Philadelphia Flyers cut 15 junior players from Training Camp
Cuts!
The first round of cuts were made on Monday from Philadelphia Flyers training camp and, well, no surprises. A bunch of junior-level players, including promising invitee Tomas Hyka, 2011 draft picks Nick Cousins, Derek Mathers Colin Suellentrop and Marcel Noebels, and 2010 pick Brendan Ranford have all been returned to their junior clubs.
The cuts also mean that just three non-roster invitees remain in camp: Michael Nylander, Adam Mair and Garrett Roe, a small forward out of St. Cloud State.
The full list of cuts: Etienne Boutet, Ricard Blidstrand, Shayne Campbell, Nick Cousins, Campbell Elyniuk, Austin Fyten, Sam Grist, Simon Gronvaldt, Michael Houser, Tomas Hyka, Derek Mathers, Jonathan Narbonne, Marcel Noebels, Brendan Ranford, Colin Suellentrop.
55 players are left in camp. Notables that made it through this round of cuts: Sean Couturier, Brandon Manning (the only junior-level defenseman remaining), Jason Akeson (same deal) and Roe, who clearly must have done something right to avoid the first cuts.
Here's the link to our running roster, which has been updated with the cuts.

I was too busy laughing at the Devils to remove Lehtivuori, apparently.

What did the Devils do? (I do so love the Devils imploding in horrifying ways.)
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
Last season was just funny.

Clarification
So, these players were returned to their Junior team but to they remain property of the Flyers? What about someone like Tomas Hyka who was an invitee? He is now back to being a “free agent?”

Those who came in as invitees/free agents go back to being free agents; those who are flyers draft picks but don’t have contracts go back to juniors but we still hold their rights. Hyka is an interesting case, because I’m not entirely sure we were allowed to offer him a contract, but I’d need to look into it more. He was drafted in the CHL import draft though and will play in the Q, so he should go back to being an undrafted junior player and re-enter the NHL draft pool next year.

Hmmm, seems like a shame to let Hyka slip away.

Agreed; but the rules for signing an undrafted free agent allow a window of opportunity for signing players under 20 who played in North America the previous year, but no such opportunity for European players under 22. I’m not sure if there’s another loophole somewhere else, since those are the qualifications to be eligible to play in the NHL. I haven’t done a complete search though.
But that doesn’t preclude them from putting a priority on snagging him in the next draft; depending on how he does this year, and if they have a pick in the right round.
