Friday Morning Fly By: Good Game and Good Luck, Whyno
With the unthinkable death and destruction going on in Japan today, the relative insignificance of hockey issues gets put in striking perspective. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Japanese people.

I need to get the whole carcillo thing off my chest this morning. Did Komaserick(?) go over board on him, probably, did carcillo go over board with lunging into the boards definitely. First of all carcillo knew Komaserick was behind him because before the hit he tapped him on the leg, so carcillo wasnt unaware of his presence. When the trainer came out he was rubbing his back as if the push to his upper butt was his problem. Then after running his toothless mouth like an idiot he refused to drop the gloves with Brown. Brown then proceeded to draw a power play from the flyers. There is no honor in yapping like an idiot and not backing it up. And if anyone is proud of his embellishment to draw the major, you should be ashamed. I am not going to pretend that I already didn’t like the guy, but this is bad stuff in my opinion.
Just Call Me "M"!
Basicly he can no right? I actully applauded Carcillo for not going beserk the rest of the game after that boarding against him.

the Dan Carcillo from December 2009 when Coach Laviolette took over might have done something dumb – but the Dan Carcillo as of today March 2011 is a Wiser player due to the coaches confidence and a few bench rides.

If that was an embelishment, he truly is a team player. His face slammed into the boards and his leg twisted behind him at a ridiculous angle. That’s taking one for the team.
I'm kind of a dick.
I’m enjoying the copious ammounts of sarcasm. Why the hell would anyone try to put themselves in that position to be seriously hurt while embelshing? Carcillo has been dumb, yes, but not that dumb.

Honor? He’s a yapper and a pest. Not a samurai. Not a medieval knight. He was doing his job. Trying to draw penalties.

M I don’t like selling plays, attempting to draw penalties or diving. I am of that same old school man up mentality, especially from players like Carcillo who do hit and fight and play physical game. One thing for little Danny B to be dirty with the stick and flop when he gets hit. It is another for Carcillo to do the same while claiming to be a tough guy warrior. But that is the Barnaby “pest” model. I prefer guys like Shelly, Lappy, Betts and Powe as my tough guys but that is just me I hate pests.
All that being said after the CHARA hit and all the Air Canada BS anything remotely dangerous was going to draw some serious penalties from the officials, Carcillo knew that and milked it.
Feels like cheating to me but this is coming from a guy who refuses to lie or embellish to get out of jury duty despite being picked for week long trials every time since I have been 18.
Personally, I am a Carcillo supporter and here is why.
The guy is a character. There is absolutely no denying it. I think having at least one character on a team is essential and it is because they are contagious.
To put it simply, he’s the life of the party. Have you ever been at a party that’s pretty boring and not going so well? Then this one guy shows up and all of a sudden the party comes to life? To me, that is Carcillo. He’s Louie dipping his balls in stuff.
Say what you will about the guy. He doesn’t have skill. He is stupid. He runs his mouth. He embellishes. If he was the only one embellishing I might have a problem with it, but he is in no way the only guy on this team that embellishes and there are plenty of guys on every team who do it.
The fact is the guy brings energy and an edge that is contagious. The team just has a different feel when he is out there, especially when he gets time on Richards’ line. We saw the same thing last year when he was put with Richards and Gagne. As much as I hate the cliché, they play more Flyers Hockey with him than without him. This team just functions better when they’re pissed off and play chippy. He’s the guy who causes the situations that trigger this.
Remind me to never go to a party with Louie.

He didn’t embelish anything on that hit. His legs folded awkwardly and he hit the boards torso firrst. It was the type of fall into the boards that have seriously injured players who weren’t as lucky. don’t think that Komaserick deserved a game misconduct, but he certainly deserved the 5 minute major. The message from the league is simple on these types of plays… when the player is in front of you and you’re looking at their back, and it’s right by the boards, if you decide to put your gloves and stick into the square of their back and give them a helping hand into the dasher, you’re going to get a penalty. Sure it maybe a bit frustrating now that you can’t just hit em as in days of old, but to me it’s really no different than when I started playing men’s hockey after playing full contact hockey up through college, and had to learn how to play “no-check”.
I think this excerpt from Leafs’ blogger, Mike Augello’s, report of the game is quite telling. SOD needs a rest.
Toronto was stymied by the Flyers excellent defensive zone play, but still managed to narrow the lead to one on a great individual effort by Mike Brown, who carried the puck from his own blueline, made a move that turned Flyers defenseman Sean O’Donnell into a pretzel and fed the puck to Joffrey Lupul, who snapped the puck past Boucher.
Sarauj, Latvija!
I’m surprised this hasn’t gotten more responses. SOD might be tired. Might be injured. But it might be useful to sit him, rather than Boynton, when Pronger comes back.

They’ve changed it now.
Editors’ Note:
Previously one of our writers posted a highly insensitive article in this space comparing the recent events in Japan to substantially less destructive sports natural disasters, and one of our editors made the poor choice to promote the article. We are dealing with this internally and will hold ourselves accountable.
Rather than delete the article, our first instinct, we would like to redirect any attention coming to this page to encourage donations to support the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
That’s pretty embarrassing.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
It’s better than deleting it. But when they point out “Hey, at least we didn’t delete it”… it comes off as a wash to me.
I guess admitting fault is a step in the right direction.

Well, the problem is that they throw all the blame on the writer. They featured the article on the front page of their site. The writer didn’t do that, an editor did. It wasn’t JUST the writers fault. They say there’s liability, but it’s really just throwing the writer under the bus.

That’s true!
They are 0-1 without Powe, and 42-18-6 with him.
I sure hope they don’t start scratching Powe; statistics say they’ll never win again.
Seriously though, nobody really thinks that the difference between our 11th and 14th forward is so large that it would dramatically affect the team winning percentage, right?
No, people do. That’s the point.
What’s funny is that those same people were pointing to Carcillo’s plus/minus and middling goal production (and penalties) as reasons why Shelley is better than him.
They are now pointing to the team’s play in saying he is better than Nodl and Zherdev.

Carcillo averages 7:51 when he plays.
Does it really pass the basic plausibility test that in less than eight minutes, Dan Freaking Carcillo lifts the team from 11-11-3 to 31-8-3?
Carcillo is not a difference maker. I doubt he’s more than a win or two better than using nobody in that spot and just going with 11 forwards. He might be better than Nodl/Zherdev/Shelley or he might not, but the difference will be a small number of wins.
-0.8 GVT. Better than only Jody Shelley (-0.9) and Oskars Bartulis (-0.9).
But since I hate DGVT with a passion, let’s look at only OGVT:

Daily headline critique
First, this should be a regular feature provided by the commentariat.
Second, I assume you’re either quoting Murrow or Hart, but either way, that should be “Good Night, and Good Luck, Whyno”. Both because the “good game” portion doesn’t address Whyno, and because the “good night” still makes sense.
You’re welcome!
I typed Good Night and Good Luck, but didn’t think Murrow applied.
So I changed it to Good game, and had a fleeting thought that someone/something had always said “Good night, good hockey” or something.

I don’t know about you guys but I’m having an EPIC Friday. Started off with cupcakes brought in by a guy that had our teams logo on it and one was shaped like our mascot (the one I took, of course)
Then I was mentioned by name in the Union’s article about the Stache Bash on their official website.
Two minutes ago the GM stopped by our office with freshly made Philly pretzels.
I think it’s safe to say I love this gig.

My thoughts are with those people in Japan and everyone in the Pacific affected by the tsunami. Terrible stuff. Since 1900, it is the 5th largest recorded earthquake.
To those in the Pacific, if you see water receding or feel an earthquake, head for the hills.

At my local library today, I was looking on a shelf and saw a book called “The Russian Enigma” , thought about Zherdev, and almost cracked up laughing in the middle of everyone.

‘Cause you know guys… I’m actually Simon Gagne.
What confused her, the “Gagne Fan For Life” part? Or does she think Gange is a lazy bum?
Either way, uh, that’s real funny. And congrats on being mistaken for a well-liked hockey player!
