Is it good to compare a 9 year, 51 million contract guy to someone on a 2 year, under one million contract? I mean… couldn’t we just keep Boosh? And the money? And an unrestricted contract that will choke the life out of our team and ruin everything?!
Oh no I’m panicking again…
It's in his wheelhouse!!
Carlos Ruiz, My Nickname is Chooch.
I think Geoff meant the way they look. They wear exactly the same pads and have the same number. The only easy way to tell the difference is by the helmet and stick (Boosh used a Swagger).
Mourning Gagne forever.
I noticed it to actually… the pads and the helmet look similar to Boosh’s old fighter pilot helmet from a distance. They really do look similar.
But, uh… Boosh wore #33… Bryz wears #30.
Right.

the number really is inconsequential here. The similarity is in their playstyles

Oh, I thought the similarity was in how quick the fans were to blame him for some of the bad luck goals, like that one that was a last second deflection.

Ugh – was still hoping Umberger might become a Flyer again, but the extension Umberger signs probably nixes that happening anytime in the next five years. He may be just a Blue Jacket, but he’s a filthy-rich Blue Jacket now.
Lifelong Tennessean, Flyers' fan for life
Well, they already took a long contract with Carter…maybe trade Bryz in a few years when Bob becomes the stud of the league.
you mean right now? After seeing their last two games, it is supremely obvious that Bobrovsky is our stud goalie

That or we just start calling the blue jackets “Flyers Central.”
What with Flyers West becoming even more Flyers-like this offseason.

on the bright side, regardless of how the Flyers spend the money, they are seemingly a competitive team for almost every single year. If they fail to win the Cup this year, it will shut up the “we need a multi-million dollar goaltender to be the best team” and if we win, well winning is pretty damned cool

maybe we can get Shelley to fake a season-ending injury and put him on LTIR. That way, the Flyers can keep Shelley’s locker room presence and get some wiggle room with his cap hit off the books for the year. Everybody hits woo hoo!

the fact that he saw his numbers on the back for a good 30 feet and still decided to hit him from behind is absurd. why is he wasting a spot? would much rather have someone like Rinaldo out there or Sestito although I think Rinaldo will be the one to take his spot. such a waste of space.

Don’t tell these guys the preseason is meaningless, especially after Claude Giroux made sure to get the puck from referee Kelly Sutherland so Hyka would have a souvenir.
This is awesome. There really isn’t a single bad thing you can say about Giroux. You see older guys doing that for kids, but rarely do you see somebody Giroux’s age having the presence of mind to make sure a kid gets that once in a lifetime trophy.
So long as that doesn’t convince FO that Giroux needs to be captain now.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.
One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

I don't see why people booed Bryz
First goal he had a shot at, but Meszaros and Giroux basically let the guy walk right in and shoot from point-blank range on a pretty shooter-friendly angle. You give an NHL player that wide open of a shot from that close, and there’s a good chance it’s going in. Second goal was a knuckle-ball that got deflected, can’t to blame Bryz on that one either. Third goal was a ridiculously lucky double-deflection. Nobody makes that save because it is un-saveable, there was no chance.
So basically he didn’t let in any “bad” goals, he had a defensive breakdown and some bad luck. And this is coming from someone who would’ve rather had Bobrovsky be the starter and never have gotten Bryzgalov.
Plus, it’s preseason, chill brah.
Bullies, Phightins, and Vickerbockers
I don’t think Bryzgalov’s performance was boo-worthy, but don’t you find it just a little bit funny that our newly acquired savior let in three goals when our former goalie of the future, now pine-riding commando, got a shutout the night before?
I lurk on Twitter as @LusipherPE
Oh i definitely acknowledge the hilarity of the situation, and I will probably still feel that what we had in Bobrovsky as a starter was good enough to make us a Cup-contender, especially given the huge contract we gave Bryz, but obviously there’s no way you can call Bryz a failure because he had bad luck in his first preseason game, on a new team, in a new conference, etc, etc.
Shit happens, i’m gonna wait a while before I start crucifying Bryz/Holmgren/Snider
#TeamBob
Bullies, Phightins, and Vickerbockers
people boo bryz because as knowledgeable about the game as hockey as they are, they are nothing more than subjective simpletons who can’t analyze situations objectively
I eat sentimentality for breakfast, but stats stop me dead in my tracks
by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Sep 22, 2011 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed. The people who will never get over the Richards/Carter trades enough to be excited about the new dynamic of the team are the same people who will jump all over Bryz for every goal he allows all year. Bryz ranks probably between the 6th-10th best goalies in the league, he’s not perfect though, and the whiny people who expect him to get a shutout every game are going to annoy us all year. Tis the nature of our fair city/
Bullies, Phightins, and Vickerbockers
I think people need to realize the crowd typically boo’s any time the away team scores in every city. Also, Philadelphia has never had any problem booing goalies. I wouldn’t associate any of these boo’s to Richards/Carter trades or really anything else as they are the norm here, Bryz will be no different.
You sir are a gentleman of four outs!
there’s definitely different boos. You have the generic disgust boo, and then the disdainful boo, where things get personal. I prefer the second boo, it’s much more intimate
I eat sentimentality for breakfast, but stats stop me dead in my tracks
by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Sep 22, 2011 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions
Haha obviously, but both have existed pre Bryz, these are not Bryz specific boo’s. You know me though, I’m all about intimacy.
You sir are a gentleman of four outs!
Well yeah but my point is that, regardless of the context of booing, there are going to be a lot of idiots who bitch every time Bryz lets in a goal because they don’t realize that he’s human and some goals aren’t gonna be his fault, which is irrational and annoying.
Bullies, Phightins, and Vickerbockers
So you mean it’s the exact same thing it has always been?
I mean I get the complaint, I have it too, but I’ve had it for a while now since it’s always happened with every goaltender that I’ve been alive to watch. If anything, at least now I can justify the bitching because they overspent the market on this one and paid a huge premium on only a small difference of wins (even though that’s probably not their thought process).
You sir are a gentleman of four outs!
OT
Don, you’re a beer guy, ever had Breckenridge Vanilla Porter? Or where I might find it?
I'm kind of a dick.
No I have not, though I do have a Breck Brewery shirt that my future in laws got me. By you, your best bet is Shangy’s, they’ll order anything. Also, Spinnerstown might be able to order it for you (John and Hal are pretty reasonable guys). But Shangy’s definitely should at least order it for you, I’d call there first.
You sir are a gentleman of four outs!
Actually I just checked their site, and they list their distributors. Stockertown Beverage has it apparently, or at least carries it. That’s about 20 minutes from you.
And if you want substitute suggestions, let me know.
You sir are a gentleman of four outs!
Wait a minute, Bryz is human? I thought Homer assured us he was gonna be an Ivan Drago-like machine, bred specifically for the task of goaltending. I feel duped…

Bear in mind that if either wins it we likely have to pay a bonus that counts against the cap/cap overage.
Bonus’ start the year against the cap and don’t go away till they can’t be met.
Thus if they win the Calder it doesn’t hurt us at all because we were paying for a Calder bonus all year anyway.

Yeah, I called and e-mailed enough times yesterday that they got the drop/add put through. Took a while for it to propagate through the system, but I can get to all the materials for the new class now. I’ve got 3 lectures (~2 hours each) to watch and two homework assignments to do to get caught up, but at least I’m back on track for graduation.

On Umberger's extension
According to capgeek, Umberger did NOT get much of a raise from a “salary” perspective. His salary was $4.5 in 2010-11. It goes up to $5M in 2011-12, but then back down to $4.5 for the next four years.
Relatively speaking, that’s a fairly team-friendly contract at his age, even if the Flyers could not afford it per se.
As I’ve posted, I have serious doubts about Columbus’ new ownership structure. But maybe they will start not being quite-so-terrible. Alternatively, maybe they’ll take some more of the Flyers contracts! (unless Snider is going to make that phone call to Bettman. ;-)).
Hunter Pence will not guarantee a WS, but, then, neither does Carlos Beltran.
On Couturier, from his point of view
“Wowee, I’m 18 years old, I can’t legally even drink yet in the US and I make over a million a year! Should I buy a Porsche or a Tesla? I could buy my mom a house! Mancave, here we come!”
FYI, for some reason, he doesn’t show up on capgeek yet. Is it not “official”?
Hunter Pence will not guarantee a WS, but, then, neither does Carlos Beltran.
They’ll get it up there when they have the info from Seravalli, I’m sure. But even though I emailed them, they didn’t delet Lehtivuori yet.

Check this out:

Puck Daddy is reporting a potentially leaked Winter Classic logo. If this is it, got to say, I love it. Along with it comes a very official looking promotional trailer for the Winter Classic in Philly this year.
When I was at the “Meet the Flyers” taping in Voorhees on Sunday, Peter Luukko joked about how the 2012 Winter Classic has been one of the worst kept secrets and if this logo is in fact the official one chosen by the league, it is amazing how all this information keeps getting leaked.
