Definitely a great look at ELC burning at LIH. One thing I’d add is that the sooner you get a kid to the NHL the sooner you can start breaking them of bad habits. Obviously you don’t do that if the guy isn’t ready but if you don’t think they have much left to learn in Juniors then it makes sense to start acclimating him to the pro life, even if it means you are “giving away” ELC bonus production. I’d really be interested to see a closer look at those second contracts of guys that come up early versus those that stay in Juniors another year. I’m sure there are a lot of confounding issues (earlier risers are likely better, so there could be selection bias), but if you can save on the second contract I think that really does challenge some of the wisdom about waiting to burn ELC years.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

Yeah, I’d love to see a look at that.

The sad part is, as a Flyers fan thats delved this deep into the sport in the last few years, this is the first offseason Ive even THOUGHT about the impact of things like ELCs in the big leagues “before they are fully ready”

Awesome Lindros Videos

Thanks for that link, Geoff. I was actually thinking about Eric Lindros the other week and I youtubed him and watched a bunch of his highlights, but most of these ones weren’t in there. Like the writer of that article, I too was young for Lindros’ dominant years, so it’s great to look back at old videos to see how dominant he was. Plus I probably missed some of those games cuz my dad was too cheap to get PRISM at our house haha.

I’ll never forget the way my cousin described Eric Lindros’ game to me when I was a kid. One day we were talking about Eric, and I asked him about what it was like to watch Mario and Wayne during their primes. My cousin talked about all the incredible moves, hands, skating, shots, skill, etc. they had. Then he said to me: “Lindros can do all that stuff too, but I think he’d rather score a goal by shoving the puck down your pants and stuffing you into net with it.” Good stuff.

by FooFighter1124 on Jul 22, 2011 7:03 AM EDT reply actions

Lindros was an absolute monster from his rookie year through the 1997 Eastern Conference Finals. In the 1997-98 season, his production dipped and his injury problems began in earnest. He had been hurt before, but it never seemed to drag him down too much until then. Clarkie, like a neanderthal, bashed him publicly that summer. Lindros responded with a brilliant 1998-99 campaign, until Bob Boughner gave him a collapsed lung. That was really the beginning of the end of his time here.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Jul 22, 2011 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I am old enough to remember Lindros – in fact, he was the reason I started following hockey and became a Flyers fan. In 1999 a friend from the Philly area moved into my place in STL for a two-year break from the east cost. She was a HUGE Lindros fan, and came home every game night to watch…started explaining the game to me…and I was hooked.

The E Train was, as you say, the most dominant player on the ice, pretty much at all times. So sad, because so many things could have been very different and changed the outcome of his career: professional management. Better healthcare (I really think the Flyers as an organization had/has a real problem with bringing players back from injury too soon). And maybe Eric could have heeded the advice to keep his damn head up.

Thanks for the memories, Eric! I proudly bleed O&B in no small part due to you.

I was really unimpressed with that Bourne article.

Amateur capology is at its thickest in the off-season. “$1.7M for Marcel Goc(notes)? Why that’s at least $200K too much!” I do it as much as anyone, but I acknowledge that it would sure be nice to see more analysis of how Goc will fit in to the Panthers on-ice roster than their on-paper payroll.

This makes no sense. How does someone say that he is 200k overpaid (who would split a hair that fine anyway) without looking at the context of the team?

He conveniently leaves out the context though. Do they have to overspend some to hit the cap floor? Is it the cap’s fault that the NHL, NHL network and media discuss very little else during the offseason? Actually the NHL network is doing nothing at all right now.

Yes people do split hairs that fine. It’s silly but they do.

Which equates to getting bashed more on the interwebs because people don’t have a problem ragging on someone who takes it all in good fun.

Early Bird

The golf tourney got me thinking since I got my early bird letter in the mail yesterday. Anyone having a hard time deciding this year what to pick?

In game Zamboni Ride, watch warmups from the bench, watch the post game presser, WIP post game interview with a player, early access to the meet the team event, the high five (which I don’t have kids under 14 so no), ultimate wfc tour, vip seating for the meet the flyers taping on csn, autographed item, open skate on the flyers ice and fan gear discounts.

The wife and I are at a stalemate.

Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

The 2nd paragraph is the short list of what we get to pick from (one benefit) for our early bird season ticket renewals. Maybe that makes more sense. I haven’t done the meet the flyers taping yet so I’m leaning towards that but the wife wants to either do the early access to the meet the team event or the warmups from the bench. We’ve done the warmups from the bench before though. Decisions decisions.

Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

No, I know exactly what you are talking about, I’ve been a season ticket holder for years. I’m talking about your transition from the golf outing to “hey, what should I pick”. It was an odd transition, that seemed forced.

Was thinking golf outing as charity benefit and transition to our early bird benefit. Did you decide on yours? I’m just brainstorming and golf outing triggered it.

We never do the early bird stuff, just not a big deal for us. If I had kids I’d pick the warm ups or skating to take them to, but as an adult, none of that stuff gets me too excited.

Yeah if my kids were younger (not 18 and 21) and going away to college I’d probably pick the Zamboni ride or the High Five. I was thinking the autographed thing too but I know that’s always hit and miss. Usually we agree on what we want to do but since we’re not sure I figured I’d get some feedback to help our decision making process.

Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

Just a general comment

I’m surprised there’s not much Couturier hype coming out. Maybe we’re still in a state of semi-shock after the trades. But maybe an article on a guy who could be a franchise player will further disintegrate the ‘BSH is just a group of Negadelphians hating on everything’ perception. That said, I haven’t been on the Fly-Bys for a while so maybe he’s been discussed.

One thing’s for sure: this kid will have a high defensive zone start and a good Corsi at some point in his career. In juniors his coach had to force him to play offense (which he did very well, considering he led the Q in scoring in the season before last) because he would rather do the hard work in his own zone. He’s even been tried as a defender, which could be an option for the powerplay.

That said, he’s not going to be a Flyer this season unless something very unexpected happens, and maybe that’s why there doesn’t seem to be much hype.

Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, he will also always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

by PursuitOfLappyness on Jul 22, 2011 8:03 AM EDT reply actions

You’re right there’s not as much hype but I think it’s because they know he’s a slide rule player this year (at least I thought that was where they were going to stick his contract. I could be wrong though…just ask Geoff about my Bryz love ha!)

Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

That’s true, he’s likely to be a slide rule player, which downs some of the hype. I admit that when we found out our #2 pick in 07 was not going to budge on staying in college for a while my JVR buzz died down a bit.

But we shouldn’t forget that the Flyers haven’t had a prospect this highly regarded and potentially NHL ready coming out of the draft since 03 with Jeff Carter (in any year outside 03, Carter would have been a top 5 pick, so the Flyers did extremely well picking him up at 11).

Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

It is pretty exciting that we ended up with him. For most of the offseason I was thinking we were pretty much not going to see a selection until the third round (maybe pickup another pick somewhere for a minor trade.) This all happened so fast when we dealt Mikey and Jeff but it just seems like the young talent in retun will really benefit us in the long run (especially if Schenn and Couturier play to the level of expectation.) We have a pretty stellar young core to work with now I think.

Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

I am super hyped for this kid.

Again, the fact we can’t fit him on the team period this year, without moving contracts has diminished that quite a bit.

The fact, that this means hes back to the Q where he’s dominated the entire league for 2+ years is a buzzkill too. If he could even go to the AHL this year on a slide rule/there weren’t rules to prevent it, I would be excited about that as well.

Baisically the orginization is crushing my hopes for a bigger development spike for him this year, so like the JVR thing for you, its a bit muted.

Yeah, as you guys have said, I’m excited about him, but being slide rule’d has kind of put him on the back burner in my mind. Still very, very much worth keeping an eye on, though.

the short of it: I really didn’t get along with my college roommates (we were in a quad; 3 of them knew eachother, all were the same year, and they came a branch campus). Well, 2 of them took on the utilities of the apartment, and to my knowledge, only one of them had their mail forwarded to their residence back home. Well, I just got an email yesterday from our landlord saying that the power was turned off, and that our lease explicity states that the utilities must remain on until the next set of people move in.

Well, I get an email saying we violated our lease and that if we didn’t fix it by 5 pm then the landlord would go down to the district magistrate, and go grab a civil case against us for violating our lease. I texted the one guy saying if you need money, you need to tell me, and posted on his facebook wall saying the same. I’ve yet to get a response from either regarding the issue, and well I’m fully expecting a civil case letter coming in the mail shortly

I don’t want Bob to go anywhere. But I kinda have faith in the FO to not deal him unless they get a good deal for him.

I’ve said this before, but I feel Holmgren’s pretty good at the trading game but pretty poor with the salary cap. So some of the trades where Homer gets fleeced are on closer inspection a product of cap mismanagement (see Gagne, Simon). On the other hand, when he has room to work something out he does alright. So far this offseason we’ve seen a trade for Bryz, a trade sending Carter to CBJ, a trade sending Richards to LAK and a trade sending Versteeg to FLA. I’d say all of those trades got us solid returns (yes, even Versteeg, anyone who thinks that we got fleeced there forgets the price of a roster player at the deadline skyrockets. Versteeg was a late 1st and a 3rd then, he is an early 2nd and a 3rd now. Just the way the market works).

Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, he will also always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

by CSneer on Jul 22, 2011 8:52 AM EDT reply actions

It’s Lindros, w/ one s. For awhile bringing up Lindros was a touchy subject for his falling short of his grand expectations. They hedged half the team (don’t forget Foppa) to re-build around the guy only for his tenure to end in a bitter name-calling dispute. It wasn’t pretty and most people wanted to forget about him and embrace the new wave of guys like Preems, Gags and later Richie. Now that our team has blown up and Mike Richards is not the next Bobby Clarke, it seems more acceptable to reflect and appreciate Lindros’ accomplishments rather than dwell on the terms that he left on.

Salary Cap

I will say, it will allow smaller market teams to compete better. But past that, it will make teams about financially genius moves instead of about acquiring the best talent. That is something fans and the front office will have trouble with seeing or understanding. Just my two cents.

Bourne

I took his article another way. If you’re a ten year old kid and you hear your favorite team just signed a big star player are you telling mom and dad to run to the store and buy the new jersey or are you crunching the numbers on capgeek to try to figure out if your team paid too much for him? Instead of being happy you got a star you’re worried about the domino effects of what will happen to the other players on your team because of the cap. I think especially to the casual observer it takes a lot of the fun out of being a fan but that’s the business of the NHL.

Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

But what this argument fails to realize is that:

a) It’s not the cap that does this. MLB has the same problem (Howard doesn’t deserve $25 million! ARod is overpaid!);
b) It’s not just sports this affects. People complain Congressmen make too much money. People complain CEOs make too much money. People complain the rich make too much money;
c) If you want to say we should all be ten again, well, gee, who doesn’t agree? That has nothing to do with the salary cap, or hockey, or sports. That’s life.

a) I think people complain more about MLB but MLB doesn’t have a cap. I took his article as he’s attacking the cap.

b) Agree but no one is going to salary cap congress, CEO’s or the rich.

c) I never said we should all be ten again. I said if a ten year old had to decide whether or not he was going to be happy his team signed a star vs having to figure out dollars and sense and how this new star would fit “under the salary cap” he’d want to do the former. That has to do with the cap, hockey has a cap, and hockey is a sport. I agree with you…that’s life.

a) Exactly Geoff’s point, the cap doesn’t create the problem.
b) And again, that’s Geoff’s point, it has nothing to do with the cap, it’s a problem with or without the cap
c) Again, Geoff’s point is, even without the cap, people, like in the MLB, will still say X player makes Y too much, or is over paid in general. It’s part of life and will exist with or without the cap. The 10 year old kid is still faced with the choice, happy about super star X playing for the team, or upset about super star X’s salary.

$25 million for Howard isn’t a decision based on fitting the roster into a dollar window on par with every other team in the league. No cap = no reason not to throw the money at him if the team has the ability to pay for him.

If the NHL had no cap and the Flyers had the resources to sign Bryz and keep Carter and Richards would they have done so? I wonder…

It doesn’t have to be, you are missing the point still. People will complain about salaries and over payments regardless if there is a cap or not. People will evaluate talent versus pay regardless if there is a cap or not. It’s occurrence is not based on the existence of a cap.

That’s the point of Geoff’s problem with the Bourne article. The cap doesn’t create those type of complaints, thoughts, or evaluations.

You sir are a gentleman of four outs!

by DLJr on Jul 22, 2011 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I think that’s why I said I looked at it from a different viewpoint (than Geoff’s.) I said in my original reply I agreed with him about people complaining regardless of if there’s a cap or not. You can’t stop people from doing that.

I think it’s more you’re missing my point than I’m missing yours. My point has nothing to do with people complaining about it and whether or not they would complain about it if there was or wasn’t a cap. It has everything to do with the cap hindering a team to go out and get the best talent regardless of financial limitations put on by a salary cap. Again if the Flyers could add Bryz and not get rid of Carter and Richards and they had the financial ability as an organization to do it…would they? Now I wonder if 10 year old kid would be happy to see Richards, Carter and Bryz all in Flyers jerseys together.

Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

Instead of being happy you got a star you’re worried about the domino effects of what will happen to the other players on your team because of the cap.

That was your main point correct? And Geoff point is, even without a cap, and worrying about domino effects there will always be a concern over player payment and movement. Because even without a cap, there exist internal salary limitations where dominoes may still have to fall, and as long as salaries are public knowledge you will always have the choice to either just be happy that Player X was acquired, or bummed because it cost you X dollars and/or player Y. The concerns exist with or without a cap, however, CapGeek wouldn’t be there, so that point will still stand for you.

You sir are a gentleman of four outs!

by DLJr on Jul 22, 2011 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

This is the point that I think Bourne is missing, that every team operates on a budget regardless of whether that budget is imposed by a cap or an owner. Therefore on every team it is important to spend that limited budget efficiently to get the most production possible from the money you have. A Buffalo fan should be glad that the team added Leino and that he will help their team because their budget just went up apparently, but they should also be bummed that the increased budget wasn’t spent a little more efficiently.

That’s the difference I was trying to emphasize between cap/no cap. If the Flyers (for example) could just go out and sign Bryz and not have to juggle cap space then 10 year old can go get the Bryz jersey and we go on our merry way into next season.

Instead…we have what we have. This series of events doesn’t have to happen if the Flyers were allowed to set their own internal limitation.

Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

Here is the 1st main problem, you are limiting this example to the Flyers, the article was not. You are also assuming all 10 year olds support a team that has an internal budget significantly higher than the cap. The 2nd big problem is that you are assuming you know what the Flyer’s internal cap is, and that it would be enough to keep everyone that would make everyone happy. You have no idea if that is the case. Who knows, maybe it is, but maybe only for 1 season, and next season trades have to be made to fit their LRBP, and that 10 year old is crying in your lap again.

If your example wants to exist solely in fantasy land, then find, I concede, you’re right. But if you want to dip in to reality at all, you are missing the point.

You sir are a gentleman of four outs!

by DLJr on Jul 22, 2011 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I was in the middle of typing “that’s all well and good for 10 year olds in the Philadelphia area, but what about the 10 year olds in all the cities that won’t spend $100M and have to watch their star players be bought by Philadelphia and Toronto and New York and Detroit each year?”

by Eric T. on Jul 22, 2011 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

You are both correct…and this is the same argument small market teams in MLB use to complain about top heavy big market franchises getting the pick of the litter to field a ball club.

Since the Flyers are listed in the top 5 in Forbes list of the NHL’s most valuable franchises I considered them a candidate for this example. No one knows if they could afford to keep that team together…but without a cap they certainly could try to.

Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

I think I understand what you’re saying, but it doesn’t seem to be terribly related to Bourne’s article.

The article (as I understand it) is that fans shouldn’t care what players make if their team isn’t in a Blackhawks-like right-up-against-the-cap situation, that Florida fans should be glad Goc will improve their team rather than concerned about whether he is overpaid. He’s not arguing for or against a cap; he’s just saying that fans of teams that are below the cap shouldn’t fret about whether their team’s signings are bargains.

Your point (as I understand it) is that you prefer for there not to be a cap so teams can just focus on getting the best players they can. You’re not talking about the teams that are well under the cap (as Bourne was), and you’re not talking about whether people will complain about people being overpaid (as Bourne was); you’re just saying you want teams to be able to focus on acquiring talent.

So the confusion (as I see it) arose because you labeled that as a viewpoint on Bourne’s article, which led Geoff to think you were saying that your desire to remove the cap would solve the issue Bourne discussed, of fans focusing on player’s performance relative to salary more than performance.

by Eric T. on Jul 22, 2011 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks Eric!

That’s a much better explanation. Thanks for clarifying it. I certainly agree with the logic of the cap/no cap not stopping people from complaining about salaries. That will always be the case.

Bourne started the article by stating that when he was a kid he couldn’t remember people talking about how much this player cost or that player cost (I believe.) That’s where the 10 year old came in for me as an example. I probably should’ve used a more clear example to get my point across.

The funny thing of that is, who does remember that stuff as a kid. I don’t remember my parents talking about their own finances when I was younger, but I know it happened in front of me all the time. Howard getting 25 million doesn’t, in theory, hamper the team’s ability to sign new players. The Phillies may have a self imposed soft cap, but there’s nothing stopping them.

I agree with the cap hurting the exciting times of free agency. There’s not going to be another year like this, and it was much more a negative fan reaction than a positive. When the Phillies signed Cliff Lee, there wasn’t so much overpaying naysaying. There’s nothing keeping the Phillies from overpaying! In fact, some were excited because it showed they were willing to start paying up for our fanbase.

Ed Snyder wants to pay more for our fanbase, but he is not able to.

So I’m going to the Canes’ Summer Fun Fest tonight. I hope there’s some cool players there (coughBooshorPitkanencough) to meet.

Would any of you say that getting a Canes’ Boosh shirt if they have them would be weird? Or any other gear you might recommend?

Sweet! That’d definitely be worth seeing at the fest. I’ll have to ask him and see if he’s going down there this year. We’re going up to Alaska at the end of the month though but we’re supposed to be back on the 5th so the timing kind of sucks for me. I’m pretty sure he has a late 80’s/early 90’s 5 so I know he’d definitely be into it if he’s going down there.

Where in particular are you headed, if you don’t mind me asking? When we went, we did a cruise from Vancouver through the Inside Passage (Ketchikan, Haines, Juneau, Sitka, Hubbard Glacier) to Seward. Then we rented a car and drove up Seward Highway to Anchorage, continuing on to Denali NP and Fairbanks.

Sweet…we’re doing the cruise thing (it’s my mom’s birthday so my brother, step brothers, step father, me, the wife and the kids are going) with stops in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria BC. The Victoria thing is kind of the last stop and it’s really just a short visit but we’ve got all kinds of plans for the other three stops.

We’re doing one excursion out to Mendenhall Glacier which I’m excited to see. I’ve never been up there (a coworker’s son goes to school at U of Alaska Anchorage but that’s about as much Alaska connection as I know of around here in the Lehigh Valley.) Any tips or anything you can share about things to see in Ketchikan would be sweet!)

Thanks hintzy!

In Ketchikan, my wife and I hiked pretty far up Deer Mountain. We didn’t make the summit because the trail markers end after the 2nd overlook and the snow became too deep to go searching for the route, but you shouldn’t have that problem (we were there in May). It’s a steep climb in spots, but a very good hike. After that, we wandered the town and Creek Street a little bit. The in-laws didn’t join us on the hike, instead they went to the Lumberjack Show or something like that. It sounded like it was cheesy, but fun.

Thanks!

ESPN

Thought this was interesting

It’s common in sports to see top prospects involved in packages for star players. That’s what the Iginla deal was, and it’s what the Los Angeles Kings did this summer when they dealt prospect Brayden Schenn as part of a deal for Mike Richards. In this kind of deal, the prospect is usually a marquee player, which means he’ll almost certainly contribute in the NHL.

These types of deals are rare because big trades are rare. But more importantly, it’s rare to have a player like Iginla come out of the deal. Since 1990, the best first-rounder who was traded before his NHL debut is Iginla, but after that, the next guys on the list are Wade Redden, Robyn Regehr and Keith Ballard. (We’re not counting Eric Lindros or Bryan Berard, since they refused to play for the teams that drafted them, which forced a trade.)

In other words, elite NHL players simply aren’t traded before they reach the NHL. This is because they either jump directly to the NHL from the draft, or they are so highly regarded that they are essentially untouchable.

by mantis toboggan on Jul 22, 2011 12:31 PM EDT reply actions

I agree that it’s interesting, but I think it’s probably equally true that players of Richards’ stature and youth aren’t traded very often either.

In other words, I wouldn’t take this to set a ceiling on our expectations for Schenn; I think it’s more about the rarity of a move like this.

by Eric T. on Jul 22, 2011 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh absolutely. I’ve just never seen any kind of analysis done on players traded before playing a single NHL game. He goes into more detail about reclamation projects like Angelo Esposito, and they tend to end poorly.

by mantis toboggan on Jul 22, 2011 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the piece on (I think Pension Plan Puppets) about Power Forwards also being nearly untouchable in trades (and Richards being on that list) because of their Rarity makes the whole trade very unique to any other situation.

My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
