Show your support for Wayne Simmonds!
By now, a majority of hockey fans know what happened in tonight's game between the Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings in London, Ontario, Canada. Some genius thought it would be a brilliant idea to throw a banana at him while he was on the ice.
Dustin Leed of The Hockey Guys thought it would be a good idea to have a collective location where people could leave a message for Wayne to show support.
Wayne, I am looking forward to see what you bring the Flyers. Your response, or lack thereof, to tonight only serves as evidence that you are a classy guy and definitely someone I can get behind.

I am so sorry for the hatred you had to endure tonight and have no doubt had to endure at various points in your career. Please know that this one fan is not representative of all or even of a majority of hockey fans.
Keep up the great work.

What JJ said
Even if you played a large part in tormenting my Stars the past few seasons.
Unfortunately, there are still idiots/bigots in the world today. Props to you for marginalizing the one in London tonight by ignoring his antics, no matter how much the temptation to respond might have been. And I’m not sure I would have blamed you if you did respond to him.
And know that the vast majority of us hockey fans see you as a hockey player first and foremost. In the spirit of what Martin Luther King intended, we will always judge you by the content of your character and not the color of your skin.

Thank you, Wayne for rising above and being the better man in a situation in which everyone would have understood if you had not. Rest assured, the actions of the bigot in the crowd are not an acceptable display by a hockey fan, nor by a human being. I only wish the idiot had the courage to face you like a man rather than hiding in the crowd and slinking back into the night like the coward he is.

I am sorry you had to run into someone so hateful. Sadly, there are others living in this world with the same world view and as a society, we are not past these issues. But don’t let hateful people get you down. Continue to do as you did tonight and rise above it all. Maybe this incident can get people around the world and those who were once ignorant can now begin to understand the issues of race in sports. Hopefully this starts conversations that need to happen.
Continue to stand up against this intolerance, Wayne, and I look forward to seeing you perform with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Wayne, You’re the man! Right when the trade happened, you became my favorite player and since preseason started, you have nothing to change that… You have only reassured it. Keep Up the good work. I have you on my fantasy team! I had to draft my favorite flyer.
Trade Carter. Bring back Gagne.
Wayne,
I’m sorry about what you had to endure tonight. That is simply ridiculous. I can’t believe someone would do something like that, but way to be the bigger person and stay classy (and even score) after that. Know that Sharks fans remain behind you 100%.

Wayne, you should never have to be treated this way, since your play on the ice is all that should matter. Philly will absolutely love you for what you bring to the team, and you’ve already earned our respect and appreciation. Kudos for handling such a negative act with class and maturity, but I can only hope it’s an issue you don’t have to deal with again.

The world has no place for acts like this. However, acting as you did is inspiring to everyone to keep a level head when faced with a personal slight against you. I wasn’t sure about you coming in, since you were traded for my favorite athlete, but count me as a fan now. Looking forward to what you can offer us this year and beyond.

Wayne, tonight you showed incredible class and dignity in the face of this small-minded, bigoted and ignorant act. No one should ever have to put up with this kind of act but you showed how it was possible to rise above it and be the bigger person – and in doing so you have inspired us all, regardless of where our team loyalties may lie.

This indefensible act is something that should never have happened; the fact that one so-called ‘fan’ would do something like this is a disgrace to all real hockey fans all over. Wayne you’ve been one of Philly’s true bright spots on the ice this preseason, and today you’ve proved to be a shining example of perseverance in the face of ignorance and bigotry. The modern world has no room for racism, and I sincerely hope this person is caught and brought to justice. There just is no rational basis for passing judgement on others without any form of evidence other than a superficial characteristic such as skin color. As a person of Caucasian decent I find this persons actions embarrassing, know that they in no way represent the sentiments of any meaningful number of us.
Keep playing your game Wayne, we love what you bring on, and now off the ice. Pure class.
Wayne,
You would think that living in the ‘00s that this “ish” wouldn’t happen. It’s just plain despicable; it’s downright dangerous. There is no room for this in any society. I applaud you and the way you handled yourself. Way to handle yourself with class and dignity despite some random racist and xenophobic jackass.
Wayne, I look forward to seeing you work hard to help the Flyers hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup this season. Keep up the hard work, you exemplify what it means to be a Philadelphia Flyer.

Wayne,
At no point is such behavior as was witnessed tonight ever okay. Such unbridled ignorance, intolerance, and above all idiocy, is for lack of a better word disgusting. The way you have carried yourself not only tonight, but throughout your young career, has proven that you are a fantastic ambassador for our great sport. Your professionalism and class are a wonderful reminder that we can all move beyond the disgrace of the events last night. Cannot wait to see you play for years to come, Wayne. Go Flyers.

I live in the Memphis area, in the South where racism at one time was rampant and in the city where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. Some of the most important people over the course of my life are African-Americans and I can tell you I am tired of the old racial stereotypes that continue to divide us to this day. I am truly sickened that Simmonds was the butt of somebody’s stupid race-based joke. We should make up our own minds about someone based on individual factors, not race. Simmonds skates up and down the ice with endless energy and checks every opponent in sight with thunderous hits. He is already one of my favorite players and the season hasn’t begun yet. I could care less about his skin color. He’s a Flyer now and that’s all that matters to me.

Darth Vader
When Simmonds was with the Kings and wore the all black King uniform, I once wrote “He highly resembles Darth Vader.” I advised him that he was living in LA (with my best old ex friend Ray), and he needed to invest in some sunblock.
But, I’ve always really enjoyed watching that guy play, and was clamoring for the Hawks to pick up either Simmonds of Joel Ward this year. They are both very good, intense working fowards that are a joy to watch. (although Wayne seemed to want to pick a fight with Brouwer all the time when they played against each other. That probably was the only time I wanted to see Darth get his ass kicked.)
Wayne, please know that assholes will be assholes – it’s a joy watching you compete and you serve as an inspiration to many kids, both white and black.
my son has a few black kids on his H.S. team. Last year, one of the mental midgets on the other team called one of them a “nigger” why they were shaking hands after the game. I told my son if that ever happens again you need to take action. Hockey is a team sport – you can’t let that type of comment go without a response. Hell, at least say something profound like “Joe mama.”
You’d like to think we’ve come a long way from the days of Jackie Robinson, one of the most amazing athletes, and greatest story in sports. And we have, in my opinion – certainly based on the many responses on this site. It seems like most of the people here know Wayne is indeed, “SOMETHING THE LORD MADE.”
"SOMEONE THE LORD MADE"
That is acurate and we are all equals! Thanks for being a Flyer Wayne and I hope to see you for many years to come making life on the other team hell. Can’t wait to see you get a Gordie Howe hat trick out there. Good luck on your first year as a member of the Orange and Black!!!
Something the Lord Made
is actually a fantastic movie that actually deals with similar isuues. I highly recommend it.

Wayne, you are a damn fine hockey player and a first-class individual. I’m sorry that someone in the Flyers “Home Away from Home” decided to do something so foul – but I am impressed with your courage. At any rate, I was thrilled to see a player of your caliber in Flyers orange, and I hope you stay with the team for a long time. Best of luck!
Good coming from bad
Wayne,
I hope that you can TRULY maintain the composure and class you have exuded off the ice during the tumult you will face in the next few days. While it was a banana, it might as well have been a lightning rod thrown at you, as everyone who has ever faced any type of racism will use and abuse this situation. In the grand scheme of things, this will pass, and your color and this incident will cease to be more than footnotes to what promises to be a wonderful relationship between yourself and the Flyer’s organization. We, as a family, support you and hope you can use this to propel yourself beyond the prejudice and into greatness. I certainly believe you have the skills, the mentality and the class to do so. Now, go out there and bleed orange for us! (Cause to us, that is the ONLY color that matters!)
Mike
the beauty of hurting a bigot
I didn’t hear about this until this morning and I’m f#ck&ng pissed.
I’d love to see some scumbag bigot try something like this at the WFC. Unlike Wayne, I wouldn’t have the class to ignore this, and I would probably shatter my knuckles punching this filthy rascist’s face. Ideally, some other fans would join in! Best case scenario, we would give the punk real, permanent physical damage — cripple him for life as a constant reminder that rascism and bigotry aren’t tolerated in today’s world.
Of course, my hypothetical anger-induced daydream of crippling a bigot would lead to stories beginning with, “Those Philly fans are at it again…”
I understand that my reaction would be “stooping to their level”, but I really don’t care to be the better man — I want rasicsts to pay the piper. It’s not like many normal people are “in between” on rascism, but I REALLY can’t tolerate it. I wish all bigots would die (or get slowly beaten to death) before they could procreate kids to raise as tomorrow’s punk-ass rascists. Hopefully, by the time my grandkids are born, rascism will be a thing of the past — something so removed and ridiculous that people of the future can’t grasp how it was ever so widespread and systemic.
Now that I’ve publicly vented and some time has passed, I feel a little better.
P.S. I said Tuesday night, after watching that first pre-season game, that Simmonds impressed me more than anyone on the ice. I knew he worked his tail off and that he was very physical, but I didn’t realize how fast he is or how good his hands are! He’s without a doubt the new Flyer I’m most excited to see this year, and I think he’ll quickly be a fan favorite here with his work ethic and physicality.
how often we decry in others what we ourselves are guilty of.
I once read that we’re all a lot closer to Hitler than Jesus Christ of Nazareth. The guy who threw this probably thought he was being funny – I wish I could take back a lot of what I’ve done and said.
What has struck me is the support for Simmonds across the NHL. I loved what one of his teamates said,“I’d like to go up there and kick his ass.”
The guy who did this thought he was being funny, it sort of blew up in his face. Most likely, he feels a little foolish at the moment. And is hoping he won’t be found out!
Only a rascist could think this action was funny for a second. Even if he could take back the stupid decision, he’d still have a rascitst mind capable to temporarily consider this a funny thing. I’d much prefer for him to feel the pain of physical assault and the regret of being permanently crippled, than to feel foolish about a “bad joke”. Had the Flyers jumped the boards and gotten after this guy (a la Vancouver in the 70’s when someone pulled Saleski’s hair) it would have been the greatest thing ever.
I’ve got zero tolerance for bigots. It is cool that so many players from around the league are supporting Simmonds in this.
I almost forgot...
Anyone that brings up the point, “Maybe the banana wasn’t a racial joke, just a slip on the banana joke” are making excuses and are probably rascists as well. That’s the most ridiculous shit I’ve heard in the responses to this garbage. Oh, that and “we’re all rascist for assuming the banana was rascism”.
Go ahead with that shit, you fucking bigots. Don’t try to suggest that the motive of this bullshit was innocent coincidence. That’s fabricating loopholes for rascist actions.

You would know about forty years ago because you grew up in that generation and lived in a time when rascism was much more prevalent and generally accepted or at least overlooked. Progress has been made, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t get upset about rascism today in my generation.

Wish I could find that Jagnut
Wayne,
Good luck playing everyone but the Hawks. And trust that if any tool pulls something like that in a section I’m near, they will regret it.
Wayne
Way to handle the BS ignorance last night. Flyer fans will absolutely be behind you. You’re exactly the kind of player that gets revered in Philly: Works tail off on ice/field; handles self with dignity off ice/field; succeeds on ice/field by combining work ethic and talent.
You’re destined for legend status ’round here if you keep this up.
Peace and much respect,
40-year fan
Wayne,
As a Blackhawks fan, I’m glad you’re in the EC now! As a closet (ohwhatagiveaway!) Flyers fan, I’m glad Philly is where you landed!
If your strength of character wasn’t obvious to everyone before, it is now. ANY team would be lucky to have you.
Dear Wayne,
You have an amazing way of staying grounded and classy in a way that some people can only dream of. You’re an example of how we can overcome and shun these sort of disgusting displays of ignorance and intolerance.
This sickening situation has done exactly the opposite of what that horrible person was trying to accomplish. Their hate has made us stronger. It hasn’t just brought us as Flyers Nation together as one to rally behind you, it has brought hockey as a whole together to show this isn’t what we tolerate, this isn’t what we stand for as a collective whole. For every idiot out there who will disrespect you, there are ten of us who have your back.
It’s an honor to have you on our team. You are loved, you are respected and you are a true warrior.
I know I look forward to watching you shine this season. Thank God you’re a Flyer. Keep being fantastic at what you do.
XOXO

From a Hawks fan
Good to see so many people coming together to support a single player in the league like this. Wouldn’t happen in any other sport I don’t think. Hockey fans truly are one of a kind. Keep your head up, Wayne, not that I need to tell you that. There are a lot more good people ion the world then bad.
The best revenge is success
Idiots ,whether bigots or not are in the end still idiots. Wayne your in good hands in Philadelphia. We will ride and die with you just give us your all and we will return the favor. I’ve been in your situation before and I suspect that like me you will just keep doing your thing and let the idiots keep on hating their own lives.
"All hail the Flyers" Jim Jackson.
From another Red Wings fan
Last night’s display of crass prejudice has no place in life — let alone hockey, which is — as we’ve learned time and time again — filled with caring, giving, and generous players and fans.
While no one has come forward to accept responsibility for the repulsive act, it’s certainly likely that it was some jackass that was rooting for my Detroit Red Wings. If there’s anything I’d like Mr. Simmonds to take away from this, it’s that the actions of one braindead reject don’t reflect the values and beliefs of the masses. When given a chance, fans of the Red Wings are among the best in the business — and we’d be lucky to have a player of Wayne Simmonds’ caliber added to the ranks.
That things like this need to be written in 2011 is picture proof that we haven’t come as far as we’d like to pretend we have, and despite never even dreaming of such a display, I’d like to apologize on behalf of hockey.

Wayne, you are a beautiful human being. People like you are a true inspiration. I love you.
I'm in love with the Lightning, the Flyers are my fling and I have a crush on the Flyers fans. LA Kings by default.
Dare to follow my childish, biased, petty and cheesy alter ego. Go visit my website. I will keep you updated on every Simon injury.
American Cheese, B!tch! ... #1 mission? Well... Some might remember.
RIP Karel, Jan & Josef.
Wayne, I must say that Philadelphia is honored to have a player like you on the team. You are fast, strong, and obviously coolheaded under pressure. It’s horrible that one of your first experiences on the ice with us had to end like that. We, as fans, are always going to be there to support you and by the sounds of it, the other players have your back, too. I look forward to an exciting season with you on the Flyers!

Not a Flyers fan, but I always had a lot of respect for Wayne Simmonds for the way he played the game. Now I have more respect for him as an individual. The way he handled the situation was all class. I’ll be cheering for him…except when he plays my team.

Wayne, you are a better man than I
because I would be trying to find out who the jackass is that threw the banana and kick his racist ass 6 ways to Sunday.
Your ability to treat this disgusting act in such a classy way is the stuff that role models are made of.
You are definitely my favorite new flyer, and well on your way to being my favorite flyer.
Kick some ass on the ice this year cuz!
Ignorance will never go away completely. There will also be one or two idiots spoiling the entire bunch. With that said, Wayne, ignore them. They are the extreme minority, and for every 1 ignorant imbecile out there, you have a million people supporting you.
Stay proud and keep doing your thing. These people have no place in society, nor does their opinion or action matter. I had the great honor and pleasure of meeting John Carlos, and what he believes in continues to ring true today—this is about unifying the human race, and not letting ignorance and stupidity have a voice. Rise above it.
Good luck this season, and prove all the haters wrong by staying strong and blowing it up all year long. As a Flyers fan, I certainly appreciate what you can bring to the team.
Good luck and God bless.
Wayne, I know most pro-athletes try to avoid all the media hooplah of their own sport, but I hope someone points this corner of blogdom out to you.
There’s more than just a city that supports you and having you play so well in its sport. We Flyer’s fans are just the ones lucky enough to get to cheer with you every step of the way.
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
Wayne, you are already an inspiration to many, tenfold, and will continue to be a profound asset to hockey and more importantly, as a role model. You are the MAN!
In regards of banana man, that douche prolly drove his drunk ass into a ditch and we can only hope he didn’t make it out okay. Perhaps next time, the fans of Detroit shouldn’t let someone go “un-witnessed” for something like this. Racially driven or not, it is a barbaric, foolish act on all levels.
Don’t let the bastards get you down, Wayne. Keep your head held high, for you’re a fine player.

Make a stand
The fans that sat next to this person and said nothing or saw nothing after TWO bananas were thrown are deeply implicated in this act of racism.
We fans have an obligation to confront racism when it emanates from the season ticket bozo in the seat in front of us. When you don’t say something, you are sending an implicit message to the racist that you agree with his/her agenda.
Dare to seem rude and contentious. Make yourself heard.
Don't let the bastards grind you down
I’d like to see this person throw anything in your direction without the cowardly cloak of anonymity. Just keep stickin’ it too them Wayne – I thought your reaction showed class and poise, and the bigot who did this, and those who think alike, are pretty much universally condemned by people everywhere. But you can’t win them all, or change every mind – There will always be people with sub-gumpian IQ’s who need to lash out. To hell with em.
I'd rather turn lemons into lemonade
There will always be ignorant people in the world. I admire your handling of the matter.
Welcome to the Flyers. I know I speak for the vast majority of fans when I say that we are well aware of your past accomplishments, and thrilled to have you wearing the Orange + Black.
Wayne!
The last company I worked for was hesitant to hire me in a full-time capacity. Why? It wasn’t because I was under-qualified or anything like that. I was trying to work in subsidized housing for single mothers and their children. The staff were all black women, as were most of the residents. The staff were concerned because most residents’ only interactions with white males (like myself) were when they dealt with police, lawyers, judges, etc. In other words, their experiences with – and treatment from – white males were pretty lousy.
I got the job anyway, and over time the residents came to feel comfortable with me. When I left two weeks ago, the residents all told me how amazing it was that I treated everyone equally and cared about all of them. It made me feel good to know I made a difference in their lives, but it also made me angry to think about all of the crap they had to endure before I showed up.
I didn’t hear about this until I got home from classes today and it infuriated me. But worse yet, I’m not at all surprised to read about something like this happening. There is an awful lot of hate and foolishness in the world, and it endures in various forms. It is passed on from one generation to the next because it is taught. Sadly, so long as there are people on this earth, there will be various forms of hatred. And a small piece of it came flying right at you last night.
Folks, this is beyond stupidity, ignorance, or “we should know better by now.” It is hate. There are a ton of hateful people in this world. It’s depressing.
Wayne, you did the right thing by turning the other cheek and you are to be highly commended for it. If more people follow your example in hateful situations, then we can make some real progress. My deepest condolences to you for what happened, and my highest respect to you for the way you handled it.
Go Flyers.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Great post, Chemistry.
Wayne, I am looking forward to see what you bring the Flyers. Your response, or lack thereof, to tonight only serves as evidence that you are a classy guy and definitely someone I can get behind.
Not to mention tearing it up in the preseason so far.

Mr Simmons handled this incident with admirable restraint and class, and I am glad he represents my favorite sport. Even if he is a Flyer.
Kings Fans STILL Support Wayne Simmonds!
Hey Wayne,
I am beyond sorry for what you had to put up with in London this week. As a Kings fan, I loved watching you and meeting you in person during your tenure with the Kings. You always conducted yourself with class and dignity, and I am so proud of you for handling yourself in exactly that manner this time as well. Kings fans everywhere were so disappointed to lose you this summer, but I know I speak for many of them when I say we wish you continued success in your career, whether you are a King or not. And if your career does bring you back to Los Angeles one day, we’ll be proud to have you back in our locker room. And team you play on would be privileged to have such a terrific team mate in their midst.
Stay the awesome person you are. I’m proud of you.
This Blackhawks' Fan Shocked
Mr. Simmonds,
I am truly shocked and saddened by the type of ignorant behavior shown at the recent hockey game in London, Ontario. As shown by the many posts showing support on your behalf, I would like to add mine. White, Black, Silver, whatever; we are all human beings (some of us act less human, such as the unknown thing the other day). Hope you have a much happier upcoming season.

Wayne- There’s not a whole lot that I can say that hasn’t already been said, but I would like to assure you that nothing of this will ever happen in Philly, we are the best, the most loyal, and the most passionate fans you will ever play for. I am proud to have you on our team and I believe that you will be a star for years to come.
Best of luck!

Offensive and disgusting
I may not like the Flyers at all, but such disrespect is appalling. If they find out who that was, he should have his ticket-purchasing rights revoked.
Hockey is a great sport
But no matter how great a sport it is, it has always took the backseat to th NFL, NBA and MLB, highlights are rarely shown on ESPN and the only news we get to see is negative, such as the Matt Cooke concussion incidents, Chara’s hit on Pacioretty and now Simmonds getting a banana thrown at him.
Obviously, Simmonds is one of the few black players in a sport with mostly white fans, we get that. Alot of the black players have had to deal with racism and if I recall Chris Simon had a incident with Mike Grier in the late 90s. Now let’s get past all this racist bull and worry about what really matters.

Simmonds
I’m a Hawks fan and I deplore any actions with such disrespect behind them, no matter what team the player is on. Taking it so far as to interfere in a game situation where such an action could cause injury is especially reprehensible. If you can’t deal with the fact that there are some talented non-white players in the game, maybe you need to stop following the sport altogether.

Wayne Simmonds
When the Flyers traded Mike Richards, I was shocked and disappointed. However, when I heard Wayne Simmonds was one of the players coming back, I was extremely excited. I have wanted Wayne to come to Philly for a while and his work ethic and skill are a perfect match for the Flyers. So, when this event occurred regarding racism, I was extremely upset. It seems like people who believe they are fans haven’t heard the regularly used phrase: hockey is for everyone. The Flyers fans are all behind Wayne Simmonds and will support Wayne through thick and thin. That’s what real fans do.
