BSH Roller Hockey Game
Ok folks, it's that time again. I know myself and quite a few others have been interested in getting together another day of pick up hockey. I think it would be wise to start now so that we can pick the date and location of where we are going to play and start to get all the details ironed out.
Date: So this is probably the most difficult thing to decide on. We are never going to be able to pick a date that works for every single person that wants to play. Sadly, that is the nature of the beast considering there are a lot of us, it is summer, we are all busy and live all over the place. So, with that said here are our options:
Saturday, July 30 (this coming weekend)
Sunday, July 31 (this coming weekend)
Saturday, August 6
Sunday, August 7
Saturday, August 13
Sunday, August 14
Saturday, August 20 (Back in consideration - ice hockey game will be held another date)
Sunday, August 21
I know in the past, we have tried to play on Sundays afternoons because there tends to be fewer conflicting activities. I included July 30 and 31 (this coming weekend) on the off chance that maybe we could get everything together this week. I doubt it, but you never know. Otherwise, I have listed the weekends of the upcoming three weeks. I know that the college students will have to be heading back to school in late August so I wanted to try and schedule the game before that.
Location: In the past we have played at the outdoor rink off of Marywatersford Road in Bala Cynwyd/Belmont, PA at the Belmont Hills Swimming Pool. So far, this has been a great place to play and seems to be reasonably centrally located. I'd say we should plan to play there again unless someone has any better suggestions.
Post Game Activities: This is less important but, I just wanted to throw it out there. Considering we are so close to Manayunk would people (over 21) be interested in stopping at one of the bars for a few beers in the ‘Yunk? Might not be practical considering we are going to be hot, sweaty and tired after playing hockey, but I know it has been mentioned in the past, and just wanted to gauge the group's interest.
Ok, well as things develop, I'll try and update the post with the most recent information. If I have left out anything or you have any other ideas, be sure to discuss them in the comments.
(Also, be sure to rec this post so that it stays at the top, thanks.)

Even though I can’t play, I’ll come out to watch and hang out at the bar afterward if it’s any weekend but the 13th/14th. I know the last time we tried to do Manayunk it didn’t work out too well because we were trying to watch a game (we ended up at Applebee’s up the road), but that doesn’t mean we can’t try again since there’s no Flyers game involved. Or people could congregate afterward to watch a Phillies game, as they have 1:35 games on the 31st, 14th, and 21st. Just throwing it out there.
There’s another rink not too far away (Roxborough-ish, I think) that they ended up at last time, in case the one in Belmont Hills is taken.
Warning: Arguing the NHL CBA with me could be hazardous to your mental health. Proceed at your own risk.
I’m in the middle of figuring out when I’m moving south so if it’s Aug 20th (sorry to nitpick, but Aug 21/22 is Sunday/Monday) or Aug 21st, I can make it. I’ll be on the sidelines watching with Jenn but I can take pictures and hang out with everyone. It will be a great stop on my trip!
Good catch. Thanks. Fixed.

What is the general skill level? I own skates and a stick but haven’t played since i was 8 or so. I was a pretty sick goalie in floor hockey in gym but i’m thinking that’s a bit different.
All are welcome, no matter the skill level. We are just there to have a good time. You are more than welcome to play on feet (instead of skates) if you feel more comfortable doing so.

Sunday, August 7
Saturday, August 13
Sunday, August 14
All of the above are good dates for me. I am a old geezer (just turned 50) but still have some left int he tank and a wicked wrist shot. Not sure what my Corsi rating is though. I would be playing on feet and look forward to playing if the dates work out. Any idea on costs?
BTW is this where we were supposed to advise of our interest?
Thats my rant, bet it don't make a dent
Do me a favor Mitch, skip the weekend of the 20th, that’s when Open Ice is going to likely be put together again.

Really? Good to know. I’ll cross that off the list as a possibility.

I’ll try to confirm it a little sooner just to let you know, but that’s the weekend I was looking at after seeing when Travis could make the trip up. I also can push it back to the first weekend in September.

I will actually be in Philly and not Hershey this weekend, so I can potentially play this Sunday. That being said, I have next weekend off to, but will be working on my mountain house the weekend of the 13th/14th.
Anyone know if Kreider is going to any of these dates?
Look two responses up, dude.

I can do these weekends:
August 6-7
August 20-21
September 3-4

And since I’m partially planning the open ice around you, I’ll take either August 20th or September 3rd for Open Ice haha. So if August 20th ends up being a popular date (or even the 21st) for roller, I can just try for the first weekend in September for ice.

Yeah, well I don’t get to play hockey with my fiancee ever, and she willing suits up for these games despite only ever skating 2 times before the 1st one. It’s nice to get out there and have some fun and not take hockey so seriously. I also usually drink before hand, which makes it that much more fun as well.

Probably won’t be able to come this time, since I have a limited number of weekends between when I get home from NC and when I go back to school.
But if there’s any during the school year, I may be able to get there.

If I’m around that weekend but can’t make the game, I plan on at least trying to meet up for alcohol. Hell, if that falls apart, you two are invited back here to bar crawl State Street.
Sorry Van, but you’ll have to bring your own copy of the farmer and the cow since Jenn and I don’t own it.

would love to play been looking for a roller league to play in for a long time. I am from south jersey so it is a hike but would love to be involved. Would be very interested in any ice pick up as well. If there are any conflicts there are about 10 roller rinks I can think of off top of my head within 20 min from all bridges into Jersey. Also I am not sure where you play ice hockey at but I go to a rink in Mt. Laurel that you can get ice time at but even better you can play pick up games at in am and early afternoon for $9. So if you needed too could always go there for a pickup game on the cheap. I can do all dates on weekend for roller hockey and would put in the drive just to be able to get in a game!!!!
Got to be honest, I included the post game activities part specifically thinking of you, Vansteel. I’m with Travis; down to go out for drink after, no matter what.

about how how many of you cool cats (and possibly kittens) arrive for these tilts?
Do you all usually have full teams? Nothing worse than being on and endless shift in an august sun. When it comes to winter do you all do pick up ice hockey games?
i should be down for 2-3 games depending on the schedule. i’m right in fairmount so just a jump away. i miss playing roller hockey. Used to play at old york road skating rink in a summer league.
Typically there is enough for two lines per team at least. We tend to be less stringent about making this if you say you are going to then with Open Ice. With Open Ice, since it costs money and we typically cap it at 20 skaters and 2 goalies, if you say you are coming, and are a no show without a heads up, you pretty much don’t get invited back.
You sir are a gentleman of four outs!
We are shooting for that, or possibly the 1st weekend in September. I put these together through out the year at Aston Ice Works. We have a large gap in talent, so the better players tend to back off quite a bit to encourage a more fun and friendly environment for everyone.
You sir are a gentleman of four outs!
Aston? Just Google-mapped it and it’s almost a straight shot down I-95 from school (as in about 53 of 57 miles is spent on I-95), so I may be able to make an ice game sometime this year now that I have my car.
Can’t guarantee I’d play much. Or be any good. But still.

My fiancee, and TCNJ alum, played in the 1st 2, only skating two times before those games. She just borrowed a bunch of my old equipment, so being bad is no excuse.
And honestly, if you feel uncomfortable at any point, just speak up. I know last time, as the night wore on, we started skating a little harder and some of the beginners felt uncomfortable, but didn’t say anything. If you just pull me aside and let me know, I’ll make sure everyone slows it down a bit. It’s all about having fun, and getting the chance to play.
You sir are a gentleman of four outs!
I wouldn’t be able to make it until later in the year though. End of August is when I go back to school, and being in NC all summer means I’m going to need all my weekends when I get back to get ready.

Why not just use all the dates, and have people sign up, if we hit an arbitrary limit like 10, then it’s an official date, if we don’t get 10 or more, then you cancel that date. I am up for pretty much all of those dates and would love to get out as soon as this weekend, even if it’s less than official.

I voted for 8/14 because that Sunday is best for me. Will be flying to Bermuda on 8/21 so that weekend is no good.
I am coming all the way from Clinton NJ and by Mapquest am 1:40 away. Like I said I am 50 but don’t look a day over 49 and have played before but not for a few years. As long as I don’t have to go full tilt for 10 minute streches I will suck it up because I love playing.
Thats my rant, bet it don't make a dent
Random fact: My ex-girlfriends family is from Clinton. Know the Ercolano’s? There’s a guy that usually plays that comes from Phillipsburg, and I’m in Bethlehem if you’re up for car-pooling with 2 total strangers.
I'm kind of a dick.
By the way….just out of curiosity, do you use a puck or ball in these games?
Thats my rant, bet it don't make a dent
Puck. When I was goalie I prefer to use ball but everyone bitched so allowed them to switch. I much prefer balls to pucks though.

Bowing out
I am going to have to pass as this coning weekend work issues have raised their ugly head. The weekend of 20th and 21st are out due to vacation.
Vansteel, you commented earlier that you are in the Bethelhem area and there are pick up games you play in around there. I would love to play and am close here in Clinton so if you think those games would be open to a old fart like me I would certainly be willing the make the trip to play some.
Thats my rant, bet it don't make a dent
Absolutely. There’s a rink right off of Freemansburg Ave, within a mile of Rt. 33 that I go to sometimes. There’s also one at 4th and Gordon in Allentown, but the first one would probably be easiest for you.
I work a lot of weekends, and I never know in advance for sure, so it’s tough for me to hold true to any sort of schedule, but whenever I have off and the weather is nice I try to get up there. The games usually start at 9am, but I always get up there earlier to skate around and get loose. The skill level has varied greatly the times I’ve played, and there were some old-timers playing, so that shouldn’t be an issue.
I'm kind of a dick.
Do they all play on blades or do they allow foot players in those games? My blade skills are rather weak.
Thats my rant, bet it don't make a dent
It’s a mix of both.

He’s talking about the rinks in Allentown, not the BSH pickup game.
You sir are a gentleman of four outs!
Mainly blades, but there is this one Russian dude, Ivan, that plays on foot. But I think that’s mainly because everyone is afraid to tell him to put skates on. He doesn’t speak English, and everytime he gets the puck he just tries to shoot it as hard as he can at someone.
I'm kind of a dick.
Perhaps I could go a day that you do and you could introduce me as Andrej and I will learn a few Swedish phrases that translate to “I have hard slap shot” and “taste my wrath lazy American”. Being an old dude with grey hair and crazy eyes I think I could pull it off.
Thats my rant, bet it don't make a dent
We can try that, but I don’t really know the people that play. It’s different a lot of times, and I don’t really talk to them. To be honest, I don’t even like the majority of the guys that play. They think they’re really good (most aren’t) and think roller is better than ice (it’s not even close) It’s just a place to get in a pick-up game.
I'm kind of a dick.

Not sure I saw it, but do you have plenty of players? Do you need a goalie? I would be happy to play if there are goalies needed. I play @ NERC & HockeyDEK in Springfield. Let me know.
I won’t be there so they’re down a goalie.
