Boucher makes 30 saves as Flyers beat Stars, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA -- I'm having computer issues so tonight we'll be doing a recap by committee. If everybody thinks of one comment on tonight's game and puts them below in the uh, comments, we'll get a full recap of tonight's win.
The basics, for now: Andrej Meszaros opened the scoring in the first period and had an awesome celebration to go along with it, and just two minutes into the second period, Darroll Powe scored a shorthanded goal to put the Flyers up 2-0.
Brendan Morrow scored his 23rd goal of the year midway through the second to cut the lead to 2-1, but after some tense moments over the course of the next 20, that all ended about midway through the third. Jeff Carter's goal gave the Flyers a two-goal lead again, which basically iced the cake and gave the team two points.
Oh, and somewhere in there, Kari Lehtonen punched Dan Carcillo in the face. He's 0-10-1 against the Flyers in his career (thanks, Antero.)
Pick the COTN tonight, too, because my computer's dead in 3, 2, 1....

Mainly for Todd:
Fascinating that tonight, Carter was given the shutdown role. Richie wasn’t. There’s something to be said about Laviolette’s rotating of the two. (Yes, Nodl still faced Neal, Richards, and Eriksson more than anybody else on the Stars).

I’d love to know the reason behind it. Maybe the Stars coach tried his hardest to keep Richards away from Richards.
Mourning Gagne forever.
It’s something I’ve seen interspersed throughout the year: Both Carter and Richards will spend roughly half of their time against the other team’s top lines. But last night, Carter got all the defensive zone assignments.
It’s fascinating.

it’s fascinating and exciting… i’m really enjoying the 2-way play both carter and richards bring. I particularly enjoy the confidence and flexibility it gives us in matchups.
i also have been enjoying how Lavvy can double shift any number of players based on hunches and things he has noticed during the game. unlike other teams who have just one or two guys that

Does this go to show that these assignments are more about sheltering the Danny line than using Richards or Carter in the shutdown role? Lavvy sends out either just based on whose shift it is on the rotation.
That’s obviously part of it, but last night’s non-icing defensive zone draws:
Carter: 8
Richards: 5
Briere: 4
Last night was a weird game. I think part of it has to do with the familiarity between teams (the past two games were against the West), as well as Lavy liking to change on the fly – against Nashville, Briere had 3 NI DZ and 4 OZ, while Carter had 9 and 4, and Richards had 5 and 5.
Surely there’s a link to be seen here, I’m just not seeing it.

I really think Lavy plays it by feel who is on in the faceoff circle what the momentum of the game is like and at home you get the last change. So if Danny is put out for a DZone draw I imagine he is still up against 3rd line opposition and regardless of zone start that is the matchup he wants.
Agreed.
It’s really interesting stuff. Having Carter/Giroux and Richards/Nodl allows Lavy that flexibility to shift from game to game, while still keeping Briere away from first-line competition.
And people want to get rid of Nodl. Psh.

Also, if you look at a graph of zone starts for the last 10 games, Briere’s is nearly always negative, and Bett’s is usually the second highest defensive zone start, and then Mike’s and Carter’s alternate. You’d think if Lavy was using them both the same the peaks would even out, but it looks like a mountain range.

So now in the studio, I guess either a) Jonesy might not be there anymore or b) Jonesy will still be there but the poor guy will have to deal with Millbury far more often. I don’t like either of those options.

On the radio broadcast he said something to the effect of “what an honor its been to cover a Flyers team like the one they have assembled this year” He said it within the 1st 5 minutes of the game, almost as a passing thought. It struck me as odd, but let it go because play resumed. I was just thinking about it now and wanted to bring it up.
by Prometheus74 on Feb 5, 2011 10:36 PM EST up reply actions
Hmm, strange. I wouldn’t ordinarily expect much of an effect on our local broadcast team, so I have no idea if there’s a connection there. I didn’t hear the radio broadcast, for my comment above I was only thinking in terms of either having that part time gig for him at Versus disappear, or having to sit uncomfortably through segments where Jonesy has to tolerate Millbury’s nonsense. But that adds another dimension to it, if there’s really something hidden in that comment.

I don’t know why Versus just doesn’t use a good generic type play by play guy then have the one local TV guy from each city to do the color. That way you get both sides and solid opinions from people who actually know the team they are talking about.
I personally don’t care about a guy between the benches but get someone who is funny down there if anyone not just a kiss ass. I would just let Lisa Simpson do it and just use her to grab an interview at a break here and there like an NFL sideline reporter. I don’t need the guy in the box commenting all the time and kissing everyone’s ass.

I was working the Yale-Dartmouth hockey today, so I missed the game tonight. How was Boosh in net?
On another note, I was watching the Quinnipiac game last night and every time the puck went high and wide of the goal, all I could think was “That player just Carter’d” but couldn’t say it cause no one would understand me.
Boosh played very well, making a few great saves in the process.

I liked the Richards line tonight. I thought they worked hard and had some good chances. I even appreciated Nodl trying the smart offensive play he was given, the wrap around. He didn’t do anything fancy – he generated a good scoring chance after working hard. Fine by me. I’m pretty shocked he didn’t score.
I thought the team had a real good night. They didn’t go through the motions as much as they have at times recently. The 3rd period was a great example of kicking a slumping when they are down. Good work team.
My gosh, NHL VideoCenter is horrendous. Unless your internet is blazing fast, you can’t watch game highlights without it stopping every 2 seconds. Why doesn’t it just let you load it like a youtube video and then play it all at once once it is finished?
Anyway, enough ranting. Good to see the Flyers got all three of their goals from non-LBH members (although they were on the ice for Meszaros’ goal). Not that I don’t want them to score but what happens when they don’t? Does the Flyers’ offense crumble? Well, last night, against a Division leader it didn’t. Always love to see balanced scoring obviously, especially when it comes from a defensemen and a 4th liner. Don’t want that all the time, just want to see they are capable of winning in numerous ways, if that makes any sense at all.
Always love to see Boucher play well. I honestly do not believe that the Flyers have any goaltending issues and would be quite content going into the Playoffs with Bouch as the starter. I don’t think going after Vokoun is worth what we would have to give up.
Wacky scheduling means the Flyers don’t play again until Thursday. I just hate these long breaks in between games and I think the players do too. I am sure they would rather keep the ball rolling after two solid wins over good Western Conference teams. Oh well. Gives us time to argue about Nodl or Shelley in the Fly-Bys for the next 4 days ;).
OT: This happened in last nights Sens vs. Isles game. Just funny how pathetic both organization’s goalie situations are.

A bit late, but...
…good win for the Flyers last night. I hope they use their 5 days off productively (and not allow rust to develop like they did on their West Coast swing around New Year’s).
I was looking at the Flyers schedule around the All-Star break, and I have to admit I was feeling good about the remainder of their season. They’re already #1 in the East and they have relatively favorable match-ups for the conclusion of the season. I’ll explain.
The post-All-Star section of the season, as I see it, divides basically into four parts: Feb. 1 to 15, Feb. 16 to Mar. 17, Mar. 19 to 29, and Mar. 31 to Apr. 9 – all four sections are crucial for different reasons.
The first segment is key because, during it, the Flyers play at Tampa twice and face a couple of good teams from the West. Obviously, they stumbled out of the gate in the first game, but won the next two against those good opponents from the West (Nashville and Dallas). (They must win against Tampa on the 15th, even if it’s in OT/SO – they don’t want to be 0-4 against the team they’re in direct contention with for the #1 seed in the East.) Let’s hope the Flyers play well against Carolina and LA before the rematch with the Bolts.
The next segment and the last segment I’ll lump together because they are very similar, i.e., they play a whole bunch of opponents they should do very well against. I’m not saying that they’ll win every game; I am saying that the Flyers have an golden opportunity to accumulate points during these segments. Let’s hope they do.
This leaves only the third segment, the one from the 19th to the 29th of March – this one, IMHO, will ultimately determine what seed they get in the East: home and away games against the Pens, home games against Boston and Washington, and an away game against Dallas (and an away game against the Isles, but that game doesn’t really stand out like the other ones, does it?) Key games during a key time in the season – how they play then will determine a lot.
Well, there are certainly no guarantees in anything, but, if they play up to their capabilities for the remainder of the year, they have quite a good opportunity to nail down the top spot. I hope they can – this year, unlike last year (and a few years before then), I think having the top spot in the East will be meaningful. It would be nice to have a majority of home games early in the postseason for once.

i know he doesn’t have the room on this team to be that guy… but Gretzky’s prediction that Carcillo would be a 30 goal-scorer in the NHL is not that absurd as far as skill-set, just not realistic when the guy set his career goal to break the PIMs record, and then was calmed down into a 4th-liner roll with low minutes on a deep team…

But if Ville is really going to sign for 3, maybe 4 years, this is his “prime” contract, theoretically the most he’ll ever make. Besides, being a UFA he can walk or request arbitration. You know G is going to get a lot more than 3.75 when he gets to his “prime” years.
