As for Kovar, his team lost 2-0 last night and they were eliminated from the playoffs. Watched most of the game, good one.
I thought he had a good game despite the loss and good playoffs overall.
What went wrong with Zlín? I saw they got swept.
Definitely good game and playoffs too. Considering how many games he played in the regular season and all it’s kind of miraculous he managed to keep his game at such high level.
As for Zlin. That’s so typical for them. I believe in past 6 years the quarter finals were always our exit. With the exception of ‘07-’08 season when we were dead last in the league. Last time we got through the first round was ‘04-’05 season, we got to the finals, where we got swept by… guess who? Pardubice. Haha. They do enjoy sweeping us.
We were simply much worse team than them and it seemed like we couldn’t play for full 60 minutes. That will kill you in the playoffs.
I kind of expected him to have good playoffs considering how he played in the regular season, but I am impressed by his season overall. It was definitely a great debut season in the starter role. Not only because of his play, but also because of his durability which I saw as a bigger question mark at the beginning of the season.
Ouch. Sounds like Pardubice has your number. Maybe they had an advantage on the mental side because of the past. Judging by the regular season I did expect Zlín to do better and I did expect them to beat Pardubice. I certainly didn’t see them get swept. I think it’s kinda weird they choked like that since there didn’t seem to be a big difference between those teams in the regular season.
I absolutely agree on Kovar.
Well, Pardubice are a great team but since they didn’t have Hasek and the games in regular season were pretty tied I really believed we could get into the second round. It’s not like Sparta who definitely owns our number. But we were outplayed so bad… it was painful to watch the home games, to be there and watch them play like it was a regular season game which doesn’t matter to them at all. Sad. Disappointing.
It does sound disappointing if it looked like they didn’t care. Maybe they were battling with injuries and it slowed them down?
Well, there’s always next year…
… for the curse to continue. Haha.
Rinaldo!!! I love Rinaldo and Tostidos.

I swear, Clarke always loved players like this – a sort of impish devil with a mean streak a mile wide (See: ‘Gremlins’). And Holmgren seems to be continuing the infatuation, for reasons unbeknownst to us mere mortals. Between Downie and Rinaldo, I’m not sure which one is more volatile. While I can appreciate a player that plays with an edge to their game, these guys are simply vicious little bastards that obviously weren’t spanked enough as kids (or too much, depending on your favorite theory of childhood psychology).
I’d rather see Sestito or new-Carcillo dress for the team, rather than Rinaldo, old-Downie, or old-Carcillo.

I have a lot of catching up to do...
Heck of a freakin’ weekend. I was in Pittsburgh, just down the street from the Consol center, and got to witness the Habs fans staying at the hotel celebrating and the rest of the city drinking itself into a stupor for both St Patty’s day parade and the Penguins loss. So I was all good until I watched, from my cell phone, the Flyers fall apart. And then of course the Phantoms lose in overtime a few minutes later.
So the segue out of that is that if I can’t calm down about the loss, it amazes me that Lavy can be calm about it. It seems so unLavy-like to me; but I hope it’s just that he knows that the team needs him to stay calm and so he’s able to do so.
So I stopped in my bar yesterday afternoon, and the bartender, who follows the Flyers somewhat, asked me, “Hey, I didn’t see the 3rd period last night, did we finally get a shutout?”
I'm kind of a dick.
Ouch

I would have ordered a drink, drank it, replied, with “no they didn’t, asshole” and then left. Without paying. That is really the only sufficient response given the circumstances.

He was serious, though. He was absolutely floored when I told him, that, not only did we not get the shutout, we didn’t even win the fucking game.
Plus, going to the bar and having one drink is like eating one potato chip. Doesn’t work.
I'm kind of a dick.
Yeah, my wife was shocked Sunday morning when I told her the Flyers lost. She was upstairs and heard me cheering a lot (especially after the hat trick), and just assumed we won….dammit, I’m still pissed about the loss, especially given that the Caps are on a roll right now.
Sarauj, Latvija!
Don texted me flipping out about blowing a two-goal lead.
When I responded “It was a three-goal lead”, he was less than happy.

So, what are the circumstances around Rinaldo? I looked at the game sheet, and he got a misconduct for abuse of officials.
I'm kind of a dick.
From the Post-Game:
He baited the Devils into two early penalties, but then Louis Robitaille, who’s been doing this kind of thing a lot longer, got the best of him, goading him into the consecutive minors and game misconduct.
Albany’s coach:
We had talked about Rinaldo at the beginning of the game. He went after (Tim) Sestito, he picked his spot. We knew it was going to happen and I like the way we responded. I think guys were pretty ticked off that the start, someone wanted to grab him. We knew he was trying to suck us in. Looked like a young Louis Robitaille doing his stuff out there as opposed to the old Louis. He got him and he got wound up and he got kicked out."
The In-Game:
Rinaldo just took a really bad one. Trying to retaliate to a hit by Louis Robitaille, he interfered with him. Then trying to goad him into a fight, he roughed him. The end result is a four-minute power play for Albany. He has to know that Robitaille isn’t going to go with him there.

21 – Gagne team Canada
3 – used to be one of my fave numbers when I was a kid
13 – same as above, I also enjoy liking stuff people are usually scared of (Friday 13 anyone? haha)
8 – Ovechkin and one of my fave players in Zlin
2 and 1 – Gagne if you put them together
9 – another fave player in Zlin
And I forgot to add:
16 – another Zlin player
46 – Valentino Rossi
See I wasn’t sure if 21 was Forsberg or Team Canada Gagne (stupid Iginla)…and the 2 and 1 totally threw me off.

Stupid Iginla, indeed! Haha yeah…
Also… Give me your explanation for 91 and 19… just so I know if you got it right. Haha.
91 I figured was Stamkos (he wore 17 playing with St Louis for Team Canada at the 2009 WC’s though, just saying). 19 Stevie Y building the team? I wasn’t really sure about 19.

In looking through Eric’s spreadsheet from yesterday, something I found interesting: 3-0 and 3-1 leads are the worst for the Flyers, while 2-1 and 2-2 games are the best.

I wonder how that would compare with other teams? Is it indicative of the Flyers simply not being aggressive with the larger lead, or is it something all teams tend to do? Also, I wonder if we seem to jump out to a lead earlier than most, giving other teams a longer chance to get back in. Although, with our 2nd period numbers, that’s probably not true…..

That is why a 2 goal 3rd period lead is the worst lead in hockey. In general two goal last frame is a bad lead in any sporting event. Give up one goal early and then look out Momentum builds. The key in my mind is holding a two goal lead with unders 7 minutes left. That is pretty hard to blow that.
Minus last game of course.
I struggle with Lavy’s comments that he thinks the team worked hard in the 3rd period on Saturday. From my seats, it looked like they stopped hitting (anybody have # of hits per period?) and were just gliding after loose pucks, not skating. To me, that’s backing off. But I’ll agree with what DragonGirl said above, that maybe the team needs him to stay calm right now.

Yeah, I love red wine with fish.
I’d say ice cream. I don’t really care for dairy with red wine as it upsets the stomach.
Otherwise, everything else is fair game. Chocolate is DELICIOUS with red wine.

I’ve put blackberry wine and blueberry wine on ice cream, and they’re both “red.”

There’s this neat little tour they do out of Phillipsburg. You ride a steam train down the Delaware, and stop at two places, Alba Vineyards (which is huge) and Villa Millagro (which is small and very quaint, run by a husband and wife) It’s a lot of fun riding the train, and they let you drink on it. It’s like a 3 or 4 hour trip, and cost around $40. I had a blast.

I was always told white wine with fish. Then again, I’m not a wine drinker…

That’s the rule, but there’s always exceptions (like, you can drink a ‘lighter’ red such as Chianti with a ‘darker’ fish like salmon). And besides, if you want white, drink white. If you want red, drink red. If you want pink, get some new taste buds cause that stuff sucks regardless of pairing.

Yes, but I am glad for it because it was the first wine I liked. It was my gateway drug. When I first tried wine, Chardonnay, Cabernet and Merlot were the only three I had heard of, and they were all too dry for me. White Zin was tasty and sweet, and I eventually learned to like the drier stuff, which is mostly what I drink now.

To be fair, there are some good pink/blush wines that exist; but those that are the most popular aren’t the good ones.

Am I “UN-AMERICAN” for saying that I Hate NCAA March Madness Basketball ? Of course I root for the local teams to win – Villanova, Temple, St. Joe’s or Lasalle or Drexel because I always have civic pride and want a championship for philadelphia area. (Heck I rooted for SmartyJones)
But ..
A. I dont like Basketball
B. Most Importantly – I do not like the fact that in the Playoff Push for NHL, that one Month of COLLEGE (not even pro) Sport gets the focus when we could be focusing on the FLYERS preparing to win a Stanley Cup for the City of Philadelphia.
Like – What the heck do I care about GONZAGA when I couldn’t point to it on the map if you spotted me the state ? and Unless I went to GONZAGA why do I care about them only in March and dont care 11 months out of the year?
Thats my view.
I guess I love HOCKEY and FLYERS sooooo much. .. that I look at it like a distraction towards preparing for a championship.
anyone else feel that way?

To me, college basketball is the only watchable form of the sport. I do enjoy it, and I root for Maryland since I went there. But they’re not in the tournament this year, so I’m going to find it hard to care. Though I might fill out a bracket anyway, since it won me a few hundred bucks a couple years ago.
All of that said, nothing else even comes remotely close to hockey for me. I’ll rearrange my schedule or use my DVR to make sure I can catch Flyers games. For almost anything else, if I miss it, I miss it. And I don’t really read much about other sports online, either. I enjoy watching other sports, but hockey is clearly #1.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
I don’t care about basketball or March madness at all, but just like you I root for the local teams, or teams from where close friends of mine went to school. Once you extend it to rooting, even half heartedly, for some team that either is local or you know someone who went there, almost everybody cares about some team in the bracket and people get swept up into the fact that everybody else seems to care.
For the record, one of my good friends went to Gonzaga, so I’d actually kinda root for them if it’ not against a Philly team. I’d want my friend to be happy his team did well, so I’d root for them for him.
That said, I’ve watched all of 5 minutes of March Madness basketball in the last 10 years combined, and it was the last 5 minutes of the big Nova/Pitt game a few years back

I love March Madness. Nova’s gonna get killed in the first round maybe, second round definitely and I don’t care. I’ll root for all the local teams, but mostly—I’ll just sit on the couch for two days with beer and watch basketball.
THIS TIME OF THE YEAR IS SO AWESOME!
And baseball’s just around the corner. Can’t wait!

Just wanted to defend Rinaldo for a bit on here. Before he took any penalties, he laid the absolute hit of the year on Sestito’s older brother, open ice head on collision. Sestito and Robataille both went after him, both taking swings and Rinaldo ignored them both. He drew a penalty there and everything looked well. As we know, things deteriorated, but when Jon Kalinski gets ejected and Andrew Rowe gets in a fight you have to understand how this game went. Rinaldo provides an energy that is definitely noticable when it’s absent. Unfortunately, his reputation precedes him and he never recieves the benefit of the doubt.

That really pissed me off. Bastards wrote a headline just to get clicks, and then tell you right away that the headline is a blatant lie. Made me think of B/R…

They’ve predicted more tsunamis coming, too, on the north shore. Scary, scary stuff. They said that the tremors reached us here in PA 13 minutes after the initial quake and raised the earth 1 inch—not enough to feel anything—but enough to register.
I don’t like nuclear power plants and I live close enough to one that I have those special pills you take in the event of a meltdown. The fricken thing doesn’t even power PA; it’s for NYC. I don’t really want to die for those bastards.

I’ve done work at the Limerick plant. I was uneasy the whole time I was there. Not to mention the airport right next to it, basically.
I'm kind of a dick.
After 9-11, they had snipers stationed outside the plant for a few months and the airspace was severely restricted (the airport is nearby) to the point where the airport basically had to shut down for several months.
Limerick is a safe power plant, but in the event of a natural disaster or terrorist attack, no amount of safeguards are going to do much.
Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.
Yeah, security was very tight even when I worked there several years ago. Automatic weapons, complete vehicle and body searches for outside contractors, and drugs and explosive testing.
My uneasy part was just simply being that close to a nuclear power plant. It’s just creepy to me.
I'm kind of a dick.
Actually, most nuclear plants are designed to sustain damage from a natural disaster or terrorist attack.
And part of the problem with the plants in Japan is that their backup power for the cooling system didn’t work, which had nothing to do with the containment of the reactor core.
Would you want to live right next to one? It’s just not comforting to many people.
You can show me all the stats in the world on this, but when 9-11 happened, I was scared shitless about it being attacked.
Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.

Sort of unrelated, but my dad was working at the Atlantic City International Airport on 9/11. If you’re unaware, ACY is also home to the 177th Fighter Wing — they were the first military planes to respond to NYC on 9/11. Basically, if they were to shoot down a jet on 9/11, those guys would’ve done it.
Anyway, he was out in a field somewhere when it happened — had no clue what was going on. Three black SUV’s come rolling up out of nowhere and tell them to get in and evacuate, etc. Needless to say, they were scared shitless.

Which is why people need to be educated. You probably get more radiation from your cell phone then you do from living next door to a nuke plant.
OFF TOPIC
SHOULD NOT fear Nuclear Power plants. This is a major issue for me. Clean sustainable energy source that could greatly improve the energy crisis and dependence on foreign oil and pollution in general. They are extremely safe. And minus Chernobyl and 3 Mile Island there have been very few problems. 3 Mile Island was barely much of anything. Factor in both of the reactors well commissioned in the in the mid 1970’s I am sure 40+ years later safety and technology has improved greatly.
However Environmentalists have been running a FEAR campaign about nuclear power for decades.
Less than 20% of the US electricity is provided by nuclear power yet 80% of France is nuclear provided. The US should be attempting to hit that number but there hasn’t been a new nuclear power plant build in the US for about 5 years.
Obama even recently shit canned the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waster Storage Facility project essentially throwing $90 Billion Dollars of our tax money down the drain as constructions started in 2002 under Bush and with the regime change killed it leaving it unfinished.
Nuclear Power is certainly a much more realistic option that inefficient Solar Arrays and Wind Mill Parks that wouldn’t help shit.
Obama even recently shit canned the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waster Storage Facility project essentially throwing $90 Billion Dollars of our tax money down the drain as constructions started in 2002 under Bush and with the regime change killed it leaving it unfinished.
Not to get into politics, but I was going to respond before I saw that paragraph. Who wants to store used fuel rods in their state? Fuel rods that won’t stop being radioactive for thousands of years? And who knows if the waste storage is actually safe? If $90 billion was wasted, how much was going to be spent down the line that no longer is?

Millions of years to correct you.
And do you really care if they store fuel rods in underneath a mountain in the middle of the desert that is 100 miles from Vegas and the former test site for close to 1000 Nuclear Bomb Tests. No exactly a place lots of people were planning on visiting anyway.
And certainly a lot better than storing everything on site which doesn’t make any sense.
And spending 90 billion and not finishing a project is the worse idea ever. If you already made that kind of commitment you should see it through till the end.
Millions of years to correct you.
Thought so, but would rather under-estimate than over and look hyperbolic.
And do you really care if they store fuel rods in underneath a mountain in the middle of the desert that is 100 miles from Vegas and the former test site for close to 1000 Nuclear Bomb Tests. No exactly a place lots of people were planning on visiting anyway.
It’s not about whether anyone is going to visit or not. It’s also not about what the other 49 states want. It’s about the environmental impact in the surrounding areas, it’s the dangerous transportation to and from, it’s the target on the state and the necessary spending precautions that go along with it. And more.
And spending 90 billion and not finishing a project is the worse idea ever. If you already made that kind of commitment you should see it through till the end.
This doesn’t make sense. Wikipedia says the budget was reduced to $390 billion in 2008. Cutting your losses after less than 25% of spending is not “the worst idea ever”. It’s deciding not to sink $300 billion more into it.
Unless you’re prepared to say that the DoD should have kept spending money on the Presidents’ helicopters, or that Chris Christie should have stopped building the tunnel, you don’t just make a blanket statement that once you spend 25% of the estimated cost, you pay the rest.

‘Clean’ and ‘sustainable’ in referring to nuclear power are VERY relative terms. The generation process leaves very little in the way of released pollution, but the regular recycling of cooling and production materials creates a bunch of highly radioactive waste (hence the need for the Yucca facility). Perhaps the process is better for the carbon cycle, but worse in other ways … I really can’t judge.
Also, windmills are getting more efficient every day, as are the newest generation of solar arrays. Sure, they occupy more real estate, but if you use fiberoptic transmission lines you can power Philly from wind turbines off the coast of NJ or solar panels on the slag heaps in upstate PA. (Don’t forget about geothermal and hydrokinetic power as well – lots of promising research there these days.) The largest wind turbine currently produces around 10MW each – or enough for 1500 homes.

Re: Wind energy,
Several countries have achieved relatively high levels of wind power penetration, such as 20% of stationary electricity production in Denmark, 14% in Ireland and Portugal, 11% in Spain, and 8% in Germany in 2009. As of May 2009, 80 countries around the world are using wind power on a commercial basis.
Go up and down the Yucatan Peninsula and take note of the wind mills that “aren’t doing shit,” especially if by that you mean “providing sustainable, clean energy.”

But basing that high a % of your generation on a non-firm generation source can wreak absolute havoc with the reliability of the electric system. Which is why power from nuclear is useful, since it provides a solid base-load.
Yeah, until we develop the fuel cell technologies to use these alternative energy sources effciently on a large scale, nuclear power is the best way to go.
There’s plenty of studies showing that when it isn’t sunny, it tends to be windy – so if you have equal production capability in both you’re good most of the time. And as I suggested, geothermal and hydrokinetic NEVER have ‘down’ time, so no need for energy storage at all.
Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.

I was going to jump in on this, but I’ll let my fellow Lehigh alum handle this one.

Is this the right room for an argument?
If only we could convince the wind to blow harder during periods of peak electricity demand …

Add the area of those countries together I am pretty sure Texas is bigger just taking a guess there.
I agree.
It took until this morning for the International Skating Union to postpone/possibly cancel the World Figure Skating Championships that were supposed to be held in Tokyo next week.

As our fund tracker clearly shows.
Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.
I do, too, even though it looks sort of phallic.

Dude, I KNOW that—doesn’t mean that thermometers don’t look phallic at first glance.

Yeah, it doesn’t take the victim into account either. Even if you put Briere in and say Crosby is the victim and is out for the season, there’s still no suspensions as an option on the wheel.

We need a flowchart of Homer’s level of concern about an injury, in relation to severity of the injury.
Although, I suppose “None” -——>"Fatal" works.

Maybe. But I think maybe there could be a several question evaluation, like the ones I often have to take at the doctor or that you find in magazines. You have a question, and then option A is worth 1 point, B is 2pts, etc. Then after a few questions you add up the total for your answers and that determines your spot on the meter. Sort of like the concussion test DGB did, only make a serious one.

Also, it should be said: 3-4 weeks is a very conservative time frame if the surgery is simply putting a rod through to support the fracture.
So, I go to school and come back here and find out I’m a child alchoholic and have an odd fettish for villans. None of which are true, mind you. And no, I do not select favorite players based on looks. Though it is a bonus if they are attractive.

Carcillo: At the young age of about 13, watching my first few gateway drug games, I was young and mildly confused by hockey (I liked it, just wasn’t very knowledgible about it). It started off I would pick 4 players, one on each line, to watch and pay special attention to throughout the game. Well, one of those first few games I picked Carcillo. He scored that night, and I was hooked. I liked the energy he brought and his way of play. As I learned about hockey, my Dan love stayed with me.
Rinaldo: Again with my pick a player and watch, only I was older and knew more about hockey. It was at my first OHL game, and he got in a fight. He brought energy and the crazier he gets/got the more interesting I find him. Its not an attraction, its more of a study. I want to see how he turns out as a NHL/AHL player. I see him maturing and becoming a good hockey player, or something bad happening and him being done forever.
Sestito: I was watching various NHL games on nhl network, when a Columbus Bluejackets game came on (2009 season) and I liked his style of play so I’ve kept tabs on him and now he’s on the Phantoms am excited for his play.

I’m just excited because we were joking in a game thread about how it sounded like the announcer called him “Tostito” and it stuck, and then he got traded here.
