That quote alone is the icing on the cake for me. I liked the signing (especially with the trades). But his quotes about Pens fans? Priceless.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I love the quotes. That goes a long, long way towards making me like him. But he played for the Penguins AND the Capitals AND the Rangers, so I’ve hated him for such a long time. I’m still uneasy about the whole thing. I think I need to see a few games to warm up to it still.

I rarely love short term players for the Flyers. At the end of the day, that’s all he’ll be for the Flyers, a one year rental. The last time I loved a player who only played a short period in the organization would be Danny Markov.

At risk of inadvertently pissing off someone around here, I really can’t believe people buy those stupid knock-off jerseys. I don’t care so much about the money not going to the league/teams, they have plenty of money (well, some of them anyway…), but I do care about the money going to the assholes who make this crap.

all of the jerseys I buy are knockoffs. It’s been this way, since, probably my mother buying me a DBacks Curt Schilling jersey in, what was it, 2003?

I buy these kockoff jerseys for the following: they’re fun to drink in, fun to play sports in, fun to drink in, again. If a jersey costs too much I tend to praise it to the highest, I freak out when I’m wearing it around. I’m always worried about a stain that will get on it, and permanently mar the jersey and the investment I put into it. However, at 30-35 dollars a pop at these flea markets, these jerseys are inexpensive, but let me emphasize, they look real enough to the point where it passes my eye test, and anyone who doesn’t look close enough. To me, they are a tier above a replica jersey. I prefer stitched over replica any day of the week. But when the replica costs more than the knockoff itself, something is up.

So, I’ll continue to buy these knockoff jerseys because I’m satisfied with the product that they give me. Sure, my JVR looks like a pretty big knockoff, but hell, I can play street hockey in it, drink in it, potentially a questionable girl can wear it in the morning before she puts her clothes on and all I need to do is wash it, and it doesn’t put a dent in my wallet. I can buy 7-8 knockoff jerseys for 1 real jersey, and get more use out of the 7-8 jerseys

And btw, all of them aren’t knockoffs. My Bobby Clarke jersey is real, the logo it patched, same with the C, and I bought it at the flea market. Pardini can attest to this

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Aug 4, 2011 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

My Hextall jersey definitely shows its age. There are a few small stains (it’s a white jersey, after all), and the black of the logo is a little faded and the logo itself doesn’t quite lay flat anymore, but I love the hell out of it. I certainly wouldn’t wear it while playing hockey, but I did wear it all the time in high school and college. Now, I really only wear my jerseys when watching games. But I definitely hear you, replica jerseys aren’t cheap, so if you want to wear them for sports and drinking, a more affordable alternative makes sense. I dunno what it is though, I just seem to harbor some bitterness towards the people who make knockoffs of anything, and I don’t like my money going there. It’s just how I feel about it. Nothing against you at all, I understand your reasoning.

It just strikes me as dishonest. Making and selling something that isn’t what it claims to be. It’s not only taking someone else’s work and making your own carbon copy of it to undercut their prices, it’s doing so under the claim that what you’re selling is the real thing. It’s the claim that something is genuine when it isn’t that really gets to me. Do your own work, don’t rip off someone else.

This reads to me as a weird argument only because if you switch what the product is then it could be taken as the same as buying generic medicine or store brand food. They even advertise “compare the active ingredients” on generic medicine and store brand foods are knock off’s of brand name ones. So where is the line going to be drawn here?

I’m not questioning this 100% seriously, more of the devil’s advocate.

by Val_d'Or on Aug 5, 2011 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Excellent point. But while the store brand items do sometimes say “compare to…”, they still have their own brand name on them. I’m talking about something that is fake but is packaged, labeled, has the brand marks, etc of the real thing.

Still, excellent point. It definitely is a fuzzy area.

As someone who has a hard time shelling out for a jersey, I can understand why people will buy the good knockoffs, but I can’t fathom why people buy the really cheap looking ones.

None of the jerseys I have are knockoffs (although my Richie jersey doesn’t look very real because it’s one of the really low end kids models, but it’s an official reebok jersey bought at a legit location); but it is a serious reach for me to afford a jersey at full price. Then I tend to revere the heck out of them, even though only two out of five were even purchased at anything close to retail value. Plus the last one I paid full price for was defective, which really irked me because they wouldn’t take it back (since it was customized) and I had to fix it. NHL.com is still kind of on my bad side for that one.

Yeah, they are super expensive, it sucks. That’s why I only have two which were purchased ~15 years apart. I want one of the current orange ones so bad, but I already have two and don’t have much opportunity to wear them, so I just can’t justify it.

NHL.com has the crappiest jersey’s ever. Especially for the price. I got a Richards one and my friend got me a Hextall one from some shop in NJ and it’s a legit one she paid the same as my replica Richards which doesn’t even have sewn on numbers, nameplate or crest. It’s a literal piece of shit. The numbers are almost plastic feeling.

I can spot them from across the arena, if you know what to look for, it hardly takes a close look. If you don’t care, more power to you, but don’t kid yourself that it isn’t obvious. Though i will say I’m horribly disappointed in the quality of the replica jerseys since RBK Edge jerseys came out.

For the new replicas, I honestly have no clue. They are very poorly done compared to the replica jerseys before the switch to RBK. you know you’d be surprised. I’m not that much of a bar goer since I got back from school. Last weekend was the first time I went to a bar since I’ve been home. Some drunk blond chick commented on my Jagr shirt, which I’m going to back on as my “how I will end up marrying an 8 whose become a 6 because she realizes that hot guys don’t want damaged goods and her body ain’t getting any younger”

How much do game worn jerseys run you? Also, I plan on paying full price for an authentic 2014 Winter Olympics Team USA JVR jersey when I get the chance, and I’d pay full retail for a 1980s Team USA Hockey jersey

I guess it comes down to the fact that I haven’t found a hockey jersey yet that pleads out to me “Please drop, exorbitant amounts of cash on me, you’ll be happy with yourself”

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Aug 4, 2011 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Depends on the jersey (NHL, AHL, juniors, college, Olympics, WC’s, etc), player, and the source. I try not to pay for much anymore, I mostly will try to trade. I’ve gotten game worn jerseys for $50, but they’ve also been obscure country jerseys from lower level international tournies (like Estonia). I’ve never personally paid over $375 for any game worn jersey outside of charity events (only have 2 jerseys from charity events, no not Flyers charity events, and neither are very valuable, I was making a donation more so than buying a jersey), and I have, what I consider to be, some really good players. I usually try to get players who I think will become great that aren’t on the hype machine yet or don’t command a high price yet. If they flame out, I usually try to trade them for players I love for some inexplicable reason that aren’t very valuable either.

It’s amazing how few GMs seem to be even considering the impact of a new CBA. I think it’s going to be owner vs owner this time more than players vs owners (at least in my opinion). Yzerman and Stamkos said that they didn’t want to even discuss anything longer than 5 years because of the uncertainty, but that’s the only time I’ve heard a GM say they were even giving it any thought.

by DragonGirl0583 on Aug 4, 2011 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I can see it, honestly.

If you wait until after the season, there’s no incentive for him to sign with you before July 1; while the new CBA could change things somewhat, all of our history tells us that high-scoring forwards who hit UFA get long, expensive deals.

Sharp has incentive to sign now because it removes his risk that injury or poor performance this year would markedly cut into his windfall. He has incentive to sign now because it removes the uncertainty and family tension that comes from not knowing where you will live and work next year. He has much less incentive to sign on June 30, and so his price likely goes up measurably over the course of the season (barring the aforementioned injury or poor performance).

Yes, that is balanced against the risk that a new CBA will change the market. But if they wanted to keep him, signing him now is reasonable.

And if I’m Sharp, knowing what kind of term players are getting, there’s no way I sign a 2-3 year deal that puts me at UFA at 33; this may be the last chance for a big payday and it has to extend for as many years as you can get. As a UFA, he could easily get 5-6, so he can’t ink a contract now that covers fewer than four, IMO.

by Eric T. on Aug 4, 2011 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not saying this isn’t a great deal for Sharp. I’m saying if I’m Chicago, I don’t offer that contract. Too much money, too soon, not enough certainty.

If that means Sharp is on a new team next year, so be it.

by Geoff Detweiler on Aug 4, 2011 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, my argument is definitely rooted in the assumption that Chicago wants to keep him.

If they’re prepared to let him walk as a UFA, then the incentive to do this now is much smaller. But if he’s important to their plans for the next couple of years, I think waiting until next year to sign him leaves them with a big risk of either not getting him or paying more than they did in the UFA auction.

I’m not sure whether I’d have signed him, but I don’t think it’s a terrible move.

I never said it was terrible. But if a 27 year old Parise only gets one year at $6 million, how does a 31 year old Sharp get five years at $5.9 million?

Seriously? After I get all the chapters on RFAs/UFAs posted, you don’t know?

He’s 27 today, but back on June 30th he was still 26. He had to be an RFA, since only RFAs are eligible for arbitration. If they had made it to a hearing, he would only have been eligible for a one year deal, and by the time they settled both sides had probably starting working on their 40 pages briefs of evidence to submit, and I’d expect that a one year deal is easier to do quickly than a multi year contract.

So Sharpie got a multi-year extension under amicable circumstances with no negotiating deadline, and Parise got a “lets just sign something so we don’t have to go through that nasty hearing” one-year deal. To me, those situations aren’t comparable.

(And a PS from way above, the 2005 CBA doesn’t expire until September 15th 2012, so the new one might not be ratified by July 1st when the next round of free agency begins)

Random CBA FAQ note...

Sorry about the delay between chapters for the people who care, but I’m having a ridiculously hard time with the current topic. I’m trying to tackle minor league contracts, but I have to do it without any quotes so I’m having trouble getting it clear and understandable. They charge you to download the AHL CBA, but the document is so short that I can’t even quote one or two sentences without treading into dangerous territory over fair use.

If its a matter of copyright and fair use I might be able to get you some help. I have a lawyer buddy that specailized in that in college.

My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.

I know a pretty good amount about fair use. The basic problem is that you can’t quote so much text or information from a source that it devalues the document. Given the amount they charge for the download and the actual number of words contained, I would hit that “devalue” threshold really fast. I can however provide commentary on it; I’m just trying really hard to make sure it’s clear enough for everyone to understand.

Just wanted to say I loved the update on Ryan Potulny. It’s good to see a hometown boy making a run at the show ( not a lot of them come from around here haha) I was pretty excited when the flyers drafted him, as he played high school hockey with my brother, but I wish he would have been able to take advantage of the shot he had. I think the lineup at that time was a pretty tough one to crack though, especially for a 18 or 19 year old.

Good to see he’s improving and having success pretty much wherever he goes though, and adding a calder to the resume is only gonna make it that much better. The only disappointment for me was that he didn’t win playoff MVP last year. I know Lehner was good when he came in but holy he wasn’t even the starting goalie in the first 4 games of round 1. 26pts in 23 games including 14 goals and several game winners cannot/should not be that overlooked.

If Doughty gets $7M or so

That makes the Carter and Richards trades look even worse (some of you thought it was impossible to be worse).

But it also might mean more warfare on the CBA. Don Fehr has been surprisingly out of public view. As all long-time MLB fans know, that’s not necessarily good news. But as DG notes above, given the owner restlessness, you could have a weird multi-opponent war: NHLPA, Bettman, and owners vs. owners.

Yuck.

Hunter Pence will not guarantee a WS, but, then, neither does Carlos Beltran.

How does Doughty signing a big ass contract at all affect the Carts and Richy trades? I’m not saying you’re wrong but I guess I just don’t see what line you’re taking here.

My only guess is that he was referring to them being elite-level players at lower-than-market-value cap hits, but yet was one supposedly a cap casualty? I have no idea if that’s what he really meant but it’s all I’ve got.

Sorry, not on the blog that often (I’m spending way too much time on TGP as it is, as the .sig suggests). DG’s point is closest, but even that doesn’t quite get it.

If Doughty is getting $7M, then we can expect that all long-term deals are going up in price. Using a baseball term, Carter’s WAR/Salary would be significantly better than it would be prior to a >$7M award for both Doughty and Weber, even assuming that Doughty and Weber are much better players than Carter (the opposite extreme is Leino, whose WAR/Salary is awful). These awards would drive up the long-term market, making the original Carter and Richards contracts look brilliant, and the trades look less so.

If I didn’t make this clear, then you really did not understand the Fehr comment. That is, if the AAV would appear to be going up drastically for elite players, then small market teams will be very upset, obviously, but this also complicates the relationship between owners as well as players. That is, small market teams will be clamoring for more space between the floor and the cap, while large market teams will be happy with a continuing small growth glide path (up) of the cap. However, practically, if the AAV of elite players goes up, that means the small market teams would be able to sign fewer of these, given the greater distance between floor and cap. This potentially destroys competitive balance, which of course is the point of the cap. With Don Fehr around, who is likely to be pushing for MORE player salaries and rights (and thus potentially siding implicitly with the large market teams), this creates multi-front and multi-sided wars for the next CBA.

Hope this clears up confusion.
