We find out if Nodl passed through waivers at12:00 today. You’d have to think another move is forthcoming no matter what happens to Nodl.

Couturier stats for your Tuesday morning
So firstly we’re looking at 4 on 5 situations with all forwards who’ve played over 10 games. Sorted it by TOI/60 so that I get the top 30 PKers in the league based on the time they spend on the PK.
The result is here
Out of that group, Couturier has the second best Corsi Rel on the PK. First place? Jordan Staal. So he’s already playing at a league leading level in driving play forward while on the PK.
Next thing is looking at 5 on 5 situations and sorting by GAON/60 (goals against while player is on ice per 60 minutes). Notice that Couturier is 8th in the entire freaking league with 0.93. Now how to make that more impressive? Look at GAOFF/60 so the goals against the team while player is off the ice. Unlike all but one of the players ahead of him on that list, Couturier has a GAOFF/60 of > 3. So while he’s off the ice >3 goals are being scored/60, while he’s on, <1 goals are being scored per 60. He also has the highest Corsi Rel in that Top 8 and BY FAR has the lowest zone start with 31.7% (only 2 of the 7 ahead of him are less than 50% zone start, with a couple of them at 70+).
I thought I’d get that off my chest and let you guys know. Coz I’m happy.

One has to wonder what he could do in 5vs5 situations if he wasnt paired with Rinaldo and Shelley

What is his 4-on-5 SA/60? And what is his 5-on-5 save percentage?
I find it interesting that you don’t mention his unsustainably high on-ice save percentage when showing how few goals have been scored with him on the ice, let alone how weak his opposition is.
Has Couturier played well? Yes. But you’re cherry-picking stats.

…but is Couturiers competition weaker than his terrible linemates?
And in terms of 4 on 5 is his highest % with Talbot? Is this is true is it driving up his effectiveness?
My initial response was, "I hate you so much right now" but I changed it.
by DLJr on Oct 19, 2011 1:15 PM EDT
I would sure as help hope an Couturier could our perform Shelly and Rinaldo. The one thing I am seeing based on PoL’s post here is that Couturier is succeeded were Betts couldn’t last season in carrying the 4th line and not being drug down but his weak line mates.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011
That was the question I was asking… not if Coots is better than Shelly….
but is the competition her is facing as a 4th liner better than Shelly/Rinaldo/Talbot/Nodl/whoever the hell ends up on 4th line duties.
IE, its no great accomplishment if Coots is beating out some 4th line scrub thats slower than Shelly.
My initial response was, "I hate you so much right now" but I changed it.
by DLJr on Oct 19, 2011 1:15 PM EDT
He is not just beating them out he is destroying them so that is good sign and last season Betts failed to do the exact same thing Couturier is doing now. It is a good sign for an 18 year old.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011

I was thinking last night that if the Flyers had sent Scooter back to juniors, the team would have an extra roster spot (so they wouldn’t have needed to waive Nodl), Holmstrom would be up with the Flyers handling Scooter’s time on the PK and at even strength and Scooter would be playing 20+ minutes in the Q. Not saying that would be the best scenario, but that would probably be the scenario playing out right now.

Ahh got that wrong. Don’t worry, thought SA/60 was shots against, not saves against. As I said, I’m learning. Can you explain how I should use that in the analysis of Corsi though? That’s an honest question, not having a go at you here.

Shorthanded shots against is a pretty good show of how effective they are as a penalty killer. I’m not sure how reliable Corsi is outside of ES.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
Yep but behindthenet.ca says that SA/60 is ‘saves against per 60’ not shots against? Bit confused with that. I can see how shots against per 60 would be a pretty good show of his effectiveness as a penalty killer though yep.

Yeah, I don’t know why Gabe did that, either, but GAON/60 is right there, so it’s not that hard to see the comparisons.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
Yep GAON/60 would’ve been relevant. And it does temper Couturier’s stats a little. Jordan Staal is on 1.99 while Couturier’s on 6.35. That’s a pretty big difference.

Ah, he broke it out into the Corsi components (goals+saves+blocked shots+missed shots). I’d be willing to bet, though, that Fenwick is better here, since I’d say blocking shots on PK is likely to be a skill.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
Hmm so how should I be using all the different components individually? Say (to make things simple) we’re comparing Couturier and Talbot on the PK. Talbot’s Corsi is far lower. However Couturier has fewer blocked shots for, fewer missed shots against, fewer saves against and more goals against…

It’s tough on BtN because he does everything per 60, and you’re really only looking at how effective he is at preventing shots from getting through to the net. I don’t know about others, and I could easily be wrong, but I’d be more curious in his Fenwick Against (goals, shots, misses), since including blocked shots would count negatively on something he’s doing well.

And wtf out of the 7 players ahead of him on GAON/60 (remembering that I was saying this is his GAON/60 and this is why it’s even better than it looks compared to the 7 players ahead of him) his save % is the lowest out of all (and there are no players in the Top 30 of that list who have anything resembling a sustainable save %). Dude if you’re going to shut me down please don’t rely on people not actually double checking your comments.

His 5-on-5 Sv% is .963, highest of any Flyers with more than three games. Did you not switch back from 4 v 5?
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
Yep I switched back to 5 on 5 but I was comparing him to the league leaders in that category (GAON/60) – not the Flyers. I’ve linked the exact chart I was looking at when making my comment above. And his 5-on-5 sv% is lower than the 7 people ahead of him on that chart. If I was comparing him to Giroux or something and saying he’s better than Giroux defensively then sure that sv% is important. But I was comparing him to other people who have low GAON/60.

But they are all still getting lucky. 963 at ES is unsustainable. It doesn’t help that other players in that category are getting lucky, too.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
Yep they are all getting lucky. My point was this in this conversation of league leaders at GAON/60 we’re still looking at a (not-quite, but getting there) level playing field in terms of save %.
It’ll be interesting to see how it pans out. One thing to note is that these guys have ‘banked’ an unsustainably high save %. It’s not necessary that their save % will, from hereon in, be lower than the average goaltender’s save %. It will probably, from hereon in, be equal to the average goaltender’s save %. That doesn’t really mean much but just a note for whenever we say unsustainably high.

If you’re going to call him on anything, it should be ShotsAgainst/60 at 4 v 5. Only Schenn has a lower rate among forwards, and he only played four games.
I’m not even sure Geoff checked the stats, to be honest. He was just pointing out things that would provide context to your stats, if you didn’t want them to be viewed as cherry-picked.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
My main issue with Geoff’s comment was:
I find it interesting that you don’t mention his unsustainably high on-ice save percentage when showing how few goals have been scored with him on the ice, let alone how weak his opposition is.
I read that as implying that I’d deliberately left those things off to prove a point, which was 100% not the case. A look at my linked charts show I hadn’t even opened up the shooting %s. I’m new to these and don’t automatically know every single number to look at.
One thing he could’ve correctly called me out for was confirmation bias. I had a feeling that Couturier’s PK stats in particular would be impressive, so I went looking for stats that would confirm that and found them. Perhaps if I’d gone in looking to prove Couturier wasn’t so good at the PK I’d have focussed on different stats. That would have been a valid comment to make.

I didn’t interpret it as a question – more as a challenge. Rubbed off the wrong way. Based on the replies to your comment, sounded like a lot of people didn’t bother double checking but assumed that his SAON/60 and save % refuted my earlier argument. Anyway, forget it.

I think you likely figured this out during the conversation but I think its mostly used to bring context into the situations. You could have a middling CORSI score but if the goalie behind you is putting up astronomical numbers when your on the ice it will seriously deflate you’re GAON/60 even if its not your defensive play that is leading to these results.
My initial response was, "I hate you so much right now" but I changed it.

Did anyone read Jim Jackson’s article on CSN Philly about 5 Flyers rivalry’s. If not it’s pretty good
Anywhere there was a blurb on there that made me laugh, I also had no idea what he was talking about:
The animosity between the Flyers and Lightning is beginning to perk up again. These two clubs have a little history to build upon. They experienced two ferociously competitive playoff series, with each team claiming victory once. They even, once upon a time, came close to blows in the parking lot, gang style, outside of the St. Pete Times Forum.
Can anyone fill me in on what he is talking about? Maybe I knew but forgot.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
We beat the Lightning in 6 games in the 95-96 Conference Quarterfinals, and lost to them in 7 games in the 03-04 Conference Finals. Both series got pretty ugly, as I remember.

April 8, 1998 — The Flyers out-scored Tampa Bay 5-0 in the third period en route to a 6-1 road win. John LeClair (2-0-2) scored twice and Mike Sillinger (1-1-2) had two points. In the third period explosion that came in a span of 11:05, five different Flyers scored and Paul Coffey, Alexandre Daigle and Sillinger each picked up two points. Philly outshot TB 37-16 including 14-3 in the last period. Sean Burke picked up the win by making 15 saves. The Flyers last three goals all came via the PP and was was 3-for-9 in the game compared to Tampa Bay’s 0-for-3. Andrei Nazarov was ejected after he cut Daniel Lacroix during a brawl which also involved the Lightning’s Sandy McCarthy and Darcy Tucker with 6:31 to play and which led to five misconducts and 69 PIMs, 27 to Philadelphia and 42 to Tampa Bay ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaEZ-jVr9vk ). According to media reports, Eric Lindros, who did not play, and other Flyers confronted Nazarov in the parking lot outside the arena following the game due to what was perceived as a sucker punch by Nazarov against Daniel Lacroix who received 48 stitches around his left eye and missed the next four games. Said Lindros “What he did was gutless, the incident won’t be forgotten.” Kjell Samuelsson, however, interceded and separated the pair. Nazarov commented “There were six of them, and I thought they might try to jump me. They could have. It would have been one against six. I told them to save it for the ice. If you want me, come and get me on the ice.” Luke Richardson fought Enrico Ciccone in the game’s final minute ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rsgyavnXpU ).

I need to ask everyone a question, because I’d like everyone’s input
What exactly does Kimmo Timonen do on this team that would support the amount of money he makes a year?
If Pronger was in and Timmo was out, do you think the defensive woes would be as bad as they are, better, or worse?
Why doesn’t he make our powerplay better, or play point on the powerplay?
Maybe it’s because I don’t pay attention to the stats, or perhaps i’m just biased because I’ve never thought Timonen was worth the money, but I really don’t understand what makes him so valuable.
I’m probably wrong in this case, but I’d really like to see an argument into what he brings to the team and what makes him so valuable

He plays against the hardest competition of any of our regular D-men at ES and keeps the team from falling apart when the other high-paid, injury-prone stud D-man goes out with a viral/face/knee/back issue.
Also, he’s getting paid that much this year as windfall from being worth that money and probably more when he signed the contract.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
I’m completely curious to see what would happen if Kimonen was out for 6 weeks and how pronger handled it, or rather how the defense would handle it

The defense would handle it better than if Pronger were out, but I’d suspect worse than if Coburn or Carle were missing. It’s tough for me to tell with all the issues in D zone coverage right now to what extent Carle and Coburn are knocking on the door for the position of second best.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
First do me a favor and look at what year he signed his contract, and what other contracts were given out that year (Gomez, Drury, Briere, Shouray, Schneider, Hannan, etc.)
Also, you aren’t putting any value in that he actual plays in the games (80, 77, 82, 82 in the regular season since being here).
We can go off from there if you like, but those are a couple of simple things to get you started.
should i restrict the contract search to defenseman during that offseason?

Comparatively speaking, he’s outperforming the other players who received contracts in his range.
Out of context though, the contract still looks like a monster. Then again, it’s probably silly to take things out of context

He was never going to perform to that contract IMO, the fact there were other horrendous contract given out around then makes it ok IMO. He gets consistently tough assignments, performs pretty well from a possession metric POV, but I haven’t looked in to anything on the PK yet or his point production. I’m hoping Eric will take it at that point as I don’t have the time to deep dive it currently and he has his own data base.
well no this is good enough for me. I didn’t need an in-depth as much as a summary with key points.
you’re relieved

He’s currently 10th(T) in the league in Assists. Hes currently 16th(T) in the league in +/-. He’s currently 16th(T) in the league in Blocked shots.
He not only plays the hardest competition on the team but he’s mentored Coburn into being able to do the same.
He plays the Pivot/Point on the PP and has generated 6 PPP’s this season.
In his 5 years with the Flyers he has only missed 7 games in the regular season.
He has consistently been one of the teams leaders in TOI and plays on both the PK and the PP.
Theres a start for you.
My initial response was, "I hate you so much right now" but I changed it.

Well about that toughest competition thing…
In 07/08 he played the 4th toughest, Coburn played the 2nd toughest and performed better in terms of CorsiRel with harder zone starts.
in 08/09 He did play the toughest comp but had a very unspectacular CorsiRel, Coburn played the 3rd toughest and sparkled in CorsiRel with tougher zone starts
in 09/10 he and Coburn were asked to cover up the glaring holes at the #5 and 6 Dman guys. He played the 3rd hardest comp and was 4th in CorsiRel. Coburn got the 5th hardest, but again outperformed on CorsiRel with harder zone starts; though I’d probably give the edge to Timonen that year.
In 10/11 when he played mostly with Coburn, he faced the toughest competition and had the 2nd highest CorsiRel.
I haven’t looked at points yet or BZS, but Coburn doesn’t appear to have leaned on Timonen during his development as much as has been suggested. Basically 10/11 was his best year IMO in terms of the non traditional stats, and he played it mostly with Coburn.

Why he is so valuable is exactly the point of you not noticing his game. Pronger may be the Filet, but Timmo is the asparagus, Lyonnaise potatoes, creamed spinach, mushroom & onions and the wedge salad. None of these things should be overlooked

Breaking:
I think Homer is going to announce I’ve been traded to Tampa Bay for a defenseman.
At least, that’s one possible explanation for why “Tampa Bay Lightning” just followed me on Twitter.
Ecstatic to be joing the Florida Panthers Organization!! Awesome day... Truly a dream come true.

Is it a verified account? I’ve been followed by fake famous accounts before and I was so excited…until I checked their tweets :(
I <3 our rookies.

Haha. Okay. Shame, though. Because being traded to Tampa wouldn’t be half-bad. I hear the weather’s nice this time of year :)

Tampa Bay follows everybody on twitter. I got followed by them before, then a few days later, they dropped me like a hot potato.
Anyone have a good site for Sabres gear (not sweaters, just shirts etc.)?
I don’t feel like joining DBTB to post this. I figured BSH’s are savvy enough. Needs to ship to NC.

Are you looking for something creative, like Kreider’s? Or just standard Saber’s gear?
My initial response was, "I hate you so much right now" but I changed it.

Standard. No other teams have a “Kreider”.

I’m trying to branch out with my own site Odd Man Rush apparel but I don’t have the ideas for the other teams. Plus my best one, the Skinner t-shirt, was nixed for copyright issues. Haha. Still working on them though.
