2011 NHL Draft, Discussion Thread: Day Two Is Here, Do You Still Care?
Day two of the 2011 NHL Draft is here, and the Philadelphia Flyers are back in the familiar position of trying to find players who they can trade next year in the middle to late rounds. Who knows, maybe somebody will bring in a Tom Sestito. Or maybe somebody will supplant Garrett Klotz as BSH's favorite meme-turned-song.
Follow along on NHL Network if you so please, and discuss all the hapnin's right here.

I’ll be flipping back and forth between this and the Sprout channel. My son likes hockey, but at 2 years old watching the draft is a bit beyond him. And not nearly as entertaining as Thomas the tank engine.

Yeah I do. Xavier Oullett is still out there
Boosh has been doing decent...but I still hate him
I got Versteeg, and you can't have him.
OMB!
I saw him play, and wow…guy’s got it. Comparable to Coburn in the sense of TWD with more of a defensive upside. We’re probably not going to have a chance to take him, but whoever does is gonna have a nice defenseman in this draft

Don’t think the Flyers want to trade Versteeg. We should see a full season of KV, where he’s healthy at least in the beginning. It could only be better.
I think keeping Versteeg would be great. Theguy should be good for 20+ goals when healthy. I actually like him better than Leino-I wouldn’t be disappointed if the Flyers let him walk away. But getting that early pick in the 2nd sure would be nice, too.

I see Couturier thinks he can/wants to make the Flyers out of camp. I agree with people that I’d rather have a UFA guy like Belanger to fill that shutdown role than force Couturier into it so early.
What do people think of making Briere play wing more? I want G at center, but I feel like Briere will be effective at wing while allowing a center to be more responsible defensively than he is.
Eh, I think Briere is at his best at center, never managed to really shine at wing like he has at center.
by Kozlowski22 on Jun 25, 2011 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions
Something like ..
JVR/Giroux/Voracek
Hartnell/Schenn/Briere
Simmonds/Belanger/Versteeg
Shelley/Betts/someone
Flip Giroux/Briere and put Powe and Nodl on the checking line on the wings. That’s how I’d prefer it.
Lifelong Tennessean, Flyers' fan for life
Believe me I don’t want Shelley on the 4th line either but Lavy/the organization seem pretty committed to him.
So you’d rather G playing wing than briere? I guess we just have to see how it shakes out in camp, I could see both Schenn and Couturier making the team, or neither, though I highly doubt Schenn will start in the AHL.
Why not just let Briere and Giroux both play center, and not sign a UFA center? Wouldn’t it make more sense to let your players stay at their natural position & fill the hole at wing via UFA?
Brayden Schenn is actually the one who is the issue. There is no doubt that Briere and Giroux are your top two centers. However, if Briere is the first line center and Giroux is the second line center that leaves you with Schenn as your third line center. With the loss of Carter and Richards, the Flyers’ forwards are now extremely weak defensively. Someone has to step in and center that third line and it be a shut down line that can adequately nullify the other team’s top line (a role that Richards played beautifully). Giroux is capable of doing that but that takes away his offensive minutes and is a poor use of his abilities (which some people said about Richards playing the third line center role). Schenn is 20 with 9 games of NHL experience. Not really the player that you want to be relying on to shut down Crosby and Ovechkin. In time, he may be able to do that, but not yet. That is not a fair to expect of him.
So the Flyers have a few options to ponder:
1. Try to make Briere or Giroux or Schenn play wing and, like Derek said, sign a third line, shut down center (which is what we have been talking about in another thread). They had this problem last year having 5 centers on the team and trying to make them play on the wing. Maybe it could work better now, who knows?
2. Give Schenn a shot at centering that third line and see how he does. Maybe he settles in and it works. But, if he fails, the Flyers have a big problem and wouldn’t have the necessary player to step in and fill the role.
3. Give Schenn more time to develop in the AHL. This opens up and added $3 mil. approx. in cap space which would give the Flyers the opportunity to pick up a third line checking/faceoff specialist and a winger.

Also, re: our draft picks. We have Columbus third, two fourths, a sixth, and two sevenths?
That third we traded to Phoenix for Bryz, that must’ve been 2012?
NHL.com only lists us having one 7th, but I see two on the BSH pick tracker. Was the future considerations for Bryz a 7th rounder if we signed him, perhaps?
Is there like an easier to use list at NHL.com rather than clicking through the ticker at the top? I feel blind, but I can’t find one

Okay, what I think happened is that on the BSH draft pick tracker, we never gave our 2011 third rounder to Anaheim for Pronger because I see elsewhere that that was the pick that conditional upon us winning the cup in 2010. So we actually gave our 2011 3rd rounder to Toronto for Versteeg according to NHL.com. So at that point we still had Pittsburgh’s third rounder that we got for Hamhuis.
Then it appears that in the initial Bryzgalov trade, we gave them our 2012 third rounder. The conditional pick that we just gave them because we signed Bryz was this year’s third rounder that we had gotten from Pit.
The only 3rd rounder we have this year according to NHL.com is at #68, meaning it’s the one we got from Columbus.
Oy, figuring that out made my head hurt.

Right, I was pretty sure we only had the pick we got from Columbus in the third round. I’m still wondering about that 7th. And that means next year we’ve got 1, 2 (LA), 4, 5, 6, 7
That one was supposed to be from Nashville over Parent, and according to NHL.com Nashville still has their own #21 pick in that round. So I’m guessing we didn’t actually get that conditional pick somehow

I think the Devils and Kovalchuk should now sue the NHL for age discrimination. They’re essentially saying he CAN’T play until he’s 44.

by FrankG929 on Aug 9, 2010 5:15 PM PDT
Ah, yes. The wording was that Hamhuis had to reach free agency while his rights were held by the Flyers. When we flipped him to Pittsburgh, we no longer held his rights, so we didn’t get the pick, according to The Tennessean.
Bob.
I was just looking at our schedule for next year kinda surprised that we don’t play the Pens til December. I would of thought they would of had us played them sooner then that. Richie & Carts comeback to Philly before we play them
Heard a new rumor
In the new CBA they’re talking about not letting teams pick in the top ten more than two years in a row, or in the top 5 two years in a row…I like the idea, doubt it ever happens, but some owners are upset because in the cap era it’s such a ridiculous advantage to be awful and get those picks a few years in a row.

That would definitely be an unsubstantiated rumor… Last I checked that hadn’t started CBA negotiations yet. When Don Fehr was appointed he originally said he wasn’t going to start negotiations until the spring of 2012. Even if he’s moved up from that, I don’t think any real talks have started yet.

It seems like we’ve got some solid prospects in the AHL that should be ready by now to make the NHL jump, but they’re probably no better than 3rd pair guys. I would’ve liked a D with this pick, but they must see something they like in Cousins.
As far as that first pick, Im pretty damn happy with Couturier. He could end up being the best player from this class. Not saying he will, but he was ranked 1st before this season started, and I know this has been discussed in other threads but the reasons he dropped aren’t because of a diminishing skill level at all. RNH just went on a tear.
If you’re going to focus on needs, then they needed to draft defensemen in the first round two or three years ago. It’s too late to draft for the need now — they’re going to need replacements for Timonen and Pronger long before these kids will be ready for that.
If all things were equal, I’d have gone defense. But Couturier was much more highly regarded than Hamilton, and when neither player really fills a need, you go with the much more highly regarded player.
Agreed. I feel this way about all drafts. You draft the best player available and don’t draft for need unless they are one in the same.
What kind of plane is it? Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big ol' Tylenol.
It depends on the draft. NFL and NBA I think you draft more for need, but in the NHL and MLB, I think you are better off just going with the best available.

Or in the case of the Sixers, you do try to draft for need, but end up choosing poorly…?
The Eagles typically draft BPA and don’t always draft for need.
What kind of plane is it? Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big ol' Tylenol.
If you draft for need, it has to be future need. People get NFL mocks wrong all the time because they ask “what does the team need today” instead of “what will the team need when the player is ready”.
My thinking in saying that though is often times in the NFL, you draft for what the team needs that day (or the start of the upcoming season) because frequently, you draft guys and they see playing time right away. You see that a lot in the NBA as well. But in the NHL and especially MLB, it can take some prospects a few years to develop and be ready to play in the big leagues, which lends itself more for drafting for best available instead of team need.

A report on him:
Cousins was the 21st pick in the 2009 OHL Draft and the diminutive center is an integral part of the Greyhounds’ core moving forward. There is no doubting that Cousins has the offensive ability to be a gamebreaker at the OHL level. He’s got deceptive moves in traffic and very good vision on the ice. He’s also got a bit of grit to his game and isn’t afraid to shy away from the difficult areas on the ice despite being undersized. As an NHL prospect, however, I’m not sure he’s going to amount to much. His skating is improving but it’s still only slightly above average. His defensive game also isn’t anything to write home about and detracts from his value as an NHL prospect. If he can put up 60-70 points this season an NHL team might snap him up with a late round pick, because he does have good skill and has some of those pesty qualities that can get under another team’s skin, but I don’t expect him to go in the Top 5 rounds and wouldn’t be shocked if he winds up going undrafted either.
I guess one of the Flyer scouts strongly disagreed with this account.

here’s a more updated review from that same site (thescoutingeport.org)
Cousins is a bit of an enigma who we have trouble determining a role at the next level for. He’s a scrappy little player who does a bit of everything on the ice and isn’t afraid to mix things up, trying especially hard to get under opponents’ skin. He’s got a bit of an awkward stride, but his combination of skill and offensive awareness is enough for him to make things happen out there. Our issue is seeing how much of his game translates to an offensive role at the next level and trying to figure out whether or not some of his character issues will hinder his efforts to make that jump.

But given everything that just happened, I am very curious to see how he can get this team, with it’s new culture to buy into him and his system. I’m fine with giving him this season to see how things play out.

From the preseason write-up from The Scouting Report:
With a trio of highly touted forwards in Lucas Lessio, Boone Jenner and Nicklas Jensen up front, Suellentrop could be a promising defender on the backend for the rebuilding Generals. While last season was a struggle at times, Suellentrop did have stretches of strong play and handled a lot of minutes for a bad hockey team. He played for the United States at the Ivan Hlinka tournament, and with a year under his belt, the Generals will hope that Suellentrop can take a big leap forward in his game this year. He has good size and puck instincts, but he’ll need to be better positionally and display more polish in his transitional game this year.

from hockeyspy.blogspot.com:
Like Colin Jacobs, Petr Placek was expected to place very highly on the draft board at the first of the season, an outside chance of even the first round. However, like Colin Jacobs, it wasn’t to be. Petr was injured and was limited to just eight games for a lousy team. And to make matters worse, when he did play, he played a way too perimeterish for a huge guy, more like some of the dipperettes that he was playing against from the other high schools.
So as a scout, do you say, forget him, he just wasn’t any good. Or do you say, wait a minute, he hardly played so he could still have lingering effects from his injury, maybe I should just forget this year and evaluate him on his potential. The answer probably lies somewhere in between but it is hard to believe that teams will take too many pawns when there still is a "Czech Mate" possible on the board. A 6’4 210 lb, winger with a huge wingspan and an excellent work ethic and alluring offensive qualities (vision, shot, strength, calmness) is likely to be gone no later than the end of the third round.
“Czech Mate” – really?
Sounds good though. Low risk high potential reward.

I thought of a Coutier question from last night. If he makes the big team out of camp and struggles do we get to send him to ADK, or does he fall all the way back down to Major Juniors? I know if he doesn’t make it out of camp you said theres rules to keep him below the AHL level.

I should let DG answer but I’m pretty sure you need to be 20 to play in the AHL, might be an exception for the end of the season/playoffs if the junior season is over.
The rules are all different depending on where a guy is drafted from (Juniors, Europe, etc etc); the major juniors transfer agreement is what covers Couturier.

It’s going to be young, but very good, so you can set yourself up for a lot of years if you draft good.”

The “enforcer” role is quickly becoming irrelevant. I don’t want to save $500k on a guy like Shelley, I don’t want to pay that guy at all.
To compete, the Flyers can’t afford to have these guys as dead weight pulling down other players. Shelley does it to Betts and Powe. Carcillo did it to Richards.
It is a useless pick because this kid will probably never get to the NHL and even if he did, he shouldn’t be there unless he can kill penalties or cycle the puck – legitimate contributions. By picking a goon it means they lessen their chances in finding that late round gem like Pavel Datsyuk.

I think if we get a “hidden gem” in later rounds it is much more likely to be Noebels or Placek. But I see a lot of upside taking this kid 7th round. You could land a lucky dart with a high school kid (I’m keeping my fingers crossed that when Luuko comes up here to UVM he continues to improve) or you can take a guy with some heart and some work ethic and hope he brings his game up.
From the little I read on Mathers, other than fighting he switched from D to W just to make the squad. Sure sounds grim, but the dudes trying to live the dream any way he can. I believe he was. He asked earlier in the week if I’d be around to write something up if the Flyers signed Bryzgalov while he was away.
I joked that he should put stories in the can for each possibility — write up a “Hartnell shipped out” article, a “Carle shipped out” article, a “Versteeg shipped out” article, a “Bryzgalov signs for too much” article, etc. Carter for Voracek + #8 was on the list. Richards was not, unsurprisingly.

So thank you. You make it hard to take the summer off.

Isn't it interesting?
As the Flyers’s season ended, the talk on here was how the team had to stop giving away draft picks, had to get younger, had too much money tied up in contracts. How it was headed to a huge, long decline.
And then, two surprising moves later, we go from a Flyers Autumn to a Flyers spring. Richards and Carter had last season and this season to win the cup it seems. I can only think that this move was the right move – if only so that it gives hope for the future, instead of only memories to look back on.
It's in his wheelhouse!!
