I always think it's a sign of victory when they move on to the ad hominem.

Wow if that’s the kind of in-depth analysis FGSB is usually trotting out, 365 days can’t pass fast enough.

Is Bryzgalov good? Certainly. Is he better than Bob? Currently… by a little bit. “Is he worth what the team would have to do to keep him?” is the big question that almost everyone outside of this site fails to consider.

I like Bryzgalov. After the rookie season he just had, I like Bob too. I feel that the only thing that WAS wrong with Bob at the end of the season was that he got tired/burnt out. The only thing I feel Bob DID wrong was he told the coaching staff he was tired/burnt out (through a translator, which could have been a whole ‘nother problem). I’d like to think that the situation would be handled differently this time around, and I hope I get a chance to see it.

You know what…the closer it get’s to B-Day, or the announcement, the more I am coming to grips with it. For one reason, and one reason only…it will remove one huge argument/excuse that is had every year. They Flyers went out and got one of the NHL’s better goalies. I don’t know if I would classify him as elite, not sure the stats back it up, but he is at least, widely considered to be a well above average goalie and so if with this goalie the team doesn’t win the Cup, then maybe having an elite or well above average goalie is not all it’s cracked up to be, or if the team does win the Cup then people will be so happy then we might get a season, or possibly two where people don’t bitch and complain about the goaltending or any other issue and we can just enjoy hockey for a year. One can only hope.

the problem with the characters was that none of them were particularly convincing. Wyle’s character is too young to be your stereotypical history teacher

I actually thought the point was that in an insane world, the truly unhinged can be the best teachers.

Hence Downie survived his period of insanity by having some good tutors (Flyers), and is now a productive member of a violent society (hockey).

And I still think Rinaldo is far more looney than even Colonel Kurtz.

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Jun 21, 2011 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I think you mistook the ‘society’ of Kurtz’ group as indigenous, when I assumed it was of his own creation. Historically, the peoples of Southeast Asia weren’t particularly violent. Their god-worship of Kurtz brought them to that point, and his blend of Confucianism and pure ultra-violence was the society which Captain Willard responded to from his own violent background.

Addressing that point:
To be fair, I stated what I understood from the movie. The movie chronicled a trip into the depths of the enemy, going behind enemy lines, driving each character mad and ultimately killing each member (the chap with the dog loses his own identity)

I addressed the whole of the movie: each character is stripped of their identity when they are implanted behind enemy lines. When they lose who they are, they become a reflection of what is around them

That’s I understand Kurtz to be a reflection of his society he lived in, and not the leader of them

Ahh, my daily dose of Flyer negativity…

Why all the sturm und drang about the cap floor rising? It’s tied to revenue, the point wasn’t parity, the point of the lockout was cost containment. They’ve tied their biggest cost in labor directly to revenue, the problem will be if for some reason revenue takes a nose dive. That’s why there is a floor to force shitball teams like Florida to actually spend.

by scottymac on Jun 21, 2011 8:35 AM EDT reply actions

The floor is above what the cap was a mere 4 years ago. In four years, teams went from “You can’t spend more than this” to “Spend at least that!”

If you’re rebuilding a team – like the Panthers, Oilers, etc. – you are being forced to waste money on players that aren’t going to help you. It’s artificially inflating salaries because those teams shouldn’t be spending that much if they aren’t going to win.

But does it? If the talent is not there they just toss money at whomever is around. It’s forcing them to spend, not build a team. For this to work, there needs to be a cap freeze for a few years to let some of the smaller market teams catch up.

Does anyone follow the “panotch”. If you do that’s cool but i tend to disagree with his approach towards reporting on the flyers. he’s got that agenda. as a reporter you must be impartial to the story but he’s the opposite side of the fanboy reporters for the most part. sometimes being overly objective is good but he goes overboard. on a personal note he’s not a very cordial person. the rest of the media staff at the wells fargo for the most part is.

I was just about to say… I feel that a Western Conference team should play this year since the past few years have been Eastern teams.

It might be a long shot, but I think that the Wild should have a chance since Minnesota is known for their hockey/pond hockey.

Would that matchup attract a lot of viewers? Can they make a good story out of it? That’s all NBC cares about.

by hintzy64 on Jun 21, 2011 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know if this matchup would attract a lot of viewers…. I’m thinking yes because you have the big market team (Philly) and then you have a cold weather team/I feel like everyone plays hockey in Minnesota. NBC might be able to find the story in the pond hockey culture in MN.

The one problem that I do see in this matchup is the fact that Minnesota has missed the playoffs recently (admission: I’ve only followed hockey for a few years, so I might be wrong). This match up could probably go either way for NBC.

My guess would be no, just judging by the matchups that are perennial candidates for “NHL Game of the Week” coverage. NBC has made it abundantly clear season after season who they think the big market, ratings-getters are. I hear you though, I think it would be an interesting matchup because of the pond hockey background, but I doubt that NBC would feel the same way.

OT, from ESPN insider

An offer sheet with an average salary between $6.27 and $7.84 million would net the Lightning two first-round picks, a second and a third-round pick in compensation. But we have to think the Bolts would be willing to match such an offer. However, it gets intriguing if the offer sheet is for an average salary of more than $7.84 million annually. At that point, the compensation is four first-round picks, but we have to think the Lightning would still match the offer. That said, if the average number begins to top $8.5 million, they might start thinking twice about the deal.

I think I’d let him walk for four first round picks.

The way the cap is rising in the past couple of years I wouldn’t let him walk for that. He is a bona fide scorer. 41 and 45 the last 2 yrs, name 1 other player who has that many goals. without doing research I would put money on nobody coming within 15 goals of that. We have a cap hit of $6.3 for Kimmo or look at it this way for Versteeg and Richie( close to same money cap hit wise) for Stamkos. If I’m GM done deal

I don’t think I would he’s so young and so good. Certainly can’t lose the face of your franchise without getting something in immediate return. Plus any team adding him probably wouldn’t be bad for too long, so the later picks might not be top 10 or 15 any more.

How would years figure into RFA offer sheets? If the team he was on offered him one of those shiny front loaded contracts over multiple years at a reduced hit, and another team offered him a huge cap hit for 2-3 years to keep RFA rights when the first expires, how is the “value” determined? (I am not sure if any of that makes sense.)

I suppose teams in non-traditional hockey markets have more of a need to keep their “franchise faces” in order to appease the fans. The other side of that, though, is that those same teams would ideally like to have young, cheap talent coming through in droves. I suppose it depends on what team you’re getting the picks from. If it’s a Burke/Kessel X 2 situation I think I would do it.

Was your point that you have no life, no interest in discussion of reports, and are currently in a crabby mood so you are going to tell of a bunch of people on the internet with a statement that has no factual basis behind it? If so, that point came across quite clear. Job well done.

If what you say is true and the Flyers sign Bryzgalov (or Vokoun, the other “elite” goalie in this year’s FA class) all the while keeping Bobrovsky and Carter, and trading only one of Hartnell, Versteeg, or Carle (and no one else), then you have free reigns to laugh at me for an entire season. But given the Flyers situation right about now, I would say the odds of you being right are about the same as Michael Leighton ever becoming an elite NHL goaltender. Which is to say: none.

OK. Granted I went about it the wrong way...

But the amount of negativity toward the potential signing of an ACTUAL goalie I’ve seen on this site has literally blown me away! When I heard that the Flyers traded for the rights to Bryzgalov I was ecstatic – even after hearing they would have to move some pieces. But when I came on here to gauge the public opinion it was like the sky had fallen. I’ve been a flyers fan my entire life and was 11 when Hextall left. Am I missing something? We should want this!

… And as for the roster contest… yeah. That was dumb.

by Joewade on Jun 21, 2011 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that the opinion has been a little overly negative, but I think the $64 million dollar cap has helped to alleviate some of people’s concerns. I think they can manage by only getting rid of Hartnell and waiving Leighton, but we’ll see what happens. I’ve converted to the “let’s wait and see what actually happens before we panic” side.

by mantis toboggan on Jun 21, 2011 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

No one was, or is, opposed in the abstract to signing any “elite” goaltender, including Breezy.

The “sky is falling” atmosphere is due to the costs – in dollars and to the roster – of this potential signing. If it were ever a matter of waiving Shelley & Leighton and not resigning about 4 RFAs and making one salary dump, say Versteeg — then things would have been a lot more positive.

Taking the other oft-mentioned salary dump candidates (esp. Carle) and factor in the trade-Carter rumors, and you’ve got a lot of skepticism that any improvement due to Breezy will be able to offset the loss in productivity up front and depth everywhere.

It was never just about Breezy, because nothing happens in a vacuum.

Negative reactions to the trade/signing are the result of: a) The length of the deal; b) The cost of the cap hit; and c) The moves that have to be made to fit that in.

Being ecstatic for a good goalie is one thing. Being ecstatic about Jeff Carter being traded in order to afford Bryzgalov is quite another.

If it were 2000, I’d be ecstatic about signing a legit top 10 NHL goalie with numbers comparable to Ilya Bryzgalov. But it’s not. It’s 2011. There is a salary cap now. And in order to afford Bryzgalov, the Flyers, who are tight against the cap as it is, have to trade players in salary dumps in order to get the heavy contract that Bryzgalov is asking for under the cap. So the question becomes, is the team better with average to above average goaltending in Sergei Bobrovsky and a back-up with Carter/Carle/Coburn/Versteeg/Hartnell all on the team, or are they better with Ilya Bryzgalov with Bob as a back-up, but minus some combination of the aforementioned players? The majority of the people on this site believe the former is true.

Granted, the salary cap is going up higher than most people initially believed it would. That is only good news for the Flyers. It is possible they can make this work. They can sign Bryzgalov, and make proper moves without getting any worse as a team. Now whether or not Homer does it, is something that remains to be seen and many people doubt.

When the Flyers announced they have inked a deal with Ilya Bryzgalov, just remember this: With everything comes a price.

Has anyone else had any nagging feeling that maybe they are not high on Bob at all, and they are trying to pull in an “elite” goaltender to try and inflate his trade value? Not saying I have faith that the team is that smart, but if they think he’s reached as well as he’s going to do in the NHL… (Everyone always brings up Boosh/Esche/Nitty) but it would be genius to dump nearly 2mil while picking up a contender Goalie, especailly if you take back some prospects or picks. (Also, we got Bob fluke scouting in Russia, its not like he cost us picks or anything to begin with.)

I definitely get the feeling they’re not that high on Bob, what with a single period where his defense hung him out to dry causing him to not just get pulled but demoted to the pressbox and subsequently replaced in the offseason.

But bringing in an elite goalie doesn’t increase Bob’s trade value; it decreases it. Both because they made it clear to the world that they’re not so sure he’s a true #1 (and they know him better than anyone else) and because it clearly makes him more expendable, so teams don’t feel like they have to offer as much to acquire him.

by Eric T. on Jun 21, 2011 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he meant that Homer’s plethora of compliments towards Bob and claims that they like him and want to keep him were meant to inflate his trade value. But I agree, bringing in an elite goalie to take over in net instead of Bob decreases his value for all the reasons you listed.

I think just about any offer would be a bad one/lowball offer; maybe that’s just me. It would have to be a pretty sweet deal. I don’t trust Homer enough.

What kind of plane is it? Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big ol' Tylenol.

the only way to get the tyler seguins of the world is to trade your mike richards or phil kessels of the world.

That being said, Homer hasn’t given us any reason to trust him

I mean, there was the Forsberg trade, but that was beginner’s luck. LOL.

I don’t know. While almost any trade involving Michael “Goddammit people embrace the name change!” Richards would probably be a bad trade for the Flyers I wouldn’t call him “untouchable”. I don’t think the Flyers have anyone “untouchable.” Then again, i don’t think there are that many untouchable guys to begin with.

Actually, can anyone clue me in on this? I feel like I’ve seen “Michael” around quite a few times, but I have no idea why.

I’m not sure how exactly it was decided, but he is officially referred to as Michael now by the Flyers and NHL.

I’d say Giroux is right now, realistically

I’d say he’s on the cusp of untouchable, but like I said I’m rather reluctant to hand out that distinction. He’s

extremely
valuable at his cap hit to say the least.

Second I would put a contract on Homer.

Third I would pick up Kat from the airport…

Yeah, I’ve been absent all summer, but after reading through today, that will have to change. I forgot how much of an asshole everyone is.

Also, I’m almost positive the guy that shot up that pharmacy in Connecticut is Don. Well, looks just like Don, at least. Anyone else see the photo of that guy?

Okay, maybe not just like you, but I was at a bar when I saw the story, and I immediately thought of you. After watching again just now, my vision may have been a bit blurred before…..But, if it were a Flyers hat he was wearing, I probably would have called the tip-line…..

So he has a crappy beard and a hat and is skinny. Other than that, he’s about 3 to 4 inches too short.

I actually think it looks like my buddy Mike Travs (the goalie int he first open ice, and the guy that came to the bar after the 2nd)…just too short.

Waiting

I have been waiting for news all day, and still nothing! Is this a good sign, a bad sign, or just the norm for the Flyers? I think it is just the norm.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, on his way to Minnesota, spoke to agent Ritch Winter about goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Both sides are inching closer to a contract. Holmgren said the two would talk again this weekend at the NHL draft which is Friday and Saturday in St. Paul.
