Leino deserves a suspension for that elbow to Read’s head. I have gone from really liking Leino, to accepting that he’s not that good, to laughing at Buffalo, to laughing at Buffalo, to not really liking Leino.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.
One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

Even the crazy stickhandling plays that used to amaze me when Leino wore orange and black now simply reassure me that letting him walk was the right thing to do – dude is a one-dimensional puck hog. A very good one-dimensional puck hog, but just that. I’ll take Jake any day over him (which is probably the way that deal was envisioned in the first place – Voracek replaces Leino in the lineup).

A couple of serious questions
Is there a threshold for us where we cross over from saying ’we’re a decent team that got a good start to the season’ to ’we’re a good team’?
And similarly is there a threshold where we go from ’Giroux’s performance is unsustainable’ to ’it’s been x number of games this season, and it looks like he’s sustaining it’?
With the second question we often think about a guy’s shooting % and the shooting % of others while he’s on the ice. Giroux’s at an unsustainable 20% shooting % (approximately)…but that just went up even further last night. Similarly, Giroux’s on ice percentage is something around 11% I think (haven’t checked the numbers), which is unsustainable, but that also went up last night (considering he was on ice for 4 goals and the entire team took 34 shots, I think it’s fair to assume the shooting % while Giroux was on the ice was probably around the 20% mark).

Outlier seasons are always possible, and it’s not unheard of to end the season at 20%. Vanek was at 19% with over 210 shots, Boyes was at 20.8% with over 200 shots, and Selanne almost hit 19% with over 250 shots, so this stuff can happen for a season. For a career not so much. Giroux is on pace for 246 shots, and could very well end up with a ridiculous shooting %. That’s who he could be for this year, outliers happen; now to say that’s who he is for his career, that’s stretching it.
Exactly. I think one likely would see such high percentages from most of the top scorers in the game if you removed the data from that player’s first and last 100 games in their career.
Now I’m wondering what player recorded the highest shooting% ever in a season, what year, and whereabouts in the course of his career did it occur?
he only got 1 goal though lastnight, it’s his tape to tape through impossible lanes passes that give him the edge. sure he’s got a great shot but his passes are ridiculous.
This literally has nothing to do with the part of the question I’m addressing.
I think we all agree that Giroux is talented. The question of Giroux’s performance being sustainable is getting at his production; goals and assists. PoL separated it out to Individual Shooting % which is getting at his goals and Team on Ice shooting % which is getting at his assists and points; I addressed the Individual Shooting % portion.
Also, FWIW, Giroux had 3 shots last night, scoring once, improving on his 20% shooting %, so that lonesome goal still improve his shooting %.
Is there a threshold for us where we cross over from saying ’we’re a decent team that got a good start to the season’ to ’we’re a good team’
Silly man – we’re Philly fans. They always either suck, or are the preordained champions, or both simultaneously. This middling ‘decent’ adjective is so … objective and unemotional.

My its because im a Flyers fan, but I have seen worse boardings this year they havnt been near a suspension at all (Like Charas hit on Giroux)
Shanahan seems to take it into consideration if there was an injury on the play. I gather the guy is concussed. That will probably be enough for a minor suspension. I don’t think it will be too bad, though. I’ve seen worse hits. But it will make things awkward with Pronger and Lilja gone too.
Side note, Instigator rule remains a steaming pile. To think the Flyers got away from that without a powerplay against.
Posting all the way from sunny Manchester, England.
If Bourdon gets suspended (well, when), it may not be for long. I think he’ll come clean and admit it was a stupid play he wishes he could take back. It would be his first suspension. I don’t think he meant to do it, but he has to take responsibility for it. Expect two games off. Then what do you do about the defense? Maybe a call to the Latvian sea wolf?
Lifelong Tennessean, Flyers' fan for life
You could see on the replay after the hit he looked up like “What the fuck did I do? That was dumb.”
I think both he and Leino should get two games. I don’t think there was intent to injure on either play but they should each be suspended to curtail that behavior.

I don’t know, that was a pretty standard boarding penalty. If it’s suspendable it pretty much says that boarding is no longer a minor penalty. I guess that’s pretty much the case though.

I kinda felt that way about it too, but I was watching it on a crappy stream so maybe I didn’t see everything. I wouldn’t say exactly that he turned at the last second, but he did turn into the boards a second or two before the hit.

Not at the last second, no. I felt like he gave Bourdon a chance to change course.

Did anyone ask Bourdon what went through his head right after the hit? I’d be curious to know what he thought.
by hebrew hammer on Dec 8, 2011 9:26 AM EST up reply actions
IMO Bourdon rode Gerbe in the boards as opposed to the shoving him from behind. Gerbe made contact with the glass not the dasher as a result. A pretty standard boarding call. Making flush contact is a lot or acceptable then going head first.
On side note Bourdon and D as a whole looked pretty good in the 2nd and 3rd period lots of clean outs with good outlet passes. The forwards have to stop watching and pick up a man on the backcheck and Brzy needs recover from giving a goal a not become momentarily lost in the woods.

Yeah, I saw that too, so I’m not sure how I feel about this situation. He clearly looked back and saw Bourdon coming, and then turns himself face-first into the boards to take the hit. Boarding penalty? Sure. Suspension? I dunno. I guess we’ll see.

He drilled a guy from behind and right into the boards, so he’ll get something for it. Perhaps just a fine to get him on the record as an offender, but I’d imagine it’s a game or two.
Gerbe turned, but he turned to play the puck where it was headed. He didn’t have control of the puck and turn his back to a guy already committed to the hit, or to prevent someone from making a play on him.
As for the instigator, it comes with an automatic 10, which is a pretty tough penalty; after a penalized hit, I don’t think the refs like to dole it out.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I thought the puck was already gone when he turned into the boards, but I may just remember it wrong. I mean, I think Bourdon should have let up a bit or avoided he hit, but I’m just saying Gerbe didn’t do himself any favors turning like that.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
"I think there is virtue in pissing off idiots." - Fehr and Balanced
Gerbe was already facing the boards and then looked back at Bourdon then got the puck while still facing the boards so really its just a mometary lapse in judgement by Bourdon. He’ll likely the standard 2 games for it tho.
by youtastelikeaburger on Dec 8, 2011 1:18 PM EST up reply actions
See I thought Gerbe was kind of facing diagonal to the boards at first, he could have turned either way, but after he saw Bourdon is when he turned face-first to the boards. As I said, I could be remembering it wrong.

"I think there is virtue in pissing off idiots." - Fehr and Balanced
That’s how I remember it too, meaning that Bourdon could come in and give him a shoulder to shoulder check, but Bourdon still could have slowed a bit as Gerbe turned, I think.

Agreed.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
"I think there is virtue in pissing off idiots." - Fehr and Balanced
I guess you could maybe say that was possible. But I think Gerbe was moving in a way to play the puck, not shield himself from a hit. The replay really doesn’t help out Bourdons case either.
by youtastelikeaburger on Dec 8, 2011 1:30 PM EST up reply actions
After watching it again, Gerbe is perpendicular to the boards, in the lead up. I think as Gerbe plays the puck through, he turns into the boards squarely, as a result of playing the puck, and that a split second later Bourdon hits him. Where there is some room for interpretation is that Bourdon is coming from behind him the whole way. If Gerbe stays still and lets the puck go through, then he gets checked from behind onto the ice, or at a diagonal and into the boards sideways, but because he spins a bit to play the puck he ends up with a shoulder in the back. I’m very curious to see what happens with this.
by hebrew hammer on Dec 8, 2011 1:39 PM EST up reply actions
Exactly. It all depends on interpretation of the “whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the check” part of the rule. That’s why it’s such an interesting hit.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
"I think there is virtue in pissing off idiots." - Fehr and Balanced
However, the elbow to Read’s head can’t be viewed as anything other than that. He actually lifted his elbow to get him rather than tucking it in to use his shoulder for the check.
I’ll be amazed if he gets suspended, though. They’ll give Bourdon 2 games and Ville’s hit won’t even be reviewed because Read kept playing rather than doing an academy award winning performance to make sure the refs saw it.
Or Leino has a hearing scheduled and Bourdon doesn’t…

Be on the look out for a 5 ft 10 in 170 pound man who goes by the name of Daniel “Danny” Brière. He was last seen in Boston on May 6th, 2011. He is a professional hockey player currently on the Philadelphia Flyers roster but has not been seen in months. His children, teammates and fans are very concerned for his welfare. Any information on his whereabouts please contact Peter Laviolette Head Coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. Peter is desperate for another top center on the team in order to grind Claude Giroux through the ice by February.

Briere had 68 points in 77 games last year. This year he is on a pace to get 64 points in 77 games. I’m pretty sure this is without the benefit of having two steady linemates like he did most of last year. I’m not saying he’s playing great, but somebody wearing #48 is picking up these points if it’s not Briere.
Also, if Briere isn’t playing at the top of his game that doesn’t mean Laviolette has to play Giroux 22 minutes a game. #14 is available for more quality minutes. Briere isn’t responsible for Laviolette’s player management, and he’s fourth on the team in scoring. Not an invisible man.

Jody Shelly and Derek Boogaard......
After reading the 3 part series and watching the 3 part video’s on Derek Boogaard, I would like to offer my apologies for anything I might have said in the past against Jody Shelly and any other enforcer in hockey.
If he has even gone through half of what Derek has I believe he deserves my admiration and respect.
Enforcers are by far the grunt’s of the hockey world and respectfully I tip my hat and pound my stick on the boards for all of them.
My teams are the Flyers, Phillies and the Steelers. Deal with it.
Even if you are not a fan of fighting in the sport you have acknowledge it’s place in the game and guys who take on the jobs to be fighters.

I still don’t think enforcers are necessary. I’m not saying take fighting out, I’m saying take out encouraging the careers of players who are only there to punch and be punched, as Derek was groomed to be.
Yea, this is where I’ve gotten to as well. I don’t think you can completely eliminate fights like the one Bourdon was in last night, but there is no need for a dedicated enforcer.
by hebrew hammer on Dec 8, 2011 9:48 AM EST up reply actions
The game is definitely passing by the enforcers. There is still a mentality in the league for enforcers, but it is starting to dwindle especially with the cap. This is all intelligent conversation and debating points. I think I just get my back up when people disrespect these guys, hold them to expectations they are not capable of and not expected to accomplish and downplay the effect enforcers have on teams. I would believe to a man players like having a heavyweight on their team. I mean look at the Sabres last night, they called up three monsters, one is a legitimate future player and the other two were there so the big bad Flyers didn’t push them around.

DISCLAIMER: Information written above may not be entirely factual nor provable with the use of complex statistics. But it may induce thought, humor and possibly laughter.
I don’t mind criticism about not dressing an enforcer, or complaining about his contract because that’s criticism that can be applied to anyone for the most part. The stupid shots people take are just that, stupid, so I ignore them. Those people typically make stupid comments about every other player as well, so again, it’s not like it’s just about an enforcer, just about a lack of intelligence from the poster.
The two big Dmen I don’t see as being out there just to be out there for protection, I think they both can be players at some point. And Kassian can be if he is the other one you are referring to there. I need to pull up the ice time chart and check to see how they were used.

does this indicate:

2. playing on briere’s line begins with a -30 handicap?
3. scott has knows how to swiftly skate to the bench once play heads out of the offensive zone?

It’s a bit of a double edge sword. That was their line of thinking with JVR and everyone wasn’t thrilled with that. You take a gamble either way because you could be locking them up cheap, or you could be over paying them by jumping the gun and giving them a contract and them not living up to it. I suppose it all boils down to which risk you are willing to take. Would you rather get stuck paying somebody who doesn’t live up to expectations, or get stuck giving them a bigger pay day or even losing them to free agency later on?
Personally, I can’t decide which method I prefer. Both have pro’s & con’s.
Man, we shoulda given that JVR contract to Giroux and given the Giroux contract to JVR.
