Monday Morning Fly By: With Five Days Off, Prepare For the Narrative
Today's open discussion thread, complete with your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers-related news and notes...
- Danny Briere and Andreas Nodl collided on Saturday, knocking Nodl out of the game: [CSNPhilly]
- Jon Kalinski had himself quite the Saturday night as the Phantoms won 4-3: [PostStar.com]
- Jakub Kovar stopped 36 of 38 shots in a 3-2 win yesterday: [euroflyers]
- More links to sortable shot quality data: [Arctic Ice Hockey]
- And because there's so little today, this from Ben: Swedish Eurovision juggernaut Eric Saade of Melodifestivalen 2010 (3rd place) [YouTube] and ESC 2011 (3rd place) [YouTube] fame's new single Hotter Than Fire includes intriguing adjectival use of the word "Flyer." Not only is the girl of whom Saade sings "hotter than fire," she is also "cooler than ice" (expected) and, most interestingly, "flyer than wind." I have no idea what this means, but I wholeheartedly approve. The song features Dev, of "Like A G6" acclaim. Don't hold your breath for a Garrett Klotz Argument Cover. [YouTube]
- That's it. Sorry there isn't more to bring you back from holiday. Go buy a shirt.

I forgot Danny Briere was on the team until Nodl tried to knock him out. So I guess that was one positive….I guess.

Inevitable. There was only going to be one winner in a him-or-him choice to turn around their slumping (As a team, and their star players as individuals). You can’t trade away a player with that much ability (to play hockey, and to sell tickets). But what they really need now is an actual captain to get the players in line with whatever the new coach wants to preach. Ovechkin is no sort of leader.
Posting all the way from sunny Manchester, England.
Unless you are the Flyers and you send your Captain packing.
I agree with you though, Ovie was never going to get traded but he is a piss poor Captain.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
Well, yeah. I miss Richards ….but Ovechkin is a superstar. Or, would be, if he pulled his finger out. It will be interesting to see what happens if things dont change. I guess Semin will be shipped.
Posting all the way from sunny Manchester, England.
Yeah I am not trying to make the point that Richie and Ovie are the same player or on the same level, they aren’t. While I think Richie is the better hockey player, Ovie is clearly the bigger offensive threat. That team seems to have guys on the roster that would make a better Captain than the one they currently have but for some reason I don’t see them taking that angle.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
Richards isn’t on the Flyers anymore, I think it’s okay to admit Ovechkin is a better hockey player.
This has nothing to do with Richards being a Flyer. It has to do with reality. You seem to be ignoring that.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
The reality is that Ovechkin’s worst season still tops Richards’ best. I know there is more to hockey than scoring goals, but he scores an overwhelming amount more.
I know there is more to hockey than scoring goals,
And it’s because of that, that I can believe Richards is a better hockey player.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
I think there are more 2-way centers than perennial 100 point scorers, although who knows where Ovechkin progresses from here.
I’d say Ovechkin definitely was better until 2010, but given the last 1.25 seasons, well, time will tell whether Ovechkin is merely slumping or actually taken a huge step back.

I read yesterday that Calgary might trade Iginla to give him a shot at the Cup before he finishes, like Ray Bourque. If I were Capitals GM, and something could be worked out there, I’d pack Semin’s bags tomorrow.

So which team hires Boudreau first? Columbus? Carolina? I wonder how long Boudreau’s current contract keeps him from accepting another coaching job?

If they give him permission? They have to do that with someone they fired? They ended the relationship so at that point I don’t think they have any right to dictate where he goes or what he does. Unless there is something specific in his contract. It’s not like he resigned or asked to be let go.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
No, but he’s still under contract, receiving a paycheck, just relieved of his duties, right? Blues had to get CBJ’s permission to talk to Hitchcock, for example.

Can’t speak about the show specifically, but I agree with your general sentiment. One of the more annoying things about getting older is the temptation to dismiss anything from the last dozen years as an example of cultural dissolution. What’s even more annoying are all my peers who have no problem doing so and can’t see any other way to look at the world.

by flyersfaninchicago on Nov 28, 2011 12:59 PM EST up reply actions
I think it’s true of every generation. A fatal flaw in getting older is the tendency to forget and dismiss childhood and teenage years. I become annoyed at teenage antics, but I realize we were all the same at that age, too. We just had different time-wasters at our fingertips.
"I wouldn’t run if there was a fire. I wouldn’t run anywhere. I hate running." - O. Munn
Actually I was an old and crotchety bastard even when I was a kid – growing up we only watched PBS in our house. So I would agree … except for the fact that I disagree.
I am glad that your son defies the odds. It speaks more to the attention and education he must get from his parents – because he sure isn’t getting it from that crapola.

Television isn’t meant to educate anyone. It’s entertainment media, even gasp PBS. I watched TV for 10 hours a day growing up, never got any sort of education from my parents and graduated at the top of my class in HS and college. It’s all innate in kid’s makeup, I think.
"I wouldn’t run if there was a fire. I wouldn’t run anywhere. I hate running." - O. Munn
Nature over nurture? The libs won’t like that – it smacks of genetic predisposition to intelligence (although somehow the same argument works in their favor in terms of homosexuality … I hate illogical people.)
Congrats to you, BTW. But I believe (and raise my kids this way) that TV can be educational and not just mindless entertainment. So can most other experiences. So when you visit DisneyWorld, also visit SeaWorld, the Gatorland Zoo, Cypress Gardens, and the Everglade NAtional Park – not just MIckey and Minney.

by MaximumTalbot on Nov 28, 2011 5:09 PM EST up reply actions
I think both nature and nuture are important, but for those without it, simply saying “my parents didn’t love me enough,” is not enough of a reason to be a fuck up IMO. However, I am more liberal-minded, so don’t believe everything you see on TV about us.
TV can be educational, but it’s mostly not. That’s why you watch with your parents, so they can answer questions you may have on content. I also don’t believe in shielding my son from reality any moreso than necessary, i.e. nipples at halftime are NBFD. The Superbowl is not “family” time. These men are trying to kill each other for chrissakes.
"I wouldn’t run if there was a fire. I wouldn’t run anywhere. I hate running." - O. Munn
I agree in general. I don’t believe in shielding kids from reality either – but I don’t think TV generally portrays reality, but some does. The stuff that does is fine viewing for a youngling, and the stuff that bears little resemblence to reality (oddly usually marketed as a ‘reality show’) shouldn’t be in a kid’s viewing entourage.
I know I’m kinda extreme. I learned a lot from watching Masterpiece Theatre and Nature and Nova. I don’t see any value in ‘Sponge Bob’ – certainly less value than the child could gain from playing or reading. Heck, at least reading drivel gets them used to reading, rather than staring open-mouthed at the TV.
Curmudgeon = me.

Well, if you break any dance down to it’s basic elements, it’s just movement and exercise. It’s like drawing. They Met a Guy Named Stanley (Stanley!)
Hammerman! Hammer!
Hammerman! Hammer!
Whenever there’s a crime
Some crooks are gonna do time
They all better beware
Cause the Hammerman will be there!
Here’s how it started
A long time ago
The legend of the Hammer
And how it began to grow
He was given magical shoes
From a hip-hop motown dude
Together they had power
They stood up for what was right
But Gramps was gettin’ old and
He couldnt keep up the fight (right)
So Gramps and his granddaughter
They went out on the road (searchin’)
To find a man they knew who could jam
Who was worthy of the load
They met a guy named Stanley (Stanley)
Who was dancin’ every night
He helped the kids play every day
His heart was out of sight
So Gramps opened up the bag
And took out the magical shoes
He set them on the ground
And they soon began to groove
The shoes knew at once
They had finally found their man
They hopped right on his feet
And he became Hammerman!
Hammerman! Hammer!
Hammerman! Hammer!
Hammerman! Hammer!
Hammerman! Hammer!
Oh Yeah!

Like, if I wanted to read Flyers-related tweets, I’d search for “#Flyers” and all the tweets with that hashtag in them would come up. People often end their tweets with a list of any relevant hashtags so others can find them easier. Also, if a lot of people are tweeting using the same hashtag, that topic becomes a “trending” topic. I haven’t checked, but I wonder if #Caps is currently trending in DC, because of the Boudreau firing.
I guess it’s the list of hashtags at the end of tweets that led it to become a way to deliver the punchline of a joke. Some hashtags, like #HartnellDown, have become jokes in themselves.

True – but generally they do smell alike. I don’t like the French. (French Canadians have some redeeming qualities their European brethren do not share, like a work ethic.)

At the risk of being a joke killer, the French have a higher GDP per man-hour worked than the United States – they work fewer hours, but they’re more efficient than Americans.
Bob.
Do you have a link to a list of these type of stats? I’d be really interested to look at how countries rank.

This link shows the U.S. ranked 4th and France 6th. Still, it refutes the idea that the French don’t work. But hey, it’s a casual cheap shot so why not take it?

I wonder how much of this is based on the US controlling more wealth than other countries. I’ve never really studied economics, but I would think that could play a role as well.
by hebrew hammer on Nov 28, 2011 1:34 PM EST up reply actions
None. GDP is private consumption plus private domestic investment plus government expenditures plus exports minus imports. Accumulated wealth has zero effect on GDP.
Bob.
Yea, I’m figuring that out now as I read about purchasing power parity, which the 2009 list is based on. Seems as though they find a way to adjust the value produced.
It would just seem that a country with more accumulated wealth would have an easier time making private investments and government expenditures, though I have nothing to base that on.
by hebrew hammer on Nov 28, 2011 1:42 PM EST up reply actions
PPP works by adjusting based on the cost of goods. To give a really simplified version, say the US produces USD100 worth of Product X, which (in the US) sells for USD1. Canada also makes Product X. They make CAN300 of Product X, but it sells for CAN2. That’s equivalent to USD150 worth of Product X.
It gets a lot more complicated, since you have to weight bundles of different goods and some things are more expensive while others are cheaper in the same countries, but that’s the basic idea of how PPP works.
Bob.
I guess those equivalencies aren’t going to be perfect, no matter what you do, but it’s probably as close as we can get.
by hebrew hammer on Nov 28, 2011 1:52 PM EST up reply actions
Hmm…that’s shifted over the last few years. France used to be top 5, and the US was barely top 10. I’ll have to keep an eye out for when newer numbers become available – it’s usually a couple years out of date just because of the time needed to put the data together.
Bob.
the link above was for 2009. here is something from BLS for 2010, which shows the U.S in second at the top of a tight pack of countries, with France the caboose of that group at sixth. Norway is miles ahead of everyone else.

One caveat, though – those are numbers from two different groups. The Wikipedia 2009 numbers are from the Conference Board, which is a non-profit, private organization. Their 2005 numbers are from University of Pennsylvania research. The 2010 numbers are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is a government organization. Without knowing the methodology of those three groups, there may be some variance between them that would make their numbers not directly comparable.
Bob.
Indeed they do. As do most other countries. However, I personally find their individual work ethic (“Waiter? … Excuse me, waiter? … WAITER!?!?”) to be abysmal. But as I believe we noted in the discussion about having Veteran’s Day off from work, Americans actually work more hours to produce less than almost any other country, since we’re way past the point of diminishing returns.

You are aware I’m sure that you are making an argument about the work ethic of an entire country’s worth of individuals based on your personal experience as a tourist.
Is this an example of the reasoning that resulted from the superior cultural and artistic environment of your upbringing compared to the crapola of today? Hopefully future curmudgeons will make better arguments.
By the way, the built-in gratuity in Europe makes for a different relationship between waiter and customer. It’s structural. Blame the system.

Also, appropos of nothing, Americans are rude by just about every measure to foreigners. We interrupt, we make inappropriate/unecessary eye contact, we don’t like our personal space invaded (which is one American tradition I heartily endorse), and we don’t haggle. Again, this is us being boiled down by every one else in the world, but it’s how we’re viewed. We’re rubes! LOL.

we don’t like our personal space invaded
As opposed to Brazilians, whose idea of personal space in my experience is “your pockets are my pockets.”
But yes, cultural expectations vary a lot between countries. I’ve had to deal with some international companies in my work, and one of the things I’ve tried to do is some quick research on business practices so I could interact with them in an appropriate way. It makes it interesting when you go from dealing with a Japanese company to a Dominican company in the same day, because they are totally different in how you approach business.
Bob.
Oh, yeah. Happened to me in Mexico City…guy on a subway reached right into my pocket. Good thing I was broke at the time. I did, however, give him my best rude American impression and smacked him in the face with my purse, “Soy Americana, asshole!”

I am, indeed, making a generalization – just like the one that says Americans are rude as tourists in Europe. So?
If you really want a full argument about this, I will happily oblidge – something along the lines of the difference in societal norms resulting from a predominantly Protestant (and often extremist) conceptualization of the world and one’s place in it, compared to the far more prevalent papist definition of the individual’s worth in the collective. You will note the far greater numbers of people in France that subscribe to the communist/socialist viewpoint than Americans do; I would argue this is a direct result of the nutured state of the political persona in their culture and the predominance of the Catholic Church therein.
Happier???

I’m almost always happy, thanks for asking. But you just offered a theory about individualism vs. collectivism, with a Protestant vs. Catholic and/or socialist angle. Your original claim was that the French lacked a work ethic. How are these connected? And are you saying that this theory provides stronger evidence about work ethic than, say, GDP per hour?
My primary complaint isn’t that it’s a generalization. It’s that it’s unfounded.
And if you are saying I made a generalization about American tourists, I did not. You brought up your own experience with waiters. It is to that I was referring.

by flyersfaninchicago on Nov 28, 2011 5:19 PM EST up reply actions
I was saying that you didn’t correct another person’s generalization, so why mine?
And my claim about individualism vs collectivism (as you rightly discern) does actually have direct relation to individual productivity. The ‘Protestant work ethic’ is NOT a myth; the Germans really are industrious. You may also notice the (generalization coming here) Catholic countries tend to be the less-productive ones (France, Italy, Spain, etc). If you look at the list of GDP per capita, the US comes in at 7th, Germany 17th … and although the Western European contries have a much longer tradition in the Industrialized economy than other part so fthe world, France is 24th, Spain 25th, Italy 26th. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita) The tendency to the collective is merely an extension of the Catholic leanings – ones that teach you subservience to the Church, and reduce the individual importance of each person. This also stifles what individual drive should motivate people. You hear ‘As God wills it’ as a response to so many things (or some form thereof) – as an excuse, often ahead of actual failure time! Therefore, my claim is that the French, as a predominantly Catholic country and one that still ‘thinks’ like a papal state, do not have the same work ethic as Protestant states. You may now make arguments that the difference is cultural, or resource access, or some other excuse … but first I suggest you read the works of Max Weber. You’ll see what I am suggesting was apparent even centuries ago.

I’ve read Weber. I agree with most of what you are saying here and have made similar arguments myself, though I would argue more for a link to capital, entrepreneurial spirit (individualism), and a greater reliance on the secular structures of science, government and law (as opposed to mysticism), than to say the differences are primarily about a “work ethic.”
This started because I chose to reply to your statement that the French lack a work ethic, which I think misses all of the nuance and sophistication of the argument you are making here in comparing the relative work ethics of modern Protestant and Catholic societies.
You said. “I don’t like the French….They don’t have a work ethic.” That is what I have a problem with.
But I appreciate the exegisis.

Here are more figures. The link below is for annual hours per worker, which I might argue is a closer measure of “work ethic” than GDP, which also includes all the factors of “productivity.”
Sort the 2009 figures and you will not find a division with Protestant countries at the top. Specifically, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway are at the bottom, with 150+ hours separating them from the pack.
http://stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?DataSetCode=ANHRS
Catholic percentages of European populations:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church_by_country#cite_note-FACTBOOK-0
You can choose to call it an “excuse” but GDP takes into account a lot more than the willingness to work: education, technology, management, infrastructure (physical, social and political). As I said, I think Weber points more towards individualism and capitalism than a willingness to work.
/s, more often than not
by flyersfaninchicago on Nov 29, 2011 2:41 AM EST up reply actions
I agree that Weber points to individualism … but I would argue that same individualism is a motivator (“no one else will do it if I don’t” rather than “As God Wills”). Splitting hairs at this point; the social sciences and political philosophy in particular are inexact. (As I would know, having studied it considerably.)
And I still don’t like the damn French.

This doesn’t surprise me at all. My best work comes in spurts, not a sustained period of high efficiency. Meaning I could work a lot less hours and still get the same amount done. Actually, I’d probably get more done because I’d be more well-rested.

So, my guess is that Nodl was waived instead of Shelley because Nodl is injured and Shelley is not. With all the injuries we’ve seen, “not hurt” has become a legit justification to stay on the team. And someone needed to be waived to fit Schenn under the cap.
