i got to say this has been an excellent series (besides the fact that I feel we really could have swept buffalo, my biased opinion) but the hitting, intensity, close-calls, back-and-forth hockey…exciting can barely sum it all up in one word. You can just see the bad blood forming between these two clubs and should be nothing short of a spectacular finish to this series. Couldn’t ask for anything more…..well….maybe a shiny Cup to parade around with…..one series at a time tho. I know.

Let’s Go Flyers!

btw, have they been doing the Lauren Hart/Kate Smith ‘God Bless America’ intro? I haven’t seen it yet so wondered if it has just been blacked out for me.

I agree with you Legion. The only whiner I can see out there is Lindy Ruff. It has been a real good matchup so far, and good coaching from both benches. But one should know when to keep one’s mouth shut or one’s team may just lose because of it!

When they play a very dirty series it certainly does.

I am starting to understand why the entire league must of hated the Bullies so much. I don’t like my Flyers looking like a bunch of pussies standing around getting punched and not fighting back. Lavy really got the discipline into them even Carcillo. Now it is time to UNLEASH THE RAGE and THE PRONGER and start Boxcar’in these mother f’ers from Buffalo. They refs are allowing it.

Wow. Campbell really sounded like a asshole. I kind of feel for him because he really does have a thankless job. Lets be honest, no matter what, Colin Campbell is always going to be the bad guy. His decisions and suspension are always going to be second guess. There is no way he can win. So, in that sense, I can understand his frustration. He almost sounded like he wanted to say “You come and try to do my job, and see how it goes for you.” Much like a referee for a professional sports league, he is in a very tough position. Don’t envy him at all.

Right, but how often do you hear the sentiment, “Just be consistent”? You’re right in the way that one side is always going to be unhappy, but there’s countless instances where people with nothing to gain or lose are flaming him because he’s so all over the place.

Like I said earlier, can you look at the Gillies elbow, the Cooke elbow, and the Kunitz elbow, and tell me there is a 8 or 9 game difference between those? Or Downie’s hit on MacAmmond as compared to Lovejoy, is there a 19 game difference there?

I'm kind of a dick.

Sure it’s a thankless job. But how hard is it for him to spin a wheel and dole out a random punishment? If there was even an inkling of consistency in his work people could at least say “I don’t like it, but it’s in line with previous punishments”.

Can you say that now with a straight face?

by Mike B on D on Apr 22, 2011 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe. I just wonder if, even if Campbell were more consistent, would it matter? The media is always going to scrutinize him an come up with little holes here and there, in all of his decisions.

Maybe it would pipe the fans and media down a bit, but no matter what, in the eyes of the media, players, coaches, fans and GMs, Colin Campbell can do no right. He has a tough job. He decides on suspensions and fines, so he is always, no matter what, the bad guy.

Look at other leagues and compare. The NHL isn’t alone in issuing fines and suspensions. Look at the NFL when issues fines and suspensions. There is always speculation and discussion on them, but they are never as consistently blasted for their final decisions. Campbell’s justice is questioned by fans and media of teams all over the league. What’s worse is, the same inconsistency that permeates that office trickles down to the on ice officiating.

"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27

by Mike B on D on Apr 22, 2011 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

NFL fines more and suspends less. That is the approach the NHL should take. Bigger fines less suspension. Fans and even players can deal with Mutli-Millionaries losing 1% of their salary. But suspending players effects points and wins and playoff series and shouldn’t be handed out so willy nilly.

NFL has a strong model.

1st Offense FINE
2nd Offense BIGGER FINE
3rd Offense 1 – 3 Game
4th Offense 3 – 5 Game

or something like that.

I would stick to for 1st time offenders no suspensions if there wasn’t any injury. And start progressing down the offense tree for plays where someone is hurt.

Injuries should have a tree as well.

1st time offender – 1 – 5 games
2nd time offender – 5 – 10 games
3rd time offender – 15 – 20 games
4th time – Season Ban
5th time – Life-time Ban

Go a season without incident and you step down an offender level. Similar to how points come off you license.

If the NHL / NHLPA can get together to put together clearly defined Flow-Chart to replace the DGB Flow-Chart people would be less pissed.

And no Malkins (aka exceptions) to the rules.

by chrislanci on Apr 22, 2011 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

But he’s not even addressing the actual complaint people have with him. No one is arguing that he gets paid to do the “easy thing.” He gets paid to do the “right thing.” People complain because he does the “wrong thing” and does so in a completely arbitrary and standard-less manner. He’s a prick, and now he’s apparently unjustifiably self-pitying

by mantis toboggan on Apr 22, 2011 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

There are many high-profile thankless jobs. Campbell didn’t sound like this five years ago. It’s time for someone else to do this job, someone who has the will to create a consistent standard for dispensation of justice and convince the owners, players and league officials that he has it right. And someone who keeps his shit together with the public, who commands respect for the office. It’s a strange time for the league, with an unprecedented shift in priority between protecting players’ health and preserving a fast and violent game. They need someone fresh.

That is exactly what I was going to say. Honestly, from a Buffalo perspective, you got to be really happy with Kaleta so far. He is doing his job perfectly. He is getting under the Flyers’ skin, causing trouble and mucking it. Honestly, the only way to nullify him is to ignore him which is so hard when he is out there hitting everything and yapping constantly.

Or the refs actually start calling the penalties in the scrums. What is the point to ignore things and that aren’t getting called. Carcillo ignored Miller and the D-Men and got hit hit hit multiple times and HE GOT THE ONLY PENALTY anyway. The Flyers have ignored it and got them no where plus the PP sucks I rather even things out and play 4 on 4 then get punched in face and get nothing out of it. Or worse 2 minutes of wasted PP time to swing momemtum back to Buffalo.

It is embrassing to watch the Flyers the big tough Flyers team get pushed and thrown around after every whistle and just take it. It is fine in when we are winning don’t give the game away but if we aren’t then show so damn pride and fight the F back.

Playing nice gets you no where in the playoffs. Ask SCOTT STEVENS ask CLAUDE LEMIUEX ask the Red Wings GRIND LINE ask Max Talbot and even PRONGER / SOD. Ask anyone from The AVS when they won cups.

Nice guys finish last in life and especially in hockey.

This Flyers team isn’t particularly big or tough, though. They’ll push back and be physical, but rarely is that how we control games.

Also, I’d rather life my entire life without seeing a Flyers Stanley Cup than having anyone in orange and black resort to Claude Lemieux tactics.

Maybe it was stupid to put a hockey team closer to the Mexican border than the Canadian, but it still sucks for those fans — however few there might be — to lose their team.

Yeah, it’s frustrating to watch as a fan. It just doesn’t make sense, especially in Game 4. They seemed to have a fairly solid 1st, and after the 5 minute they were set on playing collapse and just trying random counters when they presented themselves for the next 15 minutes. IMO that’s too early to drop in to a shell…especially for how well they had played in the 1st IMO.

I don’t see the difficulty with it – Flyers defense has basically been top-notch. The only 2 losses were both 1 goal differences, and they continue to block shots and shooting lanes.

The team seems to think their chances of winning are exactly the same, with or without Pronger, and that’s how they should feel.
