Assessing the state of the New Look Flyers
Over the past month, the Flyers have been possibly the most active team in the league, trading Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, and Darroll Powe, while letting go of Dan Carcillo, Sean O'Donnell, and Ville Leino. In turn, we brought in Ilya Bryzgalov, Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds, Max Talbot, Brayden Schenn, Andreas Lilja, and the most controversial, signing Jaromir Jagr. Here's a projected lineup for the new Philadelphia Flyers via capgeek.com

(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $61,555,595; BONUSES: $3,815,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $2,744,405
This is assuming that for the 2nd straight year Ian Laperriere will miss the season once again instead of retiring, which will likely be the case yet again. The goaltending situation is greatly improved with the addition of Ilya Bryzgalov, and if we do not trade Bob It will be an incredible tandem, where we could do a Luongo-Schneider type split with Bryz playing possibly 55-60 games and Bob playing 22-27 games, a kind of split that worked very well for the two Stanley Cup finals teams, shouldn't be any fear about the goaltending.
As far as the defense goes, I am fairly nervous about this core, Chris Pronger, our new captain (probably) is officially starting to break down, the wrist injury at his age could hinder his point production, along with his knees breaking down, his physical play over a long career is starting to come back to him, I'd be happy to see him in about 50 games but healthy for the playoffs. Kimmo Timonen is starting to get hurt more, not injured but hurt, he's slower and cant really be a PP quarterback anymore, which we basically the closest Power Play Quarterback we have now is Meszaros, I would've liked to see Carle have gone and we go for someone like Brent Burns, I disagree with the Lilja signing because it really isn't an improvement over Sean O'Donnell and I would've liked to see someone like Kevin Marshall or Erik Gustafsson get a shot at a roster spot, but we'll see how the defense does, but they should look better with a strong goaltender behind them.
The forwards are gonna be the most interesting aspect of this new Flyers team, young forwards like Simmonds, Voracek, and Schenn should make an impact on the team, but the veteran scoring load is going to be placed on Danny Briere and Jaromir Jagr, my fear with Briere is an impending injury that hes susceptible to, hopefully he can play the whole season and plot another 30-40 goals, the key is going to be how well Jaromir Jagr plays, he's coming off a few good seasons in the KHL, but he hasn't played in the NHL for 3 seasons, is older, slower, and is a long time enemy of the Flyers way of hockey, if he gets 60 points I'll be happy, but I'm not holding my breath.
The team is really hard to judge right now, the offense is one giant question mark, the defense is almost exactly the same which scares the crap out of me, because last season we had the most expensive okay defense in NHL, I'm happy to see a strong number 1 goaltender on the team but some patience would've paid off instead of jumping for a goaltender and paying him what he wanted, and instead letting Vokoun and Brygalov fight for a roster spot, it's going to be an interesting season for the Orange and Black, buckle up.

Yeah I agree, this is a Frankenstein’s monster of a team. Sure I’d love it to gel, but then this is a Peter Laviolette team, where he has a particular system he favors which requires constant pressure and young legs. We have a younger (to the point of ridiculousness) team offensively, which is why Jagr doesn’t make much sense to me, even though I’ll concede he’s a freak of nature, and one of the most robust humans to ever lace up skates, but like a lot of the moves made this off-season, it just seems as if the Flyers pointed there car with no brakes down a steep hill, with no particular plan on what route they would take once they began to gain momentum.
If I had to guess, most likely because he decided he could use an extra $1.2 million or so rather than retire and leave it on the table.
Couple that with the fact that his cap hit isn’t going anywhere even if he does retire (cause of his 35+ contract) and that he apparently still loves working with the Flyers, and he’s not going anywhere this year. Odds of him lacing up the skates are infinitesimally higher than zero, but he’s still of use to this team, and since they’re paying him no matter what he’ll still hang around.

He makes the $$$ no matter what, contracts are guaranteed in hockey. If he retires then the Flyers are stuck with his 1.167 mil cap hit, if he goes on LTIR then it basically doesn’t count against the cap (our cap actually goes up by Lappy’s amount…)

I ran out of breath trying to read that post!
Actually, I agree with much of that. The defense scares me more than the O; Pronger’s back likely won’t permit him back in the lineup regularly until, oh I’ll say December. Timonen is a warrior but the wear is beginning to show. I hope they use Gus along with Lilja, and play Mez with Timonen, or just rest Timonen for a good 10 or 15 games during the season. We really need him to be at his best in the playoffs.
If Pronger can come back in December, he should really be in game/playoff shape by March, without having worn out, barring any other injuries or re-injuries.
I think JvR, Giroux, Jagr, Briere and Voracek will be relied upon for most of the scoring; Simmonds amd Hartnell to be the corner and setup men for their mates; and Talbot to anchor 3rd and 4th lines by turns, and kill penalties.
We’re gonna miss Richie big time on the PK, but there’s still Roo, Talbot, Betts — and maybe Simmonds learns to PK, or Schenn, a little at a time. Nodl can PK, too, so it’s not like we have no one left. It’s just how big Richie’s PK shoes are to fill.
I think we noticed Kimmo being hurt even more than usual this year because he really wasn’t allowed to heal. It seemed like every time Kimmo got noticeably hurt this year, at least with his leg on the west coast swing and his lower back (I think) in late March; Pronger was already out with a more serious injury. To me, I think Kimmo never got to take any time off to heal because we couldn’t be without both of them for too long. In the playoffs it was piling up, because besides the fact he never got to deal with the prior injuries, he was our best Dman on the ice at the time and they were taking runs at him.

Jagr and Voracek
do you think that they will pair up at some point in the season? I know they were on the Czech team together (not sure if they played same line) how dynamic do you think it could be? Maybe Jagr rubbing off on Voracek? …. nm that one, sounds dirty. ha.
Philadelphia Flyers/Columbus Blue Jackets...don't ask me how.

RE: Jagr and Voracek
I think there’s a possibility they team up, not sure how dynamic they’d be since Jagr is in his twilight and Voracek has yet to break out, if Jagr does teach Voracek, I only hope he helps him skillwise and he’s a more mature person than he was when he left the NHL, as far as Jagr goes I was livid when we first signed him, now I’m at the hopeful point.
Jagr, Voracek, and Simmonds are all Right Wings. Briere, Giroux, and Schenn are all natural centers; while JVR and Hartnell are natural Left Wingers. Talbot is a bit of a swing player and can play either wing or center, so he’ll fit in the top-9 as a LW/C and rotate with Schenn. I don’t see us throwing off our balance by putting a natural RW (Jagr/Voracek) in the LW spot, but if we did here’s how we would have to compensate it.
Jagr-Briere/Giroux-Voracek
JVR-Briere/Giroux-Hartnell/Simmonds
Hartnell/Talbot/Schenn-Talbot/Schenn-Simmonds/Hartnell/Talbot
In the above Scenerio (Assume the third line is Talbot-Schenn-Simmonds) we’d have Jagr/Voracek (whichever one is on the left) playing out of place and Scott Hartnell playing out of place. We could go to it, but I doubt it.

When you put it this way..
It doesn’t look so bad on paper…still tough to tell how things will go this season though…
I think the worst part of the New Look Flyers is the absence of Darroll Powe. Granted, he was a role player, but he filled that role well. Let’s hope one of these new guys steps up to the PK…
