Had no idea SDOD was dealing with Bell’s Palsy ! I had that a few years ago as a result of a viral infection. It’s not debilitating, but it’s a major disruption especially with the eye. For about 2 or 3 days – I literally could not blink one eye. Two things happen – if it’s allergy season, your eye is always tearing. If not, it’s forever dry and a bit painful. In my case, couldn’t keep it dry or see through it.

Tried to drive to a doctor’s appt for it (woke up with the condition) and damn near didn’t make it. For me it was worse because I have only one good eye and that was the palsy side. So I could only see well for about 30 seconds at a time.

Fortunately it improves with time and meds, like Prednisone or other cortico-steroids. Danny will be fine, but that story hit a nerve (see that little pun, there?).

It seems the Philly.com readers want the Flyers to start dumping players like the Blackhawks did last summer even though we have cap space. 50% roster turnover year after year is a good model for success. Never has a second run playoff loss been looked at as such a complete an utter failure the Flyers must completely dismantle their young core.

I agree with this. The thirst for a Cup after all these years distorts the problems in the days after the season is over. The press needs to fill space so when things are bad it’s good business to make them seem worse. Combine that with the pre-fab storylines (goaltenders; leadership) and the fact that the Flyers are one of the NHL’s high-profile teams and it makes for a lot of angst and words every spring.

by OrangeNblacK on May 11, 2011 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

He doesn’t get a fresh start from me but that doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t be willing to admit it, if he was playing well.

Much like the Mezaros debate at the beginning of this season, my problem with Versteeg is the fact that the Flyers used a 1st Rd draft pick to get him and that he is making $3 mil and, imo, has not lived up that cost. Is it fair to judge him on those criteria? He had no control over what the Leafs and Flyers decided he was worth? But for the role that he has played on the Flyers thus far, he hasn’t been worth a 1st Rd draft pick or his $3 mil. cap hit.

With the way the season ended and the fact that Versteeg added very little down the stretch and in the playoffs, he was a terrible pick up. Fortunately, that does not mean he won’t show improvement after getting more time to adjust to the team and the role he is asked to play.

If he isn’t here next season, I won’t be upset in the slightest (especially if he was used in a trade to acquire a goalie [wishful thinking, I know]) but I also think he has serious potential to show that he is a decent player and can be a contributing part of the team.

@Mitchman88 on Twitter

by Mitchell Green on May 11, 2011 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

But for the role that he has played on the Flyers thus far, he hasn’t been worth a 1st Rd draft pick or his $3 mil. cap hit.

Roles and value are two totally different things. Back to Mez, his value was 4 million—-roughly that of a 2-3 defender. His role was 5th pair defender. He was good enough to accomplish both. Steeg’s value of a 1st/3rd pick or 3.1 million wasn’t his role. His role, as far as I’m concerned, was to come in and be physical with Richie—-which he did not do. His trade value is now irrelevant in how he plays, but unfortunately for him it is the criteria he will be compared to for his time in philly.

by OrangeNblacK on May 11, 2011 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Meszaros was good enough to play as a 3/4 defenseman? This is based on him beating third and fourth line competition?

I did a horrible job of explaining it and I don’t know how to land that plane… but the point i was making a bad attempt at making is that role and value are two different things. Claude Giroux’ role is way more important than his value of 3.75 million.

by DLJr on May 11, 2011 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

If you don’t assign the contract then the two get mixed up. Is Versteeg’s value 3.1 million or a 1st and 3rd pick? Or a combonation of both? What if we re-sign him for 2.8 for 2 years after next year… Is his value the 2.8 or the 1st and 3rd picks? There is a lot of grey area.

by OrangeNblacK on May 11, 2011 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I already separated the contract from the pick. When you look at a players contract, you evaluate it’s value base on the players performance and role. If you were willing to trade for the contract, that contract still goes against your cap space and pay roll. Therefore, if the organization was willing to take that contract and player, they should be evaluated by that contract. No one put a gun to the Flyers head and said get Meszaros. They went out and got him knowing his contract and where he’d fit in their plans.

Versteeg is an RFA in 2013, at the time, if he signs a new contract with the Flyers, you evauiate his play under the new contract against that new contract. While he is with the Flyers now, you evaluate him under the contract the Flyers accepted with him. It’s not like the Flyers have a blindfold on for contracts when they make these trades.

So you think it is wrong when Pronger is compared to his 3 first round picks and not his 4.91?

by OrangeNblacK on May 11, 2011 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

No…I’m judging a player that year versus his contract. And how role and value are related when you talk about player/contract evaluations in certain contexts.

It’s about putting the analysis in context. If you want to judge Pronger’s career in Philly, then I’m all for bringing in the draft picks, who they would have been, and how they projected over that same time frame versus Pronger’s value over his career here. But for draft picks, I think you have to look at the entire length of Pronger’s stay here, not how he played this year versus his Cap hit.

by DLJr on May 11, 2011 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

In foresight, what does Pronger—-or the team with Pronger on it—- have to do in order to justify the trade?

by OrangeNblacK on May 11, 2011 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s a matter of opinion. You’d have to look at what the picks would have done, or the value of picks. And I also don’t judge Pronger on failings of the team/organization; meaning if the team doesn’t win a cup with Pronger here, that doesn’t mean the trade was bad. I wasn’t a huge fan of the contract given to Pronger though, or more to the length. The other thing you have to consider was, do you want to include the Flyers being able to extend Pronger as part of the trade, or do you exclude that?

But, regardless of all that, I haven’t done the leg work with the picks yet, so I don’t know.

In five years how do you even go about evaluating those picks? There is nothing to say who the Flyers would have taken… Shit, for all we know we could have valued Ranford as a top pick but knew no one else wanted him and he could be a stud (thats like 3 major reaches there, but the point is we don’t know the logic)

by OrangeNblacK on May 11, 2011 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

No but you can say who was drafted around their spot, the salaries they were given, and their performance in those years. So I think there is enough information available to at least make a case.

by DLJr on May 11, 2011 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

My personal way of looking at it: I evaluate the player against the most recent price paid for him.

If the most recent transaction was a contract signing, then I evaluate him against his salary — is he better or worse than I’d expect for that money?

If the most recent transaction was a trade, then I evaluate him against the pieces given up. If Versteeg signs a $3M/yr deal and then gets traded for a first round pick, that trade is a declaration that he is worth more than $3M/yr. If he only plays like a $3M/yr player then he is costing the team a first round pick.

Think of it the other way — if the Flyers had traded Mike Rathje plus a 1st round pick for a 3rd round pick two years ago, the team they traded him to wouldn’t complain all year long that they weren’t getting $3.5M worth of value from him, because they have no right to expect that they get value from the player they receive in that deal. The question would be whether a 1st round pick was worth $3.5M of wasted cap space.

I have a feeling that we will grow to like Versteeg next year. Who knows when he got that abdominal tear (they may have said it but I didn’t read it/forgot when). But regardless, that woudl affect his play. Plus adjusting to the system and trying to find his role on the team.

I think a training camp and having more time to learn and work on Lavi’s system, plus some time to gel with some linemates (whoever it may be, I do want to see him with Richie, I think they can play well together given time), I think he’ll be a good piece in this lineup.

Also, I’m fine with not knowing in season injuries as long as we know them by the end. I don’t want another team knowing Richie has a hurt wrist or Prongs has a hurt back. You saw Brad Marchand poking at Carters injured knee… the same woudl happen to everyone who’s injured if we told them.

by OrangeNblacK on May 11, 2011 11:55 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed, although it really affects public perception of players. We see guys play less effectively, haven’t heard anything about them being hurt, and form lasting — and often unfair — impressions of them.

by Eric T. on May 11, 2011 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

As long as we find out now, all can be forgiven. A sports hernia is a big deal—-playing through that must have been painful and probably had a lot to do with his lack of physicality.

by OrangeNblacK on May 11, 2011 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it can and should be forgiven now. But it won’t be, in most cases; the public has already formed their impressions in most cases.

by Eric T. on May 11, 2011 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

The Flyers don’t care what the public things. When he scores, they will cheer. As far as this community—-I think a strong preseason and a strong start will do for him what Scotty Hartnell’s playoffs did for Harts…

And all the runs people took at Richards during the playoffs.

Are you saying they did or would have taken runs?

by OrangeNblacK on May 11, 2011 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

They did take runs at him. From Kaleta to Mcquaid and on. I was so impressed with his vision for ducking the majority of them.

Kaleta takes runs at everyone and Mcquaid laid the wood the whole series. That Coby hit was horrible. Richie plays way too physical not to be taken runs at. The runs could/would have been different if it was known he had wrist issues. They could have targeted that wrist.

by OrangeNblacK on May 11, 2011 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s my point. He would have taken hits targeting his injury if it was known.

An when I said they took runs, I mean tried some dirty hits. McQuaid would not have been hurt if he wasn’t head hunting.

I have to say that I liked Seravelli’s article on the Flyers woes. He’s basically willing to question everything in order to find where things broke down, whether it’s the coaching or the leadership. But he’s doing it in a way that’s not a personal attack on anyone.
And he makes some very valid points

Same. I heard him on NHL pregame yesterday and threw up a little in my mouth. He gave backhanded compliments to Richards and flat out lied when asked if it was something personal. Questioning his play and ability is one thing, but to make personal attacks on a guy under guise of journalism…

Really? Carchidi took the “emotionally detached” line from Panaccio and threw it in his story for no reason.

Also, Carchidi is the one who titled a story “Captain Whine” last year, ripping Richards in the same way Panaccio is doing now.

I stopped reading him because he was so bad. Maybe he hasn’t been terrible recently, but right when I praise him (yesterday) for not writing shit, he goes and steals the ‘emotionally detached’ line from Panaccio and just drops it in a story.

So he’s back on my shit list.

Yeah, after that story last year I started to refer to him as “Sam Crotchety”.
The phrase ‘familiarity breeds contempt’ comes to mind. Sometimes I think guys like Panaccio and Carchidi themselves lack the requisite objectivity to perform their jobs well. Maybe they believe that because they have covered the Flyers for so long they should be accorded some reverence from the players, especially younger, yet-to-be-established players. It’s why giving Travis a terse response then walking away is forgiveable (by Travis) and at the same time, if he’d done that w/ Panotch or Crotchety, it would have spiralled into something much bigger.

Adding the minor league baseball park to the referendum will absolutely hurt the vote. There is no need for a minor league park 15 minutes from the AAAA NY Mets and not far from the LI Ducks park. On top of that you have the Brooklyn Cyclones within a short drive as well.

Having the vote in Aug will ensure low voter turnout. Which I’m not sure will help or hurt their cause.

I found Ryan Bright’s article (the first PSD link in today’s list) to be very useful. He makes the case that Pronger and Richards, as opposites in temperament, complement each other, as opposed to Pronger’s strong personality undermining Richards. I’ve tended to believe that there was some kind of power struggle or tension but am less inclined to this view after reading the article.

by flyersfaninchicago on May 11, 2011 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

It’s been a growing theme for awhile. Well, at least for people who believe what the players tell you.

Last year, Richards and Pronger spoke about how the Olympics helped them and how they were working as a team. In fact, last summer I wrote about it.

just by listening to them in interviews it always seemed like a dr. jeckyl mr. hyde relationship. I’ll be a dick and you be a sarcastic dick with the 2 polar opposites you end up right in the middle.

I still hate that people care about how an athlete is with the media. Athletes haven’t spoken their minds since the 70-80’s. Once the league grew, it became marketable. And you don’t want non-college degree earning players speaking their minds.
It’s really sad actually. I understand it from both sides, he represents the team so he can’t say the wrong things yadda yadda yadda, but maybe if he was allowed to he’d open up a bit.
Who knows though.

This is why Sean Avery’s commercial is awesome. He’s actually saying something. Like it or not, that’s sweet in this day and age of every single person repeating the same lame talking points.
Still hate him as a player and hate the rangers but that’s another story

I can imagine the two of them getting along smashingly, actually. And for all of Pronger’s forwardness, I believe he’s certainly savvy enough to know how to be the right kind of locker room presence.

So:

Richards & Meszaros – wrist
Kimmo – hip & back
Syvret – eye
Hartnell – hip
Carter – knee & hip
Betts – finger
Versteeg – abdominal

Out ;
Pronger – back & hand
Leighton – hip

Did I miss anyone? So almost half of our starters (and a couple back-ups) were playing impaired. That seems like a lot, even for the Flyers.
