Re: Homer and Walker
Does sound pretty cheesy. To his credit, Walker said “it was fine, nothing everyone didn’t know” or something. God bless him, he seems to have done everything he can to rejuvenate his career. Hope it works out for him, but with that salary it may have to be elsewhere.
Is there any way he can fit into the roster? Maybe if a Phantoms player replaces Nodl? I think that out of Walker, Lilja, and Bartulis, Walker is our best bet, while some players like Akeson, Couturier, or Read could be a good swap for Nodl.
Bullies, Phightins, and Vickerbockers
So you want to replace one of our heaviest lifters from last year who also scored at an NHL-ready level and has a next to nothing cap hit for an unknown, so you can play Walker and his 1.7m cap hit for a stay-at-home D man coming off a season of 2 bum legs?
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
This was basically spitballing, I don’t think Nodl is exactly a key-cog for us though
Bullies, Phightins, and Vickerbockers
I think you will find a LOT of Nodl support around here. Key Cog? No, he’s a roleplayer first and formost with a good upside.
The other issue is there is no bonus cushion this year. Matt Read and Jason Akeson actually both have a HIGHER cap hit than Nodl by about 50k. And as nice as it is to think of young guys in the system breaking out, Nodl is by this point established as competent in what he’s needed for at a rediculously low price.
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
He’s only key because he’s one of two effective defensive wingers left on the team, and he’s pretty cheap. He’s essentially replaceable, but I don’t think the Flyers have the talent in their system or the cap room to replace him.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
He’s definitely replaceable, except the Flyers currently have nobody who can replace him.

I demand you backup this statement with stats…. and possibly a graph.
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
He’s replaceable in the sense that he had a negative CorsiRel, an unsustainably high on-ice save percentage, and top-6 teammates.
But the Flyers don’t have anybody who can face first-line opposition, with terrible zone starts, and still finish in the offensive zone over 51% of the time.
Or read why he deserves to be on the third line because he’s immensely better than Max Talbot.

Oh, he better end up on the third line….
I like Talbot as a move through lines kinda guy with injuries but I don’t want Nodle wasted on the 4th line when Talbot is a perfectly good energy guy.
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
re Talbot
Hear, hear! Talbot is a 4th liner, and should be a good one. They want him to be the next Lappy. I do too. I hope he can.

Poor Nodl gets no respect. This guy did a lot for this team last year, not the stuff that shows up on a score sheet. He went up against some of the best competition last season on the team and held his own. He is young and developing, he could turn into a solid two-way player which is something all teams need. Let Cooter develop he is not ready IMO for the NHL. I think we find this out this week or next.
I think that out of Walker, Lilja, and Bartulis, Walker is our best bet
I don’t think there is much evidence to support this to be honest. Basically, it comes down to two issues: which one of Walker, Lilja or Bartulis plays the best on that third like pairing with Meszaros (obviously). Honestly, I don’t think it matters all that much because all three are similar in that they below average players. The Flyers will get pretty much the same thing out of all of them. So, it then comes down to finances. Bartulis would be the best bet because his cap hit is the least (and give the Flyers some more wiggle room) but Lilja signed a 35+ contract so it doesn’t matter if they stash him in ADK because his contract will count against the cap, one way or another. So, like always, the Flyers have backed themselves into a corner and have given themselves leway with their 6th defensemen.
while some players like Akeson, Couturier, or Read could be a good swap for Nodl.Absolutely not. I know you don’t think so but Nodl is actually a “key-cog” for the Flyers. Not sure why people don’t give Nodl credit because he is very solid defensively. With Richards and Carter gone, Nodl will be relied on quite heavily on the “shut down” third line and the penalty kill. And as 02h32m01s said, Nodl has a dirt cheap cap hit. There is absolutely no reason for him not to be a Flyer all season, especially not at the expense of some unproven AHL guy or Couturier (who MUST spend, at least, the next two years playing in Juniors and the AHL before being considered a serious threat to make the Flyers. Don’t forget, he is 18!). Nodl will be an important part of the Flyers this year, even more so if he is playing with Schenn who will need Nodl and Simmonds to compensate for his inexperience as he grows into being an everyday NHL center AND having the assignment of shutting down the other team’s top line.

Hey, I love Gagne; but I think one of the biggest reasons he was able to come back and be effective was the fact that he stayed out so long and let himself heal. He was smart to wait as long as he had to, and that allowed him to have a productive year the next season.
As much as I hate Crosby, it’s still best for the league if he gets better and returns to his old form (or something very close), no matter how long it takes.

I think what excites people is that the Flyers are such an unproven entity right now. Because the fans don’t know what this new team can do, they fantasize and get excited that, for pretty illogical reasons, this team NOW has what it takes to win the Cup. Well we knew Homer got fleeced by Yzerman on that trade, but I’m still surprised that he admitted it that bluntly. That definitely isn’t going to win over any of his critics.

Exactly why I drew attention to it.

Homer isn’t going to win over any of his critics; Homer knows this; Homer doesn’t care.
Furthermore, he has one or two transactions to make in the next three weeks likely to draw even more criticism.

Happy Birthday, Bob!
Bob turns 23 today and in honor of the occasion, the following is a list of things Bob plans to do today:
10. Steak and dumplings – all day long!
9. Read “The Brothers Karamazov” in English. Oh, better make that “Green Eggs and Ham”.
8. Play Angry Birds. Death to the Pigs!
7. Practice the two most important responses to Philly media:
“I will not risk answering your question.”
“Bob”.
6. Drive everyone crazy with that Russian Techno music.
5. Buy clothes for Pinocchio (er, Panotch) to critique.
4. Take a spin in his Lexus on those nice Jersey roads.
3. Teach Brzy the fine art of skipping rope. Watch him break his ankle and laugh.
2. Enjoy playing hockey again in the Orange & Black.
And the number one thing Bob will do today is:
Meet Olga in Toronto…oh, that was last year
Bring Olga along to Toronto!
Have a great birthday and blow them Leafs away!
If Brzy doesn't do right by Bob I'll kick his $51 million ass across the WFC.
As per Dave Isaac, no Briere, Bryz or Leighton in Toronto tonight.

Blew through MSP last night. Great work by everyone. Hopefully, my dad reads his, too, so I can stop explaining about why I talk about ESS%, zone starts, and competition.
But most importantly, I now know where Eric played his college ultimate.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
I…erm…hmm…
I still don’t have my MSP (freaking post office), so I don’t know what it says, but I didn’t expect it to mention that.

I found my current job on LinkedIn and at least a half-dozen times recruiters have seen my profile and contacted me to ask if I’m interested in an open position.
I dunno if it’s useful in all fields, but it is in the tech world.

Flyers @ Leafs on NHL Network tonight?
Yo fellas,
Can anyone confirm that the Flyers/Leafs pre-season game tonight will be televised on the NHL Network?
According the NHL website, NHL Network is airing it. However, I wanted to check if anyone knew for sure; if any friendly BSH visitors who are home today with little to do could confirm whether or not their digital cable box says “NHL Hockey: Philadelphia Flyers at Toronto Maple Leafs” at 7pm tonight.
I hope it’s on… I need an ice hockey fix, STAT.
If you look upthread a little bit, it was mentioned. I don’t have NHLN so I can’t check, but others were talking about it. Unless you’ll be affected by blackouts. It’s also on Comcast Network.

thanks, guys
sweet, thanks Trav and LeepinLIzardz. I should have read the thread first, but I’m lazy.
I’m not sure if the channel I have is the NHL Network or another NHL channel, but I assume it’s NHL Network. It’s channel #579 on Verizon Fios, and they’ve been airing NHL playoff replays all summer, and usually show a ton of “NHL on the Fly” in season).
I’m really pumped to watch this pre-season game tonight, and that’s pretty pathetic. The Phillies have it all wrapped up until the postseason starts so they’re a snore to watch for the time being; the Eagles won’t be able to entertain me until Sunday; and my heavy use of EA’s new NHL 2012 has me craving ice hockey like a damned junky.
Let’s go Flyers.
Just bought NHL Center Ice
Can anyone confirm if it’s in HD on Time Warner Cable???
Granted, I’d buy it if it were in black and white, but I’d be much happier with HD.

Yea that’s from the NHL. On Comcast every game is SD, I’m wondering if TW is different.
Broad Street Hockey's Reigning Trivia Champion
that looks like a negative ghostrider. I’m looking at California’s TW and their center ice is SD

HD/SD varies by market and by feed provider
Center Ice gets feeds from each team. Some teams provide both SD & HD each game. Sometimes you get only SD. Comcast Philly almost NEVER provides an HD feed for Center Ice. Not so for Comcast in San Jose for example, where there’s usually an HD feed. At least, I find this to be true for my DirecTV service.
YMMV and check local listings :-)

Our service might isn’t necessarily similar, between DirecTV and Time-Warner cable. Packages could be totally different. Perhaps some of the regional sports networks, like the Fox Sports franchises.

Holmgren's "not knowing"
What’s troublesome to me is that this is the second player in the organization that in the last few days Holmgren’s gone on the record as admitting he nothing about.
A few days ago he said he didn’t know anything about a college UFA the team had signed in May who looked impressive in the rookie camp, …and I thought that was troubling.
Now, we have a veteran player with a substantial NHL history, and multimillion dollar contract that Holmgren traded for almost a year and a half ago, …and Holmgren’s telling him he doesn’t know anything about him…
I’m sorry, but imho there shouldn’t be a player in the organization that the General Manager doesn’t know EVERYTHING about.
It reminds me of some the statements Clarkie was making shortly before he resigned, …it’s just not right.
Homer didn’t trade for him per say, he let Yzerman & Gagne’s agent dictate the terms of the trade. Per John Boruk last year:
Still, Gagne wanted some control over the situation and he, along with his agent Bob Sauve, got involved to find a trade that would be in their best interest. (In case you’re wondering, the Lightning actually facilitated this deal.)It’s stupid for Homer to admit that he knew nothing about him, but it’s probably the truth. By the time the Gagne trade went down, Homer didn’t have a lot of options left to get Gagne shipped out.

And yet people wanted to rationalize the trade by saying it was Gagne’s lack of value and Homer got what he could.
Except Yzerman got what he wanted.

So I was reading USA Today's Hockey Overview ...
and some person with the last name Allen thinks we’ll finish 7th in the east. Caps will take it, and Pens 6th.
We weren’t the favorite becase of all the ‘changes’, Their stroyline read: Flyers fix goalie problem, then sign Jaromir Jagr.
Deceptively Delicious...
I wouldn’t put that out of the question. Then again I think other than the Southeast theres a lot of shakeup in the east right now.
Buffalo could move up a lot and challenege both Montreal and Boston for the division, and those 3 teams could easily be in the top 8.
Caps will take the south almost certainly, they had a great offseason I think. Tampa Bay is almost a lock for the playoffs as well. Carolina might even challenge for real this year.
Then theres our division, where even with injuries to half their stars the Penguins find a way to win, everyone suddenly thinking the Rangers can compete, Us looking vulnerable, and New Jersey not having imploded again yet…..
The East is a lot less of a lock for everyone but the Caps this year.
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
Agreed, the prediction isn’t unreasonable. But the narrative is horrible.
