I’m on board for Hartnell wearing the ‘A’. He has the personality and the experience. I expect Pronger to wear the ‘C’ and assume Briere gets the other ‘A’. Kimmo is the man on so many levels and the biggest reason is because of his off the radar awesome. Let Kimmo stay out of the spot and give it to a guy some of the younger guys around here can look to for leadership. Not sure if Briere bridges gap between factions and none of the younger/newer guys are even gonna get close to asking Pronger for anything. Hartnell seems as if he can play the role of Hegemon in this locker room.

I like him for off-ice leadership, but dealing with refs I can’t think he’d be great.

When he lead the team in penalties last year, including a fair number of majors and misconducts, no I don’t the refs will. That’s not the guy you want to have going to the ref to try to get an explanation for the call.

I don’t see why the younger guys would go to Hartnell over going to Timonen; if you want to appeal to the younger crowd, I’d think you’d be looking to pick someone even younger. I don’t see why Hartnell needs an A to be a leader in the room, and I’m with Ben in not seeing him as a guy who is going to curry favor with the refs. We complain all the time about Briere’s stickwork penalties, so why are we going to give another letter to a guy who had 60% more penalty minutes than Briere? Given the on-ice role of the A, I’d rather it be Timonen out of the two. If there’s a younger 3rd option, that’s fine, but I don’t think Hartnell is a smart move.

First off happy birthday to Justin. Next I would give the A to Danny Briere and Kimmo Timonen. I see it as the reason you give these guys the letters is because they have the ability to lead players. Everyone agrees that these three have that ability. Well part of the ability to lead is being able bridge the gap between you and another player not matter what the age difference. I don’t think we are talking about that drastic of an age gap here. I mean ok 16 or 17 years which would be around the gap between Pronger and Schenn seems like it could be a lot. In my opinion, however, I think the reason that Pronger or Timonen are great leaders is because they can still relate to younger players and are outgoing enough to be able to share their personal experiences and be able to guide them through the tough times. If for some reason one of Briere or Timonen was reluctant to take the A then I would give strong consideration to Jagr.
And Pronger has won before. Not just once, but several times. That alone should be enough to garner respect (that is if they do not already fear the elbows). I would not consider giving Jagr the ‘A’ though. Hartnell and Briere have been here longer and will have a better feel for the dynamic of the team.

Jagr….Jagr, Did you read the article about Jagr? He already is running from any responsibility other then hanging around at the casinos. Believe it or not the dynamic in a locker room 10 years difference in age and experience is like child to parent in real life. Pronger comes off to me as a stoic somewhat heavy handed type leader. Which I really like about him but is also why I think a couple lighter hearted guys as assistants might ease the transition of Pronger to the team. Being a captain is more complex then just being able to talk to a referee about a bad penalty. Team rules, social items, grievances, etc. go through captains if everything is working right.
Commenter formerly known as M from Pdaddy, but still just Call Me "M"!
Say what you want about Jagr but he has been a captian. It would not be my first choice and I do understand what you are saying but giving an A to a guy who has won everything there is to win and has seen everything there is to see isn’t the worst thing that can happen. You complain about articles and what was written about Carter and Richards and what they did off ice but now you do the same with Jagr and camp has not even started.
I was never critical of anything Carter and Richards did away from the ice. Just Carter on the ice. Young rich guys are going to go out and drink and it really has no effect on their performance.

Some reason I came away with:

I just went back and read it again. Yes, I see that he was later than some others arriving because he was busy with GM duties, and I am a little worried that it might become a distraction for him. And I see the comments about low expectations and less pressure, but as was said in that thread, I think the reporter asked him about low expectations and Jagr is just giving the “right” answer to that question. I don’t see anything about splitsville is we’re not winning. Upon further reflection, I actually saw very little of substance in the interview at all. I guess we just read it differently. :-p

I may not have written it as clearly as I should have in the above post but he had complained in the past about writers saying what Richards and Carter and their habits off ice.
Yea I did and it was way over blown. Jagr not being on time and having other interests and a seemingly lighthearted attitude about pressures and expectations is an issue for me because this a total long shot and seems to be getting longer. What Carter and richards were involved in is nothing new, of no concern nor matters in reference to the team on the ice. Thank god there wasn’t an over exposing media in the old days because trust me it was way worse.

Gioux needs a letter along with Briere and Kimmo and maybe JVR they like to rotate the A’s anyway so it is between 4 guys but Giroux should definitely be one of them to bridge the gap between the older guys and all the young newcomers.
You know the author makes a good point for not rotating. Leadership and roles need to be established, which I entirely agree with, right from the start. No bullshitting around.

I am pretty sure the leadership group is still going to 5 or 6 guys in the locker room and have all those guys wear the A only strengths the group as a whole. Pronger wears the C and one vet Briere or Kimmo with one young guy JVR and Giroux wear the A each game split between home and away.
How much more could one be disappointed. I live on disappointment.

I think they could do something like that but I don’t like it. I think the veteran leaders on this team are outstanding and I don’t think there is a need to have anymore than 3 players with letters on the team.
I have another question that I think needs to be asked. What the hell kind of bicycle was Homer riding. I raced motocross for 5 years competitvely and still ride and have been for over 20 years. I have taken massive crashes, have been run over multiple times on holeshots, have been landed on, and have even come up short on a 75 foot triple and never have had the injuries that Homer got falling on a bicycle. Yea I broke my wrist, colarbone, ribs, and suffered multiple concusions but never all in the same crash. What was this guy doing and did he get run over by a car?
How about following the Vancouver example, and giving an “A” to Bryzgalov?
But seriously, I think Pronger is a given for captain. After that, Kimmo as an assistant seems like a no-brainer. Among the forwards … yeah, G seems like a better choice than even Briere. But then I always chose my captains based on things that some people didn’t like – like heart and will, not ability.
Maxime Talbot - in the Orange and Black ... better than chocolate and peanut butter!
by MaximumTalbot on Sep 16, 2011 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions
See, it all depends on what you want the actual role of the captain and alternates to be. Technically, the only distinction of the captain is that he is supposed to be the one to talk to the officials, so that the officials don’t have to deal with everybody on both benches trying to talk to them at once. Keeps things manageable. There is nothing in the captain’s job description that says anything about on-ice or locker-room leader, but we (the fans and media) often perceive it that way, since there are plenty of instances when it is true. So handing out C’s and A’s to veterans on the basis of experience and perceived leadership ability would make sense if they are going to be the team’s on-ice and locker-room leader, but that’s not necessarily what they are going to be. Hence all the argument last year over whether or not Richards should be the captain when it looked from the outside like Pronger was the leader. It doesn’t matter if Pronger or Richards or someone else entirely is the leader. The captain is the guy who talks to the refs. And IMO Richards’ personality fit that role better than Pronger.
The point of all that longwinded exposition (sorry) was that I’m not sure liaison to the refs is something you want Briere to do, given his history of cheap shots and suspensions. He seems too easy to get under his skin. I don’t see him keeping his cool with the refs and having any sway with them. But that’s just me.

I never wanted Briere to be the captian I have always wanted Pronger. I was in favor of Briere for an A. I do think the guy wearing the C should and is more than just someone who talks to the refs. On the ice yes that is one of his purposes but it stretches much further than that IMO.

I do see what you are saying as far as cheap shots but I don’t think Briere has an awful rep as far as being cheap. Yes he is no angel but do you think he has that bad of a rep?
It’s not so much reputation as how I think some of his past behavior reflects on his personality and ability to calmly and professionally work with the refs when they are going to very often make (or miss) calls that you don’t like. Yes, I’m really stressing the rapport with the refs aspect, I think it’s important and it’s not easy in an adrenaline-filled sport like hockey.

I guess I should note I don’t have much to go on as far as their personalities, since I’ve never met any of the players. But from interviews and how they act on-ice you can gather some clues about how they might handle that situation.

oh you don’t have to tell me that was why I never had any letter or was ever even considered on any of the teams I played on. I was vocal in locker rooms and very good at getting guys motivated ect. But I was way to fired up on the ice or floor to be able to talk to a ref let alone if it was a penalty against my team.

I’ll blockquote since you didn’t read it… :-p From the article on Luongo:
On September 30, 2008, prior to the start of the 2008–09 season, Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis and head coach Alain Vigneault named Luongo the 12th captain in team history, replacing the departed Markus Näslund. The decision was unconventional, as league rules forbid goaltenders from being captains. As such, Luongo became only the seventh goaltender in NHL history to be named a captain, and the first since Bill Durnan captained the Montreal Canadiens in 1947–48 (after whom the league implemented the rule). In order to account for the league rule, Luongo did not perform any of the on-ice duties reserved for captains and did not wear the captain’s “C” on his jersey. During his first season as captain, he had a small “C” painted on the chin of his mask. Canucks defenceman Willie Mitchell was designated to handle communications with on-ice officials, while defenceman Mattias Öhlund was responsible for ceremonial faceoffs and other such formalities associated with captaincy.
For all intents and purposes, he wasn’t really captain.

Question for the board: Is there a limit to the amount of “slide” contracts a team can have? I know Noebels has one already but could the flyers also sign Couturier and Hyka as well if they wanted and let them play in juniors?
No, I don’t believe there is a documented limit, Minnesota has 4 slide-eligible contracts. http://www.capgeek.com/reserve_lists.php?team_id=18&year_id=2011
But you don’t want to sign a huge number of them, because you have to have room on the 50 man list for them when you can no longer slide the contract or when you think they’re ready for the NHL. So if you sign a whole bunch of a slide eligible contracts, you should be giving some long-term thought to them.
Hyka could be slid for 2 years if he doesn’t play 10 games in the NHL, because he’s 18. But Noebels and Couturier can only be slid this year because they’re 19 by major junior’s rules; so next year (2012-13) there has to be room for them under the 50 man limit.

The Columbus deal
I commented on this yesterday, but I just read The Cannon piece on it. It still does not make sense to me. Note: whenever it seems like money is being “pulled out of a hat or thin air” be very wary. (See: mortgage-backed securities, credit default swaps, etc.)
And what It reminds me of is when Ted Turner got his cable network and the Braves and the Thrashers all confused into Time Warner and Liberty Media. Ownership became complicated and bureaucratized/corporatized. Eventually, this unwieldy relationship prompted the sale of the Thrashers team to Spirit, and we know the unhappy history from there.
(Note: while the Flyers’ ownership is corporate, it is primarily one company running the show).
The Cannon is praising this. Godspeed to them.
