ECSF GAME 1: BRUINS AT FLYERS THIRD PERIOD THREAD
While not much is going well right now, let's all take some time to think about how nice it is to have these two around.
The Bruins' multi-goal lead is cut into by JVR just before the period ends. Ah, memories.

Look, you’re clearly a football fan. There is a difference between “sucking” and “average NHL goaltender”.
Also, it’s really easy to blame the goalie for every goal. It’s a lot harder to see teh blown coverage, the terrible coaching, and the unstoppable deflections.
But since you won’t get over your hatred, why should I speak truthfully and unbiasedly about goalies?

I’m sorry. I do not hate Boosh and I have had quite a few drinks. I appreciate everything he has done for us over the years, but the love he gets on this site just makes me laugh. It comes down to management leaving us in a position to play Boucher as a starter. He is a great backup but not a starter. Just really frustrated with this game.

We can agree there. I’ve wanted Tomas Vokoun for years. Brian Boucher is a backup, which is why re-signing Leighton didn’t make sense to me.

I actually think he should have started Boosh all along, but definitely not pulled Bob once Bob was in.
However, Boosh had to go after goal 5 tonight, and also in game 5.
What I would REALLY disagree with (and did in Game 6) is starting Leighton now. But I would not put that past Lavi.

Poor matchups led to at least three of the goals. He has control over who he puts on the ice against the other team when he’s at home, and for some reason, he’s chosen to out HBL or the fourth line out against the Horton-Krejci-Lucic line.

He thought more about having the flyers play with an edge.
Physically overpowering them and expecting the Bruins to be timid, Instead of the man to man match ups
The flyers are focusing on creating nicks and bruises, while the Bruins are focusing on skating past the Flyers

Late, but…
He isn’t matching up the Flyers players effectively with whatever Bruins players Julien is playing for starters. As others pointed out, that’s resulted in goals.
The D doesn’t seem to be supporting the goaltender much, which means he didn’t learn much from the Sabres.

It’s because the Phillies won today. I’m telling you. There’s only enough luck to power one team at a time. Only twice this month have the Phils and Flyers won on the same day. (Luckily, one of those times was Game 7.)

Just curious as to what capacity he is filling for you guys right now. Does he have scoring/grinding ability? He seems like a smallish Godard-type player.
Who is he playing in place of? Thanks.

Hey, that’s reserved for my team, the Pens! Honestly though, it’s Game 1. I trust Laviolette to make the appropriate adjustments and for the entire team to be ready to kick some Boston behind. One game guys, one game.
That’s what I say about game 1 in any series – at the end, one team will be up 1-0. That’s all it means.
The series doesn’t get real until game 2.

And even then, look at the teams that have come back from 2-0 deficits. Even 3-0 and 3-1 aren’t guarantees.
In 2000, the Flyers came back from an 0-2 hole against Pittsburgh (losing the first two games at home) to win 4-2. Then, in the next round, they blew a 3-1 series lead against New Jersey and lost.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I’m not worried about one game. And I think the Flyers have enough talent to play in spite the coach who at this point I’d trade in for the inanimate carbon rod.

Awww….as you yourself said, one game. Laviolette is too cerebral not to make adjustments and I fully expect your guys to come out flying next game. And, if there is a higher deity who is merciful, this series will not get to 7 games and you will send the Bruins packing and soon.
Refusing to see SOD as a liability, starting Leighton, and now the Zac Rinaldo Experiment suggests that Laviolette overvalues the “intangibles”. Albeit hard to quantify, I believe there is value in these things but they do not trump actual hockey skills; instead they serve to enhance these skills. I have a hard time believing Laviolette is a more cerebral coach which he doesn’t even necessarily have to be as many decisions he has made required no serious tactical acumen, in fact and this what I find disconcerting, they fall under the rubric of “no brainer”.
My .02
Continuing to play O`Donnell isn’t nearly as big of a failure as the other things. In fact, I have no problem continuing to dress O`Donnell, but McCarthy has to realize that in multiple games – but not every game – O`Donnell doesn’t deserve the ice time he gets.
Instead of Rinaldo, the team should dress Syvret and use DSOD in the offensive zone while using O`Donnell on PK and in his own zone. O`Donnell isn’t terrible, he’s just not playing well lately. That doesn’t mean scratch him, it means use him and DSOD, and do it more effectively.

As I said, the Leighton decision was a head-scratcher and I don’t know why Bobrovsky wasn’t backing Boucher up. And yes, even Rinaldo is a weird decision. Anyway, at worst, this is Game 1. There is still plenty time for him to make the appropriate changes. Imagine if this was Game 6 and we were talking about cuts for Game 7. Whole different story. Maybe as an outsider it’s different for me but I have a lot of faith in your coach. It’s one game guys.
Isn’t Sean O’Donnell playing on the third pairing? Or am I mistaken?
I was prepared for another long, nerve racking dogfight before today anyway. That said the Bruins gave the Flyers trouble last year and they only got better since then, so I also believe it’s well within reason that a quiet but well played 4-1 exit could be in store for the Flyers. The one thing I didn’t factor into any of the these “projections” was unforeseeable emergence of Bizaro Lavy.

The D looked truly awful today. Mind you, the goaltending was bad. But the D let the goalies down.
I like Carle very much. But I suspect that cycling Pronger back in has messed up Carle’s game. This reminds me (in a thankfully not-so-obvious way) of trying to bring Lindros back in 2000.
Set your JVR in 2011.
Everyone looked awful today. If Jim Mora were coaching the Flyers, he’d say,
Well, what happened was, that second period we got our ass kicked. In the second period, we just got our ass totally kicked. We couldn’t do diddly poo offensively. We couldn’t score off the rush. We couldn’t pass the puck; we didn’t try to pass the puck. We couldn’t complete a pass – we sucked. The second period, we sucked. We couldn’t stop the Bruins. Every time they got the puck, they went down and scored. We got our ass totally kicked in the second period – that’s what it boiled down to. It was a horseshit performance in the second period. Horseshit. I’m totally embarrassed and totally ashamed. Coaching did a horrible job. The players did a horrible job. We got our ass kicked in that second period. It sucked. It stunk.

You have a a lot of fans all over the planet who can’t watch every game.
Now, we are hockey fans – we know that you won’t win every game.
BUT, we would really appreciate it if you can play competitively in each game. It got really boring watching you the last few weeks of the regular season and not see wins, or at least a good effort. It’s the playoffs now – you know how to play this time of year.
We’ll get over one game like this (eventually), but no more.

It is hard to blame Boucher when you have the 4th line taking defensive zone draws against the Bruins’ top line and Danny Briere spending over 7 minutes of even strength ice time against the same line. It does not matter if you have Ti Thomas in net, that is a disaster waiting to happen. And sure enough, a disaster happened.
Boucher did not have a good game, but it is insane to blame him anymore than the rest of the team and Laviolette.

I’m not blaming Boosh for the loss, i’m just saying he didn’t help and that he was really leaky. That was the worst game I’ve seen the team play since we got spanked by the Panthers before the all-star break, which sadly was a game i paid to go to. Lavs didn’t help either by taking zero advantage of having last change. He has done a pretty poor job of coaching all-around for most of the playoffs. I’m getting really tired of the revolving door in the crease, awful line matchups, stupid roster moves (Apparently Rinaldo > Holmstrom/Wellwood/Testwuide), etc. Everyone on the team and coaching staff needed a wakeup call, and hopefully today’s game was it.
