Shootouts Suck
I was playing around with excel to see how bad we are at shootouts compared to everyone else and I found out some pretty interesting information.
Total Wins:
Vancouver 52, Philly, Pit, SJ, and Washington all with 46. Okay, Us, Pit, Washington (and the Bruins) are the class of the East. Those numbers make sense.
Overtime win % (picking up the extra point):
Pit 64% (4th in NHL), Wash 54% (11), Philly 35% (27), Boston 21% (30).
Shootout win % (picking up the lock-out point):
Pit 75% (5), Wash 40% (22), Flyers 30% (27), Boston 25% (29)
Us and the Bruins really suck at shootouts and in OT. The Pens dominate the extra session while the Caps are decent in OT and are mehhh in shoot outs.
If games ended in regulation (simulating playoffs- no 4 on 4 in playoffs) here are the top teams in the league (by win %)
Van 83%, Philly 78%, Boston 77%, Washington 75%. Pit is in 10th place with 65%. The interesting thing here is OT games played in general: Wash 24, Pit 22, Philly 17, Bos 14. This translates into NON OT Wins - playoff regulation wins: Van 45, Bos 41, Philly 40, SJS 36, Wash (10) 33, Pit (12) 32.
There is a lot of information here and I don't know what it all means but here are some things that I do know.
1. Pittsburgh and Washington play for OT points late in games (can I say that?)
2. Overtime sucks
A few positive things to think about heading into the playoffs when it isn't going great all-in-all:
1. We've got a goalie. His name is Bob. He's the guy.
2. Zherdev is back (for now)
3. We really did the same thing last year
/trying to keep it positive

As I wrote a week or so ago, shootouts are awful. Many others agreed. Maybe one day the league will nix them, and we will benefit from it.

We need 10-minute overtimes instead, and perhaps one of the suggestions here:

I suggested 10 minute OTs in the fanpost I wrote 10 days ago. They sound like a great idea, and many support them.

after watching the OT the other night, my support for longer OT grew. I’ve heard this point brought up before and I fully agree
- why decide the winner of a hockey game with a skills competition?
10 minue OT would make a lot more sense than 5 anyway. 5 minutes is a quarter of a period! I suppose it’s to up the urgency to score, but 10 minutes would be just as exciting to watch. longer OT would also award the better TEAM with the extra point. a clutch team with better staying-power deserves a win much more than a team with a tricky penalty-shot taker.
the moral of the story: i hate shoot-outs. save them for all star weekend.

%s
NFL uses a 15-min OT (another quarter’s worth) and NBA uses 5-min OT (41.7% of a quarter’s time). NHL OT is 5-min (only 25% of a regulation period). 25% < 41.7% and 100%.
Seems henious…

not to mention the average length of games:
nfl – about 3 hours
mlb – about 3 hours
nhl – about 2.5 hours
nba – about 2.5 hours
so the games that last the longest actually have longer overtimes
in the case of baseball, they could go on indefinitely.
you would think they could at least extend the OT another 5 minutes. why have a shootout other than to shorten the game? doesn’t make sense to me

How long is the average NFL overtime, though? Just because they have 15 minutes doesn’t mean they play more OT than the NHL.

thats true, it is easier to kick a field goal than it is to score a goal.
however i still think they should either extend OT to 10 mins or at the very least add an additional 5 minute OT before going to a shootout. 5 minutes just isn’t long enough. the idea of playing 65 minutes of hockey (which is probably pretty close based on the need for extra time) only to decide the winner based on individual shooting skills? Its like changing NBA OT to a game of horse
