I'm Not Okay (I Promise)

The Philadelphia Flyers were one win away from the Stanley Cup Finals. One win away from the Calgary Flames. One win away from the Stanley Cup itself.
As a sports fan, there are certain inevitable truths that however unfounded they may be, I hold near and dear to my heart. One of them is the Flyers would not lose that series against Calgary. There was just no way. That was the year. That was the team. I know it. I'll always know it. Even if I never got a chance to see it.
We all know what happened that day. There is no need to run through the events. The overly drawn out narrative of Dave Andreychuk. The cruel torturous hope provided by Kim Johnsson. We all know how it ended. And it's too depressing to think about.
Yet I can't help but dwell on it. So what if the Phillies, who I love just as much as the Flyers, won a World Series since then. So what if after the direct kick to the junk the Panthers gave the Eagles in January 2004, they would finally make the Super Bowl one year later? So what if the Flyers have gotten over the Eastern Conference Finals hurdle?
That feeling of lost opportunity from 2004. Primeau. Gagne. Roenick. Kapanen. LeClair. Recchi. Markov. Johnsson. Radivojevic.
I could go on. Those were the guys. That was the team. The over-achievements of the 2010 team, as fun as they were to watch and celebrate in, do not and cannot replace the emptiness of 2004. They can't take back the tears I cried. They can't replace the nights I spent thinking "what if.....what if......."

It's been seven years since the Tampa Bay Lightning won that Stanley Cup. It's been 2561 days since that infamous Game 7. I've grown from adolescent to adult in that time. I was just finishing middle school then. I am a year away from finishing college now. I am a different person now then I was then. But that hole in my heart created by that game is still there.
Despite winning the Stanley Cup in 2004, this is the first year since then the Lightning have won a playoff series since then. Their only two playoff appearances since Andreychuk lifted the Cup were both as bottom seeds. The Lightning bowed out in the first round both times while barely making any noise both times. Now, after 6 years of having never tasted a playoff victory, this year, the Lightning find themselves in the very place they were 2561 days ago. Game seven. Eastern Conference Finals.
The opponent may not be the Flyers. In fact, it is the team that eliminated the Flyers from this year's playoffs. But that means very little for me. If I can't have that feeling of victory, then the next best thing is to put the hole in my heart into the heart of the Lightning fans. The same fanbase that bombarded a team's PR agency with death threats over a poster. The same fanbase that has allowed their arena to feel like Prudential Center during playoff games with the amount of Bruin fans there. The same fanbase that threw projectiles onto the ice after a win that only forced a road Game 7. If there is anyone that deserves to feel what I am feeling, it is them. For what their team did to me seven years ago. For the way they have conducted themselves this series.
Some Flyers fans want the Lightning to win a Stanley Cup for Simon Gagne. Me, I do not want Gagne anywhere near that Cup. For all the fear of the moronic collective's reaction to two superstar goalies in the Stanley Cup, imagine the reaction to Gagne in the Stanley Cup. Idiotic hindsight will want Homer's neck on a guillotine. It is nothing personal against Gagne, but him winning the Stanley Cup this year with Tampa will be the biggest slap in the face to the Flyers. Fuck Simon Gagne. Fuck the Lightning. Fuck Lightning fans.
I've been waiting for this moment for seven years now. Only half of the equation may be there now, but I can still hope for the result I wanted then. I'll never get 2004 back, but Tampa can feel the pain of losing to a largely unlikeable team in Game Seven of the Eastern Conference Finals. The pain of being one game short of the Stanley Cup Finals. The pain of knowing their team with a ton of Heart that never gave up was one game short of a sweet victory and a chance at a Stanley Cup.
The thought may never cross his mind, but for one night, in this Flyers fan's mind, Dennis Seidenberg stands alone as a man amongst men in Boston. His objective tonight: To carry the torch for the 2003-2004 Flyers. To help his team eliminate the Lightning. For Seidenberg, it's a rare second chance. For the Boston Bruins as a whole, it is a chance to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1990.
The Flyers organization may not have a shot at victory in this year's playoffs, but living vicariously through the Boston Bruins, I have a chance to feel something almost as fulfilling: Revenge. Sweet revenge.

I am pretty sure she already alluded to it on Twitter earlier. Whatever. None of this has anything to do with her, nor is any of it directed to her. She can feel how she feels. I’m going to feel how I feel. Nobody is going to change anything here.
Writing is how I deal with feelings. My lone wish is that I discovered this earlier in my life. If people do not like what I say, they have the option of not clicking my links/fanposts.

Honestly though, the winner of this series has earned nothing more than the right to lose to Vancouver.
Both Tampa and Boston will have played two seven-game series, separated by sweeps. In Tampa’s case, they had to rally from a 3-1 deficit against Pittsburgh before they (pun intended) caught lightning in a bottle and won 8 straight games. Since then, they’ve gone 2-3. Even if they win tonight, their playoff run will look like this:
Games 1-4: 1-3
Games 5-12: 8-0
Games 13-18: 3-3
They’ve clearly had their best run of the playoffs already, and as the competition has gotten stiffer, they’ve gotten worse. They went from having a losing record to being red-hot to being mediocre. And then they’re going to go up against a team who can skate as well as they can and can match them in the end-to-end game… but that team has a deeper defense and better goaltending. Vancouver in 5.
As for Boston, they had a tough seven-game series against Montreal, then swept the Flyers before getting into another tough series against Tampa. Their record, should they win tonight:
Games 1-6: 3-3
Games 7-11: 5-0
- Games 12-18:* 4-3
At no point has Boston had a losing record, or gotten as hot as Tampa did. They had a nice winning streak and probably have some more left in the tank. As they are a better team than Tampa, they will probably be a bit tougher for the Canucks to beat. Still… Vancouver in 6.
Here’s what Vancouver has done:
Games 1-6: 3-3
Games 7-12: 4-2
Games 13-18: 5-1
As the competition has gotten tougher, they’ve gotten better. They’re rolling into peak form as they hit the Finals, and they’ll be rested.
So either Seidenberg or Gagne will “carry the torch” for the 2004 Flyers, but Vancouver will blow it out.

I agree with this. I know it’s the playoffs and anything can happen in small sample sizes, but I have a hard time envisioning any of these teams beating Vancouver. But like I said, anything can happen.

Had to give you more recs. This is exactly how I feel. The only way I could possibly route for Tampa was if they were playing Crysby and the Pens and they are not.

I’ll be honest, I was a 14 year old, just a week from graduating from 8th grade and going into high-school, and I cried like a freaking baby after that game 7. I’ve also come to the conclusion that, no mater what, that I just can’t love THIS team like I could that team. Between 02-04 was the best years of hockey for me. The 90’s were great too(and even then I may like the 90’s teams better then the one the past 2 years). I don’t know what it is with this Flyers team. I just cant love the players like I did before. I stand up for Richards and Carter, but both players piss me off a lot. The core of the team just seems “off” compared to the old teams. We don’t have that really good fighter who could also score like Brash or Richerdson (Carcillo is more of a pest, not a heavyweight, and Shelley sucks at fighting and scoring), We rarely hit anymore, we play WAY TOO FANCY, And the attitude of the team is just a million times different. I remember getting Tony Amonte at the deadline in 03(i think 03), and it was one of the best nights of my life, knowing full well he was just a shade of his former self. When we got Versteeg this year, I had more of a “thats cool” feeling. It wasn’t exciting to me. I know its a different age, and there are far less star players like there used to be., and I know that we’ll never have a full team like 04 again because of the cap. But If you were to tell me the Flyers could win next season, or go back to 04 and win the cup that year, I would take 04 in a heartbeat. I know I rambled on about something clearly off topic, but to answer you post, I will root for Tampa tonight, even though I hate that team almost as much as I do the Devils or Penguins, because I would rather see Vancouver win it all, and Tampa is the better mach-up. That, and I don’t like to see O-6 teams win either.
Samesis
Well that was me last year. Cried myself to sleep after game 6 (I never cry) and still greatly resent the Hawks. Still haven’t seen the goal since then. Im lucky enough to be a younger fan and not to have to deal with as many losses as most of you.
I somewhat agree with your “off” sentiment. They lost part of themselves toward the end of the year. Passion drive grit whatever you call it

You know, 2000 bothered me every bit as much as 2004, if not a little more. We would have blown out the Stars in the SCF if we had just taken care of business after game 4 of the ECF.
Grrrr…

I was at Game 7 in 2000, so I know what you are talking about. But at the same time, since that time, the Devils have had two playoff series against the Flyers. In those two series, the Devils have won a combined two games in addition to breaking them last year.
I’ve come to peace with that one.

I agree
2000 was the most devastating of all the many Flyers playoff losses I have witnessed. I also agree with Justin that the hurt has been lain to rest.
Actually...
Game 7 against the Devils remains the most devastated I’ve ever been by anything.

How can you say “Fuck Simon Gagne”. It comes off as ungrateful, Gagne did a lot for the flyers, even more in last years playoffs. Its not like he demanded to be traded during the offseason, he was loyal to the flyers organization and they dumped him off in Tampa. Now that he has a chance of achieving and deserving a cup in his long career you wana shit all over it. The dude is a clutch player and it’d be lame to forget all he’s done for your organization.
fuck boston.
