Thursday Morning Fly By: Where The Hell Is Bemidji State?

Photo

Today's open discussion thread, complete with your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes...

  • Get excited, out-of-towners: tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins is on NHL Network. [NHL.com]
  • Jeff Carter missed practice on Wednesday with a "maintenance day," although it might be a little more than the Paul Holmgren and the Flyers are letting on. [Philly Sports Daily] [@AnthonySan37]
  • The Flyers signed Bemidji State Beavers captain Matt Read to a three-year deal on Thursday. The Courier-Post spelled Bemidji wrong in a headline, so they're not getting a link. [BSH] [Philly Sports Daily]
  • Read will join the Phantoms for the rest of the season. [Up North Sports Report]
  • Danny Syvret was sent down to the Phantoms yesterday. Also, Andrew Rowe returned to the team from Greenville now that he has enough games under his belt to qualify for the ECHL playoffs. He'll go back down to get some playoff experience. [PostStar.com] [PSD]
  • Speaking of the Phantoms, we'll be in Glens Falls this weekend to take in the action on Friday and Saturday night. Anything you'd like us to cover, in particular? Drop us a line.
  • Panotch on the goaltending issues, namely Bob's Tuesday night performance. [CSN Philly]
  • Okay, so today calls for a dedicated row for Philly Sports Daily. Dave Isaac is clearly following in Steve Whyno's footsteps, writing 900 stories a day, including these two features: The Flyers aren't concerned about the goaltending woes [PSD], but the Crosby-less Penguins still worry them [PSD].
  • Jim Jackson compares last year's "Big Four" defensemen to this year's "Big Five." There's a Drexel = Sean O`Donnell joke in there somewhere. [CSN Philly]
  • Mike Chen broke down the numbers to find out which team is the dirtiest in the league and which player cheats the most. Hint: they'll both play at the Wells Fargo Center tonight. [SBNation.com]
  • Finally, it appears as though God hates the Calgary Flames. [SBNation.com] [Puck Daddy]

Tough decision in terms who to start in goal tonight. It’s an important game in as far as putting space between us and the Pens in order to win the division, so Boucher seems the logical choice. However, it’s also important to bolster Bob’s confidence down the stretch, and give him a chance to bounce back after the Caps game. I’m on the fence…

I drove down to Philly yesterday and heard an interview with Lavi on the radio talking about the situation/who is going to start in the playoffs….. he was very vague and said that he’s thinking about playing both Bob and Boucher during the playoffs. But for tonight’s game, I’m on the fence too, it’s a big game, and Bob could possibly rebound from Tuesday night and build his confidence, but then I keep leaning towards Boucher to start too…. will be interesting.

Also, it was awesome to finally go to the WFC!

NHL Network

I really hope the NHL doesn’t pull one of their famous boneheaded moves by blacking out the game tonight on DirecTV. It seems like every time they play on NHL Network it’s always getting blacked out in my area. :(

My teams are the Flyers, Phillies and the Steelers. Deal with it.

Shit, I didn’t even think of that. Now I’m worried. They’ve blacked it out for me before, too, and I’m definitely outside the local CSN broadcast.

by LegionofDoom on Mar 24, 2011 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe at some point all that FCC lawsuit stuff will finally stick and the terrestrial exemption will go away. Either that, or Comcast will force every provider to purchase the rights to the closest CSN regional sports network as part of the package with the other NBC stations. If either of those things happened at least you’d be able to obtain access to CSN.

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 24, 2011 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I get CSN on FiOS, but I get the DC CSN, which does me no good. Sometimes NHLN apparently thinks I get the Philadelphia CSN and blacks out my game.

It actually makes me miss the days before cable when every game was broadcast for free on “Philly 57.” Not that I’d have a chance of getting that here either, but if it was broadcast on TV for free, I’d have more ammo to argue for it being broadcast on the internet for free.

Ick. But you’re probably a nicer person than me, I’d be calling now to find out if I was in the blackout zone for tonight’s game and then demanding to know why and getting my complaint in early. I’m kind of a cranky person when it comes to the Flyers.

You can call and ask about that? I’m cranky when it comes to missing Flyers games too (which is why I might skip trivia at the bar tonight, because people there are going to want to watch the NCAA tourney), but I always figured I was just SOL.

I’d bet Carter is more hurt than they’re letting on. He looked like he jammed his hand/wrist pretty hard. Remember, Pronger was “fine” a couple days before he was confirmed out for 3-4 weeks, too. And I’d put my money on Pronger playing through a painful injury before I’d put the same wager on Carter…

No, not questioning his toughness. Didn’t mean to give that impression, though I can see why my post would have. I was just trying to say that the team is likely hiding a more serious injury, which I disagree with because I’d rather see him rest now than try to power thru it and then end up missing playoff time. What I was TRYING to say is that I’d bet the team would encourage Pronger to play thru a painful (yet playable) injury before they’d encourage the same from Carter with so little time remaining in the season, yet Pronger is sitting. Therefore, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Carter taking some time off before the playoffs start. Every long-term Flyer is tough. You have to be to play sustained hockey in Philly.

Why is the media so obsessed with naming a “playoff starter” and insisting that there’s a “competition” between Bob and Boucher? Everything Boucher says makes it clear that he wants to support Bob and help him learn and grow. He talks about them being a tandem and working together to help the team win. And everything Bob says makes it clear that he only wants the team to win, he doesn’t care who is in net or about his personal numbers. If him being in net makes the team win, fine. If him sitting on the bench makes the team win, fine. So unless they’re both spouting massive amounts of bullshit all season long (which I find hard to believe for whatever reason), there is no competition. We don’t need one starter. They are a good tandem. Drop it!

Because goalie controversy sells sells sells and it is easy to write just go back to stories over the last 10 years and copy / paste. The media doesn’t understand that Goaltenders don’t matter, zero cups for Miller, Lundquist, Luongo, they are not QBs in football or number 1 starters in baseball as long as you have a guy you doesn’t completely fall apart. Hockey is a the truest team game it takes team defense to win it all you can’t go in an expect your goalie to solely win you 4 straight 7 game series.

Can it happen yes it can (see Giguere) but do the Flyers need that to happen certainly not. They don’t need the goalie to overachieve and carry a weak lineup of muckers and grinders over better skiller superstar teams. The Flyers are not going to be a “cinderella” story. All the Flyers have to do is have one of their goalies not completely fall apart. What are the odds that both goalies who have been pretty solid this year completely shit the bed in the playoffs. Pretty small especially behind this defense. I have faith in Boosh if BOB fails, because If Leighton could do it anyone can.

by boknows71 on Mar 24, 2011 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

But why? What is different about the playoffs that compels a team that has rotated goalies somewhat evenly during the year to suddenly switch? The goalies on such a team are accustomed to the rotation. Is it because the team is facing the same opponent? Why wouldn’t that be an argument in the other direction?

Also, why would you condition your goalies, mentally and physically, to more or less trade games for six months and then tell one that he’s expected to play something like 25 high-intensity games in a row and the other to get used to the bench for eight weeks?

Mikefive and I were talking about this yesterday. The 1972 Boston Bruins are the only team in the last 40 years to have won the Cup with an even distribution of goalie time in the playoffs. But have any other teams or coaches systematically attempted to play two goalies and failed?

Is it just a handed-down truism? Are teams that play one goalie throughout the regular season more likely to win the Cup than teams that alternate and then change for the playoffs?

If a team has an obvious #1 goalie then there’s a good chance that goalie is superior and gives his team a better chance to win the Cup. But if an organization has failed to find a clear winner does it make sense to pretend it has?

Flyers remain the #1 team, and therefore it is the perceived job of the media to find the cracks in the armor, especially now as we move into the playoffs. It is very easy to bring up the age-old Flyers goaltending problem, so that is what they do. I tune out the media noise generally, but I do think Lavy has a tough decision at times deciding which of his tandem goalies will get the nod for that night’s game.

Interesting that as far as ‘dirty’ and ‘cheap’ teams go (by Chen’s definition) the Flyers only rank 12th on both lists. One could (almost) say that the statistics don’t support the common impression then, eh?

A couple of weeks ago when there was that ugly Penguins/Islanders game, the Pens did everything they could to try to blame the fact that they led the league in penalties afterwards on that game; but Puck Daddy called them out on it that they were at the top even if that game didn’t count.

Hahaha, I didn’t know PD did that. Awesome. Mario has been quite the hypocrite lately. Though he didn’t stand up for Cooke this time. Maybe he finally realized that it was making him look bad.

I don’t know if it was those exact words, but it was close. I’m trying to find it

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 24, 2011 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

The actual words I remembered actually came from the Yahoo Sports article not Puck Daddy original wording; but PD used the Yahoo article, pointed out the hypocrisy, and had written it’s own post a couple weeks earlier saying that the Penguin were already at the top.

The actual words I remembered from the Yahoo article were:

The problem is, you can’t take Friday night in a vacuum. Who led the league in fights entering Sunday’s games? The Penguins, with 61, according to hockeyfights.com. Who led the league in penalty minutes? The Penguins, with 1,101. Who led the league in majors? The Penguins, with 63. Who ranked second in game misconducts? The Penguins, with eight – two fewer than the first-place Islanders. Who was one of four teams with a match penalty? The Penguins.
So PD referenced it and alluded to it, but those exact words didn’t come from their writers. Sorry, my memory isn’t exactly dead on this morning.

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 24, 2011 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

No worries, it’s still pretty awesome. I’ve kinda lost interest in PD for a while, so I was surprised to see something like this coming from them.

But in the article Briere topped the list of individual players for cheating penalties… So Briere in the headline isn’t a random choice

Cooke in the headline would have been too obvious. He isn’t even #1 under dirty. A Penguins team picture would have been hilarious though.

But I’ll admit, there is a lot of perception that the Flyers are a dirty team, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the pic is to generate clicks from people expecting the “obvious answer,” even though it turns out to not actually be the answer.

I’m aware, but towards the end of the article they also basically make the argument that the “cheating” penalties aren’t as bad as the “dirty” penalties. And as a fan of another team, when you first open the article and see a Flyer right there, aren’t you going to think “well, of course the Flyers are dirty cheaters”. Even though they’re not all that close to the top in either category as a team.

by kazz on Mar 24, 2011 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I get that, and I realize there’s some team perception too. But a team photo would be a tough sell as a thumbnail, so they’re going to pick an individual. So looking at the two number one guys: Chris Neil, and Danny Briere; which one are more people going to recognize?

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 24, 2011 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

They also could have picked any player from either of the top two teams on the list. I mean, Matt Cooke plays for the “dirtiest” team. They obviously could have gone there. Steve Stamkos and Corey Perry are both on one list and their teams rank higher than the Flyers. I think there were a number of ways they could have gone, with Briere’s picture being one of them. I’m just not at all surprised that that was the one they chose.

Trying to regain the kid’s confidence. Not a bad thing, if he falters you have Boosh to be able to come in and do his thing.

Bob should be the #1 in the playoffs, purely because if he struggles you still have Boosh. If Boosh struggles, I’d rather not throw in a rookie goaltender into a game cold already down a decent amount of goals.

Like everyone has said, Tuesday’s game had a playoff feel to it, and if we went to a double OT we probably would’ve won. That is where we’d benefit from a Bob/Boosh tandem. Not vice versa.

Cause if Bob struggles like he did Tuesday, Boosh can easily pick up the reigns.

Going deep here: Rinaldo, plays with a reckless abandon, but not once did I see him attempt to instigate anything due to being hot headed. He did start a small scruff in front of Leighton when some Hershey players were swinging after the whistle, as he should. I do not remember if he was assessed any penalties, but we all know he takes them anyway. He plays with energy, but that is expected based on his skill set. Overall, he is a cheap version of Carbomb.

They designated his contract to start next year, 11-12. I’m glad they actually printed that, because it’s really hard to find that nugget of information for most contracts.

How does that work, if he’s joining the Phantoms? Will he be getting paid? Will he even be eligible when their season ends?

by Snevik on Mar 24, 2011 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

The PSD article said they weren’t sure if was going to the Phantoms for the rest of the year or not. I guess we’ll find out if/when he shows up?

by ohnickels on Mar 24, 2011 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

That means that he’s not under contract to play for any part of our organization this year because his contract starts next year. He can sign a separate tryout contract under which he can go play for the Phantoms, but I don’t know if he’s done that.

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 24, 2011 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I should really be reading everything McManus writes:

In perhaps the biggest news of the day, the Flyers signed another coveted college free agent, Matt Read of Bemidji St. Reportedly, it’s a one-way, multi-year NHL contract that begins next season. There is now word if he’ll immediately join the Phantoms on a tryout contract the way Harry Zolnierczyk and Oliver Lauridsen have done. Just because Read’s deal is one-way doesn’t mean he won’t be a Phantom next season. The Flyers will just have to pay is whole salary wherever he plays. They can afford it.

Lately the Flyers have, but not always. Try going back and finding that for people in the Powe/Nodl age range and let me know how it works out. It’s not easy, and when it’s signed this time of year they can choose which year the contract starts, and what choice they make starts the waiver calculation.

I agree. But if you try to go back now and take an entire team, like I have, and go research the dates everyone signed their contract and have to figure out what year it took effect, you might lose your mind (or wish you had). I feel the same way. I think I just can’t stand his tone in Catcher though, because in general, I find Salinger capable. Holden doesn’t seem like a real voice to me.

Rand has never written a word that suggested to me she had a grasp of the language.

by Snevik on Mar 24, 2011 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. A big part of my issue with Catcher is that youth seem to latch onto it as representative of them and their cause. I see them as failing to get the point of the book and misunderstanding that Holden was, in fact, the biggest poseur of them all. The irony is lost on them.

Rand is just a hack who’s obsessed with the male member.

Philosophical works are many things, but calling Ayn’s stuff pure philosophy is a disservice to those works. A thinly-veiled philosophical allegory, maybe, but I don’t find it neither thought-provoking at a philosophical level nor functional at the level of, you know, using words.

I don’t much like Ayn Rand.

To answer the title question, it’s about 30 miles from Miami of Bemidji.

Bob.

by The Dark on Mar 24, 2011 12:45 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

101 miles from Brainerd. 153 miles from Duluth. 113 miles from Grand Forks. 116 miles from International Falls. 150 miles from St Cloud. 227 miles from Minneapolis.

In other words, it’s not the end of the world, but you can see it from there.

by mtitanic on Mar 24, 2011 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

So it’s just about equidistant from Minneapolis and Winnipeg? Ooh fun.

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 24, 2011 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

True. It’s a scenic if tedious drive around that area. Not as isolated as the drive from Bemidji up to Baudette though.

That reminds me of a t-shirt my mom had when we lived in Edwards AFB in Cali.

I was about to get really defensive and upset that no one knows where Bemidji is, but then I realized that even though I have been there on vacation more than once, I still sometimes get it confused with Brainerd.

It’s just another oddly named town, like Acklocknayke or Pilaklakha.

Bemidji State is not far from the source of the MIssissippi River. You can stand at the outlet of a lake in Atasca State Park with one skate on the left bank of the Mississippi and another on the right.

More to the point – who the hell cares??? Can anyone find Hearst, ON, without using Google Maps (or equivalent)? NO – but we’re all sure happy one particular player started grillin’ cheese there. Hopefully this new kid can come even close to that kind of potential.

Glens Falls

Enjoy the city of Glens Falls! I am proud to have called it home for quite some time. If you’re looking for good eats, check out Davidson Brothers in downtown for local brewed beer and good sandwiches, or head over to The Black Watch for the best steak of your life. And enjoy the Civic Center- it is a unique experience!
