Now most of you will start bashing me for jumping the gun to early with rumors, but just hear me out. I was fooling around on capgeek.com and was taking a look at both the Flyers
and the Columbus Blue Jackets
cap situation. I came up with a deal that I think would benefit the Flyers while clearing some space.
Flyers Aquire: Jakub Voracek
(RFA rights), Fedor Tyutin
, Matt Calvert
, 1st round draft pick (8th overall) and another pick (3rd or 4th round)
Blue Jackets Aquire: Jeff Carter
, Braydon Coburn
and Kris Versteeg
Now obviousley the Jackets would be getting the better of the deal. An elite goal scorer, up-and-coming winger and young top-four defenseman. But this is a deal that can help the Flyers while freeing up cap-space. The Flyers would get two young forwards who have a ton of hype with small contracts.
Voracek is a RFA to be, so he will probably see if salary rise about three million dollars. I that is the case, Voracek would be making around 2.2 million. Calvert has a cap friendly contract of of just under 900 thousand per season. He put up 11 goals and 20 points in 40 games this season, which was his rookie season. Tyutin would bring a big body to the blue-line and could pair with Kimmo Timonen. He is shut-down defenseman who makes less than Coburn. The Flyers would gladly take the 8th overall pick along with another one in the later rounds
Why I Think This Deal is Possible?
The Jackets are in dier need of a top-line centre to play with Rick Nash
, so they would pretty much give up anything to get their hands on him. Versteeg would bring a depth winger to Columbus who can be used on both a shut-down line and a scoring line. Coburn is also a hot commodity as he is still relatively young and could easily be the top defenseman on Columbus.
On the Flyers side, they would primarily be gaining a ton of cap-space while aquiring some key pieces. The Fyers would love to add young forwards like Voracek and Calvert. They bring in a shut-down defenseman who is capable of logging 20 plus minutes per game. He is only 27 (one year older than Coburn) and would take pressure of Timonen and Chris Pronger. The high draft pick (which the Flyers desperately need) would help a lot by drafting a young gun for our future, along with another late-round pick.
What do you guys think?
