Dump that atrocious Hartnell robbery contract and sign him up. Give him a a bump to 3 million a year and its worth it.
Also I have mentioned this in the past, and was slammed, but wouldn’t Nabokov be the better cheaper option. I say this because looking at the Schneider/Luongo situation, and if Bobrovsky is the future, he may definitely get packaged out to make room for Bryzgalov. Like everyone I’m excited at the prospects of a big time goalie, but I am also leery. Those high priced/long term deals especially for goalies are a scary thing ask Vancouver. I am sure as much as they love being in the finals they are also cringing about Luongo. They are also probably also cringing that his back up is a star in the making and has no place on the roster.

Nabokov might be cheaper, but you’d still have to trade to get him. NYI have his rights. And because it’s clear he will not willingly play for the Isles Homer would be in a position of strength.

Montador

Steve Montador signed a 4 yr, $4 million extension with the Buffalo Sabres, I believe. So either Buff grossly overpaid or you grossly underestimated his value. I’d re-sign O’Donnell to a 1 yr, $800K contract if I could

SCF = Outstanding Hockey / Rant on the Rome-Horton check

I’ve watched every single game, and this series has been, in my opinion, the best and most entertaining ice hockey I’ve seen since the Olympics last year.

This series has been outstanding in every way. Bad blood, hard (HARD!) hitting, tremendous goaltending, and all of the desperation/ sacrifice/ “heart” that makes the Stanley Cup Playoffs the greatest tournament in sports.

I’m with Don on perceived bias in the coverage favoring the Bruins. Maybe it’s the American presentation, and the Canadian broadcasts are slanting it the other way? All I know is that I find the Bruins generally unlikable, and it has nothing to do with them dispatching my Flyers. Tim Thomas is the fucking man and he alone keeps me from totally hating the B’s, although I’m pulling for Vancouver. Even Recchi, one of my favorites, is annoying me.

I find Boston sports fans in general rather annoying… I know this is a generalization and a bit out of line, but I’ll stoop a bit as we Philly fans are constantly painted with the broad brush of negative stereotypes (the phrase “Red Sawwxx Nation” makes me feel punchy). The crying — Christ, the crying! — about that Game 1 bite from Burrows is unbearable. Not just from the fans, but from the Bruins players themselves. It was corny and sickening to see Bruins (Recchi included) shoving their fingers at the mouths of Canucks in post-whistle scrums during Game 3.

I was also really annoyed at the NHL disciplinary response to that slightly late hit by Aaron Rome on Horton. I’m sorry that Horton got Lindros’d on that play and is hurt, but that’s what happens when you watch your pass skating full-speed at the other team’s blue line. Rome didn’t target his head, he didn’t come at a beeline from a blind position, he was in front of Horton and stepped up at the blue line. Perhaps a fraction of a second late, but it’s a fast game and it’s all the line at this time of year. The call on the ice was appropriate in my opinion, and I wouldn’t complain with a one-game/two-game MAX suspension, although I don’t think it merits any suspension. To take him out of the series is a poor response prompted by Horton’s injury, and more inconsistency from NHL.

The league should dole out really long suspensions for CLEARLY DIRTY, malicious, intent-to-injure plays — AKA Matt Cooke plays. They should make examples of those plays and suspend those players for major chunks of the season. On this Rome/Horton hit, I saw a clean, hard hit that was so slightly late as to be a well-intentioned decision in a fast important game. Rome wanted to stand up at the line and eliminate Horton from the play, and did NOT intend to injure him. It’s an honest play, and, if Nathan Horton had kept his head up ice instead of on his pass, he would have braced himself and still be playing in these Finals.

OK, I’m done with that now, sorry for the looooonnnggg rant. In summary, this is an excellent, entertaining series, and I’m sorry that it is going to end one way or another tomorrow. Much respect to American hero Tim Thomas, but Go Canucks. And, please, NHL, define what’s dirty and enforce it accordingly. Make examples of the truly dirty, disrespectful players, and don’t punish honest players for playing the game hard and physical like it always has been played and always should be. Hockey is a dangerous, physical sport. Players should respect the game and eachother, and that includes being accountable for your own safety on the ice.

by jMm8_ on Jun 14, 2011 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I watched that hit and thought the opposite. It was an illegal hit (I would not call it dirty). He blindsided Horton, who did not have the puck and was behind the play. According to the rules laid down last year, it was a penalty and review.

I do agree it was a pretty heavy suspension after some of the other stuff we’ve seen.

"All we want is to be treated like human beings, not to be experimented on like guinea pigs or patronized like bunny rabbits. "

by Mike B on D on Jun 14, 2011 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

He wasn’t behind the play, but I’d say its blindside. Horton still should have known Rome was over there, but he never looked anywhere but to Lucic when he got the puck. Rome was doing his job and went for the hit. It wasn’t dirty, but it was a little late and a bit of a blindside.

What can't Giroux do?

by tmurder on Jun 14, 2011 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Blind Side...

I suppose you could look it as a “blindside” hit, but I’d consider that a result of Horton watching his pass instead of having his head up and vision up ice. When you have your head down (or watching a pass), most checks could be called blindside, but I see what you’re saying as Rome stepped up at the angle opposite of the direction Horton was facing.

I guess at the end of the day, we all agree the sentence was too harsh, and inconsistent against previous incidents and suspensions. Of course, everyone knows that the NHL Disciplinary Board has a tough job. I just fear that the current climate of the league and the handful of disrespectful, dirty players in the league don’t combine to take the physicality out of the game.

Players are as responsible to protect themselves as they are responsible to respect eachother and the game. It’s hard to play the game at a professional level amidst monsters with 6’+/230 lb+ frames trying separate you from the puck, and the physical aspect of the game is why the offensive studs don’t net 5 or 6 goals a game — they have to make their plays around the legal checking of other talented, honest players.

Most hockey fans relish the hard checking physical side of ice hockey — especially guys like me that relied on that part of the game to make and play an important role on a team. I’d even go so far as to say the physical aspect and checking makes the offensive fireworks and highlight goals/plays that much more rare and that much more special…

by jMm8_ on Jun 14, 2011 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve watched every game. I came in hating neither team, but between the announcers and the media seemingly playing favorites…I’ve begun to hate Boston.
I actually screamed at my TV last night after the BS call on Edler after the Boychuk/Raymond which the announcers justified by Boychuk having no choice on the play (seriously?!?)…but Edler wasn’t even trying to play the puck (no shit, he played the man who had just beat him to the puck).
Oh and Doc talking about the Bruins always taking the high road as the teams took the ice, really? I don’t think I would have had any animosity towards either team if the coverage wasn’t so (seemingly) bias in this series.

In all honesty, Tim Thomas is the only Bruin who I do not hate right now. The way that Ryan Miller acted like a whiney little girl the whole time really bothered me during the Buffalo series and it was refreshing to get our asses kicked by a goalie who was dominant that didn’t have to whine to the media like he was in midget hockey. Luongo has disapointed me thus far—-but I’m still rooting for him.

I didn’t like the whole Pancioretty thing (really didn’t like it…I’m surprised he let Horton come to TD Garden with all the flashing lights and movement just a week after suffering a severe concussion), and why he got caught up in the whole finger nonsense, sigh. I just thought Recchi was always above that stuff, that he was more “old school”. I always appreciated him based on some personal experiences with him, and thought a lot of him as a person…but what he’s done publicly this year, it doesn’t seem like the same Mark. So for who he has been in the hockey world, that Recchi, I’ve lost respect.

Honest question, how was that a boarding call? Because Peverly played at the puck by bending over and Edler finished his hit? Then Peverly played it up and laid on the ice after the hit until a call was made…but yeah Canucks dive. Peverly lowered his body intentionally there and put himself in that position, excellent hit, but then a penalty called and Eddie O goes on about how the puck wasn’t there (but fails to mention how Peverly is just getting to the puck before Edler separates him from it). I lost my shit then.

And anyone know what the Bruins fans were yelling while Raymond laid on the ice actually injured?

Same here. People are constantly talking about Vancouver being dirty and diving, but look at everything Boston has done. And yeah, Vancouver does dive a lot, but Bergeron (of all people) elbowed someone in the head last night. Brad Marchand, with his glove on, delivered a round of punches to Daniel Sedin’s face last night. Boychuk’s hit on Raymond that should have been a penalty. NBC’s coverage of this series.

I came into this series 100% neutral and wanting to stay that way. I just wanted to enjoy the Stanley Cup Finals without any rooting interest. Now, I have found myself 100% in Vancouver’s corner. The downside of this is I supported the Flyers this year. Then the Predators. Then the Sharks. So, uh, if Boston wins the Stanley Cup…….

Would be great if he did, but I don’t know if he would be as successful at that, or even continuing to own a successful NBA team once the NBA institutes a hard cap.

Has he expressed any interest in owning an NHL team? I know he mulled over an MLB team but after Selig essentially told him to piss off he decided to not pursue any further.

Me too. Ever since college, I’ve referred to Nowitzki as “Log Cabin Dirk” because I had this twisted idea that he, Nash, and Shawn Bradley all lived in a Deliverance-style log cabin somewhere in the woods.

I was a fan of those Dallas teams and I’ve always had a soft spot for Nowitzki. How fitting is it that he – unlike Lebron – stayed with his team the whole time and was finally rewarded for it? He could have bailed when he had the chance, but he stuck with it. He could have thought that 2006 was his last chance with the Mavs, but he didn’t. His loyalty and commitment was rewarded.

Contrast this with Lebron, who promised the world to his hometown Cavs, only to “bring his talents to South Beach” and promise a dynasty down there instead. Someone wrote shortly after “The Decision” that it was really a tacit admission on Lebron’s part that he could not shoulder the load for a team and be “the man” all on his own. He couldn’t in previous years and he still can’t be now. But he can live his lavish lifestyle while the rest of us go about our mundane lives, apparently. Fuck him.

The only member of “The Heatles” I feel remotely bad for is Chris Bosh. I can see why he might want to leave a team like Toronto after not getting any real support there, personnel-wise. If I was him and had the chance to play on a team with another star (Wade) who had won a championship, I might just do it myself.

See, I don’t like or dislike Lebron and I do think his attitude is pretty reprehensible at best, but at the same time, I have issues faulting him for that given his upbringing. By that I mean, he is a guy who at a very young age was told he was the greatest, he was surrounded by people that fed into that. His high school basketball games were on national tv. Lebron turned into the monster that people allowed him to become.

I would love to see an actual write up on that. Because if he did that, then he truly is a douche.

But I don’t know who he plans on recruiting there. The NBA is going to have a hard cap and they won’t be able to afford anyone good to play with them. Not unless they trade away Bosh and get a legit Center.

Why do you hate Bosh more than Lebron and Wade?

by mantis toboggan on Jun 14, 2011 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t say hate. I said dislike. I don’t hate anyone…

But to answer your question, before Bosh came to Miami he was such an incredible whiner who also seemed to get man handled by any other legit bigs. He has the skills to be better than he is.

Now, that said, since coming to Miami, he was probably the least annoying of the Big Three. I never saw Wade whine like he did this year. I honestly think Lebron rubbed off on him so to speak. It was almost like because they were the Big Three, Wade thought he should get all the calls, like Lebron had been doing the last few years. Of the Big Three, Bosh seemed to be the one most willing to just do his job and be quiet. I will say that I appreciate him for that. I don’t Bosh is a bad guy or anything like that.

Stupid Stan Fischler used to go around saying how “bad for the game” Ron Hextall was, despite his talents and innovations.

Even Stan Fischler, the Rangers fan, willingly looked right past Billy Smith and decided that Hextall was worse, somehow. Hextall slashed legs; Smith did two-handed chops to people’s ribs. He sucker-punched and did all manner of stuff to anyone who got near him. Any older hockey fans I’ve talked to have said that Smith was the nastiest goalie they’ve ever seen.

What else is the goalie supposed to hit him with. That is hockey goalies are treated like magical fairies that can’t be touched. In reality they in big tanks with armor and weapons that can this out tons of punishment if push comes to shove. There wouldn’t be a trapazoid if you could just check the goalie like any other defender handling the puck behind the net.

Thomas 5ft 11in 200lbs
Burrows 6ft 1in 188lbs

for comparison Hextall 6ft 3in 205lbs bigger than most of our current forward core

by chrislanci on Jun 14, 2011 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

You either let Seidenberg handle it, push Burrows back in the chest, or drop his gloves if he wants to throw a punch. Or you don’t slash him in the back of his legs to begin with.

NHL Rule 51.3 if you care:

51.3 Match Penalty – If, in the judgment of the Referee, a goalkeeper uses his blocking glove to punch an opponent in the head or face in an attempt to or to deliberately injure an opponent, a match penalty must be assessed.

He was trying to throw punches clearly, I doubt the thought was to intentionally injure Burrows (more so pissed off and emotions run high and you just throw), but the rule is there.

by DLJr on Jun 14, 2011 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

They are definitely penalties for sure but there is nothing wrong with taking penalties or stirring the put. The slash and the punches should penalized. But I have no problem with a goalie doing stuff like that especially since the refs aren’t going to call it. Burrows reaction was also completely overblown. You want to stand there take the punishment and hope you get the PP. Slashes like that are part of the game Thomas didn’t take a full swing to break his ankle or anything.

by chrislanci on Jun 14, 2011 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you missed that it’s a match penalty. Also, I’m not talk about

Also, a blocker is a weapon. As someone who has been part of a big fight in pee wee’s during post game handshakes that started with his teammate getting leveled in the face by the opposing goalie’s blocker, I may carry some personal bias. I have no problem with chippy stuff or “stirring the pot”, but I have a problem with sticks and blockers being used as weapons…and somewhere you missed that point.

Except game 3, and I’ll miss much of tomorrow night’s game 7 (sigh) coz I coach soccer on Wed evenings. IMO it’s been an exciting series. I came in rooting for Vancouver and against Boston. But after watching — and this is hard to say, believe me — the more Boston plays the more they impress me.

It’s like what Flyer hockey should (and used to) be. Supporting each other, being physical, imposing your will on the other team. At least in the Boston home games. but even in Vancouver the games are even. Boston just keeps impressing me so much, I (gulp) begin to root for them.

Shame on me, I guess, but I can’t help it.

I’ve watched most of every game and have concluded that neither team is likable. I’m defaulting to rooting for Vancouver for obvious anti-Boston reasons. Recchi has overstayed his welcome and Seidenberg is too far removed from the Flyers for me to care about him winning anything.

Luongo

So, doesn’t Luongo’s inconsistent play prove (alas, only anecdotally) that a “premier goalie” is not a panacea?

More and more I feel like there’s no scenario where signing Bryz is a good idea.

Pretty much, but you could argue that Thomas is doing the opposite.

The Blue Jackets have long lacked a scoring forward of Carter’s pedigree

Goddammit Panaccio haven’t you heard of Rick Nash..

Maybe it’s the pedigree part?

I agree, the Jackets have had a scoring forward…but maybe there is something Carter does that Nash doesn’t that Columbus wants…like the ability to play center, or play defense.(not the position)

Possibly the play-center part, but for him not to elaborate upon that thought is just poor journalism. And calling Matt Carle a power-play defenseman is a bit of a stretch.

Well at least he isn’t writing about Richie’s captaincy, so I guess it’s a step in the right direction.

There's a new DGB.

How to Present The Stanley Cup

With brilliant bits such as…

OK Gary, once the Cup is out on the ice that’s your cue to make your way over. Let’s walk through it right now. Great, great, you’re here, one hand awkwardly on the Cup, ready to go. Pause for booing. Booing. More booing. Still booing. Hey, have you ever considered letting someone else handle this?
Now Gary, while all this is going on, you’re going to want to be wearing the proper facial expression. I’d recommend a smirky mixture of glib condescension and bemused annoyance.
OK, now the winning team is going to pass the Cup around. There’s an established order here, so let’s make sure they follow it. First, the captain. Second, the captain’s twin brother, if applicable. Next, the sympathetic old guy on the team who’s never won the Cup before.

I'm the Pronger. DUH, WINNING.

Neither of these teams is the Buffalo Sabres, so it’s important to make sure the series is actually over.

Okay I wanted to ask people with more knowledge of hockey than myself what everyone thought of the Boychuk hit that injured Mason Raymond. While watching I immediately thought it was a really bad back/neck problem from the way Raymond went into the boards. I understand that it’s not a penalty but I still don’t like what Boychuk did when he rode him into the boards simply because of the way Raymond’s body was positioned. Boychuk knew Raymond’s back and head were essentially parallel to the ice and he knew he would be compressing his back/neck in a really bad way by pushing him that way, and yet he did it anyway. If he wanted to eliminated him from the play, seeing that Raymond was like that, couldn’t he have just pushed him down to the ice instead? And I don’t feel like it happened in a matter of 0.001 seconds and therefore literally couldn’t have been avoided.

But I can’t tell if my intense dislike for the Bruins is distorting my view of what actually happened. So I’d just like to know what everyone here thinks?

Tough Call

I think it’s tough to consider Boychuk’s play here super-dirty.

I agree that Raymond was in a compromising position, but, if I remember correctly, he didn’t seem in a hurry to scramble back to his skates or to change his body position to protect himself. I also don’t think Boychuk went out of his way to finish him as hard as he could have.

That situation is really tough on Boychuk. He a defender in the defensive zone, Raymond’s on his hands and knees with the puck below him, and he’s in a bad spot. If Boychuk gives him all he’s got, Raymond’s almost definitely injured (he got hurt pretty bad as it was and I don’t think Boychuk gave him everything he could have). Then again, what if Boychuk holds off and Raymond makes a play in the meantime?

If I’m recalling this play correctly, I look back on it as an unfortunate situation and a tough position for Boychuk.

My problem is, people describe the hit on Horton as a hit of a player in a prone/vulnerable position and it resulted in an injury, therefore should be suspended. Raymond was in a vulnerable position and was injured, so if you want consistency, there should be a suspension (though I would never expect it in this case). I know it’s all about head injuries and they won’t compare the two.

As far as the play. The puck is gone, Mason is still trying to regain his balance, and Boychuk unnecessarily finishes him off. Given the position Raymond was in and the distance of the puck, I think I’d call an interference/roughing call there, but if they miss it no big deal. Except, they followed it up with a horrible call on Edler, and that’s when I had a problem with the non call on Boychuk.

was the puck gone? I thought it was under him… I was packing my gear for our game and 1/2 watching the first period last night.

Yeah puck had gone, I believe by 2 seconds.
