Eric Wellwood called up by Philadelphia Flyers

Photo

Guess that James van Riemsdyk injury, healthy scratch, then injury again is really a relatively serious thing.

Eric Wellwood was called up from the Adirondack Phantoms late this afternoon, the team announced, and he'll be eligible to play Saturday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are bad at hockey.

Wellwood has eight points in eight games with the Phantoms so far this season. He's able to fit in under the cap with his $580,000 cap hit rather easily. They now have $522,461 in room to work with under the salary cap, thanks to LTIR exemption, following Ben Holmstrom's demotion yesterday and Wellwood's call up today.

Harry Zolnierczyk is still with the team, and with Matt Read still out with an injury and now this new ailment to van Riemsdyk, another forward was necessary. Ben Holmstrom was sent down on Thursday prior to Danny Briere's return to the lineup, and the roster once again stands at 23 players. Is your head spinning yet?

Seriously though, we're making a trip to Glens Falls next weekend. What are the chances we'll be watching a full Phantoms roster a week from tonight?

Flyers press release available after the jump.

Star-divide

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have recalled 5-11, 179-lb LW Eric Wellwood from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.  Wellwood will be available for Saturday's game vs. Columbus and will wear #47.

Wellwood, 21 (3/6/90), has four goals and four assists for eight points in eight games for the Phantoms this season.  In 73 games for the Phantoms as a rookie last season, Wellwood contributed 16 goals and 12 assists for 28 points.  He also had an assist and a plus-1 rating in three games for the Flyers last year.

Wellwood was selected by the Flyers in the sixth round (172nd overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

The Flyers return to the ice on Saturday night when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets (7pm, CSN, 94 WIP).  Philadelphia Flyers ticket information is available now by calling 215-218-PUCK (7825) or visit PhiladelphiaFlyers.com.

Hey, remember when a lot of people thought Sestito was going to be the 12th or 13th forward?

Now he’s like 6th in line to get called up from the AHL. Poor guy.

by Eric T. on Nov 4, 2011 6:44 PM EDT reply actions

Wouldn’t he have to sit for two games if he were called up? That’s probably keeping them from calling him up.

by roadrunnerdrummer on Nov 4, 2011 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, seems to be the case. I’m sure the Flyers would love another Big Tough Guy.

But if that’s all it were, they could’ve picked any game where they had a healthy scratch, sent the scratch down and called him up to serve out his suspension. That’s what they should be doing if they foresee any scenario where they might want him.

They haven’t, so I’m assuming they don’t. Either that or maybe they just haven’t had a healthy waiver-exempt scratch yet?

by Eric T. on Nov 4, 2011 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, he’s not competing against Holmstrom/Wellwood/Z at all, he’s competing to be the not-worst of Shelley/Rinadlo/Sestito.

Do you think he would be an upgrade over Rinaldo?

by Anders Jensen on Nov 4, 2011 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Rinaldo has really opened my eyes so far this season. He is a far better hockey player than I thought, and perhaps all that “me loco” stuff was really just an act, because he has yet to take a really stupid penalty this season. He’s coming off one of his best games where he layed out a monster hit, that was improperly penalized, scored a goal, and showed some surprising speed in forcing a giveaway that almost turned into another goal, even if it was aided by the ref interfering. He actually has been reminding me of Carcillo when he was playing really well two seasons ago.

by Gizmoitus on Nov 4, 2011 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

he has yet to take a really stupid penalty this season

I’ll agree, if what you meant was that he hasn’t done anything completely batshit crazy. But we’re talking about a guy who’s spent 50 minutes on the ice and 42 minutes in the penalty box. A guy who has been in the box in seven out of nine games played. A guy who is second in the NHL in penalties taken per 60 minutes. A guy who has been called for holding the stick, tripping, roughing, fighting, unsportsmanlike conduct, slashing, charging, and two misconduct penalties — in 50 minutes on the ice.

Let’s not pretend he’s been a model of discipline. If he’s exceeded expectations, it’s only because we expected him to be suspended by now.

by Eric T. on Nov 4, 2011 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, and as for the claim that the hit was improperly penalized — as I commented here, the rulebook doesn’t set a clear guideline but leaves it up to the ref to subjectively decide whether a hit is too violent, which makes it basically impossible to say that the penalty was improper — if you called it a monster hit, then the ref has discretion to say “too monster for me”.

And the one thing that’s not discretionary is that if he leaves his feet before the hit, it’s a penalty. And while I can’t say conclusively, at the 6 second mark of this video it sure looks to me like he jumps into the hit.

by Eric T. on Nov 4, 2011 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

good solid hit

the guy has a knack for it. what you call “jumping into the hit” can also be classified as momentum and what we call in the field “throwing your weight around”. hard to say it was the right call or wrong call, some refs call that and some dont, ill take that hit everytime with those odds. but we can agree that this is a guy you want on your side and not on the other team. he brings a presence that shelly doesn’t provide. ill take rinaldo over shelly all day, hes got some upside and wheels as he showed in that footrace he won to go in on a breakaway. that looks like flyers hockey to me. love the way he plays. but im not saying he needs 10 + mins toi a game

by duffy428 on Nov 5, 2011 2:35 AM EDT up reply actions

that looks like flyers hockey to me.

EXACTLY. The people here who keep bashing Zac and calling him crazy must NOT be fans of true Flyers hockey. Remember in the 70’s when we won 2 cups how all the other teams hated the Flyers because they were too physical? Well thats what we need. Punish the opponents. Hockey is being slowly turned into soccer on ice. Removing HITTING and FIGHTING is ruining the game. If you want to see that, watch soccer. If you want to see bone breaking devestation then leave hockey alone and stop suspending people for playing a tough game. Suspensions for be for cheap shots only. If its a hit in the normal course of hard play, it should be allowed!

by lava96 on Nov 5, 2011 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

We’re fans of WINNING. Zac Rinaldo doesn’t help us do that, stop bitching that we don’t have enough untalented assholes skating around the ice doing nothing.

If you want to see bone breaking devestation then leave hockey alone and stop suspending people for playing a tough game.

First of all, I don’t want to see players breaking bones. 2nd nobody has EVER been suspended for playing a tough game.

Funny, but I don’t think you get to tell other people what they are and aren’t fans of because of your opinion. The “bashing” of Rinaldo is for good reason at this point. Has he played some good hockey? Yes, to this point in a young season. Last year, as has been said here many times, he had more suspensions than goals, and so far while playing ok hockey he has almost as much time in the box as on the ice. Is some of that due to his reputation? Sure, but not a great portion. So he is still some what out of control and can still be a liability on the ice. And I’m sure I don’t want to know what you would let go on the ice, since after this statement:

If you want to see bone breaking devestation then leave hockey alone and stop suspending people for playing a tough game. Suspensions for be for cheap shots only. If its a hit in the normal course of hard play, it should be allowed!

I think you should stick with MMA or something.

Rinaldo is the man. Steve downie was also like that and how many goals did he score last year. Rinaldo is the man better than Shelley who ate up a spot on the bench against new jersey. I was at the game and the only times I saw him on the ice were during commercial breaks stretching those legs. So the flyers were automatically playing with a short bench it was like an injury had already happend. Not to mention it was the second of a back to back game. Dressing him makes no sense to me at all

by Ibleedorangeandblack on Nov 5, 2011 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Steve Downie scored 35 goals in 45 OHL games at age 19.

Zac Rinaldo’s best season in Juniors is 10 goals in 56 games at age 18.

The two are not even close.

Two different arguments. Well, maybe three.

1. According to a lot of people (both on the team/coaching staff/FO and not) Zac and Jody serve different purposes. To which I say dress neither, get three solid players and roll four lines. (Which wasn’t your argument really, but it applies to what you said in general.)

2. Rinaldo has yet to prove he can score that many goals anywhere, let alone the NHL. The main reasons I see for that are that he’s in the box so much, and then the talent to actually score that many.

3. Rinaldo is the man. That’s your opinion.

Why do they even bother paying for the transportation and calling these guys up? The coach has already shown that if the game is within 1 goal in the 2nd period he stops playing anyone that isn’t named Coburn, Carle, Timmonen, Mezarjos, Giroux, Jagr, Hartnell, Talbot, Simmonds, Vorecek, and Briere. If he’s going to doom us by putting Simmonds in the shootout anyway, at least let Rinaldo and Harry Z get some ice time. Harry seems to have the speed that can offset any mistakes he might make, and Rinaldo scored a goal, killed someone, and had another great chance. Sure he’ll probably take a penalty, but say he gets 1 more shift and someone like Briere gets one less shift, it basically evens out as Briere would hook someone anyway….

by ThatsGoodKoolAid on Nov 4, 2011 9:19 PM EDT reply actions

Haha, welll yeah Danny does enjoy the occassional stick, but considering he’s half the size of everyone else it’s almost like he can’t go out and compete any other way. He gets roughed up a lot.

I agree with you 100% though, and the most worrisome thing to me is how he is wearing Giroux out. I mean the kid is a horse, but eventually he’s going to get injured, and playing him more than your defenseman?

The biggest problem is that Lavvy no longer trusts the 4th line. My feeling is that this is because he continues to dress Jody Shelley, who is a complete liability and game losing turnover waiting to happen. It’s kind of depressing to look back on the days not that long ago when we arguably had the best 4th line in hockey, which were used to great effect to wear teams down and take away their ability to force matchups, to the modern era when guys don’t step on the ice for whole periods at a time now.
