Why the NHL's new TV deal with NBC, not ESPN, is great for hockey and the Flyers
When people argue in favor of hockey's return to ESPN, the most potent argument they make is the exposure that such a move would bring. After years of toiling away on Versus, that channel that everybody in America thinks they might maybe have somewhere in the depths of their television, a move back to the self-proclaimed Worldwide Leader would mean a return to the front of the consciousness of the average American sports fan.
And in a lot of ways, that argument is true. The harsh truth of the status quo in the U.S. sports television world is that if ESPN doesn't care about you, you basically don't matter, and if ESPN isn't invested in you, they don't care about you.
After yesterday's announcement that NBC Sports Group (that's NBC and the soon-to-be rebranded Versus) will hold the NHL's American TV rights for the next decade at a reported $2 billion price tag, it's clear that ESPN won't be invested in hockey until 2021, at the earliest.
That doesn't mean the status quo will hold for 10 years, though. There are several reasons to love the NHL's new deal with NBC, and there's plenty of reason to be a proud hockey fan the day after our game shunned the so-called industry leader.
The gigantic footprint of NBC Universal/Comcast. Perhaps the biggest reason to love this deal is the promotional platform that the NHL now has at its disposal. The recent purchase of NBC Universal by Comcast (a Philadelphia company, of course) brought Versus and NBC under the same ownership, but more importantly, it's widened the footprint of both parent companies.
Let's go back to that ESPN example. Sure, there's ESPN, ESPN2, ABC and that whole family of networks there, but NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol promised on Monday's conference call that hockey will be promoted prominently across the NBC/Comcast family of networks. I've already seen this in the days since the Comcast acquisition. You see Versus ads all over USA and MSNBC these days, and that looks to continue.
Just how large is that family of networks? Take a deep breath. NBC, Telemundo, Universal Sports, A&E, Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, Syfy, USA, The Weather Channel, E!, G4, Golf Channel, Style Network, Versus and 11 local sports networks (including CSN Philly). It's just a gigantic freakin' company, which is certainly good and bad in a lot of varying ways.
But in terms of the promotion of hockey and the benefit to the NHL, it's hard to imagine the commitment would have been as strong from ESPN's parent company, Disney. They boast a similarly impressive lineup to what Comcast/NBC has, but would they have made the same effort in promoting the NHL brand?
It's hard to believe they would, which brings us to the next point.
More hockey on television. ESPN was interested in getting this deal, but according to Sports Business Journal, their offer was basically a slap in the face in terms of regular season coverage of the NHL.
ESPN said it had "constructive conversations" with the NHL, "offering them the opportunity for unprecedented distribution of every game of the Stanley Cup playoffs on ESPN platforms, including authentication to broadband and mobile devices." ESPN had committed to carry one regular-season game per week.
One game a week. And it would've been on ESPN2. That's a joke. There's no wonder that, according to SBJ, the NHL didn't even return an offer to ESPN after that point. Sure, "unprecedented distribution" of every playoff game sounds wonderful, but when they're treating the regular season like a throwaway, is it even worth it?
NBC, meanwhile, has committed to much, much more. Versus and NBC will broadcast 100 regular season games next season, including a new national game on Black Friday. 100 regular season games is roughly three or four per week. That's a ton of hockey on national television, and it sounds even better in the playoffs.
They've committed to broadcasting every single playoff game on national television. Ebersol said on Tuesday that playoff games not on Versus or NBC will be on "other major NBC Universal cable channels," which leads me to believe a channel like USA will be broadcasting playoff hockey in the first round next year. (Of course, it could always be Telemundo or Golf Channel, I guess.)
Beginning in the second round of the playoffs, NBC and Versus will hold exclusive broadcast rights. Yes, that means we lose Jim Jackson and the CSN Philly team after the first round of the playoffs, but remember that for those of us outside of Philly, this means guaranteed availability of all playoff games. That's big.
The deal means that every single playoff game will be available to just about everybody in the United States, and if you're a out-of-market Flyers fan, that's a huge deal. All in all, this new deal means a lot more hockey on television. That's not a bad thing at all.
The NHL is the star player. The ultimate question when ultimately weighing the NBC vs. ESPN options: Is it worth it to be a secondary piece on the best team, or would you rather be the star player on a challenging team? Would you rather be Jannik Hansen on the Canucks or Claude Giroux on the Flyers? (Maybe Brad Richards on the Stars works better? Whatever, you get the idea.)
There's no secret that NBC/Comcast is looking to turn Versus into legitimate competition for ESPN. Retaining rights to the NHL was the first step in doing just that, and Ebersol alluded to the fact that they'll be making runs at other sports TV rights. That's not a shocker at all. Comcast clearly has unbelievably deep pockets and if any group can create something to challenge the monster that is ESPN, it's a duo of NBC and Comcast.
This initiative started with this deal on Monday and it continues in the next 90 days, when Ebersol says Versus will be re-branded into something likely more in line with the NBC name. With the foundation of the NHL, the 11 local sports networks (several of which hold local NHL broadcast rights), Notre Dame football, IndyCar, a ton of MMA stuff and some solid college football/basketball rights deals, they're off to a nice start.
Most importantly, hockey is at the very core, and if this channel NBC is building really does turn into something successful, the NHL will be right at the center of it all.
On-ice impact. More hockey on TV and greater promotion of the game and the league is great, but ultimately, this is about the money factor, and since this is the largest media deal in the history of the league, there's a lot of money coming in here. How does that impact the game on the ice?
As outlined in CBA Section 50.5.b.i, this deal could have a significant impact on the salary cap next year and beyond, which would obviously give big money teams like the Flyers the ability to spend more dollars on the roster. Of course, given that our team is owned by Comcast, there's a whole bunch of extra money in the family now. There's no hiding the fact that our team is one of the biggest beneficiaries here.
If you dislike Comcast or the Flyers or the NHL or NBC, this deal sucks. If you're a fan of any of those groups, or even just one, there's a lot to love.

Something else I take away from this is that the combined Comcast/NBC will have more negotiating power, likely allowing them to get Versus into more homes. So a lot of the people who can’t get Versus now might be able to have it soon, if NBC sort of bundles it with other channels.
Yep. No doubt about it.

So should I switch to Comcast?
Comcast just became available here. I’ve been on BrightHouse (TimeWarner), since, well since I got a cable box there really haven’t been any options until comcast started walking the streets around here asking.
I currently get 1 playoff game a day down here (florida), which means I’ve only had the chance to see game 3 of our Flyers first round. I think I caught some of game 2 online. During the regular season I get access to maybe one Verses game a week and NBCs sunday games (which started in January)
or verison fios. i know in the south jersey area, verison owns all the telephone poles that comcast runs their wires on. when verison came into the area, they said they wanted CSN philly. comcast said,“no way”. version got some wire cutters and threatened to take down all of the comcast owned wire off their poles. verison won and they even got comcast network. comcast might be a giant but verison has other ways of controlling them.
Espn’s top priorites have always been football and basketball. Acquiring rights to hockey would be destrctive in the big picture. NBC has shown a true committment to hockey. One that has been a good soil to grow this deal. ESPN would bury hockey in its avalanche of winter basketball and that’s not what we need to get the attention of the winter sports enthusiast who is either a big fan or looking to be re-introduced to the game after losing interest during the lean years and labor situations. I think this is a great launch pad for the future.
God Bless The Flyers
NO Basketball or Football
I truly believe that ESPN was doing a little bit of CYA, so when the NFL and NBA are locked out this fall, they would have something to televise. The real upside to me is that the NHL could be the ONLY professional sport playing this fall, which could also brign in new viewers.

I hate any announcer who:
a) Tries to “create” excitement by making every routine shot seem “Gretzky-esque” and every routine save seem like it was the greatest stop in the history of mankind (and both Thorne and Ererick are guilty as charged)
b) Get so busy telling stories with their broadcast partner that the game becomes secondary
C) Think they get paid by the word and therefore ramble on and on ad nauseum.
After watching a lot of HNIC coverage on the NHL Network, there are only a few American announcers who really “get” it: JJ (with Bill Clement ) is very good….Dave Strader and Darryl Reaugh are good….Al Rosen from the Rangers broadcast isn’t bad……the color guy from NESN is pretty good. I want to watch a game and enjoy it, not get annoyed by some a**clown who thinks he has to make it exciting

The production quality has drastically improved over the past 6 years, no doubt it. I still miss the local CSN Philly crew, but it’s nowhere near the pain of the early days on OLN.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
I didn’t realize ESPN’s plans for the regular season were so weak. At first, I didn’t like this deal because of its length (which I still question somewhat) and that I wanted the greater visibility that I thought ESPN would bring. But, reading this, I’m starting to feel better about life with NBC/Versus. If they really follow through with using the entire family of channels to show playoff games (like CBS does with the NCAA tournament), that would be pretty amazing. More hockey on national TV and not having to fight for airtime behind football and basketball are both very good things.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
the length
If Comcast/NBC is seriously trying to mount a challenge to ESPN’s domination, it could easily take 5 years just to get enough penetration to make ESPN even think about them. And another 5 to really grab market share from them. Which may enter into it. At first, I thought that was really long too. To me it only makes sense in the context of competing long-term with the World Leader.

As much as you guys don’t like ESPN (when it comes to hockey), I do hope this new plan doesn’t affect what we get over here in the UK. ESPN and ESPN America are the only channels that show ice hockey, I can’t complain about their broadcasting as they show multiple games every night with replays during the day.
Im sure it won’t affect the deal they have set up over here in Europe, but still I will remain nervous until they confirm schedules for next year.

I think the worse thing with ESPN is their “World-wide Leader” status. They know they have such a monopoly on sports in America that they can present this absurd offer with a straight face. They’ll spend 30 minutes wrapping up a Celtics game but only about 3 minutes covering Playoff hockey.
I’m excited about this offer because of the dedication to the NHL that NBC Universal seems to be pledging. If they get behind hockey, the country will have to respond. With promos, commercials, broadcasts, highlights on this major network and its family, more of the country will get a taste of this awesome game. The fact that every playoff game will be broadcast nationally will do the same.
The best thing that can happen to ESPN is Versus becoming more of a competitor. The less of a monopoly ESPN has, the harder it’s gonna have to work to make their network better and more fair.

They’ve been doing that for decades. At least since the early 90’s maybe even late 80’s. ESPN never gave hockey a chance. I’m glad the league told them to fuck off. Gary Buttman may suck as a Commish but this deal is awesome. Even if it’s just a great big middle finger to ESPN.

The Caps game will be on CSNWashington so it will be blacked out on Versus. But I’ve noticed that when games are blacked out, Versus doesn’t show a “backup game”, which means I’ll be stuck. Yankees/Flyers/Gunners
Salary Cap increase
If the deal is worth the $2billion for 10 years, then that roughly means an approximate increase in revenue for each team of over $6million per year.
($2b/ 10years/ 30 teams)
I am sure that the yearly amount will gradually increase over time, but I think it is reasonable that this deal alone could help raise the cap significantly. Maybe around $2-$3 million per season.
($6mil x 56% for salaries)
Which all means that the Flyers should have room next year to keep key members of this team (Leino!) and maybe have just enough left over to spend on the right mix of complementary players?

Honestly, it was a good article, but when the main point is “It’s that, or watch one game a week on ESPN2 where they butcher the names of every player”, I think most people could have figured out that NBC was the better deal.
Now NBC compared to FX, or Time Warner, those were much more interesting options. I still think FX would have been a better deal, but then, I don’t much care for VS presentation.

ESPN is worse than the Mafia and Gestapo with the way the handle programming. They think they are bigger than the game. If you want our promotion and you want to be mentioned our “news” programs you better take our low ball offer. If not we don’t care we won’t run commercials or highlights of your sport, we will continue batter our fans with slam dunks and WNBA / College Highlights because they are all part of the ESPN Family.
Don’t side with us and we will bury you behind Poker, Darts and even the lowest of the low English League Soccer.
That bully approach is ridiculous. The only thing Gary Bettmen has ever done that I like is that he stood up to the bully that is Disney/ESPN and told them to !@#$% YOU. ESPN was built on the back of NHL Hockey in the late 80’s early 90’s and this is the gratitude that the NHL receives. Go Gary Go F ESPN. I personally haven’t watch SportsCenter or as I call it Farve/Lebron Center in over 2 years.
NBC/Versus isn’t prefect but they are a partner who want to work together where is ESPN/Disney didn’t respect the NHL nor give a shit about its fan or owners and were prepared to bury the entire regular season only to cash in on the playoff ratings. A bunch of pimps who would treat our us fans like whores leaving us on in the cold on the corner until we finally come up with the money then we can get one shower and sleep on the floor like dogs.
The only think NBC needs to do is go get John Buccigross from ESPN whatever the cost. He is a young hip mainstream personality that can be the face of the NHL on their networks connecting to young and old fans and even bring in new fans from other sports with his SportsCenter recognition.
This was very intense.
But I mostly agree with you (though maybe not as passionately). Especially about the Buccigross thing. And maybe Levy?

Sabres took the scenic route, but they still MADE IT TO THE PLAYOFFS!!!1
question for everybody
I live in Ohio, and i have DIRECTV. I have purchased the Center Ice package the last 3 seasons basically just to get all the Flyers games, wich I do. The only problem is, I never get CSN Philly. I have to watch the other teams channel. And if they play a Canadian team, it is not in HD or rarely I get CSN Philly but it is not in HD aslo. It pisses me off because evey Sharks and Blackhawks game is offered on their local CSN channels. Why not Philly.. Oh and also since the playoffs have started, I get CSN Philly in HD on Center Ice.. WTF???

This happens to me too. I always just assumed it was luck of the draw but for the first 6 Phillies games (I have extra innings too) we had the other team’s broadcast. And sometimes they’ll give you both broadcasts on two different channels. Is there a reason? I don’t know.

I live in Indiana now, though originated in Ohio, and we don’t even have Versus on our Comcast cable. This is likely my university’s doing (they control my cable), but either way it sucks.

It’s complicated, but if you’re aware, CSN Philly isn’t available locally if you have satellite because they don’t use satellites to transmit the signal. It’s how they get around FCC rules, basically by using old technology from the early-90s when CSN was PRISM.
As a result, they don’t typically transmit their signal to Center Ice (or Extra Innings or League Pass, etc) either.

Here are the basics: http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Comcast-Well-Fight-FCCs-Terrestrial-Loophole-Order-106551
Only a few channels are able to take advantage of the loophole because of the infrastructure they use to distribute the channel.

What does this mean for Game Center Live? I live in Hawaii, so during the summer I am six hours behind, the winter is five.
I can’t handle the blackouts, I would understand the couple of hours the game is on t.v., but for two days, come on! I just want to watch the games when I get home from work.
Cable out here is ridiculous!
