A couple of interesting games last night. Sabres beat the Rangers and, for now at least, flipped the current standings in terms of the 7th and 8th seeds in the East. And how about that 10-3 blowout by the Blues over the Red Wings? Interestingly, even with 10 goals, no one on the Blues got a hat trick.
Sarauj, Latvija!
I thought I was also interestng to see that they had 8 different players register a goal.

Anaheim looks interesting too. Emery is playing well, their first line is dominant and Selanne is playing very well. They had a good, tough road win in Chicago last weekend. Their schedule is tough the rest of the way (all against playoff teams, I think) but they look tough. With Nashville, Anaheim and Chicago in the bottom half of that bracket the first round series out West should be great.

I agree with the Anaheim assessment. Hell, there’s a chance they get the 4-seed.

I never quite understood the purpose of the banner nights? What was the significance of having these honorary nights this particular year? Not that I care because I love Bill Barber, but just curious.
It would be cool if Primeau was in the building tonight. They could do a little Shakespearean thing with Primeau pretending to hand him the banner and coming up from behind Barber and stabbing him in the back. Barber can hit the ice and exclaim, “Et tu, Primeau?” Relax people these are jokes.
Just Call Me "M"!
It has to do with the demolition of the Spectrum, and now the team has all these old banners and nowhere to put them, so they made ceremonies to present them to the guys with retired numbers.
I really don’t mind Richards being surly to the media or anybody else for that matter. I know this might offend but the nature of the media in too many cases is to poke, prod and pry. Why is it surprising during a slump a guy is not happy? Why does he have to wear a different face off the ice. This goes for all athletes and how people expect them to be violent, aggressive, intense and even criminal on the playing field, but off the field they want guys to be different.
Just Call Me "M"!
Exactly…. especially with today’s 24/7 media where reporters always need to have a story even if it’s about the smallest/most unimportant detail of the game. There are many players who don’t like talking to the media because it can be a distraction, in a sense, to them. Richards is spotlighted because he’s the captain and the media thinks that he should be the one talking about the team, but in reality, he just wants to play.
I agree, I don’t mind Richards not talking to the media because he’s more focused on the task at hand.
Am I the only one who thinks it’s kind of funny? They ask him the same questions game after game. Maybe if he started giving one word answers they’d get the hint? Or maybe answering a question with a question? Or going Zen on them?
“What do you think of the power play chances tonight?”
“The river flows around the rock. But does the swallow sing?”

Not really. For some reason I started calling him “Ibrahim iTuñez.”

Well, David Bell was an extremely expensive version of Nunez, so that’s why—but I think if Bell was getting paid a lot less and not blocking Polly from become our everyday 3B back then, we would have been cooler with him. (remember the lie the Phillies told us that Polly couldn’t play 3B? Yeah, so much for that)
Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.
But Polly’s trade gave us Chase Utley at second base. We were also afforded the opportunity to learn from Ugueth Urbina, who taught us that the best way to find out if anything’s been stolen from you is to use machetes and gasoline.

Hey I stumbled across this song yesterday and thought you’d appreciate it, in particular as you are a one man band uber musician much like Helios Creed who wrote this song. You have pretty big ears so you might have heard it already. It’s from a pretty hard to find album so it’s extra crispy hipstery which the 1978 relaese date only attests to. I still haven’t hooked up my sound system since moving so I was totally giddy to have found this little gem on the youtube. Just has so much effin’ scoot. Also, how was Sebadoh?
Helios Creed is farkin’ bananas. I used to listen to early Chrome quite often back in college, when I used to have an experimental/electronic/space rock radio show. Too many future ghosts…

See. Why am I not suprised. Awesome. We rule. Maybe you know the answer to this. A buddy of mine (actually the guy who introduced me to Chrome) said one of either Creed or Damon Edge suffered horribly from stage freight at the time and that Chrome was much more a studio act as a result. Truth or just rumor.
Seeing as how Creed still tours sporadically, and given how Edge had his personal demons, I’d be more inclined to think it was Edge. I have no idea, though.

Speaking of Edge, I was never really into the Chrome stuff after Edge relocated them to France. I have Into The Eyes of the Zombie King on CD and Another World on vinyl, as far as that period is concerned. Maybe I’ll revisit it.

Oh, and Sebadoh was brilliant. It felt a lot more natural – and had a lot more momentum – than the 2007 tour. Then, you could still feel some of the awkwardness with Gaffney being back in the picture, though it was awesome to hear all those songs from III and Bubble and Scrape.
Friday’s show was balls-to-the-wall rawk. Since they were touring for the eventual re-issues of Bakesale and Harmacy, the bulk of the material came from those two albums. They did throw in a couple of hardcore songs for old-times’ sake, as well as some older songs like “Sister” and “Brand New Love.” I even got to be a dorky fan and buy a t-shirt directly from Lou Barlow afterward.

So just because the local media was spoiled with the likes of Keith Primeau as a captain and Eric Desjardins as a captain of the Flyers, doesn’t mean that’s how it always has to be.
Amen.
Now let’s move on.
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
Move on is a concept the local sports media is very unfamiliar with as we continue to see the same stories over and over and over and over again. Goalie controversy, Richards and the media, partying by players, with every loss the Flyers are slumping into the playoffs and every win they are heading with on fire and determination to reach the pinnacle of glory.
The media is over-reactionary and bio-polar.
I seem to remember Primeau being pretty gruff with reporters. Is this revisionist history?
Also:
As he goes, often so go the Flyers. It’s not a crazy stat to elaborate that when Richards scores a goal this season, the Flyers are 15-0-1.
Groan.
Whereas they are only 7-6 (ok, 7-3-3, but OTL is still a loss) when Zherdev scores. That’s probably why they don’t play him, because his goals clearly don’t help the team — they do better when he doesn’t score.
They’re 13-3 (ok, 13-2-1) when JVR scores. So the team must key on him almost as much as they key on Richards. Maybe he’s the captain of the future?
They are 10-0-5 when Leino scores. When he’s on, the team gets so energized that they dominate regulation, but then by overtime they’re complacent and just waiting for him to score the GWG, and it hurts them badly.
They are 18-1-4 when Giroux scores, with the regulation loss coming on a GWG in the last two minutes. So Giroux is basically the same player as Leino.
For Zherdev, are those OTL, or SOL? Because SOL mean nothing, OTL are meaningful.
Defending Carter until 2021...
No idea. And I would suggest that in this context, OTL, regulation L, and regulation W are just as meaningless as SOL.
Most of us have agreed that it’s goofy to judge goalies by the team’s record. It’s even goofier to judge players by the team’s record in the handful of games where they scored.
Goofy is definitely a polite way to put it.

Being left handed, I enjoyed the Behind the Net article because I notice the left handed players vs. right handed players when watching the game. It’s interesting that it’s almost the same percentage of forwards to defensemen. When I watch a game, I tend to notice that more defensemen are left handed, but this proved me wrong.
I liked that one too. Whenever I’d play hockey with kids on my street or other places, I noticed that a lot more of them are right handed shots, which never made sense to me because in most pro hockey there are more lefties. People would always ask me if I was left handed, and I’d say “no, this is just more comfortable and I can control the puck better”

When I was running a public access wood shop, I came to understand why Ned Flanders opened the Leftorium. So many dangerous shop tools – table saws, jointers, shapers – shit that could remove fingers in less than a second, are designed for right handed people. I always made it a point in my safety briefings for new club members to find out their handedness and adjust accordingly. However I also found that there are lefties who, borne out of necessity I assume, develop ambidexterity.
I am left handed and I have to use scissors with my right hand. My left hand just won’t do it, I don’t understand it but I just can’t make it work.

I can only use my left hand when I use scissors. But yes, I’m always adjusting to my left handedness. I’ve taught myself my own way of doing things because I’m so left hand dominant. But my dad always told me that lefties have the advantage in sports, so I appreciate that I’m naturally left handed.
I once had to play a softball tournament with a right handed glove. They put me at second base.

I must have missed whatever banter there was about the Flyers signing Da Costa. I long considered such an idea to be a non-starter because of the contract numbers being way too costly, what w/ bonuses counting against the cap in the future. Besides, the kid wants to play in the NHL, not work his way up through the minors.

And I piss off Geoff so much that he stops talking…I feel like all of BSH would be interested to know what it takes to get Geoff to stop talking to you…I previously thought it was impossible.

I would like to join in thanking SanFilippo. Like many people around here I have been defending Richards as Captain since the Pronger was acquired. A captains sole responsibility is to his teammates. He doesn’t owe the fans or the media anything extra because he wheres the C. Captain is not a public office he is not elected by the people or the media so who gives a fuck what he has to say or not say or how he says it.
Wait, Richie plays too? I thought he was just the team's PR guy. weird.

I guess Travis could answer this: Why do reporters who know that Richie is not going to give them what they want to hear, keep asking questions? Also why do they get so offended when he blows them off when they know he is going to do that anyway?

Okay so, some lively banter about that BtN artricle would be greatly appreciated because now I’m really effing confused. Banter on.
Which one? I’m assuming you mean the scoring chances one? If so, what are you confused about?

Overall, it seems strange that these two things can co-exist – chances have the same distribution as regular shots, but when they’re far away from the net, they’re much more likely to go in. Clearly there’s room for more exploration of the data here.
That just seems counter -intuitive to me. I would think the closer to the goal, the easier it is to score.
Maybe it’s the speed of the shot? Perhaps the further away from the goal, the more time and room you have for a slap shot.
I didn’t read the article, but reading that quote, I think there is a higher chance because the goalie might lose track of the puck if it’s shot from farther away? But then that doesn’t make sense because if a player crashes the net, then the same theory could be applied? Also, the farther away from the goal, a one timer might be more likely which yes, goes towards your idea of the speed of the shot. I wonder what the stat is for goals scored from the point vs. crashing the net/being closer?
What it’s saying is that a shot close to the net is likely considered a scoring chance, so you won’t see a big separation in shots versus scoring chances, or shooting % between them. However, the farther away from the goal you move, less shots are considered scoring chances, and the scoring chances from farther out (shots with screens or with significant puck movement before the shot) have a much higher likelihood of being a goal than total shots from farther out.
Basically a shot from in close is likely a scoring chance, so the shooting % will be almost the same. A shot from the blue line is not likely a scoring chance.

Is it weird that there’s no rebound bump for the area 1 foot around the crease (i.e. not the higher end of the home plate)? For some reason, I expected it would start high, dip a bit, and even out.
I just tried to describe a line with words, so tell me if that didn’t work.
I don’t see anything at 1 foot. And also, at that point it’s tough to get the puck up, or you might be at a horrible angle, so I don’t necessarily think there has to be a peak there.

There is ALOT of scorer error when it comes to shot distances. I’ve seen wraparounds credited as a 7-10 ft shot so many times I can’t count. A lack of 1-ft shots is not that surprising.

Well played sir.
But yes, shot distance is a league-wide issue, from what I’ve seen. Some are better than others, obviously. We’re clearly the worst.

However, it’s hard not to feel good for Ray Emery, who is now 6-0-0 since returning to the NHL. That’s great for him.

haha, I’m not copying and pasting. But yeah, at this point…

The NBA…oh, the NBA. Anyone else think this is about gambling? I’m sure Stern will sweep it under the carpet, as will ESPN. Of course, had this happened in Philly ESPN would have reported “DERANGED PHILLY FAN ATTACKS VISITING NBA OFFICIAL”

Playoff Watch
Eliminated: NYI, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado, Edmonton
Teams that could be eliminated tonight: Atlanta (anything but a win), Columbus (anything but a win)
Teams that can clinch tonight: Tampa Bay —playoff spot (Win against Pittsburgh), Boston—Northeast division (Win against Toronto)
Magic numbers, Eastern Conference: Flyers, Eastern Conference – 8; Flyers, Atlantic Division – 6; Washington, Southeast Division – 7; Bruins, Northeast Divsion – 2; Canadiens, playoff spot – 5; Sabres, playoff spot – 8; Rangers, playoff spot – 8.
Magic numbers, Western Conference: Red Wings, Central Division – 5; Sharks, Pacific Division – 10; Red Wings, playoff spot – 4, Sharks, playoff spot – 5, Coyotes, playoff spot – 6; Kings, playoff spot – 7; Ducks, playoff spot – 9; Predators, playoff spot – 9; Blackhawks, playoff spot – 12.
I think these are true. Doing this is already tiresome.
I think the only wrong ones are Phoenix and Nashville.
Six points gets PHX to 101, which is Dallas’ max. They’d need 102 to clinch without tiebreak, so their number should be 7. Same for Nashville. Nine points gets them to 101, they need to get to 102.
