And it’s truly sad he didn’t get to raise the Cup in a Flyers jersey. I’m still dazzled over what the Red Wings did to them in the Finals.

My one regret as a Flyers fan is that he never raised the cup with the Flyers. He was a class act and a great player.

I'm kind of a dick.
I remember the city wide hysteria of the back to back Cup years (must be getting old) but I truly regret not being able to see Brind’Amour lift the Cup in our colors.

I just want to say what a class move I think this is by the Carolina Ownership. Waiting for the Flyers to come to town to celebrate the great Brind’amour is so respectful to both the player and our Flyers.
After saying that I hope to see Coburn lay Skinner out a few more times.

Where do you work that you can wear shorts and a Flyers t-shirt to work? I am quite jealous. It was “Spirit Week” at the school I teach at and I was excited to drop the tie and wear jeans!

Does anyone else think having the Flyers all wear Brind’Amour’s jersey number during pre-game warm ups is a bit much? Seriously, we all loved him when he was here and continue to respect him, but c’mon. A ceremonial puck drop with our captain, some polite applause, and perhaps a commemorative plaque, signed picture, or something of the like would suffice, IMO.
I like to think of it as a show of respect when we’re in their house. Brind’Amour was important in Philly, and so instrumental in Carolina that they’re raising his number to the rafters. I agree it might be more than is necessary, but I think it’s a really nice gesture by the Flyers.

I loved Brind’Amour and even have his jersey, but I do think it’s a little weird

I am not sure why some Flyer fans have negative feelings about Brind’Amour, but I always thought he was a valuable member of the organization. He played any position, could be used in any situation and seemed to relish staying out of the spotlight that was mostly occupied by stars like LeClair and Lindros. I hated to see him get traded, but appreciate that he got his name on the Cup and served as his team’s captain. I love the #17 jersey warmup idea, but I have all kinds of respect for Brind’Amour, too.
Lifelong Tennessean, Flyers' fan for life
Who the hell mentioned negative feelings? My comment said that we all love(d) the guy. I just questioned why our team has to genuflect at the alter of Rod by having our players wear his number on away ice during the pre-game. There’s plenty of ways to show respect. This is too much.
by Boundforbeach on Feb 18, 2011 12:23 PM EST up reply actions
I wasn’t commenting on you, specifically — occassionally, I have come across comments that Rod wasn’t dedicated to the organization and that he kind of forced his own way out of town. I don’t know the story behind that, and I’d just rather assume he always wanted to remain a Flyer.
Lifelong Tennessean, Flyers' fan for life
Supposedly they’re also each wearing one of his old cups (not Stanley) during warmups. That seems a little stranger than the jersey.

Everybody knows MS would crash out during the upload time.

Meh, I work in the tech industry. Hate MS with a passion. And Dell.
Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.
I have no issues with any one computing system over another.
I use Windows because I’m used to it. I love Windows 7, though. Never had a problem with it, and I’ve been using it since it’s been released – both the 64-bit and 32-bit versions.
My only issue with Macs is that they’re so expensive, and there’s this lingering idea that “if you’re a creative person, you have to use a Mac.” BS, I say. As long as you have the proper hardware and software, you can do anything you want in any OS. It’s the same with the whole tired accusation that “Windows crashes all of the time.” Like I said, I’ve been using Win7 since October of 2009 on two machines, and I’ve had one crash.
I want to start poking around with Ubuntu one of these days, just to get more familiar with Linux.

I don’t have a Mac and never did. I’ve always used PCs.
Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.
I haven’t used Mac in a long, long time, something like 15 years. At the time, it had less little crashes than Windows, so people touted it as more stable, but when it did crash (which I had a knack for doing, apparently), it crashed HARD and everything was lost.
Also, when I was in high school, my dad and I got into buying components and building our own PCs. I’ve been doing that ever since, which kind of means I have to use Windows or Linux. AFAIK, you can’t get Mac OS for a homebuilt system.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
I understand that.
I’ve never touched Windows 7, but I hate Windows. I won’t say it’s terrible, but after 12+ years of dealing with Windows, I’m so glad I got rid of that shit.

I used to joke (with a loose definition of joke) that I’ve used everything under the sun, including Sun (…and SGI…and all varieties of Linux…and *BSD…you get the idea, hah).
Lots of people hate Windows, and with good reason. But since Windows 7 came out, it’s pretty much right up there with anything Apple’s made. Fact of the matter is, Microsoft has done a lot more to improve Windows in the past three or four years than Apple has OS X. And this is coming from someone who’s main computer is a MacBook Pro (though I’m typing this on a ThinkPad running Vista, hah).
I been using a Mac for the last few days and the frigging touch pad is driving me insane. I keep accidentily enlarging shit, then shrinking it. And right clicking. I miss it. How is Windows 7? I ‘m still running XP pro in my other machine which isn’t working that well. I got a RAM upgrade and since I have to wipe the hard drive anyway I thought of installing Windows 7 instead of XP. Do you think ithat 7 is that much better than XP?
I hated Vista so much I went back and reinstalled XP, which works well for me. I’m afraid to touch 7.

I never “upgraded” to Vista because I heard it sucked hardcore. Still using XP, actually.

I guess my concern is when will MS stop writing updates for it. I never understood why they had to change it anyway. People were giving MS shit about not developing a new OS – there’s plenty to criticize about MS but that? I ‘m sure businesses just love having to change OSes and then deal with retraining everyone but in particular all the people who weren’t than computer literate to begin and will fuck up their computers evey other day just like they did the for the 3 yrs. it took them to learn XP.
XP is getting pretty old and I get the feeling it has about reached the limit of what it can do. Also, a fresh install of XP (released in 2001) now has to go through 10 years worth of updates to be a modern system. So Microsoft is understandably ready to end support for that and move on to something new. Of course, they have to produce something new that everyone will be willing to switch to. Vista failed miserably at that. 7 might have a chance. To my knowledge, the government (DoD at least) still uses XP everywhere. I don’t know if 7 is allowed yet, for security purposes. The US government is too huge of a customer for Microsoft, so I think they can’t completely drop XP until they get the government to change over to 7.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
You’ll get used to the touch pad. That was the biggest learning curve for me when I switched to a Mac.
Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!
Is this the right room for an argument?
I’m kinda of borrowing it. But I kinda have access to it anytime I want. So once I get my PC up and running I’ll uses it less but I’m gonna start using the Mac for graphics and music applications which Mac I hear is better equipped to handle . So I still have to learn it . The touchpad – it seems like it can do too much stuff. The one nice thing I find with the Mac is when the it slows down I don’t have be ready to pull the plug because I think I’ve been hijacked by a trojan or malware….malware, there’s a special level of hell for the assholes who write that shit.
From what I understand Windows 7 is an adjusted copy of OSX?

I don’t think that’s accurate but it seems pretty clear that the basic premise of Windows 7 is borrowed from OSX.

… And OSX has been shunned by hard-core Mac users because of its similarity to Windows.
The two systems are becoming more similar, and will continue to move in this direction thanks to the Intel Macs.
Also thanks to the fact that Bill Gates saved them from obsolescence in the early 1990s.

I don’t really like Macs, either—I am an open architecture proponent and wish MS didn’t force you to buy their stuff with a PC. Most of our issues come from servicing our clients, though, and they don’t necessarily have Win 7 or anything current.
Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.
You used to be able to buy select Dell systems with FreeDOS, Ubuntu, or no OS installed, and save ~$100 on the licensing cost of Windows. Never did it, not sure if you can still do it, but the option was there for a while, in the desktop realm anyway. (Servers are a completely different story, of course)
I only buy macs, because they are the most reliable and they have amazing costumer support, but If i didn’t own a mac, I would make my own computer with Linux.
Samesis
Hell, I used Windows ME from 2001 through 2007, on a computer that was moved at least twice a year 80 miles each way, and until 2006 it was stable. I had a couple virus issues because I was a computer idiot when I first got it, but once my techie friends taught me a few tricks, that thing went five years only crashing twice, and both times it was when I tried to restart it after a power outage without letting it scan first.
After five years, it BSOD’d fairly regularly, but by then it was ancient and needed to be replaced anyway.
Bob.
Wait, you used ME? I thought that was a bigger fail than Vista?

Yeah, but at the time the choices were Windows 2000 or ME. I know ME is reportedly the worst one ever, but it was oddly stable for me.
Bob.
If you want to play with Linux, the quick-and-easy way to do it is with VirtualBox or VMware Player. Install either on top of Windows, and you can install Linux on top, and run both at the same time. Both are free, and are great ways to test things out without risking f’ing up your main computer…
Great suggestion, sorry I missed out on this conversation or I would have said the same thing! Some linux distros (like Mandriva) also offer “Live CDs” which let you boot the OS from a CD and try it without installing anything at all. However, since this is running from a CD, it is a bit slower than running in VirtualBox, which is in turn slower than running a full install on real hardware.
I’ve been using Mandrake/Mandriva Linux at home since ~2003 and Ubuntu at work since ~2008 and enjoy them both. Ubuntu is absolutely fantastic for people who are new to linux, it’s very user-friendly and most things “just work.” Mandriva has a little more power and flexibility, but requires a little more of a learning curve to get familiar with doing things at the command line. (Worth it, IMHO) One of my favorite things about either one is that after the initial installation, you can install (almost) anything without ever touching a CD/DVD, all of the software is in repositories online. This means (once you’re familiar with the process) you can have a fully functioning system with everything you want installed within a few hours, as opposed to the several-day process of installing things on a fresh Windows install.
I still keep Windows around too, mostly for playing games that won’t work under linux. My hard drive is just split in half, each OS has it’s own partition. I also installed Win7 about a month ago to give it a shot. (Hooray for triple-booting!) Aside from a series of blue-screens that appear to have been caused by a bad driver (not sure yet), I’ve been pretty impressed with it. It’s a huge improvement over XP. So I’ll give you that. But I still prefer linux. ;-)
If anyone is ever interested in trying any of this out and has questions, hit me up. :-)

Armageddon is completely and utterly horrible. Independence Day is at least watchable even if, as others have said, it’s not aged well.
I love the SNL skit where Will Ferrell played James Lipton and he kept asking Billy Bob Thornton (referring to him as “Willy Rob”) about his work in the celebrated film, Aaaaah-ma-GEDDON.

Indepedence Day was dreadful. Well actually it was so bad it was hilarous. So I kinda enjoyed it more than Armageddon. Indepedence Day as an action sci-fi iflick : turrible. As a comedy: accidentally brillant.
Armaggedon had one more thing going for it than Depends Day did – Liv Tyler.
Bill Pullman was awesome like he knew the movie was crap and was totally playing it up.
After the First Lady buys it
Patricia Whitmore: Is Mommy sleeping now?
President Thomas Whitmore: Yeah, Mommy is sleeping now.
The way Pullman delivered that line…Me and my friend couldn’t stop laughing . We almost got kicked out of the theater.
Oh yeah what about the DIE, DIE scence. MST3K gold.
Okay the one cool thing in that movie was when the alien ships started blowing up buildings.
...
Best part about the “Die, Die” scene? The double tap at the end!

Not sure what to think about the Bruins trading for Kaberle. He’d obviously good pick up for them but should defense really be what they should improve? Isn’t their big problem scoring? I don’t know that is why I ask. Does Boston become a better team than Pittsburgh and maybe Tampa if they get Kaberle?
Formerly known as "flyrsfrk05"
@Mitchman88 on Twitter
Yeah, I’m not sure what to think of it — should it happen, of course. Looking at the numbers, their powerplay is middle-of-the-pack (14th), as is their PK (14th), though they give up the fourth most shots per game across the league, which kind of surprises me. They’re #5 in goals scored per game (3.10), which I also had no idea of, so I guess scoring depth isn’t a necessity. I guess from that perspective it makes sense, but I would think acquiring Kaberle wouldn’t be cheap (and Bob McKenzie says that in order for them to acquire him, they would need to make an additional move or two), and I’m sure there are other guys available who could have a similar impact with less effect on the current roster, so…
Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog
They really need another defenseman though. If it means taking McQuaid off their team, they should/will do it.
If it means sending Seguin back to Juniors, they shouldn’t.

Wow, I didn’t realize that either. Hmmm, well I guess my perception of the this year’s Bruins team is a bit out dated.
So, minus the high price that Kaberle will cost Boston, for them, bringing him in would be a very good idea. Seems like he is having a decent season so far with 3 goals, 35 assists and is a minus-2 (…but I don’t know what his advanced stats are like) so adding Kaberle would probably considerably boost the Bruins. Honestly, I would be more afraid of them than I would be of Tampa if they were able to pluck Kaberle come playoff time.

Not sure if this was covered yesterday or not, but an article about the Flyers from Truehockey.com….
http://www.truehockey.com/articles/The-Ultimate-Team-Player
One paragraph that sticks out:
Speaking of Leino by the way, there’s been a lot of talk regarding a contract extension. Both sides have been talking and were gaining some traction. Recently Holmgren approached Leino and gave him an option. Sources say he told Leino we can get the deal done now or add Versteeg and wait until after the season. Leino responded quickly "I want to win a Cup".
Not sure how true this is, but interesting nonetheless….
I'm kind of a dick.
I pray this is true. If so, it is the best news!

Have faith and don’t panic. Name one player who ever left this organization as a free agent that the organization wanted to keep in the fold. The only name I can come up with is Brad McCrimmon and that was back in 1987.
If I remember right, that was more on the Flyers than Knuble. We basically told him we can’t bring him back.
The Flyers are the deepest team in the NHL, the Phillies have four aces. Man is it great to be a Philly sports fan right now.
Basically they said “we know you’ll say no to this contract but we need to save face by at least offering you SOMETHING”
The Flyers are the deepest team in the NHL, the Phillies have four aces. Man is it great to be a Philly sports fan right now.
Yes, they offered Knuble what he had been making, but they did want him back.. Knuble’s agent told him he could get more from the Caps plus he could hitch his wagon to Ovechkin’s star since clearly the Caps were on their way to the Cup for the next few years. Whenever I think of him now I wonder if he second-guesses that decision.
“Saving face”? When has Homer ever been concerned about that?
Clarke said of McCrimmon’s departure, “He was a boozer who I didn’t think cared.”
That boozer became instrumental in helping the Flames win the Stanley Cup in 1989.

Sorry to go OT so early
Yesterday I thought I destroyed my Mac so I took to the Apple store. My friend was one of the geniuses and helped me out, then he got another customer and a trainee was called over to watch what he was doing to that macbook. I was wearing jeans and a white undershirt when I screwed up my mac so I just threw a Flyers jersey on before heading out, why not? So i start talking to the trainee ad he’s like “Flyers, huh?” and we start talking about them for a little. So of course I say “Ever heard of Broad Street Hockey?” He says no so I tell him about it and the t-shirts.
Later he says that his sister is a Pens fan and some other stuff, then when my Macbook is finished I pull up the t-shirts and show him. As soon as I pull up the Penswagon shirt, his mouth dropped and he goes “OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH I MUST BUY THAT!, my sister would hate it!”
So Travis, let me know if we sell a Penswagon shirt in the next day or two.

So you were saying you were wrong about his true talent level?
Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!
Is this the right room for an argument?
Yes technically speaking but a shouldn’t a shooting percentage of less < 5% be counted as zero anyways.
Personally, I find “round everything below 5% down to 0” to be much less objectionable than reading anything other than variance into a six-week shooting percentage when we know that shooting percentage has enough luck in it that it takes about five years to establish a true talent level.
Who cares if Nodl missed the net on 24 shots in a row? It’s completely meaningless. Danny Briere has a career 15.5% shooting percentage, which means he’ll go on 24-shot goalless streaks a couple times a season (he did it twice last year). Ovechkin has done it four times already this year, including one streak of 45 straight shots without a goal. It’s just not a useful barometer in any sense.
I definitely agree that short-term shooting variance is a useless measure of true talent. A “true” 10% talent has a 12% chance of missing 20 shots in a row, even though on average he should hit two of those. I just had to laugh at reducing 5% to zero, because our best shooting defenseman is Mesz’s 4.6%.
Bob.
But it’s more fun to analyze the stats via Lanci math, and less with logic.

Spanish is actually common enough here that they’ve split the classes into “Spanish for Spanish speakers” and “Spanish.” The former aren’t as stupid as it sounds – they’re more advanced, but a lot of the students are kids that come from Spanish-speaking families but get by with English in day-to-day life.
Bob.
Ok, I have a few general questions for everyone. They are probably dumb but . . .
Why would Da Costa choose to sign with the Flyers or another NHL team rather than register for the draft? What are the rules with players and the draft? A player doesn’t have to register for the draft if he doesn’t want to but runs the risk of not making as much money? Is there some sort of “draft circumvention?”
Just watched a video on Da Costa. Seems like a guy that should be playing for a bigger hockey school but kind of just slipped through the cracks and fell into Merrimack’s lap.

Hyperbole from a Brind'Amour super-fan
Rod Brind’Amour represents everything the phrase “Flyers Hockey” stands for — work ethic, sacrifice, intensity, accountability on both sides of the puck, and respect for the team and his teammates (as well as the game of hockey in general). More naturally gifted and prolific players have worn the Flyers sweater over the years, but no one (in my opinion) that played hockey in Philadelphia better represented what the Flyers — and the Philadelphia sports fans in general — were all about better than Rod Brind’Amour. I was sad to see Brind’Amour get traded, but I was very excited for him when he led the ‘Canes to a Cup. It’s very classy for Carolina to honor him with the Flyers in town tonight; a move that suits the class of the man being honored perfectly. Brind’Amour will always be what I consider the prototype example of what makes a great teammate, a great leader, and a great professional. Salute to one of my favorite Flyers ever! I can’t wait to see him honored in the Hall of Fame in Toronto someday, because that’s exactly where Rod Brind’Amour and the memory of his game belong, aside the names and memories of the greatest to ever lace up in the NHL.
Wow allot of Brindy and allot of topics Geoff. Way to go.
I do remember the 2 shorthanded goals on the same PK. Woolley & Wregget ! Hah !
Do you remember the 2 fastest back to back goals by Rod the Bod ? I think it was like 9 seconds or something but I am just guessing.
I hope that Kaberle does not go to Boston because he is a damn good player and I want him right were he is at in Toronto where he is not as much of a threat that if he was with Boston.
so Jarkko Ruutu goes to Anahiem out far west = Allot of FLYERS knee’s are safe from dirty knee on knee checks or boarding and charging calls. At least safe till next season as I dont suspect a FLYERS vs Anaheim SCF.
Ok so we will all be warm and fuzzy with Rod Brind’Amour and the Hurricanes in the Pre game ceremony but then once we drop the puck – lets get our Game on and forget the chummy chummy crap.

What do the Sens gain from this? They take on an expiring contract for about $1M more/yr and give up on Elliot.
Elliott will be an RFA at the end of the season, and I guess the Senators think Robin Lehner will be ready to take the reins full-time next season, but would rather have an experienced backup (someone other than Anderson, I’d imagine) to work with him.

Went to Nucksmisconduct to get some analysis of their D situation (as well as the awesome graphic). Their troubles may be a bit serious enough to warrant a trade.
http://www.nucksmisconduct.com/2011/2/17/1999178/the-vancouver-canucks-d-a-comedy
Aaron Rome is the second highest scoring d-man on our roster right now… with 3 points (all assists)… no d-man on our current roster other than Ehrhoff has scored this season!
Wow.
Aside: Does Nucks Misconduct always get that kind of traffic, or is it just a hot button issue? I never really factored them into the “big SBN blogs” discussion.
They almost have to make a move to shore up their D. They would be a Cup favorite if they only had 6 healthy, NHL-quality defensemen. I see them making a desperation move to get some help on their blueline. It would be nice if they would consider moving Corey Schneider or Cody Hodgson.
Lifelong Tennessean, Flyers' fan for life
Every one is projected to return before the playoffs, though. They might (read: should) make a depth move, but I don’t think they’ll need to give up anything more than picks (2nd or 3rd) and a minor salary dump to pry away a Matt Walker-type.
Probably not Walker himself, though. They’d want an expiring contract.
Yeah. If we traded Matt Walker there, we’d have to take back Andrew Alberts.

Why would a playoff-bound team trade for Matt Walker, for the purposes of sitting on him until they can unleash him in the playoffs? That seems really unlikely.
Right. I was having some fun w/ Mike’s grammar is all. He seems a bit off his game this morning.
I was just ruminating about who might be able to use Walker since Geoff mentioned him in the Fly-by. Actually I think Walker’s NHL career is over, unless a team has an injury situation.
Speaking of which, did anyone else see this one last night?:

Because Stuart’s cap hit is almost the same as Walker’s. And Chicago had Walker 2 years ago.

Yeah — doubt we could work something out there, but I love it when a team gets in a desperate situation (like Detroit with Leino last year). The name I’ve read being bandied about lately is Ian White of Carolina.

Not that it matters but Eklund has Flyers talking with PHX and BOS. Maybe an Upshall return is still a possibility? Since Zherdev is pretty done on this team I thought it was worth to check the mill.
For those who see some games out West.
I don’t remember Upshall’s defensive play being horrendous on anything is he a significant an upgrade defensively than Zherdev?

We’re not getting any more forwards. Especially not Scottie Upshall.
The Flyers will probably try to move Walker for another depth defenseman with a lesser / expiring contract. They will try to move Z for a draft pick.

I really doubt they can move Walker. No team is in such need of a guy of his talent that they will trade for a guy that they can’t call up until the playoffs without risking re-entry and still has an overvalued contract for next year. In fact, at this point, it doesn’t make a lot of sense of the Flyers not to keep him around for that playoff push.
But Phoenix looking for Z’s scoring makes sense. Boston, if they indeed kept Wheeler, not so much.
If not a forward, who else? The team likes Walker. They have Bartulis and Syvret. And Leighton and Backlund.
Either they’re done, or they are looking to replace Zherdev. I think Chris’ Upshall theory is better than most.

Upshall for Zherdev and Carcillo makes sense they get two top 9 forwards for their roster we get 1 and 800K for bonuses. Both Upshall and Zherdev are UFA and Carcillo is RFA next season.
You consider Carcillo a top 9 forward?

And Michael Leighton was a goalie for a team that went to the finals.
Now where is he?
I don’t see Carcillo as a top 9 forward because he doesn’t do anything particularly well, offense or defense. I guess like CCB said, someone has to take the last spot on the 3rd line. But I don’t consider him to be a top 9 talent.

Right, but the argument that Carcillo wouldn’t be on a top three line relies on not being able to find a team where Carcillo is one of the best nine forwards.
Honestly, I think Carcillo is a third-liner by trade. It’s not his fault he’s on a team with a thousand second-liners.

Watched the Caps last night, against San Jose. They’re actually trying to play defense. Impressed that Boudreau has gained traction in this area. If they can figure that part out and still get back to scoring goals they’re the most worrisome opponent in the conference.
by flyersfaninchicago on Feb 18, 2011 12:22 PM EST reply actions
They’re trying to play defense, but they haven’t yet figured out how to do both, play D and keep scoring to win games. If and when they do figure that out, then I agree that they’ll be dangerous. But for now, they’re trying to revamp their system with mixed results.
Sarauj, Latvija!
Agreed. It’s always impressive when a team tries to address a collective shortcoming. For a problem as big as this one for them it’s worth spending a season to work it out. Hopefully they don’t get the hang of it till next year.

Brindy is my favorite Flyer of all time. But Giroux is making a strong case.
Just thought I would put that out there.
When I played ice hockey I always wore number 21 for Forsberg but when I got to college that number was taken, so the next logical choice…was 17…for Brindy and Jari Kurri.

Colborne, Boston’s 1st in 2011 and a conditional pick for Kaberle the basis of the trade. Trade call still has to be made to close the deal.

Stuart wasn’t going to play either way. It would be like if we traded away Walker before waiving him for a smaller contract that was already in the AHL.
