Bob played well. .960 save for the game? I’m going off of memory, may be wrong… I’m pleased with the effort, the PP shows signs of life, minus the last one, and the blocked shots by Buffalo drove me nuts. All in all, we got this, GO FLYERS!!!!!

I tuned in late
… for the most part the team looked great, Bob look good, Miller was a stud (for them)… was it like that the rest of the game?
That PP at the end though was the only one I saw, and yea it was awful. Whats with the puck carriers going on 1 on 4 down the middle? Total waste of a man advantage.
The last power-play was particularly dysfunctional.
some of the other ones weren’t great, but they weren’t in the same league as the last one.

Seriously…No Seriously…Seriously man. You are a good poster and respectful visitor. But today getting critique from you might lead to some bad shit. I am not saying from me but… How about a hey good game last night this is going to be a good series. Tough one last night but that was a hell of an effort by the Flyers.
But,
The last power-play was particularly dysfunctional.
some of the other ones weren’t great, but they weren’t in the same league as the last one.
Not up in here today, Oh no, not up in here.
Last part was hangover’d
I no know you are everywhere at once (:-)), but watch today.

I agree with M.
I have no issue with what you said, especially since it’s pretty accurate but not everyone will accept criticism or critique from a fan of the opposing team today. You know, with us being Philly fans and all, we are just a bunch of blood thirsty, drunken hooligans.

We’ve always been drunken thugs (I’d consider hooligan an upgrade that I like), or ornery morons that hate and want to fight anything not in our colors (like sanny claus), the worst (and oddly also best) sports fans ever… But blood thirsty, haven’t heard that on yet.
Keep in mind, when the Sabres got the powerplay, the first thing we thought of was “Please don’t give up a shorty”

I acknowledged as much, didn’t I. I merely said watch the line, almost like what you would do if a nice young couple sat next to you at a Flyers – Pens game in the wells fargo wearing Crosby jerseys. When the guy claps as the Pens hit the ice. Just a friendly hey I am okay with it , but the shit does happen around here.
Commenter formerly known as M from Pdaddy, but still just Call Me "M"!
You told him if he’s going to say anything around here today, he should patronize us with “good game, that was a tough one” bullshit. Gloating would be a bad idea, but he didn’t do that. He made a valid observation that most, if not all, of us agree with. So I don’t see where he has anything to watch out for. And I respect a valid hockey comment far more than blowing smoke up my ass.

Disagree with what exactly?
That people might not want to hear criticism and critique from him today? Please prove to me how that is an inaccurate statement.
Like I said, I don’t disagree with anything he said. Nor do I have a problem with him saying it. Just point out that he might want to tread lightly.

Sorry, I read your “I agree with M” as agreeing that he should be giving us a pat on the back and making patronizing, bullshit comments instead of actually discussing the game. My bad.

U said nothing wrong but it is patronizing to comment on the Flyers play after a playoff win by the oppositiojn. I am gladly up from discussion of Buffalo’s play but opposing fans commenting on the play of the Flyers can be aggravating the day after a loss.

My rule of thumb has always been:
If someone says “I’m not racist,” and proceeds to talk about race, get ready to hear some of the most racist shit ever.
Agreed. I was amused after the 2008 elections when the media was handing out congratulations for the country getting over racism because we elected a black president. If we were truly over racism, nobody would have noticed that he was a black president.

I made this point to him once after a number of off-color remarks he made and he got quite defensive saying how just because he’s a BAC doesn’t mean he’s not allowed to joke. True, but the nature of the jokes made me question him being a BAC.

Not to be a Debbie Downer but I do think we should all probably let this subject go. The guy is without a shadow of a doubt odd but he is a soldier defending things that many of us take for granted. I couldn’t actually be a soldier even if I wanted to but I still have the utmost respect for the men and women in the military. That said, it went from fun and games to mostly personal attacks. I don’t know, call be a prude but I do think it gets to a point where it’s just mean.
"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard
Hmm, you have a good point. We have been making quite a lot of jokes at his expense since we realized that he’s gone. I know I’ve brought up Keith Jones rather frequently, just as one example. I think we’re all still scratching our head over some of the arguments we had. But you’re right, moving on is probably a good idea.

I think references like Keith Jones are fair…but I think some of the stuff probably gets to be a bit much. I’m as guilty as the next person though and the FLYERROB is _ stuff should probably go…but I always appreciate references like what would Keith Jones say, etc, and would like them to stay.

I only partly agree.
We do take things for granted and I appreciate soldiers for their service.
That said, there are dummies that are soldiers, there are dummies that are cops, there are dummies that are firemen…a certain sample size of any given population will be filled with dummies.
And dummies are fair game for shenanigans. I agree we probably get carried away with it. That’s because someone makes a minor reference and someone who isn’t in-the-know asks about it and then it continues…
But I don’t think anyone has said anything to ridicule the guy as a soldier or in any way relating to that. If they have, I haven’t seen it.
We do take things for granted and I appreciate soldiers for their service.
Very true. But IMO, being a soldier doesn’t give him a free pass for some of the shit he pulled around here. Either way, it’s irrelevant because the after-the-fact personal stuff against him has been getting a bit too much. And we really shouldn’t be doing that to anyone, soldier or not. Yes, we can still make little references to funny comments, as said above, but we should probably avoid commentary on character and such. It’s a thin line.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
I would agree … except, when I made quite clear to him that I had already done my time serving in the military, he simply dismissed it entirely. Frankly, the guy had the maturity of a four-year-old. Don’t miss him a bit; the rest of you know I can take a bit of shit and handle, but he was too freakin’ much.

I think darkest earned a lot of credit towards best with me, since it was a direction Star Trek had never gone before. That was new territory for their writers. Taking your central character, the captain of the ship, and torturing him, showing him in such a terrible situation. Very ballsy.

from what i saw last night
if we can fix the power play and avoid the blocked shots, we win the series. they played a full 60 minutes last night, bob was phenomenal, and the switch was most definitely flipped.
the sabs had just one goal last night, and it was off of a rebound. last night must have done some good things for bob’s confidence, you can’t ask any more of your goaltender. that being said, i think the flyers make their adjustments, and come out with a win tomorrow.

Plus we know how we made adjustments after a loss last playoff run, I still feel good about this series, despite the stats about how every series between us and Buffalo, the winner of game 1 wins the series. Time to break the trend!

Our powerful offense with the most depth in the NHL didn’t score a single goal last night. I wouldn’t call that flipping the switch. If they did flip the switch they blew a fuse.
OK, maybe now it is time to panic
If you judge the game entirely by the final score, then yes. But that’s incredibly one-dimensional and doesn’t even require watching the game. I’m looking a little deeper. I saw a lot of things in that game last night that had been totally absent over the last several weeks. And I only saw half of the game, due to technology’s hatred of me.
Powerplay still sucks though…
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
When I heard the comments about “flipping the switch” I always assumed that meant the Flyer would go back to their winning ways.
If it means they play well but still lose why is everyone happy they flipped it?
OK, maybe now it is time to panic
Because if they play well, they’ll win more often than not.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
This is true over time. Seven games may not be enough time for it to become true.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Because I judge the effort. You can’t win them all but when you only play 20 mins there is no integrity in losing. At least you can say they brought effort and integrity last night. They just lost.
Commenter formerly known as M from Pdaddy, but still just Call Me "M"!
First off, I am not sure now how I would feel, but would you be okay losing the first round as long as they played with effort and integrity?
OK. I guess I could live with it, but damn, I won’t be happy.
OK, maybe now it is time to panic
It’s pretty simple.. anyone who objectively watched the entire game, would have to admit that the ice was seriously tilted. We out-shot, out-hit and outchanced the Sabres, and basically had one breakdown, which quite frankly seemed to come off a non-call of what should have been a penalty on the Sabres. We also had twice the PP’s (but this is one of the sore spots that continues to plague the Flyers.), although at least they were applying good pressure.
The Sabres went into a defensive shell, and Ryan Miller was .. .well, Ryan Miller. If the Flyers can continue to bring the same sort of intensity, pressure and responsibility, there is no way the Sabres are going to be able to match us.
Seriously? Miller stood on his head with .972 save percentage, far exceeding his season average of .916, and we clearly carried the play with 74 attempted shots vs. only 36 for Buffalo. Our PP conversion was terrible, and they capitalized on one juicy rebound to score. Did you watch the game?
Sarauj, Latvija!
But they lost! They couldn’t score any goals! That means they sucked!
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
Yeah, it does. What good is 7 20 goal scorers during the season if no one can find the net in the playoffs?
We soaked up the articles and prediction about how this team is virtually unstoppable due to their depth and our first game out of the gate is a goose egg.
OK, maybe now it is time to panic
Yeah, it does. What good is 7 20 goal scorers during the season if no one can find the net in the playoffs?
The Flyers were shut out 7 times in the regular season. They have played one game in the playoffs. Maybe you should calm down.
We soaked up the articles and prediction about how this team is virtually unstoppable due to their depth
And yet WE wrote articles disputing that fluff. Now you’re upset the team isn’t “virtually unstoppable”? That’s an expectation problem. Not a performance problem.

Yes, I did. And, yes, I thought they played well. But, where are they? They lost the game at home*. They lost the first game in a series where the winner of the first game dictated the winner of 8 past series.
They played well enough to win and nothing to panic over, yet if Ryan stays hot he will steal this series and we may never be as close to a Cup again.

can we get richards some talent on his line? he is languishing back there with versteeg (sit him) and nodl. put jvr back there and put zherdev back where he should go.
also, stop settling the puck. one timers will prevent miller from getting in position and the defense from clogging the shooting lanes.
regardless, the effort was clearly there. i remain confident in game 2.

So not only is he dragging Richards’ Corsi down, but he’s doing it on Richards’ most favorable zone starts.

After sleeping on it (and you know sobering up), here are my thoughts:
- The power play sucked, and it was disgraceful.
- They dominated for most of the game, but…
- They never really challenged Miller. I can’t remember one save that was highlight worthy. Its one thing to have a goalie steal a game by making a bunch of brilliant saves, but that was not the case last night.
- Bob looked good, but then I don’t think the Sabre’s really challenged him either. I blame the defense for that goal (and DSOD only had a small role- he got caught in a bad position).
- Despite not scoring, its not like they played horribly. They didn’t get blown out. I never thought they gave up. And it was only Game 1. Now, if after Game 2, nothing has changed and they lose, then its time to panic.

What made this team so good was that they all wanted to win the Cup. Versteeg reminds me of the 2009 Cole Hamels. I feel like he’s just missing that extra drive the Flyers had.
And before someone says it…I’m a huge Hamels fan. He’s my favorite Phillie…but in 2009 he even admitted he celebrated too much and didn’t work as hard as he should have.
Defending Carter until 2021...
My main issue with Versteeg is that he slows down in the neutral zone for some reason. This is why he turns the puck over so damn much.
If this draft class didn’t suck unicorn horns then I’d be more upset at the deal.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Glad someone else feels this way. Thought he was much stronger on the puck than he’s shown. Sick of just watching the puck roll off his stick every time he touches it.

Why does he play so low in our own zone? It’s ineffective for the breakout and he can’t get high quick enough to cover the points. Sure enough, the one shift it resulted in a failed breakout and then they cycled to his point.
All the other bullshit I’ll excuse, but that’s just…you’re killing your team through positioning, kid.

He should have shot more and passed less. That’s really it, though. He wasn’t as bad as Giroux, i.e., passing way too much, not dumping the puck, trying to do too much.

Carter is a center. When he plays center he has an entire different game. He has more room to get speed up, and he’s a lot more danger. Putting him on wing takes away room, makes him responsible for the breakout rather than being able to come up with speed through the neutral zone, and in general is a handicap to him in ways that it is not for Giroux.

Momentum update
Vancouver-Chicago: Vancouver finished the season 7-3. Chicago finished it 5-4-1, backing into the playoffs on a final-game loss. Vancouver clearly had the momentum, and that resulted in two early goals and a shutout victory.
San Jose-Los Angeles: San Jose finished the season 7-2-1. Los Angeles finished 6-4, including losing three of their last four, including a 6-1 thrashing by San Jose. San Jose clearly had the momentum, which led to a goal 28 seconds in. LA did manage to tie the game up in the second and play to a draw over 60 minutes, but eventually the momentum resurfaced and San Jose got the overtime win.
Detroit-Phoenix: Detroit finished 4-4-2. Phoenix finished 5-3-2. Neither team has any momentum, so this series will probably feature seven games of limping along, with the winner getting crushed by a team with momentum in the second round.
Nashville-Anaheim: Nashville finished 7-2-1. Anaheim finished 7-3. They both had good momentum coming in, but after Nashville’s 4-1 win in the first round, now they have all the momentum and will probably cruise to a sweep.
Washington-New York: Washington finished 7-2-1 to seal the #1 seed. New York finished 6-3-1, but with an emotional game 82 victory to get into the playoffs. The momentum here is very close, which is why their first game was an overtime thriller. Washington won to take the momentum, but expect this one to go 6 or 7.
Philadelphia-Buffalo: The Flyers finished 3-4-3. Buffalo finished 8-1-1. This one is a no-brainer — the Flyers might not score a goal all series.
Boston-Montreal: Boston finished 6-3-1. Montreal finished 5-4-1. Both teams look very vulnerable. Montreal did win the first game, but it’s easy to take the momentum back from such a small team by playing physical and hitting them, so this one isn’t over yet.
Pittsburgh-Tampa Bay: Pittsburgh finished 8-2. Tampa Bay finished 7-3. But don’t let that fool you, Pittsburgh has much more momentum — they came from behind to finish in a tie for the division title, while Tampa Bay was in a freefall out of their division lead. Pittsburgh won the first game and will cruise. Unless Pittsburgh’s emotions are all deflated from not quite getting the division title and their momentum is stopped, then maybe it will go the other way. After the series ends, I’ll tell you who had the momentum in this one.
Is there any way to measure heart other than cutting the players open, draining their blood, and finding out their heart capacity by blood volume?

Bro Hymn, I never knew the name of it until yesterday. I wasn’t crazy about the song before and the title doesn’t do it any favors. Besides Pennywise is no match for Naked Raygun when it comes to WOAH OH HA/punk rock academy fight songs.
In all fairness to Pennywise, it was written in 1991. Otherwise known as 18 years BJS (Before Jersey Shore).
Raygun was around in the 80’s/90’s and fairly excellent. I prefer Pennywise for goals though personally.

I wouldn’t go Raygun per se. But I’d definitely go with the best breakdown ever from the ugliest, most rockinest band ever. Poison Idea. Break down starts 2:56 in. Living proof that the ugly people – the fat, the forsaken, the weird, the wasted, the gawky, and the geeky – rock the hardest.
I could also go with Russian Circles (start it at 1:28 – turns a hockey stick into a battle axe. Also around 4:00 min.in would work.)

Death to the White Belts
a). The Union song is better than Bro Hymn, which I am not a huge fan of.
b). The Ducks use Bro Hymn. No hockey team uses Maria (I Like It Loud)
c). It is a better attempt at promoting the Philadelphia Union than having the Sons Of Ben in one section doing out of place chants.
c). The Blackhawks won with an annoying goal song. What is wrong with trying it ourselves?

What happened? y’all to hung over or sleeping or something?

I always thought sporks were those weird spoons with tines like forks that the poor kids got with their school lunches … and now it’s a quiz thing???
Damn, I’m gettin’ old.
Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.

Put in Zherdev
We need to put in Zherdev, demote Versteeg, and scratch Nodl or carcillo. Carcillo is a POS in this series. He won’t fight Kaleta, and we need all the offense we can get VS. Miller. Zherdev needs to play to promote more offense.
perfect.
