Ryan Johansen, Columbus – Is extremely popular with his veteran teammates, as so far he hasn’t told the coaches about the tunnel that Rick Nash and Jeff Carter are digging behind the dressing room poster of Raquel Welch
Luke Adam, Buffalo – Has been working hard since the season opener, since he knows the Sabres need to know you’ve had at least a dozen above-average games during your career before they’ll throw a salary cap-destroying contract your way.
However the Read one didn’t get a laugh out of me and disappointed that he didn’t mention Couturier.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.
One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

We touched on this in the recap
But let’s imagine it’s the playoffs and everyone’s healthy and AHL kids can be put on the NHL roster if needed as the roster limit and salary cap have dissolved.
What’s the lineup going to be? It seems that we’re so deep that when everyone’s healthy there will be a few interesting lineup decisions…

Ed Snider said some things connecting concussions to equipment and respect and policemen on the ice. I hear he then waved his cane and yelled at some whippersnappers.
I lol’d.
Also, Giroux, I love you, I love that you want to come back like yesterday but for once Homer is right, you need to slow your roll and get back out there when you are ready and not a second before.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
Im not really so sure Giroux even has a concussion. Im not a doctor and this is all speculation on my part but the hit he took from Simmonds didn’t really seem that bad. All they are saying are concussion like symptoms. That doesnt mean anything really. A person that is sick could say they have flu like symptoms and really just have allergies. I think they are just playing it safe since there is no definite test to say whether it’s a concussion or not. It was originally reported he had whiplash but concussion and whiplash symptoms are almost identical. Both can cause headaches, dizziness, fatigue, ringing in ears, and confusion or dazed feeling. I want them to keep him out as long as they need to so don’t get me wrong. I just think this was a more mild injury and wouldnt be surprised to see him back in a week or so.
"Good game. Let's go eat."
I mean, yeah, concussion-like symptoms would seem to be different from a diagnosed concussion, just like Parkinson’s Syndrome is different from Parkinson’s Disease. However, I’m not so sure that you can definitively diagnose a concussion any other way besides reviewing the symptoms. They can’t open his head and look to see if there is a bruise, MRI and CT scans don’t help, and there is no perfect baseline test. So, in the end, I’m not really sure what the difference would be between “concussion-like symptoms” and “a concussion.”
That said, the knee was pretty brutal. See video…

I agree on the knee. Simonds isn’t the biggest guy in the world but he’s solid. He was going maybe 1/2 to 3/4 speed through the neutral zone trying to get into the play. When you’re jumping, they say it adds more impact which is why it’s a penalty and seriously frowned upon to jump into a check. I think that if Simonds would of just collided with him, the impact would of been far less and might not of hit the head. The game is so fast the “what if’s” and “should of’s” don’t mean much.
I’m far from a doctor but from what I’ve read about concussions, it’s the brain rattling around in your head causing a bruise on the brain. The impact of Simonds knee was pretty hard. Yes G’s neck absorbed most of the impact but who’s to say his brain didn’t rattle inside the head? I’m going to remain optimistic but I really think this injury is worse than what’s being said.

Oh he has a concussion. You could tell when he went off the ice he was wobbling. Check some video of the Mike Richards concussion as well. A guy doesn’t have to be knocked out to have a brain injury. What’s more important is how you’re feeling. Also the way G plays the game, I’d sit him for a couple just as a precaution, because he only knows one speed and that’s 11.
I for one don’t believe a damn thing that Homer says anymore. Every time his mouth moves all I hear is Henry Rollins song, Your a Liar playing on a constant loop.
My teams are the Flyers, Phillies and the Steelers. Deal with it.

OT - shootout
After the Flyers game last night, I flipped to the Sharks-Avs game and the Avs won in the shootout after the Sharks tied the game with 22 seconds left. When the announcer said “both teams will receive a point in the standings” I thought to myself, this game should end in a tie. If two teams play to a tie, then they are evenly matched and it makes for an exciting game/next game. I don’t know why I’m frustrated with this today since it’s completely OT, but the 2nd and 3rd periods of that game were excited cause it was back and forth and IMO not one team should “deserve” to win. Also, looking at the basic box score, the teams were almost even.

Agreed so much. Let them play 5 minutes of overtime, but after that, call it a tie. I hate the shootout.

3-2-1 point systems solves all problems and I agree the shootout sucks especially with only 3 guys. My main problem is the shootout or video game hockey that is the 4v4 overtime is worth the same as the 5-1 win in regulation.

3-2-1 systems do not solve the problem of the shootout being a terrible way to determine a winner.

by bfrank27 on Dec 14, 2011 12:38 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Actually, here’s how I would solve it:
(1) 5 minutes of 4 on 4 as-is
(2) Unlimited 3 on 3 hockey, where penalties are assessed without regard to numbers on the ice (thus,it would be possible to have a 3 on 1 or even 3 on 0 powerplay). This would keep the “excitement” (read: video game-type thrills) of the shootout but much more in line with real play. I can’t imagine full 3 on 3 running more than 5 minutes, and it would have lots of odd-man rushes. Even changing on-the-fly would be hazardous.
Of course, with the current when-healthy Flyers lineup of Jagr, Giroux, Pronger et al, the Flyguys would have an advantage.

In 2015, which one of the following will prove to be a better investment?
(a) Ilya Bryzgalov's contract (b) Ryan Howard's extension (c) Mike Vick's extension (d) Greek bonds from 2009 (e) Papelbon's bloat deal
it would be possible to have a 3 on 1 or even 3 on 0 powerplay
So the goalie then has to take the ensuing faceoff on a “3 on 0” powerplay?
Yeah, maybe that would not work. But the idea is “get the game over.”

Homer could very well be suffering from Post Concussion Syndrome from his cycling incident.
Cognitive or mental symptoms can include confusion or impaired cognition, problems with attention, impaired judgement, and amnesia or other problems with memory, especially short term memory.

It can’t be from the cycling incident. He’s had these symptoms all along. Probably since that eye injury he had early in his playing career.
Can we get Bourdon and Marshall real numbers yet? 46 and 43 are 1) Too close to Jody Shelly and 2) are bush league numbers for the Phantom call up of the week. They way Bourdon in particular has been playing I think he needs to be part of the team full time. Tough break for Gus but I am not ready to take out Bourdon. Marshall wore 4 and Bourdon wore 3 in the AHL.
Also cue the Matt Carle is expendable conversation. Because that is going to the be the major argument of the 2012.

41 is a little weird but at least is a reverse of a common number like 14. The double number is a common and there are tons of 44’s in the league. But 43 and 46 are and not worn pretty much by anybody they are not their minor league numbers.
However I look up Marshall and he did wear 46 in juniors so I am going to that take that one back. However Bourdon always wore #3 I guess Bartulis still has that number locked up for now.

Hey, why not numbers like 88? Or 99?

There’s a very good series of books called Roadside Geology, mostly by state. Everything in the mid-Atlantic and New England is in there except New Jersey and Delaware (which would be very thin). We made a big loop from SLC down to Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, Arches, and back to SLC. We didn’t spend any time in the city though.
Capitol Reef might have a very slight edge because, in addition to awesome rock formations and a big fruit orchard that you’d never expect to find in the desert, there were so few people there. It felt like we were in on some secret. It was just neat to sit at the top of Navajo Knobs for such a long time and hear nothing but the wind.

I agree. I think that collectively they are the U.S.’s most spectacular landscape, with an incredible drive connecting all of them. I went through the western half last spring. zone starts? really? who gives a $#*!
I just don’t understand why there’s a need to continually say the wild are not a good hockey team. Just because they don’t fit perfectly into the typical stat mold that a good team does means everyone should think they suck? They hired the right coach, made the right off season moves and are getting the job done because of it. I’m getting sick of seeing people talk about them not being a good team when its obvious they are. Maybe they aren’t doing it the typical way but give the coach and the team some credit because they are finding ways to win hockey games and that’s the only thing that matters.

Let’s see: 1) they are playing in their own zone more than any other team, 2) allowing more shots than every team but two, 3) getting less shots than every team but one, 4) 4-1 in shootouts, 5) winning an unsustainable amount of one-goal games, and 6) getting only slightly worse goaltending from all of their goalies than Tim Thomas gave Boston when setting the SV% record last year.
I love the Twin Cities, I love those fans, and I love that hockey culture, so I hope they make the playoffs, but they don’t have a very good hockey team.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
If I get bored enough this Christmas break, I’m going to do scoring chances for some of their games. The mastheads at Hockey Wilderness don’t believe the project is important, nor that they need some random fan tracking them because their coach, themselves and writers for the team all see that the Wild can keep shots against to the outside while playing a system that generates shots from the slot.

All of this makes sense if you think wins are the best indicator of team strength.
The statistical community has repeatedly observed that you will have more success predicting how many games a team will win in the future by looking at their current Corsi tied than by looking at their current win/loss record. Therefore, the statistical community tends to use those metrics to assess which teams are good.
In other words, it is not at all obvious that they are a good team. Bad teams sometimes win games too, and while 30 games is a long time for a team this bad to achieve results this good, history still suggests that they are actually not a very good team.
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
I see it more as a warning that, while they may be winning games now, it might be hard for them to keep it up long-term with the way they’re playing. But who knows, we’ll see what happens. Maybe they’ll surprise us all.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
"I think there is virtue in pissing off idiots." - Fehr and Balanced
Then say that, don’t say they aren’t a good team. Its ridiculous to think they are bad and can somehow have one of the best records in hockey. Good hockey teams find ways to win and they’ve consistantly done that this year. Is it sustainable? Possibly not. But I remember people saying they can’t keep this up about a month ago and here we are nearing the half way point and they still are. If there’s a need to talk about “bad” hockey teams there are far worse than the wild. I suppose they are just getting the brunt of it because they are finding atypical ways to win and lead their division and conference. Talk about the Kings sucking, that makes me feel better haha.

Then you are reacting to what Geoff wrote, not the article, that’s fine. I figured to react so much you would be reacting to substance rather than what Geoff just threw up in a rush. But it makes sense that you are just sick of hearing that type of phrase referring to the Wild.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
For instance, from the article:
This is yet another way to show that the Minnesota Wild are struggling when it comes to puck possession: their OZone% is worst in the NHL by over 4%. Even more stark is that they are the only team in the league who have started more shifts at 5-on-5 in the defensive zone than in the neutral zone. To their credit, they win 52.9% of their defensive zone faceoffs, but unless they are able to start shifting possession into the offensive zone more regularly, their league-high defensive zone starts will come back to bite them.
It doesn’t really say they are bad, it just says that the data suggests that eventually this type of play will catch up to them. But the title isn’t really very nice, I agree, but also, you can’t make the judgment ont he entire article just based on the headline.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
True. But I honestly wasn’t reacting to the article. Pretty much just to what Geoff said haha. He is by far not the only one though. But I assumed with his description that there probably wasn’t anything good to say about the wild.

Yeah, I totally get it I just misunderstood where you were coming from. I know I get frustrated when I hear the same thing over and over again. FWIW, the stats articles mostly approach it from a it will be hard to sustain that type of record when looking at ____ (fill in the blank)
That article was just looking at zone starts and faceoffs as a new way, or additional way, to analyze team success; however the URL and Title were definitely bashing the Wild, which is where Geoff got his bullet point from.

Flyers West
LOL at the John Stevens quotes in Quisp’s article. If Sutter wasn’t being courted to coach LAK, I’d say that instead of them being Flyers-West, they were trying to become the Flyers “AAAA” team (to use a MLB term; hello Houston Astros, but without the prospect losses).
It was also weird that they did not understand that this is Stevens normal MO.
Too bad for Lombardi that the Blues snapped up Hitchcock. That would have been hilarious to watch.

In 2015, which one of the following will prove to be a better investment?
(a) Ilya Bryzgalov's contract (b) Ryan Howard's extension (c) Mike Vick's extension (d) Greek bonds from 2009 (e) Papelbon's bloat deal
Apocalypse Averted
Shelley played well last night (my fingers did NOT want to type that phrase). But given the crisis in the Euro, high unemployment, middle East tensions and increasing obesity in the Southern states, I am very glad that the goal was credited to MAB rather than him.

I don’t know how long you’ve had it but i definitely just LOL’d at your signature.

Great article by Seravelli on Pronger hit
I’m posting too much now, but I just read this story, and kudos to Frank on some good primary research.

For one, Pronger is not Scott Hartnell. He does not fall down often
Well said, Frank.
Great read.

It not only seemed somewhat innocuous but the camera cut away quickly. Amazing you noticed.

I was at the game and noticed the hit immediately as it wasn’t far from me.
FWIW I thought Pronger flopped trying to draw a call, especially because afterward he skated over to the Ref and chirped at him while the play was still going on.
Here you can see where I call Pronger out for flopping because at the time there was no mention of injury.

While watching the game last night, my wife and I were talking about the Caps’ coaching change and that it didn’t seem to be working yet, then the Flyers’ coaching moves over the past few years came up and how long it took for them to have impact on the team’s performance, and she commented that there seem to be more coaching changes in the NHL than other sports. That we seem to easily blame problems on the coach. It’s an interesting comment, and I couldn’t come up with anything to say one way or the other. What do you guys think? Do hockey teams fire coaches more often than other sports?

Its easier to blame the coach and change him then get a new roster because of the cap rules :)

This....
26 out of 32 teams in the NFL, 26 out of 30 in the NBA, 27 out of 30 in MLB, and 26 out of 30 in the NHL have had new coaches/managers hired in the last 5 years. If we shrink that to the last 2 years, the NBA has the highest percentage of coach turnover, with over half of their teams, 16 out of 30, hiring new coaches. Baseball is next, with nearly half, 14 out of 30, with the NHL close behind at 13 of their 30 teams hiring new coaches. The NFL has the lowest percentage, but 11 of their 32 teams have still hired new coaches in the last two years.
from this blog post
The rest of the post focuses on coaches with longest tenure and there is no data like that above for longer than the last two and five years….

You know the phrase “You can’t fire the players, so you fire the coach.” It would be interesting to track roster turnover in between coaching changes to determine what percentage of a team actually was “fired” before a coach is kicked out.
The Flyers may not be a good example because of all the roster moves this summer, but if you look at the opening lineup for Laviolette’s first game there are eight players still on the team, so a 60% turnover in just over two years. I didn’t check healthy scratches or LTIR but looking at this year’s roster I don’t think I missed anyone. Bartulis played as did Jon Kalinski and they are both still in the organization so that would be 10.

not sure if it's been posted yet but:
This is another amusing holiday video by the Sharks.
I wish the Flyers would do things like this, I think it’s hilarious

If throwing items onto the ice during play os a penalty...
Shouldn’t the home team be penalized every hat trick?

Someone tell me that BSH’s #Hartnelldown shirt is better than the official #Hartnelldown shirt…even if you don’t believe it. I need a win.

Samsies, you shouldn’t have to do a mental exercise to figure out what a shirt means.
Too much clutter on the other one, it is a funny concept but probably not great for a shirt.
Now an actual season long counter on a website…. would be fucking hilarious.

Wait, I think that site is a season-long counter. I don’t think the counter is on the shirt. Maybe the shirt is just hartnelldown on the front (with the fallen over letters) and the “down & dirty 19” logo on the back. That isn’t immediately clear from the website. Either way, I like Kreider’s shirt better.

I honestly hate the other shirt. Like it isn’t good at all.
Yours I am considering getting a friend for Christmas. Speaking of, can we bypass shipping and get one printed for Saturday? Haha.

Nope. Sorry. I would if I could. Deadline for x-mas shipping was midnight last night.
