Is it me or is this Pronger thing really getting way out of hand? I hope the team doesn’t have the mindset of the rest of the city in thinking all hope is lost if he doesn’t make it back or if he does and he isn’t truly healthy enough to make a difference. Either scenario cold be detrimental. I would assume the locker room knows exactly what the plan for him is and they know that either way he is 1 player and with or without him they are plenty capable of beating Buffalo. I guess I am just sick of the Pronger watch. It reminds me of the Lindros era and how that team constantly held itself in limbo over his health and game status.

As I remember it, it always seem to effect their play. He would go down and they would play great without him for a couple games then ultimately have a losing record without him. Then when he was close to coming back or when he came back they would hit a skid either in expectation of him coming back or by standing around waiting for him to take over his first game back. Remember in 2000, they were beating the devils 3-1 then the rumors started about him coming back. They lost game 5 without him in the line up and then the they lost the other two games with him in the line up. But game six they lost 2-1 and he was the only guy that scored. The team stood around that game expecting him to be the hero. And in game 7 once he got knocked out they were cooked. Like him or not, a lot of Lindros’ recklessness stemmed from him trying to do way too much on his own.
Commenter formerly known as M from Pdaddy, but still just Call Me "M"!
I love Lindros…he’s a big reason why I feel in love with hockey.
/This confession will probably make some of our readers (Kreider) like him even less.
Defending Carter until 2021...
There are only a couple things I take seriously other then really loving hockey especially Flyers hockey. Lindros, his career and his place in history is one of them. Dude should be considered for the hall but in the end his career might just have been to short. Damn shame what they did to that kid while this organization exploded from his contributions.
Commenter formerly known as M from Pdaddy, but still just Call Me "M"!
Yea, I don’t know that the Flyers “turn it around” from the early 90s without his star power. We would probably still have the Wacho Center, but instead of “The House that Lindros Built” it would be “The House that Iverson Built”…and somewhat newer actually, but not demonstrably.
Also, we might have been every bit as good or even better…we would have had Forsberg. But still, Lindros and the hype brought me into hockey. I was already a fan, but I was so young I thought basketball was the most exciting
Defending Carter until 2021...
We would have had Forsberg, Ricci, Duchesne, Hextall, Chris Simon, Kerry Huffman, and draft picks. Add them to a core of Rod Brind’Amour, Mark Recchi, Kevin Dineen, Garry Galley, Pelle Eklund, and Dmitri Yushkevich. Some of those guys / picks could have been traded for help in other areas, like defense and goaltending.
I loved Lindros and think it’s a shame that he never grew up while he was here. I think the issue was more how he let his parents run his life as opposed to the organ-eye-zation putting him through it, so to speak. (Clarkie didn’t help, though.)
That said, I can’t help but wonder how the Flyers would have looked had they kept Forsberg and stayed the course with their core.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
We’ll always wonder, but it’s totally unfair to criticize this trade. ESPN called it one of the worst trades in NHL history on a recent post…which is outrageous. Philly was trying to get the next great player. You can’t hold it against the organ-eye-zation. Forsberg was an unknown European quantity, as was Selanne, and Lindros was the next one.
Side Note: Bure went in the 6th round the same year Lindros was drafted.
Defending Carter until 2021...
Why is it that Lindros never grew up? If never growing up is criticizing the training staff and management for bullying him into playing while he couldn’t even focus or stop from vomiting because he was concussed over and over again. Then having the organization make public any relationship they had with his parents public which none of which was confirmed as accurate. Then I guess he needed to “grow up”. They fucking used that guy, abused that guy, profited off that guy and then disposed of him as if he were common trash. Shameful.
Commenter formerly known as M from Pdaddy, but still just Call Me "M"!
Q & A
Question:
Why is it that Lindros never grew up?
Answer:
he let his parents run his life
Clarkie to the witness stand:
“I see Eric Desjardins get his teeth knocked out. I didn’t hear from his mom and dad. John LeClair gets his face torn up with 40 stitches, and we didn’t hear from his mom and dad. I’m just so tired of our organization getting beat up so badly by all the accusations the family makes. I don’t dislike Eric. I pity him. I feel sorry for him. What’s it like to be 27 years old and have your mom and dad running your life? Can’t even go to the [bleep]ing doctor on your own without your mom and dad coming along… If he’s going to come back, he can’t have his dad calling us and telling us who to trade for and who he wants to play with Eric and who can’t play with Eric.”
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I love Clarke with all my heart and soul. I knew Clarke very well as a child and he treated me and everyone for that matter like gold. But you don’t think there is any exaggeration in that statement? And if for no other reason then to save face for how they treated him and the concern of legal matters this was put out there to control public opinion. No offense to Leclair and Desjardins but people weren’t trying to take advantage of those guys since they were 10 years old. I sure as shit hope my parents or yours would have given a shit if the world was trying to take advantage. And in reality they did have good reason to be concerned for how there son was being treated because the fact remains the Flyers never took proper regard for his health and it ruined his career. So I guess his parents were right to be concerned.
Commenter formerly known as M from Pdaddy, but still just Call Me "M"!
I had never heard that Clarke quote before, but it doesn’t surprise me at all. I’m with you on this one.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
I agree with mikefive. We very likely did push Lindros too hard at times to come back from injuries, but I still lay most of the blame for how things went down with him on his parents. It goes back at least to his days in juniors when he refused to sign with the team that drafted him, a stunt he repeated again in the NHL. I guarantee his parents had a hand in that and it set a precedent in his mind that he can do whatever the fuck he wants because he’s Eric Lindros.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
And who let him feel that way also???? The Flyers, until they no longer needed his broken down ass. I really believe the actual interactions of his parents are somewhere in the middle like most he said she said arguments. In the end the only person that gave it all was Lindros.
Commenter formerly known as M from Pdaddy, but still just Call Me "M"!
He wasn’t just good with Philly though, he had a great last year in Dallas if I remember correctly. He was a big piece in their playoff run in that year.

Do we have any word/idea if Z will actually get to play during the playoffs? I am assuming he will based on him playing the last few games but really I am just guessing.

I’m assuming he plays. He’ll probably have a shortish leash, but against a team with Buffalo’s speed and Ryan Miller in net we need a guy like him on the ice.

HEART
In all the discussion of “HEART” over the last week or so, has anyone made a Captain Planet reference yet? Because I want to be the first one.
Seriously. Earth, wind, water, fire…..heart? WHICH ONE DOESN’T BELONG?
I really dig earth wind and fire. Saw them in 87 at the igloo when I was going to Slippery Rock. No Philip Bailey but great live all the same.

I didn’t catch this last week, but did anyone talk about that SF Giants fan that got beaten into a coma outside of Dodgers stadium? Was it covered widely in the media?
I'm kind of a dick.
I thought it was covered pretty well.
The Pirate fan who got beaten over the weekend is also making it’s rounds nationally.
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
That’s not the first violent incident.
In a parking lot outside Dodger Stadium in 2003, a 19-year-old Dodgers fan named Pete Marron and his companions got into an argument with a Giants fan named Marc Antenorcruz, 25, as they left in the seventh inning of a 6-4 win by the Giants.
Antenorcruz was drunk and belligerent, witnesses said. Marron took a .25-caliber semiautomatic from the console of a sport utility vehicle and shot the junior college sophomore twice from 40 feet away, killing him. Marron got 50 years to life.
And is it odd that I get this perverse thrill out of going to PPP to watch their interaction FLYERROB?
I'm kind of a dick.
No. I find it entertaining myself. Haven’t been there in a while though but they are good people there.

I am actually quite impressed with the behavior of the SB Nation Blogs. I’m assuming Pennsburgh is SB Nation and pensblog is…not. The comments on Pensblog during the Flyers-Pens game actually shocked me. Like, I went to PSU, I’ve dealt with pens fans, and I like to rag on them, but it was ridiculous. Pennsburgh on the other hand was a good community of posters. I guess it’s just the culture of the two blogs.

Well played…but seriously, if we are collecting money, and lose the bid, then it helps no one. If everyone wants to raise money for a good cause, do it, then just donate it. Plus this way we don’t have to associate with lambert at all.

While we’re at it, though, we get some quality milk out of the PPP/DGB teat and serve Lambert up for slaughter after inviting him in our home.
That was a weird place to go with that, I guess. I don’t want someone to win that bid and then pretend to appreciate Lambert. I trust only us to treat him properly.
My thing is, it be nice if the communities bidding on this would agree to donate the money win or lose.

I won’t be there for game 1 or 2…and I have tickets to both 5 and 7 but I’m kinda feeling like we take this in 5.
Game 1: Come out in fire 5-2
Game 2: Closer score but no real scare 4-3
Game 3: Miller Time! 1-3
Game 4: Richie Time 4-3 OT
Game 5: Carter scores 2 in the third when the game is over 6-2

I think it’s just more reviled here, and as such more noticed. My grad school was highly international and when we went abroad for our global section of the program a lot fo the international students were shocked at how the American men weren’t just going directly to brothels, etc. For them it was quite normal.
I’m not mentioning countries here because I don’t want to stereotype. Let’s just say our culture reviles it more, so we hear about it more.

If it’s a matter of infidelity, some cultures make a much bigger deal out of it than others, so the numbers get skewed. Last spring, the Flyers took advantage of lower expectations and some terrific matchups
True.
to get to the Cup final. This time, the locals have penciled in a long playoff run.
False….where is he seeing that? I think Philly is being typical Philly and is rather pessimistic about this team right now. Not without some justifiability considering how they have finished their season.

Sorry, if this was mentioned already, but 6 of 8 experts commentators picked theSabresfanbase more closely aligned with Yankees Fans
If I’m correct, the “experts” at ESPN have not chosen us to win by a majority of opinions since before the lockout.
2006 They chose the Sabers
2008 They chose Washington and Montreal and pittsburgh
2009 they chose Pittsburgh
2010 They chose NJ, Boston, Montreal, and Chicago
Defending Carter until 2021...
Well in fairness they are 4-5 in those picks so it’s not like they are totally missing the boat.
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
If you continually choose against any team you’re going to be around .500 in that stretch. Except Detroit and Pittsburgh I suppose. If you choose against a team that never makes the third round you’re guaranteed to be .500 at worse, so you have a 12/16 chance of being .500 at worst.
Defending Carter until 2021...
To rephrase what Pardini36 was getting at above. Picking teams at complete random a billion times would have resulted in a slightly success. Therefore the ESPN “experts” are no better than random when it comes to the Flyers.
It didn’t read like he was saying that the Experts were picking at random, it read as if the experts were specifically picking against the Flyers.
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
Well, Burnside hates us, which is amusing as he chose us. But I was actually mentioning how ESPN tends to choose against the Flyers quite often because teamwork isn’t what they’re selling. They’re selling highlights from star players.
Defending Carter until 2021...
But aside from when they faced Washington, Pittsburgh and Chicago, what star players did the Sabres, Habs, Devils, and Bruins offer that the Flyers couldn’t “match”?
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
Briere/Vanek, the Habs are very hyped on TSN (ESPN Canada), Brodeur, and ESPN loves boston (Rask, Chara, Savard) as much as they hate Philly. Philly has a ton of star power, but ESPN, and specifically their hockey writers, tend to write about the Flyers as a bunch of notalent goons. Of course, i’m biased, but seriously, read Scott Burnside sometime.

I don’t blame them, in a series that is a close match up like this I would generally side with the team with the better goalie.

I think a lot of people will also pick Buffalo because they’ve been playing lights out since December while Philly’s been slumping.
I’m not sure that’s a great piece of logic; if Buffalo didn’t play like that they wouldn’t be in the postseason and Philly’s had the luxury of coasting for a long time.
Pension Plan Puppets*

Agreed, but like I said, I like to side with the better goalie.
I can see Miller stealing a game or two…not so much with Bob.
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
Once again goaltending is a myth if a Leighton Niemi Stanley Cup taught us anything the name on the back of the goalie’s jersey doesn’t matter.
Lundquist, Miller, Luongo have zero SCF appearences and Leighton does. Leighton’s playoff numbers 0.916 SV PCT and 2.46 GAA are very comparable to those 3 big names. So take that as you wish.
Lundquist – 0.907 2.66
Miller – 0.917 2.39
Loungo – 0.919 2.46
The better goalie doesn’t win in fact that is quite the opposite. The team with the best offense tends to win in the playoffs post lockout the top G/G teams have the best success.
2010 – CHI 3rd G/G
2009 – PITT 5th G/G
2008 – DET 3rd G/G
2007 – ANA 8th G/G
2006 – CAR 3rd G/G
No team has won the cup with under 3.00 G/G during the regular season in the post lockout era. Buffalo is ranked 9th with a 2.93 G/G this year.
I think there has to be a distinction made between “goaltending” and “high-priced goaltending”.
It’s silly to say that Lundqvist, Vokoun, and Miller aren’t playoff goalies because the teams in front of them were bad.

Which does nothing to take away from my statement that I trust Miller to steal a game more than I do Bob. Better goaltending is better goaltending. Doesn’t always mean the team with the better goalie wins, you know, it being a team game and all. But given the option I would take Miller over Bob every time and I think you would have to be crazy not to.
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
To be fair, when you compare the defenses, Miller is a lot more likely to get the chance to steal a game. Once everyone is diving in front of pucks and the Flyers playoff tested D takes away the inside Bob won’t have to do as much. We just have to stop giving away breakaways.

The Pens didn’t have the wingers they’d had in years past. Ever since Malkin and Crosby began costing 16+M I’m not as worried about the Pens. Neal scares me however. If/when Crosby returns he’s gonna be a terror.
You’re really saying playoff experience isn’t worth anything? I know it’s not a quantifiable stat but seriously…
And in 2009 we got beaten by a better team. Plain and simple.
Defending Carter until 2021...
I think what he is saying is the value in the talent of our D outweighs what their playoff experience brings to the table by a very large margin.
I don’t think you’d disagree, especially with your last statement there. There is way more value in having 5 top 4 Dmen, than there is having play off tested Dmen.
Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!
Is this the right room for an argument?
Yes, I agree, but I also think that our Defense is better because of their experience in these moments. They’re not going to have the first time jitters a Myers might have. They’re going to remember being down 3-0 in game 7 and shutting the door, etc. That has value in big games.

I’m sure they’ve won in junior and the minors, but winning in the Stanley Cup is a bit different than the Calder Cup.
To give a comparison, Rory McIlroy has won at every level, but with the lead in a major for the first time…80. It took Phil until his 30s to win a major, and he won big tournaments at every level.
So yes, I think experience is valuable.
Defending Carter until 2021...
There’s something to be said for knowing what it feels like to make it to Game 6 of the SCF. There’s very little to be said about what it takes to win in game 86. “Stanley Cup Playoff Experience” is ridiculously overrated, let alone in the first round.
Sean O`Donnell’s “experience” means nothing in comparison to Tyler Myers’ skill. If this was the ECF, I’d only agree with you in regards to experience = ability to handle fatigue.
But to say that the Flyers’ experienced D helps them win 4 games in April is… vastly overstating experience.

I can’t argue that I’d take SOD over Myers, obviously. But if you give me the choice between two comparable players I’ll take the more experienced guy every time. It’s the playoffs. If you don’t take every game seriously you’re going to find trouble quickly.
Defending Carter until 2021...
But if you give me the choice between two comparable players I’ll take the more experienced guy every time.
But what is “experience”? Does SOD have more experience than Timonen simply because he won a Cup? Does Myers have “experience” because he’s played in the playoffs? Does Lukas Krajicek have as much “experience” as Matt Carle?
If you offered me a guy who played 26 NHL playoff games in one season vs. a guy who never played more than 6 in any season, of course I’d take the guy who went deep. But it has nothing to do with him “knowing how to win”, it’s that he knows what it’s like to play 108 NHL games in one year. To deal with the injuries and play through them. To handle the mental and physical fatigue. I don’t care if he won the Cup, was a fourth line player, or what.
The only thing “experience” helps (if you don’t believe me, see Lanci’s goaltender argument) is dealing with the fatigue.
If you don’t take every game seriously you’re going to find trouble quickly.
And you don’t need experience for this.

“I felt like they had 8 guys out there.” – Sidney Crosby after his first playoff series
Yes, even one series matters.
I don’t think the experience gained in games 40-60 in the NHL playoffs has the marginal benefit of games 1-20. Law of diminishing returns applies.

Who plays 40-60 NHL playoff games?
A) We know what I think about player quotes. They’re useless.
B) Maybe Crosby felt like they had 8 guys out there because the team put 3 guys on him at all times.
C) If one series gives you experience, how about 4 games? What about 2 games? What about just Game 1?

True I take Miller over Bob but for a completely different reason. Not because I am worried about Miller stealing games. I am more worried about BOB shitting the bed and giving games away. The Sabers might need Miller to steal games the Flyers don’t need Bob to steal games. All the Flyers need is for BOB to BOB and the offense to score goals.
For the most part, I find those guys adorable. They are harmless and seem to really love the game, trying to keep ESPN hockey coverage afloat in a sea of network indifference.

The Checking line article lost me with “the article will focus on the 20 different Eastern Conference Quarterfinals matchups.” Sample size problems, fella.
As is understood it he was looking at 4 match ups per quater final over the 5 years and that gives you the 20. I could be wrong since I am on a train trying to do some work.

Eh. None of those types of things are. But “post-lockout” is as far back as you can go anyway (different era), so… you’re going to have a small sample anyway.

To actually acknowledge some of the articles above...
This cracks me up:
2.94 Hartnell Downs per game is comparable to the following things:
*Amount of women Jeff Carter or Mike Richards sleeps with during a post game party
*Amount of orgasms per second caused by a Claude Giroux deke
*Amount of times Pierre McGuire thinks about Mike Richards per second of a Flyers broadcast
*Amount of Elbows Chris Pronger throws per shift
*Amount of heart attacks Peter Laviolette has per game because of Bobrovsky’s puck handling.
And for “The team supposedly has a game plan to beat Ryan Miller,” I was hoping the answer was shoot the goddamn puck.
Obviously getting shots and traffic on [Ryan] Miller is huge tooIt is.

My favorite chemistry lab test ever was when we were each given a small bowl of copper shavings, of which only the teacher knew the mass. We had a long list of reactions and processes to put it through and at the end had to bring it back to pure copper. From the mass (and maybe other properties) of the copper you obtained at the end, the teacher judged how well you did. It was awesome.

I have body tremors…it made a lot of P Chem labs very frustrating for me. So my experience was probably a little different. Also, we were require to write 40+ page lab reports for every lab…that sucked donkey d.
Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!

I get ganglion cysts in my wrists, elbows, and shoulders at random. Whenever I have one, my strength and coordination in that arm get completely shot. I was useless in two physics labs because of that – one was dissecting a cow’s eye to examine the lens structure, the other was handling (mildly) radioactive material. During both of them, I had a cyst the size of a shooter marble in my wrist, and couldn’t even close my hand fully.
Bob.
Fine, I’ll elaborate:
Organic chemistry has become sophisticated enough that very very few opportunities exist to do something truly novel and unique. There are lots of jobs in it, but most of those jobs are glorified technician positions where the most valued traits are productivity and precision, not innovation and courage.
Inorganic chemistry has way more unknowns and to-be-discovereds. There aren’t nearly as many jobs, but it’s a lot more of an exciting discovery science.
Also, “orgo” as a shorthand makes me retch.
That’s fine, and I appreciate that from a lab/bench scale perspective, but as a Chemical Engineer I am coming from a different place, and gained a different type of enjoyment from chemistry.
Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!
Is this the right room for an argument?
from a lab/bench scale perspective
My primary responsibility in my current job is scaling for a large-scale production plant.
But whereas in organic chemistry that would be just engineering (to use a phrase that drove the engineers batty at my old job), it is voodoo (to use the phrase they countered with) and discovery science to develop the scalable process in my field.
If I enjoyed chemistry as much as you did (which I still enjoyed, just to a lesser extent), I would have gotten my degree in chemistry. I enjoyed designing packed bed reactors, and bubble tray distillation columns. So I am not in anyway offended by the word engineering.
That said, school quickly ruined the fun I found in any of the things I initially found joy in, and I turned to Economics in grad school.
Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!
Is this the right room for an argument?
Haha, it’s not “engineering” that was offensive, but they didn’t like it when we’d say “and at that point, it’s just engineering.”
Their response was always to say something like “OK, so you guys will do your voodoo to make this first part work…”
The progression for me was funny, I loved Chemistry, but since you got more of that up front, college slowly ruined it for me, and I found the engineering aspect more and more interesting. Then college ruined that too as time went on. Luckily the Masters only lasted a year and a half…so I got out just before Economics was ruined for me.

I really enjoyed Analytical Chemistry. I thought it was like Gen Chem on steroids and it actually helped me understand Gen Chem a lot better (which was great since I taught recitations for Gen Chem for 3 years after that). I hated Instrumental, although I recognize why it is important.
I hated my Analytical Chem class because my professor was annoying and didn’t teach very well. I haven’t taken Instrumental yet because I wanted to take Forensics last semester so I pushed Instrumental to next Fall.
The class I’m taking now is solely about Mass Spec and it’s kind of cool to see how it works.
