Grandfather Visors
Hey there people,
I am wondering how many hockey fans think the the NHL and NHLPA need to mandate players wearing visors starting next season. What are your thoughts?
The recent news that Vancouver Canucks center Manny Malhotra will miss the rest of the season and playoff due to being struck in the eye by the puck and the injury to the Flyers own Ian Laperriere definitely are incidents that could have been prevented with the use of a visor.
I believe the only Flyers to not wear visors are Pronger, SOD, Shelly and Carcillo. Every player now grows up playing with a shield. It should not be that hard to justify requiring visor equipment at the NHL level. The notion that it would impede some players vision of the puck is nonsense due to the overwhelming majority of NHL stars that currently use visors.
Plus, the 'goon' players that don't wear visors really need to be forced out of the league too. This would be another step in that direction. Players with visors still can fight.
I just think it makes too much sense to have this rule.

I’d prefer visors were illegal. Keeps people from standing around in front of the net like bozos.

Sounds Cherry’d there ;)
Visors sound fine to me. I want them mandatory. I mean, there was no trouble at the Olympics (if memory serves only a handful of veterans got to choose whether to wear a visor, and Pronger was one of the few that didn’t). Players like Tom Poti and Nicklas Lidstrom who only recently started wearing them said they took some getting used to, but they’re okay after a month or so.

couldn't have said it better...
it just make too much sense.
let’s see…
playing with a piece of glass over your eyes….. or loosing ur eye on a freak play. Wouldn’t be much of a decision for me to be frank.
Say hi to the bad guy.
Yankees/Flyers/Gunners
People had the same reaction to wearing helmets. But look how much safer the players are.

Speaking of Don Cherry… Do you remember when he claimed that mostly Quebecois and/ or European players wear visors. News coverage here and, funnier, here. I cannot find the original of his comment.
At first I thought Cherry was implying that the visor’d are wimpier, but now I learn he was saying that visor-wearers were less safe with their play.
Well. According to this collection of stats, Cherry was correct about the number of visor-wearing players at the time of his statement:
PLAYERS WHO WEAR VISORS
Total Number of Players Wearing Visors:………………………………234 (35% of all players)
Total Number of North Americans Wearing Visors:……………….82 (35% of players who wear visors)
Total Number of Europeans Wearing Visors:………………………..122 (52% of players who wear visors)
Total Number of French Wearing Visors:……………………………….30 (13% of players who wear visors)
Etc.
But on the other hand, players with visors take proportionally fewer high-sticking penalties, per this study.
But, that doesn’t address the question of standing in the crease, blocking shots, or fisticuffs when wearing a visor.
The first two occur when a player is willing to put his own body at risk. But should a visor-wearing player be obligated to remove his helmet when fighting? The other guy could break or cut his hand on the visor.
I hardly see how a visor/ helmet removal rule would work in hockey, except by the consent of the pugilists themselves. It’s sort of like in a barroom brawl, where everybody agrees to take off their rings and watches before throwing down.
