Been listening to Till I Collapse by Eminem. Somehow I think of this team as the type that won’t give in till they literally collapse. And that makes me feel good about Game 7.
Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

Can’t wait for the drop of the puck… they’ve toyed around with Buffalo long enough, put ’em away guys, big win tonight for the Flyers!

this one looked interesting this morning as well…

I think the Devils and Kovalchuk should now sue the NHL for age discrimination. They’re essentially saying he CAN’T play until he’s 44.

While I find it absolutely hilarious that Ville didn’t listen to Danny, I’m very glad that other people did. Still, it’s too funny.

That was supposedly one of the issues people in Detroit had with Ville…he often seemed detached/disinterested and kind of just did his own thing…a lot like Z actually.

Which, don’t get me wrong, is a problem…to an extent. Of course you want to know that he gets the messages on strategy and course correction during the game but if he’s able to motivate himself and is more comfortable in his own head I don’t see that as a total negative.

Depending upon who you ask, Ville is either “comfortable in his own head” or uncoachable. Having seen the highs and lows of his performance, I think the jury is still out.

I do think it’s a problem, because he probably only got away with not listening because it was Briere. He’s on Briere’s line, so if Leino sees Briere up his game, he’ll follow Briere’s lead. But if somebody else had been giving the speech, the message might have gotten lost.

Yeah, I don’t want anybody checking out completely like that. As soon as one guy doesn’t care enough to listen, it can start a chain reaction with some of the other players that are susceptible to doing so. I understand some of these guys have to play in their own head a little bit, but when you’re in a locker room situation like that you need to force yourself to pay attention. It sounds like he isn’t even sure what Briere said, and if that’s true, to me that takes being in your own little world to the next level.

Maybe the school system in Finland is different. In the US, by the third grade kids know how to bullshit their way through an answer when asked about a lecture they weren’t really lsitening too.
“Well, you know, he just told us how important this was, and about some of his past experiences, and he tried to really fire us up to, like, take advantage of this opportunity and not let all our hard work go to waste, and stuff.”
It’s not a “total negative” but it is a rather douche-y trait to display in a team sport. I like Ville, and if he wants to be in his own world that’s up to him…but since he is on a TEAM, he should learn to act like it a little more.
It would have been much better on his part to say something non-committal about it being a great speech and that it helped fire up the team.
No wonder Lavy punched him in the head earlier this season!

Anyone see the GM of the ‘Nucks bitching about not getting any powerplays? He said that when the games are close in the last 4 games of the series the Blackhawks are getting 100% more calls than his team. Does that mean they only get the calls or they got double the calls? When you see the highlights of things that weren’t called against Chicago you see his point. They’ve been Buffalo’ing all series.
Flyers Fans: We've survived Lock-outs, Lindros and Cooperalls. If you want to get rid of us, you'll have to split an atom or two.
The refs in the playoffs haven’t been great but if there is any series that has been officiated as poorly and annoyingly as Philly/Buffalo it’s Vancouver/Chicago.
That said, I think the refs of the Pens/Lightning series aren’t too bad.

My friend from Vancouver forced me to watch a video about the inconsistent reffing in game 6.
Some of the complaining seems warrented to me.
Mourning Gagne forever.
Wow. That icing call at the end is terrible. They took away the advantage with their bullshit. Some of the calls on the video are fair (the hooking one) others are pretty terrible and I can see their concern. However, you could probably make a video like this for every game ever played in the NHL.

by mantis toboggan on Apr 26, 2011 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions
I think they icing thing is just a semantic of the rules. The cleaning crew HAS to come out the first whistle after the 10 minute mark. Sure the refs were super strict not having them come out when it was 10:01, but regardless of what the next whistle was from the cleaning crew was coming out
There isn’t an official provision for it in the rulebook though, that’s what’s so strange. It’s really a guideline, I think.
But doing a search of scoresheets, it seems that it happens once in a while. They score it as Icing,Rink Repair.

The after the whistle roughing reminds me of the Sabres. I have never seen as one way of calling scrums in front of the net as I have this year. Pronger gets literally cross checked, slashed and punched in the face and he is the only guy who gets a slashing call. Chicago is also getting away with a lot of after the whistle shit.

A fair number of those would be really ticky tack to call, but some of them are pretty bad. I don’t know if there’s a video showing the other side, and the Canucks might have gotten away with a few things, but that seems like a lot of non calls when you see that Vancouver took twice as many penalties in the game as Chicago did.
by DragonGirl0583 on Apr 26, 2011 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions
ISome of those calls are bad (especially the icing at the end), but the Canucks also have to examine themselves a bit on this one. It seems like they allowed themselves to get outplayed by a vastly inferior team in Games 4 and 5 and even though the Canucks played much better and dominated Game 6 from a Corsi perspective, bad breaks, luck, and the officials’ impact are now increased.

Regular Season:
Philly man-down + Buffalo PPs: 592
Buffalo man-down +Philly PPs: 595
Series:
Buffalo PPs: 29
Philly PPs: 32
I see no disparity here.
On the Mike Weber bandwagon!
Sabres took the scenic route, but they still MADE IT TO THE PLAYOFFS!!!1
Also for fun:
Chi man-down + Van PP: 551
Van man-down + Chi PP: 589
Series:
Chi PP: 27
Van PP: 16
Using regular season numbers, Chicago should be recieving 6.9% more PPs than the Canucks, but they are in fact recieving 69% more.

Tonight, Vancouver gets 12 power play opportunities and Chicago gets one.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
But that one PP? A 5-on-3. 1-0 win for the Hawks, after Crawford gets hurt in the first minute and Turco pinch-hits a shutout.
Book it.
If a team gets two penalties at once to create a full 2-minute 5-on-3 and doesn’t score in that time, does it go down as just one power play?
I think he’s referring to the after whistle scrums. The stuff not being called.
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
Well yes, but this implies that either the Sabres are gaming the system (in which case why aren’t the Flyers) or the Flyers get away with just as much.
On the Mike Weber bandwagon!
Sabres took the scenic route, but they still MADE IT TO THE PLAYOFFS!!!1
I won’t say either. Sabres aren’t really gaming the system, but they’re pushing to the line of the rule at times. The Flyers are doing it at different times.
I’m not counting instances of who got away with what, but I’d say it balances out. It’s frustrating to see what the refs let go from each team. Sabres are getting away with murder after the whistle. the Flyers are doing their thing during play.
Welcome to the playoffs.

I see no disparity here
Unless you fail to watch the actual games.
What has actually been called is not what anyone is disputing, but rather, at least through my orange tinted glasses, I am seeing Buffalo get away with way more scrumming crap. And although everyone in Buffalo believes Richards should be banned from the league it doesn’t wash some of the horse-shit calls I have seen get called on the Flyers and not called on the Sabres. One specific example is a really nice tussle between Pronger and Meyers which was dead even in nastiness between them both ended in a slashing minor to Pronger, even after taking a straight arm punch to the face way after the refs got involved. How only one guy comes away from an honest roll around with a minor penalty is the most frustrating thing you can ever watch.

I see no disparity in those numbers, either. But the officiating — as far as what gets called and what doesn’t — has been horrible for both sides in all but game 6. I don’t think there was anything in game 6 that was biased or just a terrible call. Other games, well I’d prefer not to rehash it. Water under the proverbial bridge.

Confused
Can someone explain to me what these stats mean? I assume that adding together the number of times one team is shorthanded against all opponents throughout the year with the number of power plays another team has against all opponents thoughout the year supposedly provides some sort of measuring stick, but how valid can that possibly be? There are far too many variables involved, such as the length of some of the PP or SH situations. Even disregarding that (Say you used total time on PP for team A and added it to total time SH for team B), I still don’t see how those numbers give you any indicator of how a specific series ‘should have’ been called. Far too many variables here for my tastes.
They are raw numbers for amount of penalties taken + amount of penalties drawn. Combines how good a team is at drawing penalties with how often their opponent takes them.
Just to tease it out a little more, hopefully clarify a bit:
A team like Pittsburgh both takes a lot of penalties and draws a lot of penalties (2nd and 5th, respectively). There games are expected to have a high power play totals. However, that will be less true against a team like Boston, who takes very few penalties (4th in the league) and draws very few (also 4th).
When we add the numbers together, it shows us both the frequency we expect the penalties to be called based on their prior performance, but we also expect the proportion to remain the same. If the play and officiating remained constant, the disparity wouldn’t be as great as we are seeing.
For the record, that’s why I agree with Ubi. The officiating in our series hasn’t been lopsided, it’s just been sub-par. I don’t think it benefits either team, and if it does, I doubt it’s Buffalo. They have been letting them play in the second half of the game and we’ve carried ES play.
Thank you for the further explanation. Though I suspect you are correct that it hasn’t been lopsided, it certainly has ‘felt’ lopsided in some games. And Steven Colbert tells me to trust the truthiness that I feel in my gut rather than pay attention to annoying things like ‘facts’. So I’ll go on ‘feeling’ that the officials have big money riding on Buffalo in this series.
THAT’s what I thought! Holding the Cup and standing by the Obamas… so odd.

My own lil world of sports and music has collided tonight. I will be running out to a concert in the middle of the game and then by the magic of the DVR coming back and watching the end. Going to the show with 5 Rags fans and if one of them even shows me their phone they’re dead, you hear me, f-ing dead.

If BSH were filling out the lineup card he would be.
On the Mike Weber bandwagon!
Sabres took the scenic route, but they still MADE IT TO THE PLAYOFFS!!!1
It seems that Pannacio is saying that it’s true so good news.

Amen to that.

They’d be a lot more screwed if you stopped spotting them 3-goal leads.

If the Sabers were smart, they wouldn’t score enough to get him pulled. It’s clear they’re unable to handle the consequences of a Flyers goaltender swap.

I know. I’m joking.
When the Flyers first came into existence, the original owners (Ed Snider among them) had a “Name the team” contest. One of the owners’ wives actually came up with “Flyers” after the contest was well underway. But they actually awarded the prize to a boy who suggested “Fliers.”
The name “Flyers” was suggested because the team was originally going to be modeled after the fast, skilled, smooth-skating Canadiens. The original Flyer teams had many smooth-skating French-Canadian, gentlemanly players like Jean-Guy Gendron, Claude “Pepsi” Laforge (the only player ever to wear #16 aside from Bobby Clarke) and Andre Lacroix (the future all-time leading scorer of the World Hockey Association).
Unfortunately for those Flyer teams, they kept meeting up with the St. Louis Blues in the playoffs. The St. Louis BLues had the notorious Plager brothers and other big, tough guys like Noel Picard. They consistently kicked the crap out of the Flyers every spring. Meanwhile, the dirty-but-good Big Bad Bruins were winning Cups. Ed Snider finally had enough and said, “I want size and I want toughness.”
And now you know… the REST of the story!
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I thought Snider specifically asked for “size, grit and truculence.”

my reply was directed at ‘Sabers’ guy, but still, that’s interesting and something i didn’t know.

I still have the words form the 25th anniversary tape echoing in my head: “Noel Picard sucker-punched Claude LaForge. He never played again in the NHL. And he just came from behind . He went down in a pool of blood. I wasn’t used to that type of thing. I basically made up my mind and told our people, ‘We might not be able to come the great scorers and the great skaters, because we were an expansion club. But we could come up with guys who could beat people up, if that’s what it took.’ I don’t want a Philadelphia Flyers team intimidated ever, ever again.”
Best. VHS. Ever.

No joke…in game 6 a part of me was hoping Leighton would give up a few goals right off the bat so he would get pulled (which is exactly what happened). I knew no matter what he was going to give up a bunch, my thinking was I’d rather they happen all at once so we can pull Leighton and have ample time to make up the deficit. The last thing I wanted was to go into a tie game in the 3rd period with the Flyers depending on Leighton to keep the puck out.

NHL: “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” is what Flyer fans call whoever is starting in net for that night’s playoff game
Eagles next starting QB: "East-West Shrine Game Legend" Mike Kafka
Flyers: Waiting for The Marquis DSOD's first goal
Phillies: starting off well.
Sabres lineup changes
Take it for what it’s worth. Says Kaleta and Grier likely not playing tonight.

Sarauj, Latvija!
It gets more interesting:
Andrej Sekera practiced full-go, and I anticipate Ruff sitting Butler and activating Sekera for Game 7.

though considering the media stonewalling Ruff could very well be starting Phil Housley tonight.

Anybody know how to take two youtube videos and splice parts of them together to make one video? :-p

Though I’ll bet it’s probably easier on a mac, they’re good at multimedia stuff like that…
I’m just nostalgic for an old jumbotron clip from the Spectrum, and want to combine the “I’m Mad As Hell” clip from Network with the “Let’s Go Flyers” chant like they used to do.

Yeah I was going to say its pretty easy with a Mac. Don’t know about Linux or PCs.

Not that you should reduce your Lindy Ruff hatred, but there is a fun video of him trying to kill Billy Smith on behalf of the rest of the NHL.

Sorry guys...
I actually got an interview, so I had to shave the playoff beard.
Defending Carter until 2021...
Thanks. I figure the hockey gods knew I needed a job to pay for next year’s season tix.
Defending Carter until 2021...
One of the few instances where shaving a playoff beard does not upset the hockey gods is during a period of extended unemployment.
Defending Carter until 2021...
Dude, I wrestled (poorly) for the Hill School. Zach and Orion Doll used to scrub the mat clean with my face. I’ve had enough of THAT.
Defending Carter until 2021...
Clearly, the first interview didn’t have enough beard to get you hired on the spot.
Oh, I mean congrats.
Congratulations!

Has there been any news at all on the extent of Carter’s injury? Or is he just day-to-day with a lower body injury?
he was ruled out of the series but he’ll be day-to-day for all eternity. (~3 weeks)

Speaking of injuries, does Nodl have a concussion? Thought I saw someone (Panotch, maybe) tweet yesterday that he thought maybe he had one and that is why he’s been sitting but was this ever confirmed?
It was Carchidi. Looked it up, someone asked him if it was safe to say Nodl had a concussion. His reply was that it seems like a strong possibility. But I don’t know how much I trust Carchidi. No, actually I do know- not that much.
