Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

Thank you, Richie and Carts!

I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that two of our best players won't be here next year. Despite anyone's individual gripes against either, IMHO, it is undeniable how significant these two players were for our team post-lockout.

What I'm hoping is that people will post their favorite moments of either/both players. I'd love to see lots of awesome pictures and gif's of #17 & #18.

Thank you, Mike and Jeff. We're very grateful for your contributions in Philly, and you will always be a important part of Flyers lore.

Pretty sure this is everyone’s favorite Richards moment. Mine, for sure. Next one is 2nd.

While I’m still sad I did not see that goal in real-time; I will never forget hearing the roar from outside the Wach. I was at Citizen’s Bank Park for the Phillies Carnival, waiting in line to get Moyer’s autograph I think, and everybody went “OMG what just happened?” when we heard the Center erupt. When everyone started frantically following the Flyers game on their phones and stuff, the Phillies took the hint and turned the Flyers game on to all the TVs in the ballpark.

Having seen it in real time at the Wach, it was incredible. The whole place was up and yelling. It was amazing.

An empty net goal is one of the best moments in Flyers history?

I mean, I get that it was a good effort play… but I think you’ve oversold it there.

Point of trivia – I was at the Calder Cup-clinching game – that was a lot of fun! There was a nice celebration after the game that mildly reminded me of the celebrations from 20 years before (but, of course, it wasn’t anywhere near as big, loud, etc. as winning the Cup). Still, nice memories…

by Orange and Black Forever on Jun 25, 2011 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

this I think is my main problem with it. Yet again the Flyers give up on 2 star players. Sure it was I guess a legit reason, bad prep, horrible work ethic, party over work yadda yadda yadda but couldn’t you just leak that they were on the block and give them another year to figure it out?

Or do both of their NTC kick in this season? If so that makes more sense as to why that didn’t happen like I suggested it should have. I dunno if I’ll be alive to read both biographies to find out the truth though.

But yeah they really felt like ours. I don’t mind trading people you didn’t draft no matter how good they are, you didn’t do the leg work to get them until they were established.

sad face. But they did get at least 2 solid prospects in the draft and a ton of talent came back. Still though, we didn’t draft that talent, but we could develop Schenn and the picks.

http://restorations.bandcamp.com/

by Val_d'Or on Jun 25, 2011 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I know we didn’t draft Schenn and that he played a few games for another team before coming to us but really I’m ready to take him on as a Flyer-from-infancy while I guess we can’t say he was born a Flyer.

Simmonds and Voracek won’t be ours unless they play for a very long time in Philly.

Couturier’s ours.

Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 25, 2011 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

So was Forsberg not really an Avalanche? Its early enough for Schenn to be nothing but a Flyer as well IMO.

by blackandorange on Jun 26, 2011 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Well Foppa never played for the Flyers before he was traded, Schenn’s already debuted for the Kings.

Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 26, 2011 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

What hurts me the most is that they thought of themselves as our guys too. They wanted to be in the orange for the whole of their lives, win the cup as a Flyer, retire a Flyer, potentially have their number in the rafters… Looking at some of the pictures of them with fans and kids makes me sad because really they were the stars for a whole young generation of hockey players in Philly.

I agree. :(

#1 Flyers fan in England (originally from Southeastern PA)

by Orange and Black Forever on Jun 26, 2011 7:08 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah major co-sign.

I really believe with Richie, Carts and the rest of the core we had in place, we were going to win the cup in the next 3 or so years. The team was right there on the brink with the experience of 2010 and the way they burst out of the gate in 2011. It was a championship team without a shadow of a doubt. I am disappointed they wouldn’t just let it play out.

Now I won’t say I don’t think they’re close to a cup after the trades but it’s all very unknown. We haven’t even seen this group of guys play together yet and there will be a lot of team dynamics that we can’t predict. The thing that really stands out from the trades is Brayden Schenn. I am very excited about Schenn. He will make the team out of camp and I can only hope it will be like watchin’ Rich and Cart grow and develop into a fantastic player. Who knows, he might be one of those freakish players who is just outstanding from Day 1… Everything points to him being a very, very special player.

Say hi to the bad guy.

But we didn’t have the RBK Edge jerseys in the ‘06 playoffs, we had the old blacks. The jersey is how I figured out it was ’08, because in ’9 we debuted the new oranges. But I’m realizing that in ‘08 we didn’t change the shirts as often as we do now, so that may not have helped me whittle it down to a specific game, anyway

SB Nation Philly Editor’s Pick

Now, that was a nice unexpected surprise. :) I’m assuming one of the masthead was responsible for that – was it Travis, Ben, Geoff, or Eric? (Or, Todd, Kreider, or Teemu, if it was one of them.)

Anyway, it’s a very good additional tribute for our…I still can’t believe it’s true… former Flyers.

P.S. I don’t mean to make yet another another suggestion about the thread, but, people, some more of these photos/gif’s really should be green already.

Just saying… ;-)

A humble (re-)request…

Honorable fellow blogmembers,

Some of the photos above represent the best moments of Richie’s and Carter’s tenure in Philadelphia, and some are true significant moments in the Flyers career as an organization – let’s turn these gif’s and photos GREEN! Rec away!

Thank you. :)

And you’re using ‘honorable’ loosely …

Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.

i honestly think I will miss Mike Richards forever, Favorite Flyer of all time, mind you I’m 21 so I havent seen a whole lot, god its so heartbreaking, but i believe that its for the good of the team. “For the crest on the Front, not the name on the back”

That’s the right perspective. I’ve been a fan for 38 years, and I’ve seen these kind of trades before – they always test your fandom of the team to a degree. If you can get by one (or more) of your favorite players leaving the team, and you’re still a fan of the team, you’re probably a fan for life.

However, I’ve never seen two players of this caliber be traded at the same time before. I can understand why some had their faith tested with all this. Really, this kind of scenario is only likely with a salary cap; without one, I am positive we would still have both players.

Ultimately, winning cures everything. If this all works out (sooner or later, hopefully sooner), it will have been worth it.

Thank you, everyone! The top gif finally turned green, as it should. A defining moment in recent Flyers history. :)

I hope people will post (and rec) more here. I know that we have to move on with the team that we have now, but these two will always be a special part of the team’s history.

Thanks again, and thank you, Mike and Jeff!

Tempted to flag as inappropriate

Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

If Gags stays healthy, those two will contribute a lot for you.

BUT, this is a nostalgia thread, so disapproving face for you… :-P

Yes, the nostalgia bit.

It’s a thread remembering, which is why the Richie/Kings pic was a bit of a jerk-ish move even if it wasn’t intended.

My bad

didnt mean to cause too much animosity. If it makes you feel any better I think Meat Train will bring you some glorious production and you will end up seeing why Kings fans love him. Also, I end up always rooting for the Flyers anyway after ahem the Kings early exit out of the playoffs :(
