On a completely unrelated note

I saw this on twitter and it worried me:

I think its pronounced COAT-EE-AY. Haha how do we come up with a nickname that’s not “Coatsy”? Coats? #Flyers #cantspeakfrench

Let’s not call Couturier Coatsey…please?

Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

Hate to harp on about this again but...
Arguing that the Flyers, once again, don’t make any sense:
Arguing that that Flyers “threw away a working model”

It’s naive to assume that, for some reason, the Flyers did not believe they had a working model. It’s also naive to assume that the Flyers do not know that their chances of winning the 2012 Stanley Cup were greater last week than they are this week. The Flyers had other things in mind. Let’s trust the FO a little bit here people, this does happen to be the same FO that has created one of the most successful NHL franchises since 1967 (in winning %, cup finals appearances, playoff appearances, division wins, everything apart from cup wins really…and cup wins rely on a lot of luck as we know)

by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 27, 2011 6:38 AM EDT reply actions

Regardless of what they thought, they had a working model. That’s independent of the return on the trade, whether they are still competitive, etc.

- Apparently when Richards was called and told about the Carter news he went fucking ballistic. He must have had hardly any emotion left for himself 30 minutes later.

From the FGSB article you linked above. I think the situation may well have been that if Carter was ever traded Richards would likely have to be moved too. I think they were that tight. It’s interesting because I always wondered why Carter didn’t have a chip on his shoulders from losing the ‘most exciting Flyers prospect’ tag to Richards somewhere over the course of their NHL careers. But anyway maybe he’s just not ultra-competitive like that. All I know is that back before they both emerged I was thinking Carter would be the amazing 1C goal scoring machine while Richards would be a gritty leadership-material solid two-way player without becoming the top line center that Carter could be.

That’s kinda what they ended up being, except Carter can also play wing and defense.

I was saying to my dad this weekend that I remember when they both drafted in ‘03, all of the buzz around these two young centers, and thinking at the time that someday we’d keep one but never both and wondering which one it would be. Crazy to think that they both stayed around so long, and then both left practically simultaneously.

Nice article, Geoff. I can’t, nor would I, find the link, but yesterday’s Inquirer had a lovely article written by Carchidi that takes some more jabs at Richards and, to a lesser extent, Carter and your article, while not covering anything I didn’t already believe, was a nice counterpoint.

Re: Hockey Prospectus on Simmonds

The article on Simmonds that HP piece references was a kind of a sloppy take on him, IMO. For one, he cites Corsi Rel QoC, yet puts up the wrong stat. In reality, Simmonds’ Corsi Rel QoC was highest of all forwards who played more than 20 games for the Kings last season.

He also doesn’t consider quality of teammates as a factor—there was a definite bump up in ‘09-’10 and a decline in ‘10-11. Our top 6 was healthier and he had fewer opportunities to jump up there, and not much to work with in Handzus, Poni having a 15 (yes, 15) point year, and Clifford (a 19 year old rookie who’s still pretty raw). There were times when it seemed he lost his characteristic hustle, but he still did OK given the circumstances. When he got to play with Lewis or Richardson, who are speedier centers, he looked a lot better.

Basically, I’d put his down season in a broader context. His goal totals were about the same, and he had to do it in a challenging spot at even strength.

I was in the middle of writing a short post on the whole thing when the big trade day happened. I could try to finish it up when my brain recovers, and I can once again form coherent thoughts. But that’s the gist of it.

This is probably Gabe’s fault — if you download the spreadsheet instead of pulling it dynamically off the web, the columns are mislabeled. I’ve brought it to his attention and he didn’t seem to care much.

However, I agree with you that the article is a bit sloppy. For example, using three-year GVT averages to assess the players is going to make the 21-year olds look a lot worse than the 25-year-olds — he says he doesn’t expect much improvement from Simmonds next year, but by using the three-year average, he’s throwing out much of the improvement Simmonds has already made.

by Eric T. on Jun 27, 2011 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

He doesn’t care? Sheesh. My opinion of him has lowered even further.

Simmonds made the team at 19/20, a lot of guys still haven’t broken in, and the Kings have never sheltered him or done him any favors. You would think he would consider all the advanced stats he has available as well as the broader context. It’s frustrating.

realignment

Only one team: Detroit, Columbus or Nashville could possibly realign in the east. the numbers don’t work out. nashville is south so makes sense to develop rivalries there…

by mantis toboggan on Jun 27, 2011 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

They should go back to the old system in the 70s, top 16 teams are in with the 4 division winners at the top… it makes for exciting hockey and possible flyers/pens finals

by fitzy first on Jun 27, 2011 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Is that your proposed realignment or for somewhere because that sucks? Breaking up MTL Toronto and BOS is not good. I think New Jersey or the Islanders will get moved about from away from the Rangers whom overshadow both those teams. Also Columbus will be in division with Pittsburgh to play on the OHIO St. Pitt Penn State college rivalry.

by chrislanci on Jun 27, 2011 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah – this is all up for debate, post your own divisions you think will work… the south teams screw everything up. but i agree with you, toronto and boston should be together… i tried fitting the original 6 in one division… but it doesnt work. for columbus and pitt to play in the same D, nashville will have to move central… it’s all speculation.

by fitzy first on Jun 27, 2011 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Honestly don’t think anything can make sense unless they expand to 32 teams. But with a proposed Balanced schedule Divisions don’t have to be regional since travel is not an issue. You more want the divisional playoff round and division race to be highly rivalry driven.

I think Nodl returning means there’s a pretty good chance the Flyers are going to have Schenn centering the third line, which scares the hell out of me.

The only other probability I can see is that Nodl will be the 13th forward.

Last year there were a good number of games where Nodl was scratched and Powe was on the 4th line. And Powe is cheaper. So I’d be surprised if they’d resign Nodl for that.

I wouldn’t be that surprised. We know Lavy doesn’t mind using him on top 3 lines, so he can play the PK and 4th line until someone inevitably gets injured/gets in Lavy’s doghouse. Could see him as the 10th forward.

Im fine with Schenn centering the 3rd line wit Simmonds and (insert other defensive forward here) for a year, out D and our goalie are still really good. I just don’t want Schenn used like Richards, where his offensive production suffered because of his crappy linemates and role.

Which is why we all hope we get a Belanger type to do it. I’d much rather force Schenn to play a little wing for a couple seasons. Though worst case, if we do have Schenn in that third line energy/defensive role, I’m sure G’s line will take some of the defensive burden off.. which is probably a negative for their offensive game, but if we’re just throwing energy lines at people hopefully it’ll work out.

Schenn’s not skinny, but he should be given some slack. He could be Mike Richards down the road, but he’s not Richards yet. Heck, Richards himself took some time.

Why would he be given tougher assignments than Briere and Giroux? It seems like they should lean on more experienced centers.

Well, none of us here want Briere to be given defensive assignments. We want him sheltered. Just look at how the Krejci line abused the Briere line in the playoffs. We don’t want Briere forced into defensive accountability.

That makes sense, but I don’t know why Giroux should continue to be sheltered as well. LA would not have matched Schenn up against Crosby or something. To me it doesn’t really seem fair.

Giroux hasn’t been very sheltered as far as I know. He’s a very capable defensive center, and great on the PK. We just don’t want him to be used as the shutdown center, we want him to have as much offensive freedom as possible.

by Derek F on Jun 27, 2011 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Basically I think what most of us want to see is something like:

JVR/Giroux/Schenn
Hartnell/Briere/Voracek
Simmonds/UFA/Versteeg
Shelley/Betts/Nodl

or something along those lines, making sure that our third line gets to be a shutdown/annoying line to play against while not forcing one of our top offensive players into those duties.

by Derek F on Jun 27, 2011 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Cant Schenn and G do what Carter and G did last year nd switch off at center? The only bad thing about Schenn being used as a full time wing is that in a few years when we need him to be a center agaig, he’ll be rusty.

Samesis

by JpH89 on Jun 27, 2011 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I would switch Schenn and Versteeg, personally — not that I know anything about Schenn directly, but what I read suggests he’s much more of a two-way player than you’re implying, and while I don’t want him centering a shutdown line yet, I want him on that line.

Yeah, Couturier might displace him from that role in five years. But let’s have Schenn learn the skills just in case this is the rare occasion of a player not developing exactly the way you hoped he would.

Either way, I’m surprised Nodl got resigned. I wonder if Powe is gone now.

Yeah, there’s always some variance — is Richards 5’11" or 6 foot? But they are listed as similar in height and weight.

Schenn is also working out with Gary Roberts this summer, so he’ll have a lot of lean muscle. But as a shutdown center — this young — well, I would not do that. His defensive game at the NHL level is still a work in progress. Of course, like I said above, I think he can get there in time.

Briere is terrible defensively and shouldn’t be given tough assignments. There’s an argument for not wanting to limit Giroux’s offensive ability but I don’t see how that wouldn’t apply to Schenn at this point as well. I’d like to see the Flyers sign a third center, personally.

I don’t want “shutdown” line I want two way lines that can still generate scoring chances against tough opposition, the best defense is offensive puck possession. Then late in games you through out some D specialists like closer to finish out the last minute of the game. The term shutdown implies stoping the opposition for scoring was priority 1 over generating scoring chances and offense yourself.

I agree that having puck possession in the offensive zone is the best way to prevent the opponents from scoring.

But sometimes you have to take defensive faceoffs, and sometimes the opponent puts out their top line for that faceoff, and sometimes they win that faceoff.

The line that you want on the ice in that situation, that’s the line that I’m calling the shutdown line. Whether they happen to have offensive prowess or not, they’re the ones being asked to shut down the top players on the other team in the toughest situations.

Do you want Schenn centering that line next year?

by Eric T. on Jun 27, 2011 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I want a 4th line Center who I put on to take those draws I would use Betts like that or upgrade Betts to someone more capable.

Nope but is asking for Malhotra numbers out of him so bad. Malhotra only played 11 per game. And it wouldn’t be every 3rd line Dzone draw it all depends who we are playing and who the opposition sends out to take said draw etc..

That 9 ES minutes doesn’t equate to Mr. Shutdown Malhotra being used to every shift against the number 1s Crosby types who play 16 ES minutes per game.

Malhotra played 18:01 per game in ‘08-09, 15:37 per game in ’09-10, and 16:10 per game in ’10-11. And he’s a much better defensive forward than Betts, IMO.

Maybe you meant just even strength minutes? Malhotra averaged over 12:30 ES minutes per game over that stretch, including over 12:30 this year. That’s way closer to Richards (13:15) than to Betts (6:30).

No, I don’t want Betts getting the kind of minutes Richards used to get.

I looked at his playoff numbers stupid default settings. To compare things defensively Schenn > Sedin Twins for sure right. I don’t like it. G and Voracek are both predominantly ‘set-up’ guys, so unless you’re projecting 40+ goals for JVR, you’re wasting that talent set.
Nodl was a center in Europe, wasn’t he? But I still think he would benefit from a stronger center on a line with him – he doesn’t have the good breakout pass that you want your shutdown center to have mastered. I think Voracek fills Leino’s role on Briere’s line, Steeg is a decent two-way scoring threat with G, Schenn is in the AHL, and a FA center fits the third line. Conversely, if you can’t land that FA center, I’d rather see Betts promoted to the third and Powe centering the fourth.

Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.

Disagree. Rinaldo seemed to only fight when he would lay a big hit on someone and got jumped. He is not an enforcer, he’s a high energy checker, and pretty damn good at that. He is crazy, but if you can tone him done he plays a different role, and he plays it well.

The NHL cant overturn a trade that 2 teams agree to. Maybe if it was like if Pittsburgh traded Crosby to the whoevers for a 3rd rounder they could say there was some collusion or something, but as far as I know—-this trade is done. Either way, Carter wouldn’t want to play here without Richards and vice virsa.

What time is that press conference? I cant wait to hear from these guys. Especially the Kings guys.

Interesting observation: if the Blue Jackets now trade Carter to the Flyers for Couturier and Voracek and a third rounder, the Flyers are back where they started…except Carter doesn’t have the security of the no-trade clause in his contract, since it disappeared when he got traded.

There’s seems to be a bit of a debate on whether or not there’s even room on the roster available for him and his salary. This way he’s here and getting work and able to work himself up the lineup, but not put in the “shutdown” role yet.

Well, just a thought.

by A Flyers Phamily on Jun 27, 2011 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Powe is still an RFA. Well, so are Voracek and Simmonds but it seems likely we’ll get both of those guys in, and less likely on Powe now.

by Derek F on Jun 27, 2011 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

There is room for him on the roster depending on if they resign Leino, and maybe even if they do.The issue is that if they put him in the AHL he pretty much has to stay there unless they start the season with 3 mil in cap space, which we know they won’t and or are incapable of doing.

"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Jean-Luc Picard

by EREX21 on Jun 27, 2011 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve been pushing this line of thinking, so I guess I should be clear that it’s not quite that dire.

They don’t have to start the season with 3M in cap space, because when they call Schenn up, they presumably send someone to the AHL and clear a little room there. Plus they will have banked some room by being under the cap in the earlier part of the season. If they enter the season with ~1M in cap space despite Lappy being on regular IR instead of LTIR, it’s probably fine.

But like you say, I doubt that will happen. Most of the people who say Schenn will be in the AHL are saying it because they want to spend his money on FAs, which means there’s no space for him later unless they send those FAs to the AHL.

by Eric T. on Jun 27, 2011 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus, if a portion of his bonuses are based on games played it could lighten the hit when he’s called up. I’m not sure exactly how that works though.

by mantis toboggan on Jun 27, 2011 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Are the available FA 3rd line centers really that much an improvement over what we have in house? I feel like Betts and Powe are pretty strong on defense, and hopefully Betts will be a bit better on the faceoffs next season.

by A Flyers Phamily on Jun 27, 2011 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I think most people perceive them as being good 4th liners but subpar 3rd liners. The kind of guys you want on the ice for seven minutes of defensive draws against the opponent’s 3rd and 4th line, not the kind of guys you want on the ice for fifteen minutes of defensive draws against the opponent’s top line.

by Eric T. on Jun 27, 2011 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Powe could play that role admirably. Maybe it’s just me, but I really like his tenacity. Also, I remember in a scrum with Crosby yelling “What the f—- are you going to do?” He’ll always have a warm place in my heart for that.

And speaking of Crosby, if he’s 100% I have the fear that Pittsburgh is going to steamroll us next season. Malkin doesn’t really worry me as much, as he won’t look like himself until nearly the end of the season, but Crosby? Yikes. We’re going to miss 18 & 17 then.

by A Flyers Phamily on Jun 27, 2011 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, but you see – Powe is expendable now. Petr Placek is playing for Harvard next season, so the team will have their Ivy League person to help Holmgren with understanding the CBA.

by MaximumTalbot on Jun 27, 2011 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m certain if they’d actually asked Powe such questions while he was here, Homer wouldn’t have gotten himself into some of the messes. So I doubt they’ll ask Placek either.

(BTW, I should apologize now for the inevitable day that I mess up his name; despite one ending in ‘c’ and one ending in ‘k’ my brain occasionally wants to short circuit and mix up Petr Placek and Dan Plesac)

Goalie B: 92.1 ESS%, 91.1 total Sv%
Goalie C: 92.2 ESS%, 91.0 total Sv%
Goalie D: 92.3 ESS%, 91.3 total Sv%

All four are still active, one was once a Flyer, one was almost a Flyer, and two were rumored to be Flyers within the last calendar year.

So you have Lappy on LTIR and you’re 1.6M over the LTIR exception and don’t have a 13th forward yet?

Is Leighton going to be the 13th Skater? Because i’m pretty sure he would be a lot better for the flyers in that role instead of anything anywhere near being a goalie.

What can't Giroux do?

by tmurder on Jun 27, 2011 1:11 PM EDT reply actions

ESPN Insider
The Tampa Bay Lightning are not expected to re-sign forward Simon Gagne, according to Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune.

Poised to become an unrestricted free agent on Friday, there will be substantial interest in the 31-year-old winger. The Philadelphia Flyers, for instance, could be interested in bringing Gagne back into their fold.

Paid $5.25 million last season, Gagne is expected to command a $3 million to $3.5 million annual salary, moving forward.

Too much IMO, and we should focus on getting a center first. It really depends on what happens with Leino.

I think the Devils and Kovalchuk should now sue the NHL for age discrimination. They’re essentially saying he CAN’T play until he’s 44.

The 50 contract limit

What I don’t see anyone discussing is the impact of the Carter and Richards trades on the 50 contract limit. The Flyers got way more players out of this deal. And fyi, none of the rosters I see have Read on them, and as I understand it, he’s on a one-way. Would Homer waive someone he just signed? I also think this might mean Couturier goes back to juniors….and is that a good idea?

It’s a one-way contract. But he doesn’t appear on the team roster on capgeek (only as a signee),. I’m not sure how the age/ELC rules apply on this kind of contract.

I feel like people that you sign that haven’t been on the NHL team during the season can be assigned to the AHL, but I don’t know the rules as far as his age and stuff.

It’s more complicated than that. Way more. I’m just not as famiiliar with all of the rules (I tried to be, but that’s a long unpleasant story. :-(( ). FYI, I just double-checked, and Read is NOT on an “EL” contract. That complicates things even more.

I brought it up on BSH radio.

It definitely seems like a problem, but we can’t wrap our heads around it until we see how many UFAs come back. Sestito and Nodl signing makes it seem like it’s getting pretty tight, but maybe it’s easy to dump the 46th contract in a trade for nothing if needed.

by Eric T. on Jun 27, 2011 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I don’t think it will affect how the Flyers go about finalizing their roster. There are definitely expendable contracts in there.

by mantis toboggan on Jun 27, 2011 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

The key question for me is whether a two-way AHL contract can be simply immediately waived. If so, someone goes, too bad for them. If not, it gets complicated.

They’re technically at 40, not including Sestito, Nodl, Voracek, or Simmonds. So that’s 44. Backlund, Read, Walker, and Leighton are all on one-way contracts; by all accounts Shelley and Carcillo are expendable. Even not counting those six, you can fill out the NHL roster without much worry. You only need a couple in your pocket for eventualities, really – assuming you have depth in your AHL team to draw from (as they do now) and cap space to do it in (and Lappy goes to LTIR on day 2, so there’s $1.1m).

Right?

by MaximumTalbot on Jun 27, 2011 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

This is where I need clarification. If you are on a one-way contract, does that mean you are either in the NHL or the AHL but forced to be waived if you go the other way. OR does it mean that it is assumed you are in the NHL and have to be waived to be sent down.

I used to know this, but I forget.

For any of you who are new, last year I downloaded the CBA and I was surprised at how clear the language was. Then, I was put in my place pretty severely when I realized that while the language was clear in any one sentence, sentences and paragraphs could seemingly conflict with no clear resolution. Geoff is demonstrating this. :-((

Eklund just posted this on hockeybuzz
  • The Flyers are in need of a true gritty leader/fourth line center who can kill penalties, win face-offs and help the young centers like Schenn and Couturier start off their NHL careers the right way. Enter John Madden. Two team Cup winner who has already played this role to perfection in Chicago, and was the unsung hero of last season’s Hawks Cup team. Covering the Finals I remember all the talk of Madden mentoring Bolland. I have heard today from two sources Madden is a possibility in Philly.

What’s everyone think about adding John Madden ?

Betts is not Madden even at this age. Madden would be replacing Betts or Powe depending I guess what happens. It wouldn’t be the Flyers if we did start the season with 5 or 6 centers.

Aside from drastically altering the team, I tend to agree with those who think they don’t make too much hockey sense. They aren’t win now moves. Signing an older GT to a long-term deal is a win now move. Why make your team worse to sign a “proven” goaltender?

Trading one of them would have been sufficient. Trading both is too drastic. I just don’t like it, even after having all weekend to process it. Also, I feel for Carter being stuck in freaking Ohio. No beach, no awesome nightlife, no sold out arenas, no best friend. I don’t care how much he gets paid—he was shipped to Ohio for a decade! I’d be depressed, too.

Remember that Ilya is signed for 9 years. And maybe Homer anticipates that Pronger will play 3-4 more competitive years (doubtful, but maybe that’s what he’s thinking).

If he decided that the current group was not going to work in the long term (see my Mike and Bernie fanpost), this is the way to reload without the crash happening later. This is the Flyer management way: always stay competitive. Downside is no Cup. Upside is that 2006-07 never happens again.

It is sad for Kimmo however.

Huh? If Bryz doesn’t play well then you can blame goaltending. People will say the Flyers got the wrong goalie again.

The problem would be if Bryz plays great and the Flyers don’t win, then you can’t blame goaltending.

What can't Giroux do?

by tmurder on Jun 27, 2011 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

No, what I mean is that investing in “proven goaltending” can often have the same results as unproven…that’s what I mean. The Flyers made the move and investment but had the same result.

It isn’t the “wrong” goalie so much as the wrong approach.

I’d contend that they are win now moves. The players you got in return are no slouches. Infact, they have a tremendous amount of upside, and it’s not a large leap either. Jake just needed a change of scenery, and Simmonds is viable for a 15 and 25 season IMO. The Flyers will contend next year and they will make the playoffs.

In fact, I’d bet money that next year’s team wins more playoff games than this year’s team. The goalie upgrade makes perfect sense in that whatever dip you have in scoring will be offset (for the majority) by the increase in net. Plus, the salary you opened up can be spent on a shutdown center in the 2 million range, and perhaps a two way option instead of Leino.

The Flyers will be a better team next year than this past year. And will get better each year. I’m not being too optimistic either. The moves make sense

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Jun 27, 2011 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

CCB, I think you are in the minority with your optimism here. I’d love to believe it, but I don’t see them making the team that much better, especially with the questionable effectiveness of Pronger, Timonen another year older, etc. They could possibly win now, but I don’t see them as being “built to win” at this point and are just remaining perpetually competitive. It seems counterintuitive to everything Snider believes.

I realize in the current capworld you have to keep reloading to stay in the hunt; however, I don’t see how signing the goaltender to a 9-year deal falls in line with that…? Homer’s moves are just confusing to me and apparently to a lot of the hockey world. All my hockey friends, who are fans of other teams, called/emailed me with the same “WTF?!?” last week.

What kind of plane is it? Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big ol' Tylenol.

Of course I’m in the minority here.

Maybe I’m betting on the Tim Thomas river card. How many people are still second guessing that contract? Amazing how one can go from flub to anointed one in only a year.

If Pronger and Timonen are that big of a question mark (which I don’t believe them to be), you don’t double shift them like a jackass. You give Meszaros/Coburn/Carle extra minutes in hopes that they can handle the extra workload.

I was here on the boards during the trades, and there was a lot of what the fuck going on. But then there was also a good amount of “oh that makes sense” from fans of teams not named the Flyers. I think that’s the best objective opinion we can look at. You’re asking Bryzgalov/Bobrovsky to carry your team essentially, which I have no problem with

do you poop on parties professionally, or do you just do it as a hobby?

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Jun 27, 2011 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I still think the contract to TT was too much. Goaltenders are volatile, like pitchers. Overpaying relief pitchers rarely is worthy of the investment (other than Rivera, they are terribly inconsistent). Yeah, it worked out—he got hot at the right time—but the defense played really well, they got some good matchups, healthy dose of luck, yada, yada.

We still have the same coach. Don’t forget that. He needs to make the right decisions with the players and, to use an old Reidism, “Put them in the best position to win”.

Agreed. I just don’t see how this team is better next year. We lost Mike Richards and Jeff Carter and, as of now, are replacing them with Zherdev 2.0 and a third line winger. We upgraded the goalie position, but those losses are monumental. Even if Schenn comes in and plays well, you haven’t covered the loss of Carter and Richards at ES, PK, faceoffs, tough minutes, etc.

One thing that I am seeing consistently is no one expecting Coburn, Carle, or Mezsaros to get better next year/years after. Do I think we will be better next year? No. Do I think we’ll be as exciting? No way in hell. Am I afraid we will turn into this years Buffalo team? Maybe a little. But really since the cup run Coby has been my favorite defender, Carle has had one bad stretch, and Mez… I am not buying into him as much as many but he was very good last year. They all have what? 5-8 years to peak? (If we manage to hold on to them for that amount of time.)

with the money you are saving, you can go out there and get those niche players for 1.5 million that will be the faceoff specialist, or the defensive specialist who goes toe to toe with the leading scorers from the other team. With the money you save, hell you can get a better defenseman than SOD, whom doesnt break down late in the season.

The improvements are subtle, but by freeing up that cash you will have a more complete team, albeit you’ll have players that are specialized

There’s circumstance (usage, teammates) there. I think he’s a perfectly capable player in his role, but I don’t think he’s irreplaceable by any means. Top that with Minnesota giving us a decent return, and I’m pretty tickled by the move.

Yeah, that’ll happen when you start in your own end 62.8% of the time and the goalie behind you only saves 89.9% of the shots at even strength. Oh, and you have to play with cover for Jody Shelley.

by hintzy64 on Jun 27, 2011 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think he’s arguing that Shelley didn’t drag down Powe and Betts. What he’s missing is that the goalies saved 93.1% of the shots when Shelley was on the ice, vs 89.9% when Powe was on the ice.

Either (a) that’s because Shelley was having a heroically unprecedented individual defensive impact on the opponents’ shot quality or (b) it’s because Shelley just got plumb lucky and Powe unlucky and GAA is a terrible measure. I’ll let you decide.

Even if I reduce it to just this:

Jody Shelley GA/60 2.03
Darroll Powe GA/60 2.88

That should be enough to conclude that GA/60 is not a good measure of a forward’s hockey skills. Citing Shelley being third best on the team in the measure does not strengthen the argument that the measure proves that Powe was weak defensively.

Dale Tallon just took on the Brian Campbell salary. I thought, maybe it was front-loaded, but I just checked capgeek and, no, Dale and the Panthers management will be paying Brian Campbelll $7,142,875 each and every year for the next 5 years.

A couple of reasons. He’s on the small side weight wise. Part of that is due to age obviously. He also wasn’t the greatest in his own end the last time I watched him play. That would give the Flyers two small guys up the middle with questionable defensive skills. I also question his compete level. He’s not a 4th line center type guy.

Based on what I’ve seen of him w/Kings, WJC, and a Wheat Kings game I viewed. I should have termed it more consistency than compete level. He struggles with physical play and seems to float at times. Given his age this isn’t a huge shock. I just think he still has a ways to go development wise. Not saying he can’t develop into a very good player, but I think depending on him to play center in the NHL this coming season is mistake. Just my 2 cents.

by hebrew hammer on Jun 27, 2011 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I think this capgeek shows that there is a choice that Homer has here.

(1) Sign a UFA Center for the 3rd line
(2) Keep Schenn in the NHL and not the AHL
(3) Sign Leino or someone like Laich

He can do 2 of those 3. Not all 3.

I’d prefer Lappy to go on IR and not LTIR, so I’d also prefer 1 and 2 and not 3 and bank the space. But then weirdness happens with offense.

I’ve done a bunch of these but have not posted them because nothing makes sense right now. Your capgeek demonstrates this. We’ll see what Homer does.

Right, leading to my confusion: Laich is capable of playing tough minutes at center, but looking for Leino type money. So the options are UFA center, Schenn in the NHL, and a UFA wing? You have 2-3 mil to play around with after Schenn, so you could potentially get a higher quality center with him in the lineup than Leino.

Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.

While not denying the trend, I don’t think Carcillo would have been back in any event.

So where are we right now?

Guessing Voracek + Simmonds make about 4.2M combined, we get this:

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Daniel Briere ($6.500m) / Jakub Voracek ($2.200m)
Brayden Schenn ($3.110m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / James Van Riemsdyk ($1.654m)
Andreas Nodl ($0.845m) / Blair Betts ($0.700m) / Jody Shelley ($1.100m)
Wayne Simmonds ($2.000m) / / Kris Versteeg ($3.083m)
Tom Sestito ($0.600m) / / Ian Laperriere ($1.166m)

DEFENSEMEN
Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m) / Chris Pronger ($4.921m)
Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Matt Carle ($3.437m)
Braydon Coburn ($3.200m) / Oskars Bartulis ($0.600m)
Kevin Marshall ($0.845m)

GOALTENDERS
Ilya Bryzgalov ($5.666m) / Sergei Bobrovsky ($1.750m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $61,663,928; BONUSES: $3,952,500
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $2,636,072

About 2.5-3M to spend on a third-line center if they want to go right up against the cap again. But if that’s more than a one-year deal, I have no idea how they handle it when Coburn, Carle, and JvR all get raises in free agency next year.

by Eric T. on Jun 27, 2011 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

I am with you Eric hoping the Flyers DO NOT resign Leino and go in the UFA market with options Cole, Jussi Jokien, Gagne and Laich as defensibility responsible forwards to bolster 3rd line. Vorachek is the new Leino, hopefully HBV line can dominate easy competition next year.

we trade Giroux and JVR

After we see the emergence of schenn and voracek, why not trade younger?

Holmgren seems to be the anti-Clarke. Instead of trade draft picks and prospects for players past their prime we are now trade players in their prime for picks and prospects.

I think they’d sooner salary-dump a forward than let one of Coburn/Carle/Meszaros leave. With Pronger and Timonen turning 38 that year and no defense prospects who look destined for the top four, they’re going to need to keep those three.

Kind of an odd question, but when I was telling my dad this weekend that the Flyers traded Carter and Richards, he commented that it sucked because the Flyers still had to pay some portion of their salary. I was about to respond no, but I seem to remember this sort of thing happening in the past. Like Jagr, for example. I feel like when he was traded to the Rangers, the Caps fans were complaining because they were still paying his salary. Am I crazy? Is this some old rule that went away with the CBA? How does this work?

Where did he get that from?

There were definitely times in the past that you could pay part of a player’s salary after you trade him. Hey, you can do it in the MLB (hi there Roy Oswalt!). And obviously, it happens in the situation of re-entry waivers.

In the 2005 CBA, however:

11.16 Sale of SPCs. There shall be no cash transactions in connection with the
Assignment of Players. Nor shall any Club be permitted to retain an obligation to pay or
to reimburse another Club for a portion of any Player’s Player Salary or Bonuses in
connection with the Assignment of such Player, other than as set forth in Section
50.8(b)(ii) of this Agreement.
Section 50.8.(b).(ii) seems weird here, because it doesn’t have any exceptions for allowing such behavior. It’s actually a list of prohibited terms and practices, and re-iterates what 11.16 says:
50.8 Prohibited SPC Terms and Practices.
(b) The following practices also shall not be permitted under this Agreement
and may not be included in any SPC, nor otherwise agreed to by any Club, any person or
any entity:
(i) Salary reimbursement;
(ii) Cash transact ions in connection with the Assignment of Player
SPCs;
(iii) Team Bonus Plans;
(iv) SPC re-negotiat ions (either “up” or “down”); and
(v) SPC extensions other than pursuant to Section 50.5(f) above.
I actually the “other than” in Section 11.16 should point to 50.9.(g).(ii), which is Re-Entry Waivers. That’s the one case where we know the team retains an obligation.

I admit that there may be some detail that I’m missing, because the CBA barely even touches the issue of trades. I am under the impression that they removed any allowance for teams to negotiate such things in a trade deal; otherwise the Homers/Lamoriellos/Sathers of the world would be exploiting it to get small teams to take cap contracts with the old team footing some of the bill.

Okay, so it’s something that used to happen (e.g. Jagr, see the last paragraph on his time with the Caps), and the new CBA outlawed it. I was wondering if that was the case because it really hurts lower-income teams, like the Caps. Both he and I could think of examples when this happened in trades long ago, so he assumed it was still common practice. Thanks!

  • Everyone got Richards’ departure wrong.

  • sa cyred, UhOh SpaghettiOs, sjbjay9, PowerOfBauer, Bob’s Crab Emporium, techwiz21, flyersrock08, Philly4Cup, psu1088, and flyerspaul12 got one point for correctly identifying Nodl’s cap hit to within 5% (assuming he is on the roster).

Leino signing and Vorachek cap hit is going to decide this thing?

by chrislanci on Jun 27, 2011 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s lots of room for a comeback — remember, you get three points (plus possibly a cap hit bonus) for identifying a UFA signing. A sixth defenseman here, a Leino replacement there, and anyone could still win this thing. Well, anyone who has some of those bonus points possible, that is.

If we get Stamkos and Brad Richards, I’ll make a huge jump up that list.
