Down Goes Spezza:
Jagr- If I sign with Pittsburgh, you’re going to elbow me, aren’t you?
Pronger- 6 games, 3 periods, we each should have 10-12 shifts a game against each other. So, assume 20-24 elbows per game.
lolllllllllllllll
Pronger can do math?
Maybe he can tutor Homer.

"We knew each other from World Juniors," the rather shy Couturier said. "It’s pretty fun to be with someone you know."
"He’s quieter," his roommate said with a laugh. "He doesn’t talk a whole lot, but he’s my roommate here now and I definitely get along with him and enjoy being around him."
Get that a lot when you read about Couturier. People keep mentionining how he doesn’t talk much. I can only imagine how drab his interviews will be later in his career.
But if he’s putting up 80 points while playing solid defense, I don’t really care how drab those interviews are.
Schenn better know what he’s getting himself into. If he doesn’t play to a level that suggests he might be the next Mike Richards there will be sections of the media calling him a bust.
Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

Also someone should save a copy of Couturier’s ‘My First NHL Camp’ blog, basically covering the first day he stepped onto the ice as a member of the Flyers organization. It will be amazing to look back at in 20 years time if Couturier turns into a Flyers legend.

I recently read an article (forget where) where Sean expressed awareness of his quiet nature and indicated an effort on his part to be more outgoing when appropriate.
I didn’t see anything in his video linked above to be concerned with. He was animated (smiling several times) and looked the interviewer directly in the eye when answering questions.
I didn’t realize he was missing both his front teeth. That’s cool, no?
After watching Marcus Johannson play 3C for the Caps last year – and I grant that Schenn is better – it would be ludicrous to expect him to produce at a Mike Richards level over the course of the year. He’ll have his growing pains, but he’ll also be a lot better by the end of the year than he is at the start. Which is when the games really count, of course.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Kate Smith
I think the Flyers should announce that Lauren Hart will be singing God Bless America without Kate Smith from hereon in, with all due respect to the history behind it. I’m not sure how they could best word it but I’m sure there would be a way to appease both those who want to move on from the past and those who love the history.
So during the first round of the playoffs which the Flyers win in 6 games, just have Lauren Hart. Then during the second round of the playoffs the Flyers manage to split the games home and away to make the series 2-2, then they lose at home and face a must-win away. They manage to come away with a win and finally enter Game 7 at home. That’s when they decide to play Kate Smith as well. The crowd erupts, the Flyers win.
That’s the idea anyway.

You don’t retire a decades old tradition. I think a lot of teams are jealous of it actually. I’ll use the Caps as an example, since i’m in Virginia and see them several times per year. They’ve been around over 35 years and what do they have? They yell out ‘Oh’ during the anthem? boy, thats just awesome… And more recently, their ‘rock the red’ campaign? Sounds like a merchandising nightmare…Let’s just scare off the fans from buying road jerseys
I do like PursuitofLappy’s idea of having Lauren sing it solo, and bringing in Kate for the more important situations.
They borrowed yelling “Oh” during the anthem from the Baltimore Orioles. They did it long before Ovechkin was on the team, and now try to retroactively use him as the reason behind it.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
I thought they shouted “Red” because of Ovechkin.

The “red” thing grew out of a reaction to the “O” shouting.
People in the DC area got used to shouting “O” during the anthem by going to Orioles games – remember, no baseball in DC for loooong years, it was impossible to get a ticket to the ‘Skins for the average guy, the Bullets sucked….but the O’s were good (::sob::), cheap and right up 95. So we went to the games and learned to shout “O”.
In fact, I had zero idea that there were places where one did not shout during the anthem.
Anyway, we all dutifully shouted out at Cap Centre and the tradition transferred over to MCI/Verizon Center. Then people started objecting to the use of a Baltimore tradition for a DC team. So they started shouting “RED” in order to re-purpose the whole thing.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
They have been doing the Oh longer than for Ovechkin. I remember it being Oh-lie when they had Olie the goalie back years ago.

…yes, that’s what I said. I even remember it before Kolzig. As I said, I’m pretty sure it was just carried over directly by Orioles (aka O’s) fans.

Sean Couturier
Can’t help but look at him with his front teeth missing and say to myself, “Is that Bobby Clarke?”
My teams are the Flyers, Phillies and the Steelers. Deal with it.
From the CSN Philly article about Schenn’s contract talks…
A restricted free agent, he has not signed a new contract with the Flyers, and his qualifying offer came from the Kings before he was traded.Interesting, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that before, because that means they sent his offer out pretty early. I figure the Flyers would be required to give him whatever the Kings offered him if he wanted to sign that original offer sheet, but I wonder if there’s some minor difference in the way negotiations go that’s a sticking point. Obviously not something major that can’t be overcome, but I can’t help but wonder.
Warning: Arguing the NHL CBA with me could be hazardous to your mental health. Proceed at your own risk.
I didn’t know Schenn’s contract was up for negotiations, or did you mean Simmonds?

apparently contract talks are still ongoing, but in a positive manner. My guess is: Simmonds wants to be paid like a top 2 line scorer, and not a grinder garbage goal player like the Flyers want him to be.

however this is exactly the type of player we need on a top line
but because we traded all of the two way players away, you need Simmonds big body on the 3rd line. Sacrifices have to be made. This is what happens when you fail to bring in a defensive specialist, you waste guys that should be on the 1st or 2nd line

Geoff sarcastically has been saying Lavy doesn’t use defensive matchups with his forward lines and I am firm believer he doesn’t play matchup so it doesn’t matter. There is no defensive checking line on this team. Roll 3 lines don’t start Briere’s line in the defensive zone. Specific matchups will be played with the D.
but he does use matchups…I’d argue looking at the +/- from games where the Flyers played Crosby and Malkin, and seeing if Richards would end the game with a -2 or -3

I am sure Richards would be out against one of Crosby or Malkin because those guys are the guys that the most shifts like Richie and Carter did.
zone start Carter and Nodl have the worst zone start and they rarely played together
and as the season went on Carter Giroux were drawing tough comp as well
so because 2 players have the worst zone start and rarely played together, it means that Lavvy just rolled 3 lines, independent of defensive matchups?
Perhaps when Lavvy switched lines so often, Carter and Nodl found themselves on the 3rd line?

Of course not that was the quickest result I could find to imply my point.
I can’t prove my opinion but that is just my observation some more capable with numbers can try to break it down and it seems like Eric has.
Here is another one.
ES-TOI/G
If Richards was matchup’d agains the opposition top line who gets the most ice time he should lead the team in ES-TOI/G right
However he is 4th in ES-TOI/G
Danny B lead the team at 15:10 per game. But the results are pretty even for the 3 centers.
Danny B – 15:10
Carter – 14:39
Giroux – 14:10
Richards – 13:46
(only 1 more second than Scott Hartnell at 13:45)
not necessarily. How many PP minutes do guys like Stamkos get?

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Jul 7, 2011 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions
if a team only has one scoring line, wouldn’t that mean that Richards would get less even strength ice time, if he’s playing in a strictly defensive role?
I’m sorry, but saying that ES Ice time average per game correlates to players not being used in a defensive manner just doesn’t make sense to me

qualcomp wise
Richards – 0.018
Giroux – -0.027
Carter – -0.008
Briere – -0.047
not sure how much of a difference that is though Richards was matchup nearly has poorly as these guys for example.
Zetterberg 0.103
Marleu 0.115
Toews 0.079
Dubinsky 0.073
Palkane 0.068
I am going to start randomly puking out statistics and smearing them all over the place and claiming causation

I am just trying to give qualcomp a little context. What qualcomp should a center who is matchup’d against top line have? What should a shelter’d center have. There is no context for the number.
Eric and I prefer CorsiRelQoC, if that means anything.

I was always relatively indifferent when it came to twitter. Being on BSH most of my day has actually built up my spite for it. For the life of me I can’t figure out why people talk about who they tweet or who tweets them on BSH, isn’t that what twitter is for?!? Keep that shit there unless it pertains to some kind of trade/signing.

Yeah he got what he wanted. That doesn’t mean there weren’t negotiations and weren’t there reports of a 7.5 million dollar cap hit.
A) If he got what he wanted, what was negotiated? “I want 7 years $50 million.” “Uh, we’ll give you 7 years, $48 million.” “Close enough for Bryz.” “Shit, wait. Tack on two years and $3 million so our cap hit is down.” “Whatever, the Bryz won’t play that long.”
“It was a pleasure negotiating with you.” “Ha, you call that negotiate? I get what I want.”
B) The reports were 7 years, $50 million. That’s a $7.14 mil cap hit. Not $7.5 mil.

Everyone will say the exact same thing who resigns with a team. That doesn’t mean there weren’t negotiations that there was a take or leave situation. You are WIPing his comments. He says this there for it implies something else. It could be typical sports BS comment that you are jumping all over. Things are also lost in translation you are just reading into way too much into a rather bland comment.
What did Pronger say we resigned him about Richards and Carter when they signed the 10 year deals etc.. it is all pretty much the same thing.
Don’t negotiations entail each side presenting an offer and then meeting in the middle?
Doesn’t look like they met in the middle, it looks like Bryz’s offer was what the Flyers took. That’s not a negotiation, that’s a robbery.

Not when you are a UFA. You don’t know what happend. If I was agent I would like the team make an offer and work form there.
you are giving him the benefit of doubt, I am not. Chances are, it’s somewhere in the middle. However, I think the middle is located closer to Bryz than it was the Flyers
I eat sentimentality for breakfast, but stats stop me dead in my tracks
by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Jul 7, 2011 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions
Of course it was he has all the leverage going on the UFA market in a two weeks with no history or loyalty to the Flyers. He is going to get what he wants he is a UFA, he can find a team that will give him want he wants and if not he will then compromise, But to say there wasn’t any back and forth is ridiculous especially on a 9 year deal that is structured to get rather lower the expected cap hit.
he can find a team that will give him want he wants and if not he will then compromise.
How did that work out for Nabakov?
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
And where was that contract? What happened to all his leverage?
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
And once again Nabokov at 36 is not the same as Brzy at 31 especially this UFA period Brzy would have gotten much much more on the open market.
I didn’t mean to but I wasn’t sure if you were implying Brzy would have also failed to have his demands met on the open market.
He wouldn’t have had his demands met on the open market. That is pretty clear. Just because he had his demands met with the Flyers doesn’t mean he had all the leverage. It means the Flyers frigged up the negotiations, or lack there of and gave the guy what he wanted.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.

Seriously, this is how the "negotations" with Bryz went down
Harry Doyle: Hello everybody. Harry Doyle here, welcoming all you Wahoo maniacs to the year’s first session of Tribe Talk. As you know, the Indians had a Cinderella season last year. Despite the fact that toxic owner Rachel Phelps wanted the team to lose so she could move it to Florida, the Indians won the American League East for the first time since divisional play began. Rachel’s gone now, thank God, having sold the team to retired Indian third baseman Roger Dorn, after a long, hard fought series of negotiations.
[flashback to negotiations]
Roger Dorn: Mmmight be willing to go as high as a hundred.
Rachel Phelps: 120.

The dark horse – Oliver Lauridsen!!! Anyone that was there who can confirm that?
Maxime Talbot - in the Orange and Black ... better than chocolate and peanut butter!
I love Lauridsen, but it’s because of St. Cloud St. I still don’t think he leaps Marshall or Gus.
I HAVE to be mad because you keep saying, "why you heff to be mad?" in every other post.
Agreed. From last year:
Oliver Lauridsen (D, St. Cloud State) was pretty impressive. Today, he ripped a slap shot past Morrison from the top, ringing off the far post. For a 7th round pick, he could turn out to be a pretty solid AHL player. I’m not sure if he’ll be able to hold a job in the NHL, but he seems to be a good character guy. All during camp, he was throwing his weight around and agitating forwards – Rinaldo, specifically. He probably spends another year in college, but after that he should get a chance on the Phantoms.
If the Flyers didn’t sign Lilja, I’d say he was a darkhorse to make the NHL team (Behind Marshall and Gus). But with Marshall and Gus as darkhorses to make the NHL team, Lauridsen has no shot. Plus he’s coming off an injury last year.

I missed the first couple drills with him yesterday, but he looked good in the physical drills, and seemed to be skating around smoothly.
OH! and he is a giant.
From Parts Unknown.
Goalies I'd rather have on my team than Ilya Bryzgalov
Since in a vacuum is the phrase around here, these would be goalies that I’d take on from the plausible scenarios instead of the monster contract. Also, I would still do all of the moves the Flyers had made, from trading Carter to Signing Lilja. Here we go
Varlamov (I’d trade the picks for that price in a heartbeat)
Nabokov (I’d trade for him, nothing to see here)
Vokoun (even at 3.5-4 million 2 year deal, sign me up)
Bernier (hell, when we swung Richards I would’ve asked for him in the deal)
Boucher (bitch and complain all you want, the goalies were fine. Lavvy just sucks at managing goalies)
Conklin (career backup who can spot start Bouch)
Mike Smith
Dwayne Roloson
Jaroslav Halak or Carey Price (when Carter was rumored to be going anywhere)
I know some of these players y’all disagree with, but you can repair your team via free agency after a bad train. Bad contracts are far more destructive, and that is what Bryzgalov is, a bad contract
The Flyers had so many options

Yes, but I must argue against Carey Price for his whole career, I’ve pigeon holed myself into it. I wouldn’t really want Varlamov either with Bob already on board, but good lord did I want Vokoun for cheaper/shorter time.
all of those options are better than Bryzgalov
Varlamov doesnt work out? You lose a 1st and 2nd rounder. But you don’t hinder yourself on a yearly basis

I don’t think a 5.66 cap hit is that hindering good players make 5-6 million. Kimmo’s contract is more hindering but he has been worth every penny.
Kimmo isn’t holding up the maturation of your future starter in net
Bryz is
In that context, it’s extremely hindering

22 year old guys behind a 5.67 cap hit thru 9 years is a hindrance. Let’s say even if Bryz only plays 5 years of his contract. Bob’s maturation process is hindered to the point of not being fixed

if anything having Brzy here gets the Flyers another contract with BOB at backup dollars if he started this season he would be getting Halak money next year probably anyway
what kind of fucking self respecting goalie who is confident in his play and has already seen a season of NHL hockey, and had success, would take less money and sit on the bench?

Maybe. But a lot of goalies don’t mature until well into their twenties. I agree that him only playing ~20 games a year isnt ideal, but he can adjust to the game in practice and adjust to NA just by being here. Hopefully Bryz being russian feels the desire to tutor a young russian.
so you’re going to pay 1.85 million dollars to babysit a kid? That’s over 7.5 million dollars in net, investment wise. You know how crazy that sounds? That money is better spent elsewhere, suring up an aging blue line, or bringing in a Superstar.
No self-respecting person leads a team to a playoff birth then says ok I’m ok to sit on the bench for another 5 years, no biggie

one season for goalie doesn’t mean anything BOB could be the next Brzy or the next Nittymaki it is still very much up in the air.
Yeah that’s the problem. I think I’ve talked myself into lower expectations for Bob since his jersey was bought for me and he was in danger of a sophomore slump. I didn’t want to accept him as my savior, I must have subconsciously known there was another one coming.

Halak / Carey Price deal would be the perfect comparable to BOB if he continue to play this well for 60 games per.
A) Carey Price has a $2.75 mil cap hit.
B) St. Louis overpaid for Halak.
C) Because Halak had a 0.933 ESS% in the playoffs the year before.
So even if I give you the “perfect comparable”, he has a 50% chance of getting $3 million. Bryzgalov just got $5.67 million.

I’m not saying that we didn’t screw over Bob here, I’m just saying it’s not a cut and dry “his career here is over” situation. He’ll likely be rumored as trade bait for the next couple years if he stays, but I’m of the opinion that he was rushed into a starting role, and that he can use the time as a backup on a good team to develop.

Well no, I’m optimistic too. I like Bryzgalov as a player, but Cap hits and wasted money tarnish many careers. I just get pissed because the Flyers had an oppurtunity to take their time and sign a goalie. This wasn’t like a trade with a closing window. They deliberately went out there, Bryz told them a price, and they took it, without even a whimper

Yeah. I mostly blame Snider. I think we can field a very successful team for years to come with that cap hit, but not if we throw out future dumb contracts. When Hartnell and Timonen’s hits come off, in addition to random smaller ones (Lappy, Shelley), I think we’ll be ok.
I will never admit that bryzgalov is worth the money he gets, unless he pulls Thomas like numbers

If I may, I’d like to add to the pall you’ve cast this morning re: Bob/ Bryz by asking what we should do about Backlund. He’s got a one-way deal this year, he isn’t waiver-exempt, and won’t see the NHL w/ us. Am I alone in thinking we should try to move him sometime this year to a team in need of a backup? If he stays we’ll be spending a helluva lot on AHL goaltending this year.
We would probably need to see if someone around the league gets injured before moving him, like the Montoya trade last year. Besides, we need to stockpile 7th rounders so that we can give them out like candy to teams w/ attractive pending FAs for the negotiating rights.
Stevie Y was said to have been scouting Backlund last year before he acquired Roloson.

Well one, the kid is what 24 now. Including playoffs, his career ESS% is 0.924. To say he is mentally weak is not only discounting his age, and the city he plays in, but discounting his actual performance.

I saw firsthand what we did to him in the playoffs a few years back. It forever cemented my views on him! Normally I’m up for argument but this is one thing I take a hardline on. I said he’d never win a cup. I know he’s a good goalie, but I don’t want him on my team!
I’ve been to every home playoff game for the past 10 years. Yet I can still step back and see who he is as a goalie. He was what, 21 or 22 then. You can take a hard stance all you want, and saying he won’t win a cup says next to nothing about him since that takes a team and luck. It’s fine if you want to be ignorant on this one, I’m just going to point it out.
I HAVE to be mad because you keep saying, "why you heff to be mad?" in every other post.
It’s been pointed out to me plenty. I decided to make an up to two decade long prediction, and I’m sticking to it. I’ve softened on my original stance that he wasn’t very good – he’s clearly got skill, and is at times dominant .. but I won’t be backing down, and I don’t want him on the Flyers, at the risk of my prediction coming true in an ironic way!
He’ll also bang every sorority girl at temple while smoking an entire king sized pack of smokes at the same time.

In my book, the goalie can snort coke off of strippers’ ass, fight body guards, and as long as he’s ready to stop the puck, I don’t care. How I think of hockey the goalie is on his own island, and operates by a different set of rules

In general I agree. As you note, there are a handful of goalies on your list I’d rather not have (Smith, Price, Conklin, and even Rolo) and a few I’d add (Anderson, Dekanich, Emery). I’d absolutely take that deal with Washington for Varly, especially since he could be ‘sheltered’ in taking only a half-season, while Bob got the rest – so his injury issues wouldn’t drag him down. (Then you trade the lesser one in a couple years once value has built.)

It’s a shame to hear about the Trenton affiliate shutting down. They had a really good model there when they were the Titans. It was a neutral jersey and insignia (I always loved the way they used the Trenton Makes bridge in the top part of the sweater: http://images39.fotki.com/v1285/photos/2/255242/5682253/ntonTitanscirca2005SPauthentic-vi.jpg), and you’d go to the arena and see fans wearing jerseys from the Flyers, the Islanders, the Rangers, and the Devils. As soon as the Devils took over and changed the jerseys and insignia to match the parent club, though, almost all of the non-Devils fans abandoned the club in droves and there weren’t enough Devils fans around to fill the void.

Ah yeah, that was me that brought up your outlet pass comment. Found it interesting that he had such a solid “He will be an NHL player” view.
From watching Marshall play during the Phantoms, near the end, his defensive play was very good. Sometimes he got out of position trying to make a big hit, but otherwise his play on defense was sound. His passing from the back to mid-ice though was not as good. I wish I could find the stats, but I would be curious how many turnovers he had.
I dont know if you can make the NHL just based off of defensive play. You will need to be able to move the puck.

Also OT, I’m rather amused that the only person at work who has come to discuss the various trades and signings with me is the solitary Pens fan. He’s an actual Pens fan, having grown up near there, not a bandwagoner. None of the (numerous) Caps fans have said anything about hockey since their season ended, nor have I heard them talking to each other about the Caps moves.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
Hahaha, this is definitely what my wife thinks. Anytime she asks me “what are you reading?” or “what did your dad call about?” and the answer is “hockey,” she’s like “why? it’s summer! there’s nothing to read/talk about!”
Yesterday, the call from dad was about Jagr (he just found out). I tried to explain this to her by comparing to a hypothetical situation of J.J. Redick transferring from Duke to Maryland, that he might score a lot of points, but we’d never feel right about it. Her response was “but that would have never happened.” I just can’t explain hockey to her. :-p
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
So if Pronger signs with the Pens can you explain it like Christian Laitner transferring to UNC?

If we were Duke fans (ugh, it hurts to even type that), then yes. But for us it would be more like Steve Blake transferring to Duke.
Laettner going from Duke to UNC would be more akin to Crosby being traded from Pittsburgh to the Rangers or Devils.

You’re not the only one having a strange day at work. Yesterday some POS murdered two children and left them in a car in the parking lot of a major client, about two blocks from my place of business. It’s all over the national news now. Apparently he wanted to get back at his girlfriend, who reported him for domestic abuse over the weekend, by killing the woman’s 3 and 4 year old kids.
Very quick personal opinions from training camp today....
Today they did all the defense in group 1 and all the forwards in group 2, no scrimmage. I’ll be honest and say that I was really looking for the guys we talk about all the time, and there are some guys I didn’t form opinions on. Obviously I wasn’t able to process every run by every player, but these are the things that seemed to stick. I tried really hard not to let confirmation bias in here, but these are some of my notes from 1 day of limited exposure.
For starters, I am not drinking the Testwuide Kool-aid, in fact I’m not even going anywhere near it. He had a really really rough morning, and receiving passes was not his strong suit today. Wellwood actually seemed to suffer from being teamed with him a few times, there was one drill where they were teams of 3 and on 2 runs Wellwood never even touched the puck because Testwuide bobbled it. Wellwood didn’t really stick out much today, but he didn’t seem to be doing really badly either.
Rinaldo has more skills than I gave him credit for. But IMO he had flashes of brilliance mixed with plenty of bobbles. Still way better overall than my expectations.
Read and Schenn looked pretty solid all the way through. The first run through one of the give and go type drills, Read had pretty much a perfect run, he scored Wellwood’s rebound and his own shot seconds later. Schenn has a real nice shot. Couturier looked good, but something minor was nagging me about him all day. Conditioning, maybe? I know he’s not supposed to be the best skater, but that didn’t seem to be it. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it was though, but I just don’t know if he’s strong enough to make a jump yet. I’m going to try to go to camp Saturday, too, and maybe it’ll all look better in a scrimmage. Huge potential though, he’s probably going to be great someday.
Harper was also really good in many of the drills. All the forward drills were offensively oriented today, but Ben Holmstrom held his own even though he’s supposed to be more of a defense oriented guy.
Gustaffson looked really sharp in the passing drills, which were the very first thing. I really like fundamentals in my hockey players, and Gus was really a fundamentals kind of guy today. Solid pretty much everywhere.
Bourdon bothered me all morning. I tried and tried to like him and say he was going to fix it in the next drill, but it wasn’t happening. He seemed frustrated to me, too.
When they were doing a defensive drill to try to keep a guy out of the crease, the difference between some of the guys was really apparent. Marshall shined by keeping his stick down and his positioning looked good, Blidstrand tried to get about 6 crosschecking penalties in one shift (literally that was all he did on one of the runs), and Bourdon just seemed off.
Hostetter seemed to skate pretty well and have a pretty good shot, but I definitely had limited exposure. I’m still wishing they would put sleeve numbers on practice jerseys, but I’m sure I’ll be beating that dead horse for a long time.
I have more notes, too, but that’s probably enough ranting. I half expect somebody else to get here and tell me they disagree with every thing I said, but oh well, I’m a CBA geek, not a scout.

my 2 cents is more notes is more better. We heart you for more than just your CBA knowledge. Any personal read on Luuko? (I have a bias because he’s coming up to my city for college next year and I am going to try to get a read on him if I can get into some UVM home games.)

I thought he was pretty sound and my overall opinion was reasonably positive. Didn’t stick out much and he wasn’t stellar, but his fundamentals seemed okay and I didn’t spot anything negative. He just seemed like he wasn’t ready to hang with some of that group yet; 19 and playing like he’s still 19, rather than 19 and showing the skill of a 23 or 24 year old.

He was at the other end of the ice. I was sitting on the bleachers right at the red line, and the guys who were on the other side by the player benches were harder to see. I saw some good things over there, but without sleeve numbers, it was really hard to identify who it was.

I was there for the second group only. Some brief comments:
I agree with the Testwuide review. Not impressed.
I thought Rinaldo struggled a bit on the early puck handling drills. But, he seemed to get better as the morning went along. He scored on Phillips with a really nice backhand. Also, saw him acknowledge a couple of small boys with their noses pasted to the glass. Good for him.
I thought Couturier looked good overall.
As someone mentioned yesterday, Sestito is big!
The one who really stood out for me was Placek.
Placek in a good way or a bad way? I actually wrote it down when he got yanked out of the deke drills at the beginning, my note says “Uh oh what was that?”, but that was the only bad note I had about him, I didn’t really get as far as forming an opinion about him.

And I’m with you that Rinaldo seemed to get better as it went along, but not perfectly. Like he was rough on the first few deke/stickhandling drills, then he aced the ones where they only used the toe of the blade, and then he kept up for a while until the last few really hard ones where he lost the puck on every run. He was directly in front of me for those.

Then he counts against the NHL cap for this year and next. All to save about 1/100th of what Snider just willingly gave away to Breezy?

So they pay him about 550k fewer actual dollars, and when you subtract the 125k the new guy gets, they have 425k in savings.
And for that, they have an extra 500k in cap hit this year and next? I don’t see them making that move.
Yeah. Why buy him out when we can lose him on reentry waivers and have the whole cap hit against us.
Re-Entry waivers is only half the cap hit; but it’s still 750k I’d rather not have on there.

But those are the AHL game totals, not NHL…
The Re-Entry Waiver procedure will not, however, be applicable toAccording to his full movement history, he’s only spent 8 days on an NHL roster in the last two years combined.
Veteran Minor League Players defined as follows: (i) for goaltenders, Players who have: (A) played in 180 or more professional games in North America (NHL, AHL and ECHL), and (B) not spent more than 80 NHL games on NHL roster over the prior two (2) seasons or more than 40 NHL games on NHL roster in the immediately prior season

I think he was. He missed 32 games while on LTIR (those count), then we didn’t demote him until 3 weeks later (even though there was christmas break in there, he was still on the roster for at lest 6 games, possibly 7 depending on whether or not the day he was activate counts. Then he was up for the final two games. So that’s 40, possibly 41.
And the previous year he was on an NHL roster for 80 games, I think, maybe even 81. He was in the AHL for 3 measly days before he got put on re-entry and we claimed him. So that’s 40 last year, and 120 over the last two.

‘Veteran Minor League Player’ re-entry waiver exemption
Ok, I’m not familiar w/ this rule. Would you please expand on this, including any differences in how the rule may apply differently between skaters and goalie?
Just to reiterate above, Leighton does not qualify for this and requires re-entry waivers. Bicashihua does qualify, because he barely spent any games on an NHL roster last year.
The Veteran Minor League Player exemption is for guys who are not on an NHL roster for either 40 games the previous season or 80 total over the last two. Playing in actual games is not a requirement, they just have to be on the roster for that number of games. Time spent on LTIR counts towards the 40/80 game marks. They also have to have played 180 ‘professional’ games when you total up NHL + AHL + ECHL. It’s for true, minor league only guys who never spend time on an NHL roster.
Leighton is way, way over the 80 game mark, so it’s not even close for him. Bacashihua is way, way under it.

So, as far as Bicashua is concerned, this exemption trumps being paid 125k at the AHL level (as opposed to 105k or less)?
Yes. If he made less than 105K, you wouldn’t even enter the paragraph to start going through the processing to determine if he’s eligible, you’d kick out before you started. This is at the bottom on the paragraph, and overrides the conditions for re-entry waivers defined within the process.

You have to count the days on the roster manually. That tells you the dates he was called up and the dates he was waived, but you have to figure out how many games the team played between those dates.
I already did it for you, it was 40. Maybe 41, but it doesn’t matter.
In 09-10, we got him in Decemeber, but the games he was on the roster in Carolina count toward his total.

Just a question playing into my strategy here, how many times can you put someone on waivers?
Following Dan Carcillo where ever he may go
Giving up isn't an option
There isn’t like a career limit; but waiver paperwork isn’t required for every single demotion. The same set of papers is good until the player plays 10 NHL games or spends 30 cumulative days on an NHL roster. So if you waive somebody to send them down and they clear; then call them back up and they clear; if they’re only on the roster 5 days and you send them back down you don’t put them through waivers again. I know that’s going to be confusing. But the original papers don’t expire until that 10 game or 30 day mark is reached, even if they go up and down 10 times before they reach the expiration point.

Probably because it is the most accessed document on my entire computer? (Yes, I’m serious). I’ve read it cover to cover over a hundred times, plus reference it more than once per day….

Okay I’ll concede that it don’t reread that 80+ page exhibit that’s an example of HRR calculation every time. But I read the rest of it!

I’m thinking this means a move is in the works involving Bob.

Backlund could also be loaned to Europe.

I mean, dude is clearly not going to come back after this season. Why would they keep him around?
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Backlund could actually be the backup if they did trade Bob. I know, perish the thought of trading Bob at all, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Not necessarily Bob, but yes, someone is leaving. Assuming Simmonds and Talbot are resigned, Bicashua takes them to 49 contracts. Couturier would be 50, but subject to the slide rule I presume. Looks like Homer’s gonna slice & dice again.
I’m thinking this means a move is in the works involving Bob.
I second this motion. I’m very surprised the discussion has devolved to where poor DG has to get into the fine points of minor-league waivers. Bob traded, Leighton or Backlund to back up Bryz, this guy to be the 2nd at the AHL level. Basically replaces all those better guys the Flyers let silp through their fingers stupidly in June.
FYI, the above paragraph also would suggest that they would not use a precious 50-contract space on someone until camp, UNLESS there was something else up.

annnddd…I see the retracted Twitter discussion now. Never mind.

I have no idea where the “two day” went.

I hate twitter so much
That’s also what his movement history in his Player Bio on the hockey news says, for what it’s worth. I was just about to say something about that.

I think the Devils and Kovalchuk should now sue the NHL for age discrimination. They’re essentially saying he CAN’T play until he’s 44.

I was under the impression that anyone could write on Bleacher report. You mean they only let specific bad writers steal make up news stories for them?
