Not happy after last night’s performance. I hope Geoff and Eric can use some numbers magic to provide the needed positive outlook.
Sarauj, Latvija!
I’m afraid the numbers agree with your eyes — the Flyers really just haven’t been playing very well lately.
But I do have one trick up my sleeve still…
Phillies – Stop gettin hurt
Eagles – Greedy basterds
Sixers – Lolz basketball
Ummm….the Nintendo 3DS is pretty neat. Also, ummm….I got nothing

The soccer thing for me is that it takes great stamina and you obviously have to be in great shape to play. So I respect the athleticism but the sport is drab. There is no excitement what so ever and the crying, whining and diving is pathetic. Down right embarrassing. I view soccer as more of an activity rather then a sport.

Watch Rugby, its much-much better. Real men, huge amount of athleticism, not drab, although the scrum can be a pain and its one of the toughest team sports around.

It’s very cool. I wasn’t brought up around it at all so I don’t have much exposure to it. But you have to be a bad ass to play. Being as I am a little guy other then the gut I couldn’t survive. I played football as a kid but soon found out I wasn’t big enough to compete and hockey took over. The sport I wish I had played is lacrosse. I tried it in college with a couple guys I met and the agility is similar and the physicality is great. Funny story is when I went to college I met a couple lax guys and they said come out an give it a try. So I did but no one told me you were allowed to check with he stick. During my first game play a guy slashed me around the forearm and I dropped the mitts and the bucket and prepared for the obvious to me ensuing fight. I took a ribbing for that with those guys for the remainder of the semester.

Lol. I watched Lacrosse when i was in America and it looked pretty good tbh.
I played rugby a little when i was younger but like you I’m not the biggest guy and only ever played no.9. If you want to watch the best rugby has to offer then watch ‘Super 15’ its has some awesome running rugby. Its nice to know some americans and canadiens follow rugby.

Which is why 7’s SUCKS.

6 Nations, and no they won the first 4 games then got trounced by the Irish-in-Ireland-in the final game. We still won the overall tournament but it was a humbling defeat. Much more work is to be done if we’re going to compete with the likes of New Zealand.

Duh – my bad. I wonder what the seventh nation would be?

I’m confused. I went to the article on scoring effects and clicked on the link entitled Corsi Percentages vs.Game State. It seemed more about Fenwick numbers and scoring effects.
Just be happy you weren’t Rick-Rolled.

Ok so I didn’t see anything in the Rinaldo to bring about a suspension but the replay was crappy, did he leave his feet perhaps?
However, I am disgusted to see him throwing punches to a guy who was down on the ice and against the boards…and he continued to throw punches, or at minimum one punch when they both got up and his opponent was tied up by the ref.
I hope Rinaldo never sees the ice for the Flyers because if he does, he is a walking or more accurately a skating disaster.

Last nights defeat makes the tuesday game against Pittsburgh really important. Plus it would be nice to beat someone currently sitting in a playoff spot.
Interesting to see how many points we get from the next 5 games!
Powe!, right in the kisser!
Anything less then an old fashion beat down of the pens will be more of a disappointment. Because after the last week of crap if these guys can’t get totally pissed off and Lay someone a beaten they are cooked.

This games is going to need a MIke Richards fight off the opening faceoff. Time for Richie to step up and get this team into the games early.
I agree, when he does something to fire the team up they play very well and win. I want to see the team turn on the playoff mentality now! No way they can tire themselves out by the time the playoffs start. If anything, when Pronger comes back he will light a fire underneath everybody’s ass.

Magic Numbers
With 7 games left the magic number over both Washington and Pittsburgh is 12 PTS. Any combination of Flyers points earned and Pittsburgh/Washington points unearned and the division and conference is ours.
Tomorrows game is a 4 point game.
With Pittsburgh winning their last 4 games in the god damn shootout I am really really hate the Bettman point.
Wouldn’t the magic number for the Caps be 13? I don’t think we can assume we’ll win the tiebreaker when they are only 2 ROWs behind.
With 6 games to play the Pens and Caps games can only reach 110 point maximum. With 100 pts and 7 games to play the Flyers technically only need 11 points to win solely by point total.
So we were both wrong the magic number is only 11.
This from Bill Meltzer today. This part of the game concerned me, and even when they did not turn the puck over and managed to get into the Bruins zone, it appeared that they were quickly smothered and could never set up. That is playoff style defensive hockey and I certainly hope we find a way to flip the switch soon to deal with it.
The Flyers seemed to be starting up ice all night from deep in their own end, having to travel 200 feet. Meanwhile, how many times did the Bruins take over possession anywhere from the offensive zone circles to the defensive blueline? That forced the Flyers to have to expend a lot of energy defensively.
Sarauj, Latvija!
It all stems from the transition game, if you ask me. The fanciness at center ice and at the blueline, and even at the top of the offensive zone. That’s the “lazy hockey” thing. They don’t appear to be willing to do the work down low lately. They’re not getting pucks deep and forcing the other team to go the 200 feet.
Of course, the lazy turnovers at the blueline and the shitty breakout doesn’t help either.

This is exactly what I’ve seen. They play that made them so successful, the deep puck, aggressive forecheck, and winning board battles has given way to cute little moves at the blue line or terribly BAD passes through 3-4 defenders (how many times did you see that last night?).
Last night’s game is typical of what’s coming in the playoffs. Is it too much to hope they wake up and start playing the tough hockey they need play in order to win? This is the final stretch where we were hoping they’d snap out of it, and well… They haven’t.

For a while I thought that was the reason Lavvy doesn’t pay Zherdev. But he’d have to bench half the team for doing it now.

Vancouver article
Nice article but they forgot to mention playing in the worst division in the league also helps out a lot too when in comes to goal differential and point total, see the Washington Capitals 2006-2009.
So what you’re saying is do this to have the best team in hockey…
1. Get the 2nd and 3rd overall picks to draft a pair of super twins.
2. Get the 4th overall to get the top goalie in hockey.
3. Build around that…

The Canucks didn’t draft Luongo. And it took them 10 years to build a team around the Sedins, so… I think there’s more to a hockey team than 3 players.

Vancouver is 11-5-3 against the Central, 12-5-2 against the Pacific, and 16-2-2 against the Northwest. They are good against a very deep Western Conference, even if you want to discredit their success due to a weak division.
The Capitals of 09-10 were 14-3-3 against the Atlantic last year, 11-4-5 against the Northeast, and 19-3-2 against the Southeast. They were really good last year, regardless of their weak division.

It does help, though. The Canucks are still probably the most talented team in the league, but that division bottoms out—especially now that the Wild have stopped playing above their talent.
The division matter when it comes down to 6 points that determine the Presidents trophy winners from the second place team. And it also helps your differential when you have offensively challenged MINN and EDM in your division. The 2 lowest scoring teams in the WEST and the two worst goal differentials in the NHL.
In the ATL division NYR, PITT, and the ISLE are all in the top 8 in Goals For. And as bad as the Islanders are their goal differential of -31 is almost twice as a good as Edmonton and Colorado’s -69 and -55.
I am not completely righting off the VAN but division does make a difference for those types of team accomplishments.
The numbers on Gillies are just……I don’t know what to say. Incredible. I’ve come to the conclusion that the only reason the Isles play him at all is to lure even more idiot fans to the arena thinking “He must be Clark’s kid.”, though he’s no relation. That, and the fights they are guaranteed to see.
I’m starting to feel concerned about Geoff’s influence on me. For the first time every single item in the fly-by I’ve already seen and read. I suppose when I go to my kid’s school functions now I’ll be checking out hot moms or something.
I had a thought today. I would rather lose the one seed (but not the division) than have the Blackhawks make the playoffs. This is probably only me, right?
I would love to have the Flames make it over the Blackhawks, somehow.

And I agree with you. I want the Flyers to win the division so they don’t have to open against Tampa. If the Flyers manage to make the playoffs as the 2 seed, and get to the conference finals against 1-seeded whomever, I’m not uncomfortable with the Flyers opening on the road. They are more efficient when they play on the road. They play a simpler game, which only helps in the playoffs.

Lots of Days Off
I hope Laviolette gives the Flyers as many days off as possible between now and the end of the season.
I was at the game last night and, as the game wore on, they started making stupid, fatigue-related mistakes. When your body isn’t fresh, your mind isn’t sharp, and you do stupid things. Last night was the fourth game in six days for the Flyers, and you could tell. Maybe – had this stretch occurred earlier in the season – they’d have had more “legs” than they had last night.
I’m not excusing the loss or whatever, but I am being realistic. By the end of the game they had nothing left in the tank. As my friend said, “They’re playing like a team who played last night.” The mistakes and indecisiveness were indicative of that. I thought Giroux in particular made a lot of bad decisions. It was the worst I’ve seen him play in a while. Maybe he should try dumping the puck sometimes? Just a thought.
Starting tomorrow, the Flyers have three games in four days. Rest them Lavy, please.

I really loathe the schedule-makers. For weeks earlier in the season it seemed like the Flyers played a game a week, and now it’s 7 games in 11 days. It’s ri-GD-diculous.
Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.
You would think they could have figured out a way to make everyone’s schedule more evenly distributed by now, but I guess not. I’m sure every team has stretches like that, where they don’t play for a week and then play nine games in fifteen days. Still though, it’s not good.

I’ve always thought it’s intentional. I wondered if the frantic pace of the schedule during the last week of the season was to try to keep hockey’s profile up so they don’t lose as many people to baseball. But that’s just my totally random speculation.
by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 28, 2011 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, if it’s purposeful, they’re even dumber than I thought. Yes, let’s tire out the really good teams so they save their absolute worst hockey for the pinnacle of your sport, the playoffs.
/slight hyperbole, but you get my drift
Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.
Oh I agree that it’s not necessarily a smart idea for the players or the game itself. For me I’m wondering about the attention. Spring training is on the news every night even if nothing happens; while I feel like hockey in some markets might only get mentioned during a game. The media is already looking at baseball, and I think that if there wasn’t enough hockey to keep them busy, hockey would be pushed even further back out of sight.

Everyone seems to forget that most of the arenas aren’t just for hockey.
They have the NBA, Lacrosse, and Arena Football games plus whatever the hell else they use them for.
I know this, but who cares about those other sports? /just kidding

Other folks I work with are well aware of my Philly fandom and take particular delight in needling me with comments like, “Are you going to come to the game to cheer for the Mets?” etc. Sorry, can’t do it.

I guess going to watch a team I don’t like just isn’t worth it to me—if they were playing the Flyers, maybe—but then it would be awkward. I’ve got a kid and a full plate, so unless it’s really worthwhile, I’m not going.
