New Trade Rumor?

So, my brother has a friend who was working the All-Star Game as a reporter and was talking to either Panotch or Homer, I forget which, and he came back reporting a very interesting rumor. Apparently, talks are going on between the Maple Leafs and the Flyers. The Flyers would give up: JVR and two undisclosed draft picks. The Leafs would give up: Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Rumor has it that these talks have been occurring for a couple of weeks now, with the only hold-up being the two draft picks the Flyers would end up giving away.

Thoughts or opinions on whether or not the Flyers can/will do this and if it will be good for either team?

I would hate this forever. We don’t need goalies in my opinion. We have Boucher for this year, and for next year we have Leighton. And with those two we have Bobrovsky!!!!! JVR is growing himself to be a very strong powerforward, KEEP HIM!!!!

I completely agree with you. Not so much with the Leighton thing though, I’m not a fan of him because he never keeps his 5 hole closed. But we have Bobrovsky and Boucher (which are 2 amazing goalies in my opinion) so we don’t need Giguere. Plus, JVR is my favorite and you’re right, he’s gotten much better!

This doesn’t make any sense.

Didn’t the Flyers say they were trying to get “deeper” up front by the trade deadline?

This deal accomplishes that goal HOW?

It doesn’t. I don’t believe it for a second.

Why would the Flyers mortgage their future for J-S Giguere? If it happens, they’re going to fall flat on their faces in the playoffs again.

Hold on.

my brother has a friend who was working the All-Star Game as a reporter and was talking to either Panotch or Homer

If he was talking to anyone, he’d have been talking to Panaccio. Holmgren would NOT disclose this information.

Your brother has “a friend who was working the All-Star Game as a reporter,” huh? No offense to your brother’s friend, but he is not a credible source.

This deal would be horrible for both teams. The Leafs are not happy with Gustafsson, last time I checked. So why get rid of Giguere? You get several pieces of the Flyers’ future and shitty goaltending.

The Flyers get a washed-up goalie who won a Cup four years ago. And they would get shallower up front, not deeper.

This smacks of the same “Flyers looking to upgrade goaltending” shit we’ve been hearing since 1997.

IN consideration, I’d rather get the Monster than Juicy Giggie anyway … but Puh-LEEZE. For ONCE I do agree that the goalie situation is stable, and shopping for a winger IF ANYTHING makes sense – ergo, this ‘rumor’ smacks of utter horse-hockey.

Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.

Also, this rumor has been going around since the beginning of January. It’s not “brand new information” from the All-Star game.

I’m not trying to jump on you here, but I get all squirrely when I hear trade rumors involving JVR – especially in exchange for a past-his-prime goalie with a bad groin.

Toronto have expressed interest in JVR for a while now. I hope that this trade NEVER EVER Happens.

If the Flyers weren’t willing to pony up the cash to get Nabokov this offseason they sure as hell aren’t going to give away JVR and 2 draft picks for a lesser goalie. That’s a real overpay.

I would seriously, seriously doubt this. For starters, if it were THAT CLOSE to be done and you heard it from Panotch, don’t you think he would’ve reported it before telling your brother’s friend? And since there’s no way Homer would ever tell a reporter something like that, it would’ve had to be Panotch, right?

Secondly, it makes no sense at all in any sense of the word sense.

Who is your brother’s friend, by the way?

(Sorry if this comes off as accusatory… I can’t help myself when it comes to 99 percent of rumors.)

I agree about the source comments Travis,

people might as well say, I have a friend of a cousin who is dating the uncle of the brother of NHL Players Agent, and they told me ……

Its almost like in high school when the big mouthed jerk in 8th grade or 9th grade picks on people for being a virgin and when you ask them they claim that they lost their virginity to “that girl that they met that weekend in Canada last summer that they met at the kegger party”

I mean c’mon man ? really ?

I would personally curse out Homer if he got rid of JVR. I’m serious. Don’t do it bub.

by serxoxogi on Feb 3, 2011 8:04 AM EST reply actions

If we need to do anything as all ready stated we need to get stronger up front. If we could get someone to work on Richie’s line then I would be happy and willing to talk

by FlyersFan20 on Feb 3, 2011 8:43 AM EST reply actions

For what it’s worth, philly.com reported that the Flyers are having internal discussions about whether they should do anything at all at the trade deadline. I was very disappointed when the Flyers did nothing at the trade deadline last year. This year? I wouldn’t be disappointed at all, though that doesn’t mean the Flyers can’t improve their lineup.

I'm kind of a dick.

by Vansteel on Feb 3, 2011 9:58 AM EST reply actions

Sorry, but I don’t believe any of this. I think your brother’s friend fabricated this one, or your brother.

Nothing adds up, Homer wouldn’t talk about it, and Panotch wasn’t there.

WTF????

JVR AND draft picks for Guigere? This only happens if Burke slips Quualudes into Homer’s drink and interprets his subsequent nodding as approval to the trade. A bag of pucks and two of Carter’s broken sticks is the only trade for Guigere that makes sense

by Pocono Flyers Fan on Feb 3, 2011 11:01 AM EST reply actions

Agreed

As a Leafs fan I can say JVR for Giggy would be unfair, throw in 2 draft picks and that’s highway robbery.

by The REAL Mike Richards on Feb 12, 2011 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

I would take it upon myself to personally shred and burn Homers new contract if that were to happen.

by philiafan14364 on Feb 3, 2011 11:53 AM EST reply actions

he'd be shot

Homer is a fool but not fooolish enough for a trade like that!!! at least we should hope not….

Your brother’s friend was mistaken; it wasn’t JVR but rather Giroux and two 1st rounders for Guigere.

We are set in goal!

so tired of these “unstable in goal” comments. This rightfully started years ago and has become an epidemic both in Flyer fandom and with rival fans. Enough already! We are set in goal now, aided by a strong defensive unit and defensively responsible forwards/C-men. Trade JVR for JSG!!!! Holmgren has come too far to take a stride forward and 10 back. Now there’s mention of Giroux for JSG – are you kidding me? That would be 100X worse than OKT for Leino and Coburn for Zhitnik combined! I’ve said for years to stop making goaltending the scapegoat here – we finally have a deep team to play in front of the goalies and are well positioned to win the cup – at least as good as anyone else in the NHL. Forget last year already? This team is even better. Wanna get a gritty, 2 way cup experienced forward for the 3rd or 4th line for Nodl, great – keep the G’s intact!

In fact, he was kidding.

Did your brother’s uncle’s friend’s sister’s nephew’s cousin’s roommate also hear that the Flyers were going to trade Jeff Carter for Tomas Kaberle?

by Phalange on Feb 3, 2011 2:32 PM EST reply actions

Well, that one at least was true. Three years ago.

JVR and Picks for... sounds like Homer!!!!

a washed up goalie (who was never that great!!!)…. makes perfect sense to me and while he’s at it maybe he can figure out a way to screw up the cap even more!!!

by Elmo the faithful fan on Feb 4, 2011 12:02 PM EST reply actions

New Strategy

Are we trying to acquire all the players from when Anaheim won the cup? First Pronger, then O’Donnell, now Giggy?

by ov3rl0rdl on Feb 7, 2011 2:29 PM EST reply actions

Also how does Jiggy’s 6 million dollar contract fit into our cap. And why trade for Jiggy when we could just sign him at probably at the magic UFA goalie number 1.5 million next summer as he would be UFA.

by chrislanci on Feb 8, 2011 5:08 PM EST reply actions

I really doubt this will happen. While I agree JVR is a hometown favorite, I do think he is kind of high on the trade list if someone was to go. I just don’t think that deal would make any sense. We do not need a goalie and the cap limitation involved with that kind of trade would be tough to deal with, for a team crunching as the Flyers are right now.

by LMN on Feb 9, 2011 4:11 PM EST reply actions

This will never happen.

I have a better deal –
How about we give Toronto, JVR and Bob for a bag of pucks!

That would make me less angry as i don’t think the bag of pucks would have much of a cap hit.
