It’s been real, y’all.

How dare anyone question the shootout selections when 2 players scored and the 3rd hit the post. The question should be why wasn’t Bernie Parent used as the goalie in the shootout.

Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011

Because Bernie thinks shootouts are stupid and would have refused to participate in such a mockery of the game as a matter of principle? (I can hope?)

Not that I’m a huge supporter of the shootout but I really fricken hated ties. Like utterly hated them, watching a whole hockey game end in a tie was quite depressing. And when I read things like this—Philadelphia took both meetings against Dallas last season to extend its winning streak in the series to five. The Flyers were 1-5-0 with eight ties in the previous 14 matchups—it really makes me thankful there aren’t ties anymore.

I think there are a few different things they could do to reduce the amount of shootouts. I am all for a 10 minute OT with 5mins of 4-4 and 5mins of 3-3.

Hmm, I guess I don’t really remember how I felt about sitting through a game that ended in a tie. I’ve been to boring games, but boring games aren’t always tied and tied games aren’t always boring. It could still be really exciting, yet evenly matched. I guess I’m ambivalent on ties, so I’m fine if a new system doesn’t include that. But I despise the shootout.

by hintzy64 on Dec 21, 2011 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

I wasn’t so much talking about having to sit through a tie. I didn’t mean it like that. I was more talking about the bitter taste after the game ended in a tie. I guess you kind of have a point in that the actual game is really unchanged whether there’s a tie or shootout. But I think the main thing is people want to see someone win. When you spend 2+ hours watching a full hockey game and no one wins its like ahhhh wtf!?
And when you add in the fact that the league is trying to grow the game and make it appealing to people outside the hockey realm, the tie absolutely had to go.
Did you see the 3 on 3 in ot the other night? Its crazy haha and I can about guarantee it would reduce the shootouts by a huge margin. Its like a powerplay if/when you get the puck, very exciting to watch.

by kckrebs on Dec 21, 2011 4:27 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Oh, I see. Yeah, I can see where having a winner at the end is the more appealing outcome. I didn’t see the 3v3, but I can imagine it’d be crazy.

Did you ever hear the OT concept my wife and I came up with? It’s loosely based on what college football does with alternating drives until one team scores and the other doesn’t. Our idea was to alternate power plays until one team scores and the other doesn’t. Play for two minutes or until you score, then it’s the other team’s turn. Scoring while shorthanded is an automatic win. You could do 5v4, 5v3, 4v3, whatever you think would have the best chance of scoring goals. But with current power play efficiencies ranging from 11% to 26% across the league, the odds might still be too low.

I wonder if the ratings will be better tonight for 24/7 since people have had time to watch the premiere in various ways. Also, I think that HBO ratings should be taken with a grain of salt since it’s extra money for that cable package. I love HBO documentaries, but maybe they should partner up with Versus or NBC for 24/7 so that they can reach a broader audience.

I think paying the $5 or whatever it is extra a month has never been more worth it.

With HBO GO you can watch every single series, miniseries etc they’ve produced at any time. It’s amazing.

Are the episodes coming out on iTunes each week, does anyone know?

I do agree that the ratings are sort of silly.

In general, the ratings system needs to be reworked, with so many different viewing methods available online.

If you say “hey, can I get those six free months back?” they’ll say no.

But often if you say you’re calling to cancel because some other provider offered you some attractive introductory package, they’ll either match it or offer to repeat their introductory package. So call and say you’re switching to DirecTV because they offered a year of free movie channels and see what happens.

Happy Winter Solstice to any of you Moon Worshippers. And to Sun Worshippers: look on the sunny side — the days just get longer and longer now.

FTFY.

Thank you, Dr. Eric T.

I know pagans tend to worship the sun and the moon, but you only really hear about the Sun Worshippers as a cult.

As they’re both relevant to the solstice..
Also, I was giving a nod to Carlin.

Moon is much more important than the Sun. Sun is out during the day when it is already bright.

What are the injury status’s of Gustaphson and Lilja? When are there expected returns?

by NickFotiu4HOF on Dec 21, 2011 11:45 AM EST reply actions

Gustaphson has malignalitaloptereosis. He won’t be able to play until the violent sneezing subsides.

Lilja has dermatemeculitis. He is undergoing the standard lizard urine therapy and should be ready in ~3-5 days.

/Yes, I’ve been reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_diseases today.

Didn’t you already do that last week, Ben? Or maybe Travis/Geoff/Ben/et al did it…

I’m confused by the episode number and the expected post time. But I am easily confused.

Travis did one for SB Nation Hockey, Geoff did one for SBN Philly, but I do not recall anyone doing anything exclusive to this site, and I do not remember reading anything from Ben on it.

I’m off from work through the 2nd.

As for school, my break has started already, and it is infinite. Commencement is tonight. I keep obsessively checking the websites for my class and the registrar’s office looking for my grades and to see the words “Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering, Awarded 12/21/11” appended to the end of my transcript. My professor has all the grading done and I know that I got 948 out of 1000 points in the class, but it isn’t up on my official records yet.

I even went to “diploma mailing status” where it clearly told me in big red letters that student records won’t be updated until January 13th and diplomas will be mailed by March. So I know I have a long time to wait, but I can’t stop checking.
