just several years old, so it only has an 80GB HDD. Still plenty of space. Looks like they sell 320GB and 500GB versions now.

I should mention the one catch is that, unless you’re recording from an unencrypted channel (ABC, NBC, CBS or FOX), it needs to be connected to the output of your set-top box, and the box has to be on the channel you want.

I put a splitter on the coax cable coming from my wall, one end goes to the STB, the other to the DVR. If I want to record from an unencrypted channel, I do it directly through the DVR. For anything else (VS, CSN, ESPN, etc), I go through the STB. And then the outputs of both the STB and DVR go to my TV.

That’s interesting that the “broadcast” channels are different. So you can’t record something on ABC and be watching ESPN without messing up the recording. Do you have production background or just knowledge of TVs and wires?

www.southpawcurve.blogspot.com - check out my baseball blog!!

by JLS89 on Nov 2, 2011 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually, the example you gave works. I can watch ESPN (via the STB) while recording ABC (directly from the coax jack), or vice versa. But I can’t watch ESPN while recording VS, they’re both encrypted and require the STB. The major networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CW, PBS) are unencrypted because they are also broadcast for free over the air. You don’t need cable to get them, you could use an antenna if you wanted. So it would be stupid for the cable company to encrypt them.

As for me, I’m just an engineer that likes playing with computers and electronics. :-p

Comcast DVR is pretty nice many times I had to work later than I though and was able to log into via a website or app on my iPhone and set it to record Flyers games or whatever I was going to miss.

It is also fun to use the same app to change the channel while I work to freak your wife out. She was trying to watch some crap on Oprah’s Network and from work I kept changing the channel to The Terminator. I wish I could have been on the line while she was trying to explain this the Comcast Customer Service.

In completely OT but still hilarious news...

Background: Tabloids are debating this girl’s claim that Justin Bieber (ew) is the father of her baby…

That’s not the funny part though. When I clicked a news link off of Google to see what the heck was going on, this is how the article had Bieber’s rep’s statement:

“While we haven’t yet seen THE LAWSUIT, it’s sad that someone would fabricate, malicious, defamatory AND demonstrably false claims. We WILL VIGOROUSLY PURSUE all available legal remedies to DEFEND AND protect Justin against THESE ALLEGATIONS.”

It looks like FLYERROB wrote it. I cracked up.
