I really don't know if I would have rathered Couturier be loaned for World Juniors
On the one hand he’ll get a chance to play against quality junior competition – some of the best young players in the world – on a top line of one of the top teams. He’d get that offensive exposure we’re scared he’ll somehow lose because of the role he’s playing.
On the other hand he’s an NHLer, he’s getting experience in the pro leagues, he’s doing well in the situations he’s been given, and he’s an important part of the team (evidenced by Laviolette’s decision to put him out as the top line center when Giroux went down).
"He’s an integral part of our team," said Peter Laviolette. "I don’t know why we would loan him anywhere. It’s different for a player that’s in or out of the lineup, but Sean’s done a terrific job, a real nice job for us. He’s talented in many ways. It would be tough to fork over a guy like that."
I can see that. But are we making this decision for the short-term benefit of this injury riddled team? or are we making this decision based on Sean Couturier’s development? I would rather we focussed on the latter.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

Maybe its just me, but I dont see how a player there scored as much as Couturier will suddenly lose his nose for the net? I know NHL goalies are better then junior goalies, but the few times Couturier have not been stuck with a combination of Harry z/rinaldo/shelley he have looked pretty impressive.
by Anders Jensen on Dec 12, 2011 6:39 AM EST up reply actions
It’s not about losing a nose to the net – more that he’s a 19 year old whose talents are still raw and those talents are not being developed at the moment.

I think it’s better that he stays up. He might hit a wall in terms of conditioning near the end of the season, that’s one thing – but as far as offensive development goes, I think his time of dominating the junior circuit is over. You can do things in juniors you simply can’t/shouldn’t do in the NHL. To develop his offensive talent for the NHL game, practicing and playing with NHL players seems the best shot.
He is at best expected to be the 3rd line center of the future. I think developing him as a checker and a PKer is more fine, he is not penciled in on the depth cart to be a 1st center line 30+ goal scorer. And he will get opportunities to play if players get hurt. You don’t develop scoring touch in the NHL. You develop strength and competitiveness. He is not going to forget how to do take a wrist shot.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011
I think the big argument is that in his current role on the team, he is not getting the chance to learn what moves just won’t work in the NHL but do in the minors, offensively.

Just read on Twitter that Couturier wil be stepping into Giroux’s spot until G gets better. Even if it’s just a game or two, how cool is it for Scooter to center the top line with Hartnell and Jagr? Very col. Shows me that Lavy thinks highly of the kid.

Was just waiting for something to jump on today. I’ve been on the fence about being in a shitty mood.
But honestly, I’m mostly kidding. It’s just funny that people will feel bad for one guy and say another guy has hands of stone. Don’t get me wrong, Cooter > Nodl, but the excuses people are willing to make for some players; “well he is getting to the right areas he is just getting unlucky” but then other players “have zero offensive talent” make me laugh.

He was the most prolific point producer in his class. This projection seems a little low, no? Especially when you have people penciling him in “safely” as an “average top-line center.” (IIRC, Pronman).

I agree with this. And you don’t spend a top 10 pick on someone you expect be your 3rd line center. There has also been a lot of anguish expressed about his linemates and Laviolette’s deployment and although I get that it might be part of a strategy to bring him in slowly. On the other hand he’s playing PK which to me is a lot of pressure.

Yep I’m hoping lanci meant it in terms of Giroux, Schenn and Couturier will be our three centers with Couturier taking on the more defensive responsibilities. I hope.
And to say Couturier won’t ever be a 30+ goal scorer, considering scouts thought he had an amazing shot in juniors and considering his junior production…I can’t reply to that…

Yeah. Couturier’s on pace for a 14-9-23 season. Not spectacular, but Tyler Seguin was an 11-11-22 as a rookie, and Joe Thornton was a 3-4-7 in 58 games. 5-3-8 in 28 games is actually pretty good for a teenage rookie.
Bob.
Tyler Seguin couldn’t find a consistent roster spot on a very good (eventual Stanley Cup winning) team, which cut off his production. Same deal with Couturier, with the added note that his coach loves putting him out in the defensive zone and on the PK. Most top level prospects come into the league on teams that suck and those teams chuck them out on the top line in the offensive zone and enjoy their production (think Ryan Nugent-Hopkins) – it’s an entirely different sort of development for the player who enters the league on a cup contender.

Sure, but Seguin did play 74 games at 12:13 ATOI. Couturier’s averaging only half a minute more per game, with the PK time included.
That was part of what led me to use Seguin, because he did have a somewhat similar first year – not relied on to be the star, picking up time with the organization in an assisting role, with respectable but not excessive ATOI. A Crosby or a Nugent-Hopkins or even a Skinner didn’t have the same sort of role.
Just for the hell of it, ATOI in their rookie season for guys who entered the league at 18 and are still playing:
Crosby 20:08
Kovalchuk 18:32
Bogosian 18:06
Duchene 17:44
Sbisa 17:29
Nugent-Hopkins 17:16
R O’Reilly 16:46

Couturier 12:47

Yep fair enough.
I’d say that Scott Hartnell guy eventually recovered from his 2 goals in 75 games as the #6 overall pick rookie campaign, at least with his current 41 goal pace…

It may simply be a risk versus reward situation. For a team with so many injuries, the risk of injury to Couturier during tournament play outweighs the benefit of him playing at that level of competition especially when he is already playing in the NHL.
If Brzy doesn't do right by Bob I'll kick his $51 million ass across the WFC.
And yes, I'm a female redhead.
So just for pure speculation purposes, let’s just say that Pronger feel into the same situation as Lappy…where he never played again, the team could LTIR him every season to clear cap space but doesn’t that money count against the cap the following year?
I was discussing Pronger over the weekend with someone and this came up and since I am not a cap expert and too tired to look it up myself I figured someone far smarter than I could answer it for me.

I don’t remember what happened with him. Besides being not very good.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

I lived near San Jose in 98/99 when Rathje was with the Sharks. He was outstanding back then. Never did anything flashy, but he was one hell of a stay-at-home D-man. Big, physical d-man who was awesome when it came to positioning.
When the Flyers signed him, I was thrilled. Little did I know, his bones were about to crumble into dust. Damn shame.
If I’m correct, the only issue it causes has to do with the bonus cushion, which doesn’t apply this year. If we are “over the cap” for the next 7 years or whatever is left on Pronger’s deal because he is on LTIR, then the use of the bonus cushion (if it is still around in the new CBA) will lead to a bonus penalty the following year, much like the 1.4M the Flyers are saddled with this year.
by hebrew hammer on Dec 12, 2011 8:26 AM EST up reply actions
Bonus cushion and LTIR are two separate things.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
But they impact one another. If you are over the cap due to using LTIR all year, then any bonuses that would have been applied to that years cap are tacked on as penalties for the next year’s cap.
by hebrew hammer on Dec 12, 2011 8:48 AM EST up reply actions
If the cap is $65M and a team has $1M in bonuses…
Scenario a: they spend $63.5M on active players, $5M on LTIR players
Scenario b: they spend $64.5M on active players, $5M on LTIR players
Scenario c: they spend $63.5M on active players, no LTIR
Scenario d: they spend $64.5M on active players, no LTIR
Which scenarios result in bonus penalties, and in what amount? If LTIR is irrelevant, then scenarios a and c would mean no penalty and scenarios b and d would mean $500k penalties. If LTIR is relevant, then it may be that scenarios a and b mean $1M penalties and scenario d means a $500k penalty.
I know what I believe, but I don’t know why I believe it, so I’ll let an actual expert answer. :)
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
I don’t have a specific section from the CBA to quote at the moment, I can maybe look at lunchtime, but I was thinking the same thing as you Eric. My reasoning is that if the bonus cushion is in use, then bonuses are not being applied to the daily cap and are being withheld from cap numbers until the end of the season. If the team is using the LTIR exemption the entire season, then the bonuses would be forced to carry over to the following season.
I guess that could change if bonuses can be included as being paid in the LTIR exemption.

I’ll try to type up a huge explanation later if I feel better, but you can see CapGeek’s archive from last year and get a better idea of how the calculations worked out in the meantime:

It would be great to know the actual amounts and stipulations of some of these bonuses, but I guess teams keep a tight lid on that.
So the Flyers ended last season with about $79k in actual cap space, but the bonuses put them over the cap, hence the penalty for this year. I guess the difference with Pronger would be that his salary is significantly larger than Lappy’s and would be more likely to be in use throughout the entire year, leaving a potential for 0 cap space at the end of the season.
by hebrew hammer on Dec 12, 2011 11:35 AM EST up reply actions
The trick is that the LTIR credit is only for the amount that you actually exceed the cap by. So since we were weren’t actually exceeding the cap for the entire year, our final LTIR credit is only for the amount we exceeded the cap by at the end and not the full amount of Lappy’s salary. I don’t think my headache will allow me to make a truly coherent explanation right now, so the CapGeek tracker page is the best resource.
There are a whole lot of variables in this area, though. I feel that at least one of either the LTIR rules or the Performance Bonus rules will somehow be different in the next CBA, if not both.
Warning: Arguing the NHL CBA with me could be hazardous to your mental health. Proceed at your own risk.
by DragonGirl0583 on Dec 12, 2011 11:47 AM EST up reply actions
Yea, don’t overdo it. I understand the way the LTIR exemption works, just not sure how the bonuses are factored into and affect that exemption and the following year. I’m working off the understanding that in a normal year (with a cushion) the bonuses do not apply until the end of the season.
The following example is based on the way the bonuses played out last year, and as you said, likely to change with the new CBA:
For next year, with the players already signed there is $4,561,627 in cap space before applying the bonus cushion, and $8,116,627 after applying the cushion. If Carle is re-signed for the same price as Coburn, and Voracek is re-signed at a $500k increase, and Zolnierczyk for the same salary as this season, the Flyers are still $1,666,627 under this year’s cap (assuming Walker is waived, again). If Pronger is injured and forced to stay on LTIR all season, then Matt Walker likely takes the #7 D-man spot with his $1.7M salary and the Flyers are back into the exemption, where they will likely stay all season, using the LTIR exemption space to bring in short term injury call-ups.
In that situation, or a similar one, they will effectively end the season at the limit of the cap, likely spending even more than that on salary. If every single bonus is also achieved under those circumstances, they could be looking at a maximum bonus overage penalty of $3,555,000.
Obviously the penalty won’t be as severe as the cost of a top 6 forward or a top 4 defensemen each year, but I still do not like the prospects of having to deal with situations like that for 5 years of Pronger on LTIR.
by hebrew hammer on Dec 12, 2011 12:52 PM EST up reply actions
It comes back on the cap during the offseason, and they put him back on LTIR day one. The money would never count against the cap during the year.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
So is it just money they have to pay him but it never counts against their cap in any season?

To clarify, it always counts, but they’re allowed to spend extra to replace him. But in much the same way it counts in the offseason cap calculation, it also affects the total amount of payroll committed for the following season, which is used when calculating the amount of money available to sign mid-year extensions for other players.

i called him being the next lindros/priemeu when he didnt return in under 6 months….i mean i havn’t done much stat gathering but i havn’t heard many players come back from a 6 month concussion hiatus and have a lengthy career
So…you missed the career of Patrice Bergeron? Paul Kariya?
Yes, concussions have shortened or ended the careers of plenty of players including Lindros, Primeau, Kypreos, Deadmarsh, Beukeboom…but usually they compounded the problem by rushing back to play without being fully healthy. As much as it would suck for this year, it might be best in the long run for Crosby to not come back this season.

The Allentown Situation
We speculated in an earlier thread that the tenant who the city was trying to remove not only had an axe to grind, but possible legal standing to stall the eminent domain. By the actions of the city dropping the eminent domain claim, it appears we were right (ignore any statement by the city, notice what lawyers do, not what they say). While Geoff and I might enjoy turning this into a business law blog (along with Eurovision, of course), the main takeaway for us as Flyers fans is that, given the legal quagmire that is likely to develop, along with a lot of mud-slinging, it appears that it will be several more years before the Phantoms move to Allentown. Enjoy those trips to Glens Falls, everyone.

He was warned 3 comments into his membership there. Justin F explained his deal to them, and he retorted by saying the only reason he got banned from here was because he said Zherdev was lazy, and all the “cool, in crowd” here were Zherdev supporters. Hilarious.
I'm kind of a dick.
In fairness, he didn’t say he was banned for saying Zherdev was lazy; he said he was banned for making comments that were unpopular here but true, one example of which was his critique of Zherdev.
My favorite part is contrasting his insistence that his comments were unpopular but true with the actual historic record where the discussion was always “you can’t say what I’m saying is TRUE or FALSE ~~ it is an OPINION”.

Also hilarious: the actual reason he got banned was mostly because every conversation on here became all about him, and it was derailing the productive hockey talk. In his first conversation on Raw Charge, I think he’s made it eminently clear how that works.

You know, outside of Philly, it’s pretty easy to get a cheesesteak (YMMV on quality) but VERY difficult to find Tastykakes. Years ago, every once in a while you used to be able to get Tastykakes in the 12-pack in California.

Holy crap, I just looked ahead a little bit and the Montreal and Boston games later this week are both on NHLN. That makes six consecutive games (starting with Buffalo last week) that are televised in my area. I don’t know what to do with myself. (And I’m sure my wife doesn’t know what to do with me either.) I haven’t seen this much Flyers hockey in such a short time span since high school.

by hebrew hammer on Dec 12, 2011 3:34 PM EST up reply actions
Yes, and since even Versus is on a premium tier for me, I’m sort of left in the lurch, and of course GCL is useless for me right now. For a lot of personal reasons, I’m pretty legalistic about not using streams. But the NHL should learn from other industries (music, for example) it is not a good idea to frustrate legally-intending citizens.

I’m inclined to agree, but I’m not sure where the line is between how much the NHL can control and how much is run by cable & satellite providers. I’m sure they both have a share of the blame, but there are so many layers involved between the NHL, the TV networks, the providers, and whoever else. For me, Versus is a regular old cable channel, just a few numbers above the Food Network and the Weather Channel. I realize that’s probably due to the fact that I have Comcast, because I also don’t have to pay for a sports tier to have the NHL Network, but I don’t think either Comcast or the NHL intended for it to be put on a premium tier.

Samsies. When I first tried wine, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon were the only ones I could name, and they were all far too dry. Thought I just didn’t like wine at all. White Zin was the first one I liked. It was my gateway drug. And now I like the dry stuff and think White Zin is too sweet and doesn’t have much flavor/body.
