I almost wish I knew exactly what Pronger wanted from the team. It’s like they have been depleated for whatever reason(s), and here they are trying to get it back, and he’s still like, ‘this team sucks, we can do better, the’re hard headed’. I’m paraphrasing here, but really, how about a, ‘this is a start’. I guess i was kind of annoyed.

I was annoyed when I had to watch them over the last 3 weeks. Playing 20 minutes of a game isn’t very good and that is all they have been doing the past few games.

I didn’t see the game, but I heard they did really good in the first and petered out during the second and third. If it is what I envision, it is how it has been for the past few games … thus the “this a start” is more like “we did the same crap but won”

This team won’t get very far in the playoff by only playing 1/3 of the game and they need to change it … it doesn’t matter if Pronger tries to sugar coat it for the media or not, they need to play better for long and be more consistent with it.

by ic0n67 on Mar 9, 2011 8:07 AM EST up reply actions

First off, having somebody in the room like Pronger is going to be more effective at communicating that it’s not acceptable to play with a 20 minute effort than Lavy would be. It’s not Pronger’s job to pat guys on the back and say they started to get better, that’s not the role he plays on this team.

We also lack context on the situation. Hypothetically, they could have actually discussed playing harder in the second or third period before the game or during intermission; and then they didn’t execute and live up to what they talked about and it set Pronger off. That’s total speculation, but all I’m getting at is we don’t know all of the context that precipitated Pronger’s yelling after the game.

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 9, 2011 8:22 AM EST up reply actions

I suppose that’s where my true annoyance comes from. Prongs always appears to be doing these pressers after he just had a screaming match with someone and I’m left like huh? This wasnt pretty but there was effort.

by sophiejo on Mar 9, 2011 8:27 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Lavy agreed with him after the game though, so obviously the team doesn’t think it was enough. It was an improvement over the last couple of games, but they need to break out of their bad habits.

I can see where you’re coming from, but I’m just chalking it up to Pronger doing what he knows he needs to do.

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 9, 2011 8:54 AM EST up reply actions

I can’t mention everything nor can I write a story about it because there are some off the record details, but Pronger (and much of the team) was pissed about the turnovers and getting too fancy in the second two periods.

All I have to say is I am so glad there are not reporters outside of my office everyday wanting to ask questions about every minute detail of my day.

Yeah, yeah, I know they get paid a lot of money and are public figures. Just sayin it has to be a drag win or lose to have such 2nd guessing.

If you give them a pat on the back and a “this is a start,” where is the incentive to push harder? The team will think “yay! that was better!” and relax. If you want to push them to perform better, because we know they can, you need to tell them that. And I agree with what DragonGirl says, it needs to come from within, not from the coach. It’s purely a mental thing. The team needs to push itself to play at its full potential for 60 minutes. Pronger is being the voice of that inner drive.

Not necessarily, I think the Flyers know that they have been sucking badly. I don’t think this one game is enough to let they say ok, we won, lets relax. If they do then there is a very serious problem. I dont totally disagree with Proger, there was just some confusion as to where what i, interpreted to be added hostiliy in his interviews, was coming from.

The list has a lot of exceptions, like players signed to contracts after their season is up. So if Brendan Ranford signs an NHL deal after his WHL season, he can play. If Jakub Kovar signs an NHL deal after the playoffs, he can play. But Joonas Lehtivuori cannot.

Hi Ho Silver Lining

It’s weird to have to think of “silver linings” after a win, but here are a few:

  • They won.
  • Pronger had a similar outburst (along with Timonen) after this game last year. The Flyers went 4-4 to finish the year after that, but with the exception of the Islanders game, their effort was much better. The Montreal game in particular stands out as one where the Flyers were the better team for 60 minutes but lost anyway.
  • The Flyers only had 8 games left after Pronger’s outburst last year. This year, they have twice as many.
  • The next game is a road game, against an opponent they just lost to last week. They tend to play more simply on the road and it’s been paying off.

I am predicting that they’ll be much tighter over the next two weeks, especially since they have a road trip coming up.

This Chara hit is turning into a shit-storm. Its all Canadiens zealots coming out “en masse” saying Chara did it on purpose or at the least he deserves a long suspension. It was interference, but only a 2 minute penalty, the 5 minute penalty was only given to keep peace. Chara should not be suspended. However, if he ends up without a suspension I’m sure we’ll all hear about another Colin Campbell Conspiracy.

What can't Giroux do?

by tmurder on Mar 9, 2011 10:14 AM EST reply actions

I understand the calm things down angle but I really don’t agree with a 5 minute major. I didn’t even know you could give a major penalty for interference. It was an unfortunate result of a clean hit the only thing illegal about it was that it was away from the puck. If he’s suspended I’ll be very very surprised. Especially given that he has no history (to my knowledge) of violent or dirty play.

Flyers Fans: We've survived Lock-outs, Lindros and Cooperalls. If you want to get rid of us, you'll have to split an atom or two.

A major for interference had to have been specifically added a few years ago. It is in the rule book now and I have a hard copy floating around that it is not there.

by ic0n67 on Mar 9, 2011 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t agree with the 5 min either. The play didn’t warrant it, but i understand why the ref gave him a major.

What can't Giroux do?

by tmurder on Mar 9, 2011 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

I was just typing about the topic … you beat me to the punch

He shouldn’t get suspended.

It shouldn’t have been a 5 minute major even it is one of those where the injury dictates the penalty instead of the act.

In reference to Interference
“56.4 Major Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a major penalty, based on the degree of violence, to a player guilty of interfering with an opponent (see 56.5).”

The degree of violence was nominal at best … and violence defined correctly as:

vi·o·lence
Definition of VIOLENCE
1 a : exertion of physical force so as to injure or abuse (as in warfare effecting illegal entry into a house) ~~ http://www.merriam-webster.com

If you look back at the Upshall hit on Bartulis. The degree of violence did not dictate a major penalty; it was barley a penalty at all if it there wasn’t an injury involved. As soon as I saw Bartulis on the ice I assumed it was a 5 minute major and was actually pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t.

Chara was rubbing the guy out he was not intending to drive the mans head into glass. There is a gap in the bench area that is unavoidable unless you decide to only have line changes during stoppages in play. This is an unfortunate accident and nothing more. He isn’t the first guy to take a head or a shoulder into that spot of the bench. People would hit that area before there was even padding there … yeah ouch.

There was nominal force and I would bet zero intent on injuring him there. Five feet further down the boards and the only thing that would have been said about it would be the moans of the Boston fans about a penalty called (which a 2 minute probably should have been).

I agree there should be no suspension, but if Upshall gets 2 for that hit then Chara should get some … Add a few games for the hospitalization … as a few more fore a neck injury when the Todd Bertuzzi hit is in the headlines again … subtract 5 for being a star player … yeah … still complete bullshit either way.

by ic0n67 on Mar 9, 2011 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

Similar Hit?

Chara’s hit automatically reminded me of another big hit where there wasn’t a clean sheet of glass, just an ugly corner. I think many of us can remember this…

Leclair’s Tremendous Hit

by ov3rl0rdl on Mar 9, 2011 10:21 AM EST reply actions

A little different … other side of the ice first off and the only reason there was an injury was the fact that the glass gave way. There was zero chance that is avoided other than not hitting him at all where Chara’s hit someone say “il aurait pu être évitée”

Right. It comes from that Coatesy interview with Bobrovsky, where he asked all sorts of incoherent, Coatesy-like questions, and the only thing Bob ever said in response was “Bob!”

It’s basically “Your argument isn’t even worth responding to” but much shorter to type.

And it was originally used when Geoff was kvetching about Coatesy being a bad commentator, as a joke reference to that interview. It’s blown up a bit since then.

Whether the NHL wants to or not, how it deals with this situation could change the game for good. A stiff suspension — or none at all — would send a strong message one way or another.

I wish the league got out of the “trying to measure intent” part of these penalties and simply judged the result — a player’s actions led to another player being severely injured. If results, rather than intent, determined length of suspensions, perhaps players would end up having to think before delivering a hit like Chara’s.

by TNBrando on Mar 9, 2011 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that “intent” has no place in the disciplinary process. I’d treat this like Upshall’s hit on Bartulis or Ovechkin’s knee-to-knee from last year. It was a dangerous hit, intentional or not is irrelevant. It should be suspendable, if nothing else, just as a stiff warning for Chara to keep himself under control.

Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!

by hintzy64 on Mar 9, 2011 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

What keeps me off the “let’s suspend him for good!” bandwagon is that had this hit happened anywhere else it would have been a completely clean check. I’m not saying he shouldn’t be suspended, but I’m not saying he should get +10 games either. It’s tough.

Can’t disagree, but considering the severity of the injury, I would not be surprised to see some suspension doled out here on the premise that Chara was reckless in laying such a hit in that area of the boards/rink. After all, fractured cervical vertebrae in layman’s terms means he has a broken neck.

Saw the shot, someone posted it on the SBN article Travis wrote, but I still disagree that it was intent—and his hand is on the inside of the guys face (in reference to where the boards are). His arm is definitely up, but he is not “driving the guys head” anywhere but away from the puck, which happens to be towards the boards. It’s not a vicious elbow he’s swinging to hit the guys head. The overhead view was a great look where you see a guy (Chara) just ride a guy into the boards. Unfortunately it happened where it did.

And once again, I go back to the fact that if Chara was so aware of where he was skating and did this purposely, why didn’t Max know where he was and understand he was skating into the glass? Why is it always one guy who should say, “Oh wait, we’re skating into an area where you might be injured if I continue to check you. I will stop and let you skate by.” Notice the “continue” specifically in this case. You are being checked by Chara, and he is riding you into the boards. You should be aware of the fact that there is a large piece of stationary glass right in front of you, and that as big and strong as he is, you will probably not be getting around him.

G, the second coming of Foppa.

by JerseyDriver on Mar 9, 2011 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t want the NHL judging intent or result.

I want the NHL judging the action. A boarding is a boarding, regardless of whether the guy was carted off on a stretcher or stumbled his way to the bench or laid there for awhile.

You can’t punish based on result or you won’t punish fairly.

It was a good read, the situation makes a considerable more amount of sense than originally. I didn’t want you to take it as an attack, because it wasn’t meant to be one. I just get curious sometimes because when I see someone’s random attack on Gagne (there was a scuffle of some sort yesterday about Gagne) I fully expect the Katchis Defense team to arrive. And I asked to myself, is it possible to argue from a fan of a certain player’s standpoint, with someone whose a fan of the team. There are certain elements that are common ground, but I think after a certain point it’s a waste to argue; you have people who put the team first and then you have others who like the team but its not their native team which puts them in a bind.

Again, this wasn’t an indictment against you, nor was this talking behind your back in some sort of high school esque way, I was just interested in where people stood on the matter.

Also, awhile back (and this has stayed with me for awhile, because it’s a matter that transcends something as trivial as a sport, and can be applicable to bigger things in life), you said what amounted to supporting the name on the back, not the crest on the chest when it came to the Flyers. I thought to myself, would I ever be able to do that to my home team, and the answer was an emphatic no.

The gist: I like to think about social matters and how I organize sports in my life, and what you said made me think a bit more about how I manage sports.

No worries :)

Oh, I didn’t really see it as an attack from you. It was just really unexpected and caught me off guard a bit. It didn’t make me angry. It didn’t cause a negative reaction of any matter. It actually gave me an opportunity to explain myself because I’ve seen many people getting confused with me and my fandom, as well as I was accused of not being the true Flyers fan.

As I tried to explain in my response to you I don’t always put the name on the back before the crest on the chest. I don’t do that at all when it comes to my hometown team and I don’t do that when it comes to the Lightning. The Flyers are a different case though and I believe I explained that enough yesterday.

I thought to myself, would I ever be able to do that to my home team, and the answer was an emphatic no.

Well, as I said, me neither. The important thing here is that the Flyers are not my home team and they can never be.

I'm in love with the Lightning, the Flyers are my fling and I have a crush on the Flyers fans.

What a friggin joke this league is.

Guys on the Flyers have been suspended for way less. And I was ok with their suspensions, but in light of this? I am not saying to suspend based on result, but even during the game that was a dirty hit. There was no reason Chara had to keep riding him into the boards like he did. The puck was already well on it’s way to someone else.
