I’m wondering if Gus will still be in the lineup when Pronger returns. My guess is Lilja sits when Pronger gets back. I think that’s probably a good thing. Meanwhile, the Flyers may have to keep Holmstrom in the lineup just to win faceoffs. This team is horrible at winning draws.

On the title: we really need some solid fourth line players. Shelley and Rinaldo are just wasting space, and that is more clear when they both don’t even get 4 minutes.

Who could take their place and play solid?

Putting Pronger on the 4th line instead of Shelley and Rinaldo would certainly be interesting, but probably not the best use of his talents.

I thought Rinaldo actually brings something to the table. He forced a turnover than lead to the JVR goal and has really laid out some big open ice hits.

by chrislanci on Nov 3, 2011 8:26 AM EDT up reply actions

i agree. unlike shelly who is more or less afraid to throw a hit now with the fear of getting suspended again, rinaldo plays a strong game, throws his body around and you don’t hear a whole lot of negativity when he’s on the ice. he should receive more than 4 mins a game, he’s basically a better version of carcillo with a lot less red flags and carcillo played more than 4 mins a game while he was here.

by raytag on Nov 3, 2011 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Rinaldo was suspended 4 times last year in the AHL. That’s a lot of red flags.

And I’m saying it’s completely relative, since Rinaldo gets misconducts for just opening his mouth. If anything, they have equal red flags.

sure they are in the same ballpark, but at least unlike carcillo, rinaldo doesn’t have that huge X on his back for every little move he makes.

by raytag on Nov 3, 2011 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

I beg to differ. It’s not just here on BSH that people consider him BatShitCrazy. It took Steve Downie a couple years to shake the judgement that he was a loose cannon – and he still racks up penalty time, just he scores as well. Zac Rinaldo had a reputation coming from the London Knights that he was a lunatic, and his 331 PIMs in one season with the Phantoms did nothing to dispel it.

by MaximumTalbot on Nov 3, 2011 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I still view Downie as somewhat of a loose cannon. I drafted him for my fantasy team specifically to be my PIM guy. I was pleasantly surprised when he started bringing in points too.

I loved Downie after watching him in the WJC games. He was great against the best team USA could put out against.

by chrislanci on Nov 3, 2011 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm. Two majors and two misconducts with 42 PIMs after 12 games thus far this season would certainly support your argument. I have no problem with 200 PIM and a half-point per game; if anything that is the prototypical Flyers forward to me (like Tocchet or Clarkie).

you don’t hear a whole lot of negativity when he’s on the ice

What did you mean by this?

by Eric T. on Nov 3, 2011 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

well last night for example, he made one of the better of the game that led to jvr scoring a goal. went for the hit, stick down, caused a turnover. in the games he has played, for the most part, the commentary has praised his game.

by raytag on Nov 3, 2011 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

So you meant you don’t hear negativity from the announcers?

Not trying to pick a fight, just trying to understand what you were getting at. I thought you might mean that the players were positive when he was on the ice, or that the fans were, but it sounds like you meant the announcers.

by Eric T. on Nov 3, 2011 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The best part is despite being on the ice for only four minutes, they were on the ice for two of the Flyers four non-matching minors.

They did their best to put the Sabres back in it.

by EREX21 on Nov 3, 2011 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I dunno the cheapest salary besides RFA Downie 1.9 million on that list is 3.5 million you can’t have > 7 forwards making over 3.5 million just isn’t going to happen.

And Downie returned Carle so that was a clear win in that trade.

The biggest mistakes Homer made IMO was the Randy Jones contract which forced us to no resign Knuble. Knuble would have been a huge upgrade over whoever Richards was forced to play with the past two seasons.

by chrislanci on Nov 3, 2011 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Yep and Lupul + Umberger + 2 1st round picks essentially got us Pronger. Basically we’ve done a good job at accumulating forward talent and in the past have managed to use that to trade for defensive talent. Not sure if history’s going to repeat itself with the way things are looking.

Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

by PursuitOfLappyness on Nov 3, 2011 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

History won’t repeat itself in that we didn’t trade forwards for defense but we did trade forwards for younger forwards and a draft pick used on a forward, one who looks pretty good in his role.

Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

That is all.

by EREX21 on Nov 3, 2011 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

We traded two top six forwards on a very deep team for four top six forwards that now get shunted around the 3rd/4th lines (when everyone’s healthy). At the same time we’re probably going to lose one of Coburn/Carle this offseason and then lose Timonen and Pronger’s talents will wane too. We will soon have an elite forward corps and a mediocre defense unless trades/free agent signings fill those gaps.

And unfortunately Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is playing very well, but I really can’t wait till Couturier proves himself to be better than RNH.

Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers have a pretty good group of young forwards, and Bob is in the same age group. I’d love to see an effort to put some quality d-men in their early 20’s in the system to replace Timonen & Pronger before they fall apart.

I don’t understand, all I know is you hate Eminger signing.

by chrislanci on Nov 3, 2011 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

The trade was:

Carle + 3rd for Eminger, Downie, & 4th.

Eminger was acquired four months earlier for a 1st. So that’s Carle + 3rd for 1st, 1st, and 4th.

But the Flyers could only afford Carle with Briere on LTIR. So when Briere came back, the club couldn’t bring him off LTIR and keep Giroux without:

waiving Vaananen
waiving Metropolit
trading Upshall + 2rd for Carcillo

So the Flyers acquired Carle, 3rd, & Carcillo for:

1st, 2nd, Downie, Vaananen, Metropolit, & Upshall.

That’s a lot more complicated than “Carle for Downie”.

True but it terms of saying boy the Flyers regret giving up Downie. I am at peace with losing him because Carle has been so good. Coupled with the lack of progress from Bourdoun and Marshall, Carle is a huge need.

My baseball fan instincts suggest it is awkward to analyze trades like this (“SHOULDA TRADED DAT BUM BROWN AND KEPT LEE IN 2009!”)

However, what it does show is the incredibly incrementalistic thinking on the part of Homer. This progression of trades shows a lack of overall direction. The accumulation of talent is not driven by an overarching plan. We thought last year that the plan was to load up on forwards and defense and go light in goal. But maybe that was accidental, and the next move was to get better in goal, and younger at forward. Of course, this does not match the accumulation and combination of age and UFA status on D.

a) Ilya Bryzgalov's contract b) Ryan Howard's extension (c) Mike Vick's extension (d) Greek bonds from 2009

by Bud in TN on Nov 3, 2011 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’m not a fan of revisionist history and I’m not trying to say “should have kept Downie!”

What I’m saying is that the trade wasn’t Carle for Downie, it was multiple layers beyond that. Oh, I’m also saying Randy Jones sucks.

I did get a Jagr shirt since my boss is a huge Penguins fan and he spent 20 minutes this morning telling me that Jagr didn’t want to come to Pittsburgh because he didn’t want to play in Crosby and Malkin’s shadow because of the “Jagr ego” effect. Sigh.

It makes me laugh thinking of Giroux being brought into the coach’s office, being sat down in front of Lavvy and Holmgren. The room’s really dark with only a hanging lamp, Holmgren is leaning back with his arms crossed, looking away angrily. Lavvy is there gesturing with his hands, bringing Giroux closer before laying down the most important line of this private meeting: “Do Everything Please.”

As long as Rinaldo keeps playing smart hockey, I don’t mind him. At all. If he can be Patrick Kaleta – apparently he worked on PK the week he was on the Phantoms – I’ll love him.

But at the moment, all he does is hit people and take penalties. He’s making progress though.

We have Briere and Hartnell to take bonehead penalties, and Talbot is supposed to hit people. Rinaldo isn’t useful.

07-08: 5.0
08-09: 4.9

That shouldn’t be able to happen. And of course he’s more useful than Shelley. Rinaldo is probably more useful than Shelley already.

He actually starts on the PK this year (in general), but the sabres use a lot of forwards to kill a 2-minute penalty and don’t take a whole lot of them.

I think I figured out what it was. The producer probably was telling Edzo something off mic. Edzo didn’t want to talk because Doc was talking so instead he wrote down OK on a piece of paper that happened to be on top of the telestrator. He didn’t realize he was drawing on the screen then had to erase it quickly.

I dunno, the OK was drawn out a lot slower and more jig-jaggedy than I’d expect from someone writing with pen on paper; I think it had to be on the telestrator.

But regardless of what the reason was, it was hilarious and I’m surprised not to find it on youtube and Puck Daddy and the like.

I can’t believe I’m about to ask such a rookie question. However, does the opening faceoff of every period HAVE to be at center ice? The only reason I ask is because I believe to start the 3rd we had a power play as a result of the shenanigans at the end of the 2nd period and was just thinking about the faceoff rule to begin a power play.

It’s a tightrope, honestly. You don’t want to spank, because that doesn’t teach anything, but you have to have discipline. I take away the things he loves most (junk food, tv, legos) and I don’t make idle threats. I’ve thrown toys away in the past. He had exactly one tantrum at age 2 and I left him in the store and walked away (I still could see him, so he was safe). He never did it again.

But all kids work differently. What works for one kid might not work for the next one. The most important thing is to set rules and stick to them and never waiver. Kids see weakness out of one or both parents and they exploit it. Smart little mfers.

What kind of plane is it? Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big ol' Tylenol.

by doubleh on Nov 3, 2011 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno, I feel that spanking was good at teaching me “don’t do that”, but maybe that’s just me. And I know attitudes on that have changed over the past decade or so. But yes, I can definitely understand that you don’t make idle threats. If you back off they’ll run all over you. Being id-driven, as you say, they’ll have absolutely no problem exploiting a loophole if they find it.

by hintzy64 on Nov 3, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

As evidenced below, I think the whole ‘not spanking’ thing is weak. It’s a little like training a dog – a quick whack on the nose that shocks more than hurts is far more effective than simply saying “no” at first – and it progresses to where the saying of “no” brings the association of the shame of the smack, so the physical is no longer necessary, just the threat thereof.

But hey – if other forms of discipline work for your kids, go ahead. I figure my kids will be a lot like me, in that I’ll need to employ electric shocks just to get them to eat their peas.

Maxime Talbot - in the Orange and Black ... better than chocolate and peanut butter!

by MaximumTalbot on Nov 3, 2011 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

OK, my issue with spanking isn’t corporal punishment, per se. After all, my Dad spanked me and I certainly don’t blame him for child abuse. I just don’t think spanking or hitting teaches you anything than how to hit. i.e., it doesn’t really make you think twice about what you just did, just that you don’t want to get caught next time. Also, I feel that when employed regularly, it makes a child think it’s OK to hit when they are angry. For instance, I hit my Dad back once when I was a teenager.

So I think making them understand what they did wrong is more important, but that’s just me. I spanked my son once—when he did something really egregious as a 1-1/2 year old—and it was worse on me than it was on him. He was terrified. Then he became terrified of me. I just don’t feel that’s a good environment and I’m not a super hippy dippy person as you well know.

To each his own, but that’s my two cents FWIW.

What kind of plane is it? Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big ol' Tylenol.

I hit my Dad back once when I was a teenager.

Wow. Only once? You were boring.

As long as the understanding that it is measured and punitive, not simply cruel, is impressed on the child, I think spanking is fine. I think that as they develop more advanced understanding of actions and reactions, and consequences for their actions, the corporal punishmnet aspect is easily reduced and replaced (as you suggest) with priviledge reduction. However, my personal experience said that being sent to my room without dinner meant I could read in peace and didn’t have to eat my mother’s rotten cooking. :)

Notwithstanding the overall tilt of the linked story about Bryzgalov, I must say that this made me chuckle. The guy tells it like he sees it, and doesn’t try to filter anything.

But Bryzgalov has always been an unfettered soul in a game built on conformity. In Anaheim, he said of Edmonton, "here is like North Pole." At the 2010 Olympics, as the backup for the Russian team, he was asked what he thought as Canada raced out to a 6-1 lead in the quarter-final before starter Evgeni Nabokov was pulled. The vast majority of the team had refused to speak to the media, marching through the mixed zone like soldiers, but Bryzgalov stood there and said, "What I think? I’m thinking, ‘Uh-oh.’"

On the hockey prospectus article

Using short handed goals to establish Goal Differential in PKs seems odd. I consider short handed goal too infrequent to really be revelant criteria.

It’s an option. One that I completely owned with Richards on my team a few years back. But what’s he done for me lately? Nothing, that’s what.

I really hope he goes to the AHL next year with Backlund and Leights gone. Get him some NA conditioning. Then, and I hate saying this, when Bobs leaves in 2 years he could be a great backup.

Faceoffs

Is this something that we are going to have to worry about long term or is it just a product of the injuries right now? I know the game last night was a very small sample size but I was wondering if everyone is content with our roster on draws as is when it’s healthy.

Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

Most people are not content, and it’s been brought up several times as an area of concern since the trades in the off season.

What do you think needs to happen to improve it? Roster moves, more time spent on coaching…etc?

I have no idea what has been done in practices, but career numbers seem to point to Briere and Giroux being just sub 50% guys, with Talbot slightly lower. I’m guessing the team was aware of that, and said well f it, or wasn’t aware and that’s another way of saying f it, we don’t think it’s important. Couturier has been pretty horrible, and we’ll see how Schenn does when he gets back. I think it’s something they have chosen to accept this year looking at how the roster was put together though.

Thanks D. I’ve been trying to put together a few different what if scenarios in my head but it’s hard to really figure it. Part of me thinks with the young guys we have maybe they could develop into better guys in the circle but obviously guys like Danny and Max would probably be as they are for the long term (meaning hanging around career averages.) Do you think it’s something that they could maybe improve at the deadline by adding a strong centerman? Appreciate your input…

Depends on who’s out there, and their banked cap space. I wouldn’t add a guy this year because I still don’t think the team is good enough to truly contend for the cup, though I’m anxious to look at some team level numbers I value at the quarter pole and half way point to see how the team is performing versus my expectations.

As far as working on it, I really hope Couturier works on it in the off season if this sample size is in any way indicative of his skills on the dot.

Just watched it. These things are awesome. It’s fantastic. I love that they do this now. I had heard about them and such but this is the first one I watched. Kaleta is a shithead. He uses said shit head to hit people in the piles. He did this here….and here…..and here. He is being suspended 4 games.

The only thing that would make it better is if Shanny had ANY personality what so ever.

I’d love to hear him break character one time (yes I believe the horrible personality is intentional as to not allow anyone to read any emotion in to any ruling), and go, “are you f-ing kidding me, yeah he’s gone, 10 games, and if you are complaining, well then you don’t know shit.”

I hold out hope that if he’s suspended enough times he’ll stop doing stupid stuff like that and do what he’s actually good at which is drawing penalties and causing trouble.

Holmstrom back to Adirondack

And Danny is likely back in.

Do they bump Briere up to where Couturier was last night on the second line or keep him on the third with Simmonds and Nodl?

by everybodyhitswoohoo on Nov 3, 2011 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

I prefer Cooter with Simmond and Nodl than with JVR and Voracek. Briere needs to be sheltered anyway, no sense in putting him with a solid checking line.

by hebrew hammer on Nov 3, 2011 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

So what was Briere’s injury anyway. Was it ever disclosed?

by j reed on Nov 3, 2011 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

All they said was upper body, but I don’t know if they did reveal it. On DNL, Lisa Hilary said she had her inklings on what his injury was, but then just left us hanging. Hope it’s not another one that lingers.
