Who was he even aiming for? The only person I saw behind the linesman was a Shark. Haha. At least they didn’t blow up about it and suspend him indefinitely or anything. Good to see the officials be empathetic to a guy in a fight.

Remember when Downie slashed a ref a couple weeks after he was traded to Tampa in the AHL? Hahaha good memories.

OT, but Caps had a nice win over their division rival, Tampa Bay, last night. Semin reminds me so much of Zherdev, or perhaps vice versa, both in goal scoring abilities and personality.

I’ll take it as easy as possible, thanks. Everyone else being bad helps the Flyers win, so that’s what I want.

Well, we’ve had more trouble beating TB this season, so the positive would be that they are trending downward at the moment based on their record over their last 10 games.

Gormley's Fix
while it’s no time to panic, it is time to make a few changes…

1. Bench Leino;
2. Break up the Briere line;
3. Reduce Giroux’s ice time;
4. Rest O’Donnell (okay this makes sense)

Thank god this guy isn’t coaching the team.

by sophiejo on Mar 8, 2011 8:27 AM EST up reply actions

Why are you so opposed to it? Leino hasn’t done a whole lot offensively save for the Carolina game and his defense is just as poor as Zherdev. He also turns the puck over more than anyone I have ever seen.

I am not saying I advocate for him being benched, but if you are going to hold Z accountable then you should have the same policy regardless of the name. However the chief difference I guess is Z and Leino’s work ethic in practice.

Yeah, but if it turns Leino around and makes him fight for his ice time again, the drop off in talent in the short term could yield a higher reward.

You put someone else with Hartnell and Briere. They have enough talent to move someone in to the scoring line not named Carbomb.

by DLJr on Mar 8, 2011 9:12 AM EST up reply actions

I actually didn’t mean his place on the line so much as his place in the line-up. If you take Leino out it means Shelley and Carbomb have to play at the same time, no? Unless I’m forgetting someone. I just don’t like those two on the roster with someone like Leino benched.

Assuming everybody else is healthy, we could do bench Leino and only have to play Carcillo or Shelley, not both… We can always play Z.

Richards, Nodl, Versteeg, Giroux, Carter, JVR, Briere, Hartnell, Z, Powe, Betts is 11.

by DLJr on Mar 8, 2011 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

Doesn’t change it all that much:

Richards: one turnover every 36 minutes
Hartnell: one turnover every 36 minutes
Leino: one turnover every 38 minutes
Carter: one turnover every 46 minutes
Giroux: one turnover every 48 minutes

What it does do is bump Zherdev’s turnover per 28 minutes to the top of the list.

Leino hasn’t looked himself, and it was especially noticeable against the Rags on Sunday.

A few months ago, Leino was incredibly hard to knock off the puck. Now other teams are managing to do it with ease, and he isn’t fighting to keep it. Combine that with being one of the players who came out and said “We’re having trouble getting up for the games”, and benching Leino is not the worst idea. Leino played great when he was fighting for ice time, but he certainly doesn’t have that level of motivation right now.

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 8, 2011 8:49 AM EST up reply actions

Hopefully this slump will only help the team in the long run, just like the mid-season troubles helped the team when they were 0-3 against Boston last year.

Winning isn’t easy in the professional game(especially in a salary cap era) and this team has just had a reminder of that.

I think the team responds tonight with a narrow win over Edmonton tonight and then begins to build momentum from there.

Perhaps technically accurate, but missing the playoffs each season since trading Pronger doesn’t seem like a notable improvement.

What is amazing is that St.Louis only made the playoffs once since Pronger was traded, and that was 2 years ago and they were swept. Anaheim did not make the playoffs in the post year Post Pronger despite making it all 3 years he was there. St. Louis isn’t making the playoffs this year. Anaheim could.

It just seemed to not imply any talent…show a video of Gagne getting stoned on a wide open one timer, then that statement…just seemed to completely conflicting.

So I took it as either conflicting, or he had no idea what he implied to people with his first post.

Turns out it was the latter.

You are taking something that is clearly a sore subject and spinning it for whatever reason.

I never said I wouldn’t date a blonde or a red head or a bald woman. I said I prefer brunettes. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t look at or date someone else.

I also never once said that I wouldn’t date someone who dyed their hair. I said the following:

Of course, you never really know what a womans true hair color is these days.

Which is pretty much true, you never do unless you ask. Just because someone’s hair is one color today doesn’t mean that is indeed their true hail color, thanks to the whole concept of dying hair.

You realize Mens Rea only matters depending on the crime, right?

And there are different standards by which culpability is determined. Like purposefully, knowingly, recklessly, and negligently.

So you can claim innocence because you lacked the requisite mens rea for a purposeful crime, but you’re guilty of at least reckless and negligently, if not also knowingly.

It’s a pretty bold statement because I firmly believe in it. It’s a problem I have with many engineers and other individuals who consider themselves somehow better than me because of their major. Those disciplines tell you how to do something, while the Liberal Arts disciplines tell you IF you should do it.

That’s fine, but that statement makes you come off as foolishly idealistic, like a degree gives those people the power to not succumb to anything other than what they were taught. And we have to remember that what we are all taught, when it comes to matters that aren’t bound by the laws physics, history and equations, isn’t the only answer.

Right now, I’m taking a course that has a lot to do with current events in the Middle East and it’s definitely a change from how I look at things scientifically.

Well the fact that your all ACCUSING ME OF SOMETHING .. that in your opinion is implied criminal, yes thats why I brought this up to show that I did not intend to upset the natives with the fact that Gagne was the person who was robbed by the goalie. Heck if it was Iginla or if it was Richards or if it was Crosby I would have said the same thing “WOW what a save !” and one I like, one I love, and one I hate.

Like my Criminology professor said Dr Personeus said in Germany, if you have a mental act of committing a crime but you dont commit it, your not guilty – we all dream of choking some people out – (like you or I are probably thinking of right now).

If you have the Actus Reas or the act of Committing a Crime but not the Mens Rea, you dont have a crime. For instance – if a man intentionally shoots a gun straight up in the air on New Years Day and the bullet comes down and paralyzes someone, but his intention was to celebrate new years, then you dont have murder, you have negligence and discharging a loaded weapon offense. Its stupid but its not a crime. He could be held Civilly in a civil court but not much criminally.

You were stating ..

When everybody takes your comment the same way, I’m pretty sure it’s time to get your heels out of the sand and admit that you took a stab.

Which would imply that I had the Mental act or mens rea to Laugh at Gagne or DIss Gagne. .. noooooo.

then you claim…

you’re guilty of at least reckless and negligently, if not also knowingly.

also not true.

and like i said above. it was a great play, thats why it was the play of the day on NHL Network, .. its worthy of its talent and thats all I implied..

We can go all day on this if you want .. or at least till I have to go to work.

but there was no intention. YOU ALL TOOK IT THE WRONG WAY. PERIOD.

But this is a case of “Think before you speak/type.” Sometimes things look and sound completely different to the general populace from how they look and sound in your head. I honestly believe that you didn’t mean it to be a jab at Gagne. It just read the wrong way. It is a great save. If your title had been “AMAZING SAVE!” or something to that effect, this would have all been avoided.

Oh, and the follow up comment that not getting the goal was “typical gagne” didn’t help you either. But I can see how a slight wording change could have fixed that too.

I enjoy Katchis’ enthusiasm for the sport. However I remember her saying something that as a Flyers fan I couldn’t disagree with anymore. It went along the lines of “I play for the name on the back, not the crest on your chest”. After that, I just accepted that we have differing opinions

For me there are certain players that transcend the laundry. Not in that I would root for them above the Flyers but that I’ll root for them even when not rooting for the laundry. Like Gagne, Recchi, formerly Prospal, Upshall and Umberger. I’ll root for all those guys to do well but not necessarily their teams.

I’m fine thinking about it, and it doesn’t bother me in the least. It can seem ridiculous, but there are certain pillars in Flyers history that will always be Flyers, and their careers in other places don’t really matter. Hextall will always be a Flyer, regardless of his time with NYI or the Nordiques.

The transience doesn’t matter to me, because if they’re important enough, then their careers in other places don’t really matter, and are negligible

Oh… First of all, I don’t really understand where this come from. I mean… what did I do or say that brought this comment of yours? I’m not mad, just surprised. Anyway… let me explain myself and how this whole Gagne/Flyers thing is.

I got to hockey while watching the Czech national team play at the Olympics in Nagano in 1998. I was 11 and knew nothing about the sport, about the Czech Extraliga, about the NHL… simply nothing. The Olympics got my attention and after few years of watching just the Czech national team I began discovering also other teams and of course the leagues. The team in Zlin (where I was born and live my whole life) has been there for over 80 years now and they are a big part of the city culture. Kind of like Flyers are part of Philadelphia. So once I started to understand the sport a bit more I became a fan. My “relationship” with my hometown team is probably the closest to your “relationship” with the Flyers. I have a strong bound to them. Now, after many seasons, I am a member of the official fanclub, I own season ticket, I have my own jersey, I travel to see the guys on the road and there is no one I would put in front of them. Nothing I would put in front of blue and yellow. I may like Martin Straka who plays in Plzen and cheere on them… but never when they play my team.

With internet and basically just the communication with the States/Canada becoming easier my attention also went overseas. My “first team” were actually the Anaheim Ducks but that was nothing “serious”. It was during the time when I didn’t really follow the NHL much and I would only play for the Ducks on NHL99. To tell you when exactly I became a Lightning fan is really difficult but with a rough guess it was probably sometime during the ‘01/’02 season. At that time, I knew very few players so I didn’t become the Lightning fan because of St.Louis, or Lecavalier, or Richards… no. I became a fan because my father brought me a Lightning hat from Tampa. Silly, eh? But 100% true. My logic was “well, you’re wearing their hat, you might want to find out more about them”. So I did. And once I started, I never stopped. I never really intent to become a die-hard fan of any of the NHL teams, I never had an intent to really follow the league on daily basis, to discuss with people on the internet, to write, to watch games during nights, to buy jerseys… This wasn’t planned, also because I didn’t know English back then yet. So yeah… that’s how I became a Lightning fan. Where’s the Gagne part?

If I’m not mistaken I first noticed Gagne in the ‘02 Olympics in Salt Lake. I was like, "oh, dude’s got a pretty name". But that was about it at first. When I started to follow the Lightning more closely I could not miss other players in the league, obviously. And I could not miss Gagne. There was this kind of a moment of “oh hey… I remember you”. And ever since then it was developing to what I feel about him now. It wasn’t like I would sit in my room and suddenly was like “this Gagne guy… I should probably start going crazy over him, sounds like fun.” Definitely not. It was a long process. And the more I liked Gagne, the more interested I was in a team he plays for. I used to think that it’s wrong to have favorite players on different teams than your favorite one so I was kinda keeping it secret that besides the Lightning I’m also cheering for this guy with #12 on his back, wearing orange and black.

In the past few years the Lightning were a huge frustration. Simon and the Flyers were saving the day. You can call me whatever, a bandwagoner if you’d like, but when the Lightning were to miss playoffs again in ‘08-’09 season I said to myself “screw it, i love simon, i like the flyers, i’m hopping on the bandwagon”. (I didn’t stop cheering for the Lightning though) Some Flyers fans who I met on the NHL Connect were an influence too. They thought me a lot about the Flyers. A year later I joined BSH and it was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. I’ve met some amazing people, I learned so freaking much about the Flyers, about the game… Through the last two seasons I really loved the Flyers, the Lightning-Flyers games were amazing…. win/win situations for me because I really loved both teams, genuinely.

Last year playoffs… that was something I will never forget, I thought that I made another strong bound with another team. But that was quickly shred apart with Simon being traded away. Last summer showed me that what I thought to be strong feelings about a team, were mainly strong feelings about Gagne. I’m saying “mainly” and not “completely” because there’s still some place in my heart for the Flyers. There really is. I might not like Meszaros, Zherdev… I might hate Holmgren but there’s still something about this team that makes me love it, even with Gagne not being part of it.

I think I’m kind of rambling right now so I’m going to try to put it in a (coherent) nutshell:

The teams I feel strongest about are my local team and the Lightning. You could say that with these teams I really do put the crest before the name. I do care which players wear “my” colors and I like some more than the others but as long as they do their job and bring wins I’m happy.

Simon Gagne is a guy who brought me to the Flyers. Even thought I will never like them as much as I like the teams mentioned above I really do love them. The times I spent with them left a mark on me and I simply can’t stop following and supporting them. Yes, the greatest moments were when Simon was still there but after what I’ve experienced with this team I can’t abandon them.

BTW:

But to come to a board and roll your eyes when people aren’t in the similar situations as you, I don’t quite get it.

I don’t understand this one bit. Roll my eyes? When?

And also thanks to those who stood up for me. Thank you guys, really appreciate it.

It’s different for international fans, as we have no affiliation to the city. I’m a Flyers fan because Desjardins has a funny last name and Lindros looked like he was a good player.

Gagne had been my favourite for years, and was the only reason I really followed the Flyers again after the lockout. If it hadn’t been for BSH and talking about other players a lot, I probably wouldn’t have been a Flyers fan after that trade.

This probably sounds strange to many people, but I can’t quite put into words what I mean. Basically, Gagne was the Flyers to me for so long, that if it wasn’t for BSH helping me become a better fan, I may have become a Tampa fan.

At the risk of being "On Topic" for a change

Last week after the Toronto loss, I predicted a 5-game losing streak because:

  • The Flyers had already lost to two teams they had previously gone unbeaten against for the year (Ottawa and Toronto)
  • They had two more games coming up against similar opponents (Buffalo and New York)
  • They then played Edmonton, who they “never seem to beat.”

Recently, I changed my tack and predicted a 4-game losing streak instead of a 5-gamer, because I actually bothered to look up how long it’s been since the Flyers beat Edmonton.

You’d have to go back to the days when Uncle Unibrow was our surprising rookie netminder, and our top line was Primeau-Recchi-Gagne. That’s right, the 2000-01 season.

  • Last win vs. Edmonton: March 19, 2001. Flyers 4 @ Edmonton 2.
  • Last HOME win vs. Edmonton: November 9, 2000. Edmonton 0 @ Flyers 2.

Source.

So I guess my questions are:

  • The Flyers are like totally due to beat Edmonton and stuff, right? Especially because we haven’t beaten them in almost 10 years to the date, and our last loss against them qualifies as a frustrating heartbreaker. Remember this one?
  • Failing that, did I just jinx the Flyers?

Exactly. Was watching Carolina game last Friday and they were running thru the ROY candidates with their vote (not that they have them) was for their boy Skinner (insert Principal Chalmers voice).

They get to the end of the graphic and mention Bobs and proceed to give usual “he’s cooling off lately” and blamed the Toronto loss on Sergei.

I laughed at it but its the sad state of the national media. If they say things enough they must be true, eh?

I just think it’s silly to worry about narrative. It supplies itself, and the satisfying part is attached that to the emotional payoff. If we win the Cup, emotional payoff is a given.

Also, I think Ryan is at his best angry, so I like to poke that bear. In the sexy way.

I mean, he was worried that it won’t mean as much as an ‘87, ’04, ’10 Cup. And I do love those teams, but I’m liable to love any Flyers team that makes it conference-finals deep. Maybe getting that far doesn’t cause great narrative, but it correlates so strongly that it’s a near certainty.

I get wanting the struggle, but even at our best this year we weren’t clearly the best team in hockey. Winning one playoff series is a grind, let alone four. I know that because I’ve never seen us do it. There. Will. Be. Struggle.

I’m not too hot on tailored clothes, but they’re better than the skin tight, “I’m not a cowboy, I just wear the pants!”, nuthuggers a lot of people seem to like currently. That stuff is worse than wearing the Dress Blue uniform (the one you see Marines wearing in all the commercials).
I like pants that some people would call raver pants, but I don’t wear them down past my ass; they allow me to move around comfortably and don’t really get in the way.

by btowl1818 on Mar 8, 2011 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

What I mean is that clothes should “fit”. Not tight, not baggy, the inseam isn’t too high or two low, doesn’t pull, rise/hem is correct length and I can clearly see that the guy has a backside. Lots of extra fabric back there is a turn off.

I am also insanely against this current trend of women and men going everywhere—and this includes restaurants—in sweatpants. Just NO. Coming from the gym, sure? Practice? OK. You have 102 degree fever and are going to CVS/doctor’s office? Fine. The mall? No. See also: pajama pants. Comfort does not supercede the need for some freaking decency. If I sound like a crotchety old woman, so be it. Fashion has never been better than it is now (trust me as a teen of the 80’s for the love of God)—with so many choices, why choose the ugliest of the bunch?

I agree completely on the sweatpants and pajama pants. Also, leggings. They aren’t pants. When I’m around campus for my grad classes, almost every girl I see has the standard “uniform” of an extra-long shirt (usually worn over another shirt), a belt that rests on their hips and isn’t actually attached to anything, leggings, Ugg boots, giant plastic sunglasses, and their hair pushed up into a little bump on top of their heads. I think it looks ridiculous.

by hintzy64 on Mar 8, 2011 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

I see so many of my classmates wearing the leggings style and I don’t get it. Leggings are fine, worn under a dress maybe when it’s cold out. But just with a shirt? It looks odd. The only pair of leggings I own are for a pair of pajamas. I’ve only worn them out of my room once, and that was under a pair of jeans on an incredibly freezing day.

I have a few of the longer shirts, but I just wear them with jeans. The belt thing looks odd most of the time, but I have a few shirts where it just helps create a better line (and the belt came with the shirt, not just a random one thrown on for the hell of it). Uggs, I don’t see the point. Nor the plastic sunglasses. I prefer my nice sunglasses, anyway.

The leggings/tunic/belt thing dates back to the 50’s—only back then the “bad girls” wore them. It comes around every decade it seems. It’s not a great look unless you are a size 4 or under.

My personal fave outfit is sweatpants rolled down, tank top, Uggs and a SCARF! With a tank top. I don’t get it.

by doubleh on Mar 8, 2011 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, that’s definitely why I don’t wear leggings. Just don’t ever look right on me because of the size thing. But sometimes the belt thing looks okay (and ties around the waist seem to look nice)

tank top and scarf? Weird. I wear my scarves a lot, but that’s also because I get cold easily and it usually so happens that when I wear a scarf, I feel warmer. But I might very rarely wear it with short sleeves, never with a tank top.

The fashion choices among my fellow college students just scares me sometimes.

Leggings definitely have a purpose when it is cold out, but I don’t understand the use of them as pants. Long shirts are also fine, over jeans sounds good. But it’s the combination of the two things that I don’t understand. It does nothing for me. Which I guess is a good thing, since I’m like twice their age now. Celebrities fall into three levels for me. If I called them hot, they are probably in the top 5% of all people. If I say I don’t find her attractive, I mean that she’s not the best looking person when surrounded by other people attractive enough to be seen on TV, but I would still give a finger to bang/would be among the most attractive people I’ve seen in real life. If I say she isn’t attractive, then I don’t think I’d be attracted, even in real life.

That last category is pretty much only Fergie.

“Give a finger to bang” sounds a lot dirtier than I meant it to be, but now is my new favorite phrase.

Of course, they did, and we didn’t. She decided Matt Damon is far more worth her time. And I agree. But she still calls Reese my “girlfriend.” (I don’t think she knows about Zooey.)

I have a ton of work to do, but at the moment all of it is waiting on other people to be ready for me. I didn’t even have lecture today because the professor is sick. So instead I wrote a MATLAB script to automate a bunch of things for my grad research, so now it’ll get done faster and with less irritating, repetitive tasks on my part. That’s happily churning away right now, so I’ll just sit and watch the progress bar until 5:00.

Luca Sbisa re-signed to a four year, 8.7 million contract.

That has to be the league’s worst.

by Snevik on Mar 8, 2011 4:00 PM EST reply actions

1) His ELC was up, so he had to get re-signed;
2) It’s only $400k more a year than Matt Walker;
3) Sbisa is 21 years old;
4) He has 100 NHL games played at that age;
5) Former 1st round pick.

It’s not atrocious. It just might take a year before becoming good value.

Besides liking Sbisa, how do you justify spending that much money on someone whose NHL worth is unproven?

So why overpay his value for a single year? Do they really assume he’ll be a $4 million a year player in 2014? And if so, why not dare teams to make offer sheets?

It just doesn’t makes sense to me. Do you actually think this is a good contract, or are you just arguing against my incredulity? This seems like another Cali team overpaying for a four-year contract on a small sample size.

I’m mostly arguing against your incredulity. But I don’t think it’s a bad contract. I think it’s a risk, and an unnecessary risk. Just not a bad contract.
