Anyone listen to 610 WIP gargano & macnow - rant.
It's possible I'm just bitter. Don't get me wrong, I love the Phils, but does it bother anyone else that all Philly sports talk stations are pretty much Phillies sports talk? It's bad enough that ESPN hates hockey, but even the local sports talk? They dismiss the Flyers, admit that " I watched the first period then the shoot out, my focus is on the Phillies. Its all about them, nothing else matters," and it's almost insulting as a hockey fan.
Imagine it's October and the only thing that is on the radio is the Eagles or Flyers, despite the Phillies playoffs. No, that just wouldn't happen, and that's what is happening now. every. day.
THE PHILLIES ARE AT GAME 4/162!
THE FLYERS HAVE 3 GAMES LEFT and are fighting for FIRST SEED.
Cmonnnnnnnnnnnnn....could just be me, but it bothers me. This is a 1st place team and they deserve more respect than this (despite recent play). How can we consider ourselves a hockey town if the only time the media talks about hockey is DURING the playoffs? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying our fanbase sucks because the Flyers have GREAT fans. It just bothers me how little attention they get.
Thank God for this site.

At some point, we need to realize that these media are in it for the money. The Phillies are the ticket in town and so naturally every news outlet is going to be dedicated to covering them in every way possible. The Flyers have a strong and dedicated fanbase, but because hockey is a niche market, your casual Eagle/Phillies fans far outweigh your casual hockey fan. (actually, I’ve never personally met a “casual” hockey fan in my life, except come playoff time)
Flyers fans stick with their team regardless of news coverage. They know this.
Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.
Agreed. Remember as well, the Phils are the most recent team to win a championship, so they are going to get the most coverage until someone else wins one. This is true anywhere, really.

Sort of this. It’s actually much more complex that that.
I distinctly remember as a youth that Philadelphia was a baseball town. The rise of the NFL has been gradual, if steady. But it disturbed me when everyone would say in the early 2000s that Philadelphia was an NFL town. That Philadelphia was a “small market franchise.” I thought this was absurd. But after nearly 10K of losses, you lose some of the street cred you once had.
The last five years has simply been righting the ship, loosening the inner fan that was always there, but was frustrated. Proving truly that Philly is a Big Market Franchise (just check out how many Phils caps/shirts are in evidence for Phils road games in DC or Atlanta. Etc.).
So the announcers play into the Phils resurgence. But when 45,000 people are there for 81 games, there is a reason the announcers do this.
Don’t flame me for writing this on a Flyers blog. The Flyers are two “children”, don’t make me choose between the two. And it is of course also true that many of the announcers are just too stupid to understand the beauty (as well as the intensity) of hockey.
Set your JVR in 2011.
I doubt this will make any sense, but in terms of professional sports in Philadelphia (at least from my vantage point)
Phillies are the oldest child.
Eagles are the youngest child.
Flyers are the middle child.
Sixers and Union are the red-headed step-children.
This is not to say this is how I see them (it is not), but I think this is how Philadelphia thinks about them. If they were to group them like this. Which I doubt many will because this is admittedly very strange and not people would think to do it. But if they did it, I think this is how they would do it.

That last paragraph may actually be more senseless than the first five lines above it. Amazing.

I’m glad most of 610 doesn’t talk hockey, because, well, most of them don’t know it well enough to make it a good listen anyway. And the general caller knowledge is horrible at best. I never listen to 610 unless I’m driving back from a Flyers game and they have to post game interviews on…
So no, it doesn’t bother me, it actually makes me happy.
Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!
Is this the right room for an argument?
That’s a very good point too. They aren’t hockey-knowledgeable. (Neither are most of the those who call in.)

610 callers in general are not knowledgeable. It doesn’t matter the sport. I had to curb my listening to small bursts because of this. It’s magnified during football season, where they crawl out of the woodwork…

Agreed. The callers are bad for every sport.

Let’s see – a team that has more losses than any other sports franchise now has what might be the greatest pitching rotation baseball has and might ever see. There’s no history in the making there.
and a hockey team who got the 7th seed on the very last game of last season, comes back from down 0-3 in a series vs the bruins and becomes the 3rd team in nhl history to do such a thing, goes to the stanley cup finals, and then becomes number 1 seed all season long this year?
yeah not much going on there either……..barf

The Flyers have been the most successful team in this city since their inception. Negativity is what sells.

The Flyers sell out every game… Negativity isn’t the only thing that sells…

She’s referring to radio…not ticket sales. Two different things.

Yeah, media in this town is largely fueled by negativity. Eskin, Missanelli, etc. People wonder why Eskin still has a show when all he does is rip teams not named the Eagles.
The average everyday rational fan doesn’t call WIP; that isn’t their base.

TBH, the Phillies are 3-0 and the Flyers are um… negative… to say the least right now. What it comes down to is the size of the fan base. Flyers wont pick up steam until mid to late round two of the playoffs.

The Flyers I recall were the city’s champion in the 70’s. It’s the Phillies time now. And speaking on behalf of those for whom baseball is there first love, we waited a long time for this and have suffered with wandering through desert for a lifetime. You have no idea what it feels like to live with 6 months of watching suck in the sport you love most for 20 plus years. In fact if your a hockey first Flyers fan, Ed Snider has spoiled you rotten – he built you a powerhouse, always contending hockey team. Do you ever think that we baseball first Phiilies fans ever fanatisized about having an owner like him. Christ, you don’t even really know what it feels like to almost make the play-offs because the Flyers are always in the play-offs. You’ve gotten to watch quality hockey your whole life – aside from a few years here and a few years there (seperated by 20 plus years) and now, I have only had a average to downright dreadful baseball to fill up my summers.
Totally understandable but its not like both teams are 3 games in. Shit, the Eagles get more talk than the Flyers do… AND the Sixers do too… If we didn’t have this site, I’d be stuck with arguing with my friends all day—-and no one wants to hear a legitimate argument about why Leighton needs to be called up.

this makes sense, but i guess i just don’t get why there wouldn’t be more of an even mix. sure it’s phenomenal that we have such a good baseball team recently, but there doesn’t have to be 100% devotion to ONE team at a time. the flyers are in first place in the conference! as a city we should show support for all of our teams on some level, but especially when they are performing and playoffs are right around the corner. I’m not saying I resent the Phils being covered, I think they deserve it. However, I was saying that it bothers me the Flyers have 3 games LEFT and get maybe 5% of the coverage that the Phils do when they are 4 games IN.
I suppose in the end I would rather listen to intelligible sports talk than half-assed no-idea-what-they’re-talking-about Flyers talk though

You just mentioned the reason I stopped watching baseball in the mid-80’s. If they didn’t care enough to put a good team out I did not care to follow them. And with them, away went baseball from my life.

Good thing you weren’t ever a Pens fan, then.
Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.
But I stayed with the Eagles and Flyers during their lean times. Why? Because they at least tried to win. Even if they did not do it right, they did try.

The Eagles? Really? Norman Braman certainly didn’t try to put together winning teams. You’re venturing into some subjective territory here. The Phils made mistakes, yes, like a lot of teams in this city. When Giles was deposed and Monty took over, things changed with the mentality of the ownership group. I hate a lot of the ownership groups; I’m not terribly fond of Lurie, but he’s not Al Davis. Bottom line: I’m a fan of the team and all that other stuff is secondary.

i do agree about them not being too hockey-knowledgeable too…i guess it makes sense.
i just want to be able to listen to some good hockey talk during the day and it bums me out that i can’t. it also bums me out that they don’t get the love they deserve.
gah

When the local sports talk radio hosts do talk hockey, it is some of the dumbest drivel you will ever hear. Then again, so is their conversations about baseball. And football. And basketball. And tiddlywinks.
Basically, do not waste your time with these nuts.

COMPLETELY off topic here,
Is your name a reference to cheed and cambria and taking back sunday? just curious.
yes….don’t judge haha. it’s a username i’ve had for years and it just stuck despite musical taste changes
At home in the Illadelph.
wasnt going to judge. i never got into taking back sunday. but i thought the first two coheed records were really good, the third was decent and had a couple really good songs, and everything after that kinda sucked. i used to have a radio show in college and got to sit down with them and interview them for my show. they are actually pretty good guys. where does your musical taste fall these days?
90% of the callers are just downright unintelligent sports fans. And the guys talking aren’t the brightest bulbs in the shed also. Last years playoff run was amazing, I spent about 2 hours in the car every day during the summer going from home to work to school to work to home and I got to listen to great stuff—-guys like Billy Clement calling in and people actually talking about the Flyers. If they aren’t talking Flyers in playoff season… its off to 92.5 XTU for me :-)
